Oklahoma St. WR Bryant played during investigation

  • Print

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP)—All-America receiver Dez Bryant played in Oklahoma State’s first three games of the season while compliance officials were investigating an apparent meeting with former NFL players Deion Sanders and Omar Stoutmire that he later lied about to the NCAA.

Documents released by the university Thursday in response to an open records request from The Associated Press show OSU suggested to the NCAA that it should interview Sanders and Stoutmire because they were “purported to work out” with Bryant.

The documents also show questions were raised about Bryant’s account of events—before the start of the season. That calls into question whether his participation in the first three games could cause Oklahoma State to forfeit, if the NCAA rules he should have been ineligible from the start.

In an Aug. 26 e-mail, associate athletic director for compliance Scott Williams mentions that Oklahoma State’s season opener was approaching—at that point 10 days away—and the school would need to make “a determination on Dez’s playing status.”

Five days later, still before a season-opening win against Georgia, Marcus M. Wilson, the NCAA’s assistant director of agent, gambling and amateurism activities, asks Williams about Bryant: “Why does his story keep changing?”

Oklahoma State ruled Bryant ineligible Wednesday because he “failed to openly disclose to the NCAA the full details of his interaction with a former NFL player not affiliated with OSU.”

The school has said it already has begun the process of asking the NCAA to reinstate Bryant, and released documents show Bryant is tentatively scheduled for a follow-up interview with the NCAA on Tuesday in Indianapolis.

In that Aug. 26 e-mail, Williams informed Wilson that the NCAA should contact former NFL players Sanders and Stoutmire, along with former Texas Tech receiver Michael Crabtree and Bryant’s girlfriend, if it was taking over the investigation. The e-mail mentions a facility where “Dez, Deion and Omar were purported to work out.”

Sanders served as an adviser for Crabtree, who has the same agent that represented Sanders, setting up the former Texas Tech receiver’s announcement in January that he would turn pro and commenting on his behalf during a prolonged holdout.

Sanders told The New York Times that he met with Bryant over the summer at a Texas athletics center and had him over to his house for dinner, but did not work out at the facility named Fieldhouse USA. Sanders said Bryant “panicked” and lied to the NCAA because he “thought it was a violation to come over to my house and it isn’t.”

Sanders declined an interview request from The Associated Press through NFL Network spokesman Dennis Johnson. Gary Oliver of Fieldhouse USA, whose name is listed in OSU’s documents, did not respond to telephone and e-mail messages left by the AP on Thursday.

In determining what information the university could include in a news release announcing Bryant was ineligible, Williams sought advice from the NCAA.

“Would it be possible to release information regarding an alleged association between the former NFL player and an active agent? Would it be permissible to release information regarding the alleged workouts?” Williams asked in an e-mail this week. “What parts of the investigation are we restricted from discussing?”

The NCAA’s Wilson responded that specific details of the investigation should not be released.

The documents also show the university and the NCAA also had an inquiry into a cell phone that Bryant was using that did not belong to him, but determined he had not received an extra benefit.

If the NCAA finds Sanders provided Bryant with any extra benefits during their visit or was serving as an intermediary for an agent, Bryant’s college career is finished.

A top NFL prospect, Bryant caught 87 passes for 1,480 yards and 19 touchdowns and also had two punt returns for touchdowns last season. This season, Bryant leads the team with 17 catches for 323 yards and four touchdowns.

The university released a statement from Bryant on Wednesday saying “I made a mistake by not being entirely truthful when meeting with the NCAA.”

Willie Baker, Bryant’s attorney, said in an e-mail that “NCAA rules restrict our ability to talk about this due to the ongoing investigation. Accordingly neither Dez or I will have any further comments at this time.”

The 15th-ranked Cowboys (3-1) play at Texas A&M (3-1) on Saturday in the Big 12 Conference opener for both teams.

    NCAA. Such a hypocrite organization.
College players are not even allowed to talk to people about their potential future earnings; while schools are allowed to make million bucks signing contracts with shoe companies and prohibiting a player to even wear his own dad's shoes. Spirit of amateur sports? What a joke.

If you feel this is unfair, please contact the NCAA and let them know: (317) 917-6222 or pmr@ncaa.org.

