WR Dez Bryant tells ESPN he will enter NFL draft

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP)—Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant is headed to the NFL.

Bryant told ESPN.com that he plans to enter the 2010 NFL draft, disclosing his intentions late Thursday after the NCAA rejected a final appeal by the school to reinstate the junior All-American who lied about contact with former NFL player Deion Sanders.

Bryant sat out the first five games while the NCAA investigated his offseason meeting with Sanders at a Texas athletic center. Bryant admitted that he lied to an NCAA investigator about the meeting and later apologized.

Bryant told ESPN.com that entering the draft is “the best decision for me” and that he will start training for the NFL combine next week in Florida.

“This year didn’t go the way I wanted it to,” Bryant said. “It was so hard. And to be honest, I had my head down at times. But the NCAA has made their decision. And I respect that. And now I’ve made mine.”

Bryant caught 87 passes for 1,480 yards and 19 touchdowns last season while also scoring twice on punt returns. He was the only one of three finalists for the Biletnikoff Award left in school this year.

In a letter to the NCAA that accompanied his request for reinstatement, Bryant had asked to be allowed to play again this season for the 18th-ranked Cowboys (6-2, 3-1 Big 12). The NCAA decided last week that Bryant should be suspended until next September, OSU appealed and the final word came Thursday from the NCAA’s Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee.

Bryant told ESPN.com he hopes to live up to the NFL production of receivers including Randy Moss and Anquan Boldin.

“When I talk to the NFL, I’m going to be truthful with them about what happened,” he said. “It will be what I’m supposed to tell them, which is the truth.”

Mr. Common Sense- whatsa matter, your momma didn't give you enough love when you were a kid? Seriously, collect yout scattered brain cells together, get a clue (you can find the definition in Google or Wikipedia) and come back to the debate. Until then, keep working on your remedial Sesame Street lessons.

As for the NCAA, I'd like to know exactly what it was Bryant did to get suspended. Did any of you idiots actually PLAY organized sport, or did you all take Corporate Tool 101 in college? Is it possible you were all sitting around, sloshed out of your gourds, and pulled this idea out of your suggestion box/rear ends?

The NCAA has their heads so far up their proverbial - AZZ's" that it's absurd. The ultimate power they wield is offensive and very detrimental tot eh game.

Suspend a player for a year - for having lunch with a former NFL player - yet reinstate a player that takes an " amazingly cheap" violtent shot at another player with obvious malicious intent - and then has to be restained from attaking the fans in the stadium - ala (Oregon player)

You can bet your bottom dollar had Bryant played for USC, Texas, Penn State, Notre Dame - the smae outcome would not have played out.

NCAA - you have totally disconnected with the game . You are pathetic!

Many of you think a lot of football players and other college athletes are thugs. Some of that is true. But I also feel the powers that be in the NCAA are thugs also. Many of their rules that are violations are nuts. I was on an athletic team in college and thought I was a good kid. Never had any problems. By today's standards,I may have been suspended or thrown off the team by the present rules. Totally crazy. Plus, the NCAA doesn't even hand out discipline evenly.

Mike (#302), when you call sharpton and jackson, ask them why their charges always seem to choose to violate the rules - why they seem to think the rules dont apply to them!

OSU knew Dez violated the rules, they turned him in to the NCAA. Dez knew the rules and chose to ignore them. OSU told Dez to leave Sanders alone because of the trouble it would get him in. Dez decided to do what he wanted to do, so the NCAA made him pay the price. As I stated, OSU turned him in.

And I just wnated to make one final note clear. Dez Bryant didn't even break any rules, the only rule he broke was lying when set up and backed into a corner by the blood thirsty rabid wolves otherwise known as the NCAA! And one final not to Mr Common Sense who I'm betting is an OU fan. When OU gets caught cheating say, putting players on payrolls of car dealerships that they don't really work for or, trying to recruit 25 yr. old former semi-pro players or, shoplifting on the way to a bowl game. What does the NCAA penalize those players? Nothing!! I have some more examples if you'd like them.

Mr Common Sense? There's an oxymoron if I ever saw one! You can look up the definition to that big word by typing it in your google toolbar my man. You see, what's going on is bigger than the Dez story. There are some tools available to help you process and analyze information as well. I would suggest starting with hooked on phonics and go from there.

