No. 10 Ohio St. in control of Big 10 race

  • Print

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP)—The big-game blues are gone at Ohio State. Now the Buckeyes get a chance to prove they’re not just one-week wonders in high-stakes affairs.

Iowa’s loss to Northwestern, coupled with Ohio State’s 24-7 win later Saturday at Penn State, left the Hawkeyes and Buckeyes tied for first in the Big Ten. They meet this weekend at the Horseshoe, with the winner claiming the conference’s automatic Bowl Championship Series berth and at least a share of the league title.

“We knew we had to win if we wanted the outright Big Ten championship,” Buckeyes linebacker Austin Spitler said. “It’s awesome. It’s all on the line next Saturday against Iowa.”

If it’s November, the boys wearing scarlet and gray must be in contention for the title. They’re gunning for a fifth straight conference championship, after all.

No. 10 Ohio State (8-2, 5-1) moved up five spots in the Top 25 poll released Sunday, returning, while Iowa (9-1, 5-1) dropped seven spots to No. 15.

The Nittany Lions (8-2, 4-2) tumbled eight spots to No. 19, and also fell into a tie for third in the Big Ten with Wisconsin (7-2, 4-2). The Badgers jumped three positions to No. 21 in the poll after rallying to beat Indiana 31-28 on Saturday.

Penn State missed a golden opportunity to prove its gaudy record wasn’t just the result of a less-than-impressive schedule that included wins over middling Big Ten teams like Illinois and Michigan, and subpar nonconference foes like Akron and Eastern Illinois.

Stifled by the Ohio State defense and maligned by its own special teams play, Penn State must now exchange its dreams of a BCS bowl for a spot in a less prestigious postseason contest like the Outback Bowl on Jan. 1.

“It’s tough to lose like that. It wasn’t what we expected, but we have two more games left and you have to put it behind you,” linebacker Sean Lee said.

Penn State lost its second straight game against a ranked opponent, dating back to the 38-24 loss to No. 5 Southern California in last season’s Rose Bowl.

The Buckeyes’ big-game woes were even more pronounced, having lost six straight against a team ranked as good or better than them in the polls—until beating the Nittany Lions.

Sophomore quarterback Terrelle Pryor, blamed for Ohio State’s offensive problems much of this season, was instead basking in the afterglow of a clutch performance. He threw for two touchdowns and ran for another against a Penn State defense that had been the Big Ten’s best.

Even more impressive for Pryor is that the western Pennsylvania native played relatively mistake-free football in his first game back in his home state, against the school he spurned last year when he was a highly touted high school recruit.

“You could tell he wasn’t going to let anything stop him. He was just focused and dialed in,” said receiver DeVier Posey, who combined with Pryor for a 62-yard TD pass. “This win was really big for him and we’re happy he got it back home.”

Ohio State’s 24 points were the most allowed all season by the Nittany Lions, as was the 228 yards rushing. The Buckeyes were just as dominant on defense, too, holding the dangerous spread HD attack to nine first downs—the fewest since notching just six against Iowa in 2004.

“You never know what’s going to happen in a ballgame like this,” Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel said. “We thought it would be a 60-minute battle.”

But the Buckeyes, of course, are used to playing meaningful games in November. They haven’t dropped a Big Ten road game in November since 2004, when they lost at Purdue.

The Boilermakers also had the distinction of handing Ohio State its only Big Ten loss this year, a shocking 26-18 upset at West Lafayette that left the Buckeyes labeled as frauds by some national pundits.

They’ve rebounded nicely since then, holding their last three foes to a combined 14 points to streak back into contention for a trip to the Rose Bowl.

“You still have that opportunity, but man, you’re a long way from that happening,” Tressel said. “We’re going to go to work for it. We still have the chance. … All you can ask for in life is a chance.”

