Pac-10 reinstates Oregon’s Blount
Oregon running back LeGarrette Blount, who was suspended for the season after punching a Boise State player in the wake of the season opener, has been allowed to rejoin the Ducks.
The university requested Blount’s reinstatement, which was approved by Pacific-10 Conference Commissioner Larry Scott on Monday.
Blount will be able to play for the No. 14 Ducks on Saturday night when they host Arizona State. He missed eight games.
Blount issued a statement saying he was grateful to Oregon coach Chip Kelly for giving him a second chance.
“Now it is up to me to prove to people that their lasting impressions of me are not what they saw in Boise,” he said.
Blount punched Byron Hout following the nationally televised opener, bringing the Broncos’ defensive end to his knees. The next day he was suspended for the season by Kelly, but he was allowed to keep his scholarship and practice with the team.
“We have tremendous respect for Oregon. Those coaches, we know most of those guys very well. And so, whatever they decide we’re 100 percent behind. I think that’s good for all involved if that’s what they chose to do,” Boise State coach Chris Petersen said.
Kelly later said that if Blount met certain academic and behavioral conditions, he would be allowed to return. The earliest possible date for his reinstatement was last Saturday’s game against Stanford, but the Ducks waited until this week to bring him back. Kelly insisted there was no delay in Blount’s return.
Kelly would not discuss the special requirements for reinstatement, calling it a private issue.
Kelly recommended Blount’s return to athletic director Mike Bellotti on Sunday night. It was approved by university President Richard Lariviere before being turned over to the conference for approval.
“After a thorough review of the situation, I am convinced LeGarrette Blount paid a significant and appropriate price for the mistakes he made on the field, and that he has learned important life-long lessons,” Scott said.
Blount and Kelly addressed the team on Monday morning.
“He just apologized to them again for the incident,” and told them he was anxious to rejoin the team,” Kelly said. Blount practiced with the team afterward.
Blount said in his statement released by the university that he would not speak to reporters.
“Until that time, I feel my actions can speak louder than anything I could say. I just want to help my teammates who have been supportive of me,” his statement said.
Blount rushed for 1,002 yards last season. Redshirt freshman LaMichael James emerged as Oregon’s starter in his absence.
James has run for 1,043 yards so far this season, becoming the first Oregon freshman to go over 1,000 yards rushing. He has rushed for eight touchdowns.
Oregon (7-2, 5-1 Pac-10) is coming off a 51-42 loss at Stanford this past Saturday. After Arizona State, the Ducks play at Arizona and return home to face Oregon State in the annual Civil War rivalry game.
Kelly said James will remain his starter against the Sun Devils. Blount’s participation will depend on how he does in practice this week and whether there are any injuries, the coach added.
Kelly also said he was unconcerned about reaction to Blount’s reinstatement.
“If I based this program on what public opinion is, I’d have a lot of problems,” he said.

Funny thing is there is plenty of people who are condemning this young man who may watch every episode of UFC programming . Now that's a blood sport . But I hear no one calling them thugs . I have done MMA and there are guys who enjoy breaking someone arm or busting a head . Evening bragging about it in the post fight interview . Beat you don't call them felons . Double standard