Well the NCAA got what they wanted, one of the best players in college football has bowed out to the pressure. Too bad he didn't play for Florida huh? Wait, if he played for Florida there would have never been an inquiry to begin with! And then they try to cover it up by fining Florida's coach 30,000 because they know people will be pointing out the ruling on a player trying to rip someone's eye out of their freakin' head! Bryant has himself well throughout these proceedings, which is more than I can say for the NCAA who didn't even offer up an explanation. They believe themselves to be above that, a law unto themselves if you will. And this zero tolerance @#$% about questioning the crooked ass calls by officials, just another example of how they intend to rule by intimidation! It seems to me as if they are flaunting their corruptness this season and daring anyone to do anything about it! College fans of any sport need to put an end to all of this @#$% and stop going to games, they'll hear us when their fu***** coffers are empty!! I can't be the only one that sees how corrupt this system is, and Oklahoma State can't be the only school these schisters are screwing over! College fans need a boycott now!!

Well said. I concur. And any other phrase that agrees. This was payback for the Oliver lawsuit and no mater what spin the NCAA uses, completely too harsh for the crime. OKState's recruiting is picking up and I really think will become a three team Big12 South in the uyears to come, but DEZ was the difference in past games. When Zac got in trouble, it was toss it up to Dez and if he didn't come down with a great grab, at least battled and prevented a pick. They just don't have that guy now.

We need a playoff. Until then, it is just a mythical championship. Why is everyone so afraid of a playoff?

Let's settle this on the field instead of getting frustrated in chat rooms.

Most of the people on here that are hanging dez needs to keep in mind that they have told a lie before. In fact, I would be willing to put big money on that they have told many lies and more than likely going to tell more and more. So next time your wife/g-friend confronts you about all the gay porn on your computer just keep in mind you shouldn't hang "KIDS" that don't want to lose eligibility to play college football.

For 274 Chuck: You write weird! Hopefully you will get drafted to the NFL board.

For 279 sm: Dez was a true sophomore last year couldn't go to the NFL, and he payed his dues at OSU. If you would have ever really watched him you would have understood, because if OSU won 8 games. He was the deciding factor that gave OSU the win in at least 4 games.

For 281 shortseller1970: Dumbass! Yeah that is it too!

For 287 Bamalina L: These are kids. What you are judging is 18 to 20 year old kids. The unfair thing is that the NCAA don't seem to know there rules, because they apply differently to each person. I not trying to justify a lie. I'm just saying is one lie worth to the NCAA a college career? In every other program in college you are pushed to go out and talk to people in your field and try to find work and compete, but in football you should wait till a very few months to organize and get ready for your career.

On a final note. This is also really unfair to the fans that love OSU. For people that go stand for 2 to 3 hours before "the walk" just to see there favorite OSU football players, and drive long distances to get to watch the game. Whether your a fan of OSU or not you should really set down and think that if this was your kid and he told his first lie to you what you would do. Would you give him a little spanking and send him to his room for the day or would you put him up for adoption, because Dez got put up for adoption. I don't blame him for going to the NFL. AN UNJUST SENTANCING.

For a lot of these kids in school, it is just a chance to use there talent to get to the next level, i don't understand some of the stupid rules in the ncaa, but they are there for a reason and i guess these kids should know about them. i hope they are told about these rules, so as they cannot claim ignorance on it. but the nfl will be his next stop, i think he has proven he can be a good receiver in the nfl. you have to talk to the kid to know if he is of good character.

    286. Posted by Cool-Bug - You are right, there is no such thing as a FREE ride in College football. Yea, some of the players are on athletic scholarships but it does not cost the schools that they play for one red cent! Players like Dez Bryant fill up stadiums and bring in more than enough gate money to pay for their scholarships. Yes- Bryant didn't tell the truth about his association with Dieon Sanders but I feel the punishment is a little excessive - "death" penalty virtually ending is College career. The NCAA has no rhyme or reason to their actions. They end one player's College career for not being truthful yet sweep a major violation of accepting thousands of dallars by another College player and family under the carpet! They end a player's College career for throwing a punch but yet recenlty a player trys to gouge out an eye and he only gets a one game suspension! If the NCAA is going to set down rules then they should apply equally to all schools and the punishment should be consistant.

These fascists at the NCAA should be strung up and beaten for trying to eff up the best spectator sport in America. Who gives a rat's ass if DB met with Sanders at a Texas Athletic Club? Jesus, why ruin OSU's chance at a strong season. These NCAA bastards are like the commies that run China, thank God they'll eventually die. Let the young guy play and entertain us. Now he's heading to the boring ass NFL where everybody plays like they are millionaires and nobody gives a @#$% about anything but their Rolls. Horrible descision.

coolbug, all of these thugs know the rules and they still continue to break them. These idiots know that college is a stepping stone for a career that will earn them millions of dollars. Having said that, is it the fault of the NCAA for having rules? Or is it the fault of the player for breaking them?