"T Boone gives them all cash" - that is ignorance defined.
Just because OKState's not a "traditional power" somehow they can't build great facilities and get there the right way. How did those other programs get there?(and BTW USC,ND,OU etc have had some pretty crappy years themselves) Should we assume everyone pays players now? (except USC where proven)
Get used to OKState being ranked / top recruiting / etc. and it's being done the right way. Pickens is n no way involved with Dez' issue with Deion.
    Ignorance

Until the NCAA deals with the Reggie Bush atrocities they have zero credibility. USC should forfeit the entire 2004 and 2005 seasons, PERIOD!

Sanders seems to be the problem. The NCAA is being way to stiff on OSU. Bryat didn't know the NCAA rules regarding the situation and didn't tell the truth as he was unaware if he had or hadn't done anything wrong.

Nine toes sanders thinks his name gets him anything he wants. while bryant is playing for osu, why doesn't idiot sanders have the respect for the player to ask the coach, the compliance dept., or osu for permission to talk to the player? sanders is the problem, and the ncaa is just as stupid as sanders. doesn't the ncaa think we remember the preferences r. bush received, the lies he and his family told, & the ncaa's failure to act on any of it?????????

    188. Posted by CarlosC - With the present state of economics in today's World of athletics, you could be closer to the truth then anyone else! However, my question is - had Dieon Sanders been a graduate of OK State, would it have been okay for Bryant to associate with him even IF Sanders was indirectly representing a sports agent's interest? Also-is this non-association with another school's graduates an OK State rule or a NCAA rule? I can see a violation occuring if indeed Sanders was working for a sports marketing firm such as "New Era Sports" - the company that Reggie Bush and family received thousands of dollars from while Bush was at USC!

NCAA is a bunch of idiots. They focus on trivial things but things they need to come down in they turn a blind eye. The NCAA is just as the same gestipal Germany used during the war. How about the NCAA come down hard on Official who constantly make bad calls. What about holding officials accountable. It was a missed call then cost Georgia the game against LSU, It was a missed call that cost the USC Trojans the Championship then officials did not call Texas QB Vince down when his knee touched the ground. We constantly see bad calls or missed calls, When is the NCAA going to focus on the important thing. How about the NCAA making money of college football players? Where college football players are not allowed to make money while playing Football but the NCAA can make money by allowing video games to use the names & likeness of football players without their consent. Where is the justice in that. The NCAA like the BCS needs to be done away with & remade to actually be useful & just. Maybe that way they stop wasting peoples times & with stupid trivial things.

We are not getting the whole story. Every weekend we see current and ex pro's on the sidelines at college games. In Basket Ball every summer pro's and college play pick up games. In the Olympics they play on the same team. There must be more to this story. I would like to know all the facts before I pass judgement. I do know as a fact that coaches make millions and the schools make billions. Sure these kids get an education and a few go pro but there is no compensation for the injury's for those that don't. I will give you an example Tebow's concussion, who knows how that will effect him in the future. How much money or education will future memory loss be worth. Ask TrayAikman about his Migrain headache's. I would like to thank every student athlete for allowing me the privilege of watching them perform for there schools and the love of there sport. The NCAA rule's are unconstitutional when it comes down to who you can and can't talk to. Agents are crooks and will resort to anything to make a buck. You need to be a Lawyer to understand all the rules. Crap you need a Masters Degree to understand them all and then you still would not knoe them all. How can we exspect a kid just out of High School to understand then all. Somehow the kids need to be protected and it should start with the NCAA. The NCAA should be mentoring not condemning them. I would like to see congress look into the NCAA and see how many rules they break or turn the other cheek. I believe it was SMU that got the deat penelty a few years back, can you imaine USC getting it? I'am a 53 year old white male and it seem to me the NCAA is also Racist. Matt Barkley QB at SC was recruited in the 7th grade by Mater Dei a Catholic High School there coach played for USC, Matt Leinart another Mater Dei kid I don't think it takes much to figure that one out. A big donation to a non profit private school and a few words from your mentor head coach. Enough said for know.

Should OSU have to forfeit thier wins -- the games that Bryant played as an ineligible player?

Deion Sanders is an irksome gadfly who chronically tries to interact with collegiate football players. He telephoned MIchael Crabtree last year and advised him to declare for NFL draft. He needs to accept the fact that he is yesterday's man and quit trying to feel important by interacting with collegiate players.

Wouldn't college football be more dramatic if the students had to pass 12 or more hours their freshman year and then be eligible to play. The next thing you know, the NFL would have a minor league for those who were not college oriented and colleges would stop spending education money on coaches and the NCAA would stop needing to be a policing company. Most sordid lives would find their rightful places elsewhere.