The thing is that there should be good sportsmanship on all sides . People often think they can say what they want without any consideration of the hurt words do inflict . The saying action speaks louder than word is only half true . All actions start by words said . The build up to the game for example by ESPN and other media adding fuel to the fire doesn't help .
In the grand design of things these young men are still young .Turning 18 or 21 doesn't make you a responsible grown up . Adult yes , grown up not yet .These student athletes are not providing for a family at this point not managing a career , not earning a living as you and I do daily . Their biggest responsibility is playing football and attending classes to earn a degree .
The players involved should both be invited to reconcile and move on . A handshake and apology goes a long way to healing and making things right .
That being said . Lets talk football . I have to say that year to date the biggest game for Boise State was the Oregon game . For Oregon it wasn't Boise State It was beating USC which they did and to become Pac-10 champs . I for one am a Trojan fan . I would have been delighted to see USC run through the Pac-10 ,but they got beat twice . There's a dim glimmer of hope , like Boise State has . What is really sad for Boise State fans is that they can go undefeated like last season and get a non BCS Bowl and get beat by a non BCS conference opponent , While Oregon will get a BCS bowl should they win out and become Pac-10 champs . Is it fair ? that depends really on how you consider the cost associated with those bowl sites period . Pasedena , Arizona , Miami , New Orleans want those institutions that travel well and bring lots of fans , boosters and alumni who spend big money . Have you seen some of the lower bowl games as the cameras pan through the stands , lots of empty seats . Not good for a big New Years Day event .
I for one suggest that Boise State build a bigger stadium , something that is over far beyond the 30,000 seat capacity blue field they now have . Fill those seats and watch as others will come and play . When UCLA plays Tennessee , both schools know that either place will be filled to capacity and where talking +90,000 for the Rose Bowl and +100,000 for Neyland Stadium . That's big dollars and revenue for those schools . Consider if you will that there are college football programs that have bigger operating budgets than most NFL teams .
When you look at the bottom line being dollar and cents , Boise States needs to start spending some to get the respect they feel they demand . You are still new to the upper college football division . Some of these schools have been playing since the late 1800s . Rutgers University vs Princeton University in 1869 being the first game played .
As for Boise bowl record over he past 10 years 5-4 , with 4 loses in the past 5 bowl appearances , losing the last 2 since upseting Oklahoma in the 2007 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl . So why are Boise fans feeling entitled to a BCS bowl ? You have done well so far to in building a good football program . But your still a few years away from being part of the elite division of college football and entering a Major BCS Conference . Get to a bigger conference win out and you'll play a National Title game .
Remember the other conferences have big venues that the BCS looks at favorably . At least you don't have to play in the Motor City Bowl in December .
Until that time comes you'll have to hope that the BCS voters will have favor on your side when doing the selecting . But you won't be national Champs until you enter an elite conference who has been TV revenue dollars and sponsorship

Why should he when can have you shine shoes .. Keep your bigotry to yourself for your fear of race is showing . There's no room for race based hate here or anywhere on this planet . You didn't chose your parents , but you can chose to be an idiot or not .
Hate speech will get you or someone you care for hurt in the long run . You also don't know if your life(or someone your care for ) will be saved someday by a "@#$%" as you put it .
I can say this for sure , God has a way of exceeding our expectations good or bad . I hope you get on the good side with God . Cause I have seen the bad and its real ugly . You want no part of that .

In my opinion a sucker punch is a b@tc# move . But when your talking trash to a guy you don't know and put your hands on him its no longer a sucker punch its straight getting clocked and eating your words .Moral of the story keep your mouth shut and maybe you keep your teeth . Some people don't like trash talk , some people have deep crap going on in their life that anything can set them off with little warning . Two wrongs don't make a right . But there are and have been worst things done in sports . If Blount made a beeline to Byron and just cracked him I would be in total agreement that he needs help and anger management . But he didn't Byron took it on his own to accord to talk trash to Blount . If you rattle the cage best be sure the animal is safely locked away .Otherwise the tiger will do what a tiger will do . You look for trouble you'll find it in life . If you remember Jim Rome trash talking Jim Everett on ESPN years ago . Rome kept calling him Chris , as in Chris Everett the former female tennis star . Jim Everett asked him not to call him by that name , Rome ignored him and kept call him Chris . Jim Everett over turned the table on Jim Rome and if it wasn't for the studio staff Rome would have been beaten badly . Why ? His trash talking went to far . He didn't have the discernment to know when he pushed it too far . He was not sensitive to another persons feelings . Byron did the same thing when he trashed talked Blount . Either way it didn't make it right but it was understood .
And as a man you should know you don't talk crap to other men and just think they'll all sit there and take it . . In some places words alone can be a call to fight a duel . We're not talking about kids anymore . People should realize that they can also prevent things before they happen . It called respect for the other person . If Byron had simple said good game we wouldn't be debating this issue at all .
Jimmy J , I too know there is dirty play out there . As mention before , some dirty play is taught by coaches . I have a 10 year old who plays flag football . His coach teaches them to give back the opponents flags once their opponent is caught , while the opposing team just throws their flag to the ground and walk away . The kids know it's cheating and ask why can they get away with it . Hard to explain to 8, 9,and 10 year olds , only then to hear the opposing coach pass blame to the children .Kids who learn to cheat become players who cheat and coaches who cheat and owners who cheat . It's that simple . But some trick play or dirty play or just plan old hard play is done at every level of sport if you played baseball as a kid and happen to have played either 2nd base or Short stop you were taught to throw through the base runner and complete the play .The base runner is taught to run through the infield player . I was a catcher when I played baseball . You block the plate or get knocked off the plate . Not considered dirty but hard play . Been that way since the game began over 100 years ago . Just think baseball is considered a non contact sport .
Football players don't get strong just to carry groceries , they get stronger so that they can push past other players . Ironically Hockey Player beat the snot outta each other sometime they even get hit with the sticks . But they all shower up after the game and go celebrate together with their opponents . Guess respect goes further then trash talk .
Peace

If Blount fails to adhere the guidelines that coach Kelly has set down for Oregon's remaining 3 games, then by all means, he should be further penalized. Personally, I think that the kid has learned his lesson and should be given another chance, but of course that is just me. When my wife and I raised our 3 kids, and they occasionally stepped out of line, we disciplined them accordingly, but this doesn't mean that it should be a life long sentence. This may be Blount's only chance for an NFL career, why not give him the benefit of the doubt and let him give it another try. If he screws up again then the burden will be on his shoulders..

All contracts signed by the player and the University are between the student and the University . The University has the right to punish as they see fit and they did . Blount complied with said punishment and should be given an opportunity to move on having learned from his mistake . We're not speaking of PACMAN Jones who is a repeat offender who could care less about any governing body or law enforcement . If Blount fails to manage his anger that will be his own undoing . But yes players are taught to be tough , Football is a violent sport by nature . It is a full contact sport where people get injured and can die as a result . I lost a friend some 30 years ago who broke his neck at the tender age of 13 during an open field tackle . But fights in football do happen even in the Pros by some very seasoned veterans like John Lynch he ended up breaking a teammates jaw one year , but he still got to play and make the pro bowl .They are fined and suspended by their teams and the league but allowed to return with notice , do it again and your privilege to play is over .
I wish they all could be good sports , but I can tell you as a father of 3 and watching them play ball , some coaches need to be put in check for teaching young players bad tactics that will end up hurting those same players years later .

Blunt shoulda been suspended for about 4 games. An eight-game suspension is enough. Dez Bryant got hammered. But.
But what Bryant did was akin to lying in court. Which is called perjury. And that's why his suspension is so harsh. The most important perjurer of our time is Mark Fuhrman. Zing!

Blount has been granted a second chance, it is over with, and we should all move on. Good luck to him, and to his geammates. Hopefully he will learn form this, and if he entersw the draft, I am sure that his stock in not anywhere close to where it was at this point of the season last year.

There was no intent , there was no man endangering state of mind , it was reaction to a dumb player making dumb comments two wrongs don't make it right .
What really concerns me Amber is the witch hunt and the unforgiving nature of some of the people posting here . Acting as if they never made a regrettable mistake in life . Well with that attitude expressed , be concern with karma .What goes around comes back around . Yes there are some bad eggs out there and their actions stick out like a sore thumb . Those players will lose all their chances and squander their opportunities . Calling Blount a thug , ghetto thug and calling for protest and the like are way off base here . Also the Boise State player should have been suspended for at least 1 game in my opinion for starting the whole mess in the first place .
Yes he only mouthed off but many people have lost their careers or lives due to their mouth alone . The tongue is a very powerful thing Amber . It has the power of speaking praises and curses from the same small hole . We have to be mindful of what we say and who we say things too . I am sure you have run across someone just having a bad day and spoke to them and they had plenty to say that may have not been so nice . It doesn' make that person a thug or gangster .
Lastly if it were you who made the regrettable mistake , would you want people calling for your head . The player took the punishment given , made the apologized to all parties involved and is trying to atone for his mistake .
Everyone deserves a second chance and as I recall Jesus said to forgive 7 x 70 . Forgive so that you too may be forgiven . What you bind here you bind in heaven . Remember you too were once forgiven . So don't condemn others unless you want the same condemnation in return .