Thanks Aaron, for backing up what I've said for years.I usually blow off most of the haters who post on here because truth be told, they're actually fans of William & Mary,or some other non-descript school or conference,or maybe NCAA subdivision(2 or 3)that no one pays any attention to,so they PRETEND to be PAC-10 or SEC or Big 12 South fans in order to feel better about themselves...sad,isn't it? GO BUCKS!!!!!!!!

Hey Aaron good stuff I have always said the BCS needs to alternate the bowls or ncaa needs to hold a play-off in January at Green Bay ,New England , Buffalo or Cleveland stadiums and then see how the effects of the weather plays on the sunshine teams .Repalce the Rose with Snow ,Sugar with Sleet , Fiesta with Freezing,Orange with Fridgid bowls and let the chips fall where they may.look at the nfl teams from cold weather they will take a lower rated player from cold weather school before taking a sunshine school player and the ones who dont regret it later

Aaron, that is one of the best comments i have ever read on these posts. I am an ohio state alumnus and i can tell you i had guys i roomed with at school who were from a warm weather state or country and i used to smoke them on the basketball court in the cold because they werent tough enough to block out the weather in order to perfom at their best. How many football games have we seen where the warm weather team does have to come to play a cold team in a nfl playoff game, the warm team, huddled by the heater, the cold team, standing on the sideline, many in short sleeves....lol. Great point!

Jim, it sounds as if you have an emotional problem. Where did all of this irrational, out-of-touch-with-reality hate and name calling come from? At best, your child-like behavior makes you seem really immature.I won't correct your silly confusion over the facts, because others have already done so, but I am concerned about your mental health. Lighten up, you might live longer!

RichardS .....let me ask you something, please, and honestly answer it? lol......When USC thumped OSU last year did u say, ohhh their rebuilding with a freshman quarterback??? nooo YOU LIKE ALL YOUR LIBERAL FRIENDS, waffled back n forth to protect yourself incase we won, and now doing the same this year, you beat OSU by three, and that was questionable since their is video evidence to prove otherwise, however the game is months over and OSU has moved on and so have you, oooh wait my question, how does it feel to get whacked by 47 to 20 by someone u were supposed ot handle???

jim........go bury your head in the sand lmao.....im looking at Florida's schedule other than LSU who have you played to date thus far, that is even worthy of saying was a competiton? and we didnt play patsies like troy, or charleston southern, fiu, et. however you only blow out the ones like troy, Kiffin almost beat you at home, Arkansas almost got you at home, and your not rebuilding, except for your excuses...lmao

Ker(mit)win1960, bring on either of those two teams, lets play some real football.....besides Clemson who have you beat? and not one ranked team? yet you run your mouth and schedule patsies??? lmao

Hey all you SEC bigmouths...here's a stat for you. In the past 7 seasons worth of bowl games, an SEC team has played a Big 10 team 19 times. Can you guess who has won the majority of those games (10 of 19)? Here's a hint...it's the "big", "slow", "over-rated", "under-talented" conference that you SEC fans love to hate...

A few things. First, for all of the talk about how terrible the Big 10 is, would any team from the SEC, Big 12, PAC 10 or ACC like to play at Penn State, OSU or Michigan in late November or early December? Do you think you could so easily beat a team in freezing temperatures and snow in front of over 100K hostile fans? Both the Bowl system of college and the NFL are inherently biased against cold-weather teams, such as Big 10 teams in that their Bowls or Championships are played in warm weather. The weather conditions that dominate late-season football in the Big 10 put a premium on power running and defending against it at the expense of explosive speedy offense. These teams play in cold, then come down to the warm weather to face teams that always play in warm weather, are designed and built to play in warm weather and don't have to acclimate themselves. Call it what you want, but if you're watching or playing a game under cloudless sunny skies in 70 degree weather in December, you're playing something, but it aint real football.

There is only one thing I have to say about the game about 133 hours away from this post. The better team will end up in the rose bowl. And being a bleeding scarlet and gray OSU fan, I pray it is us. Nevertheless, which ever team makes it to the Rose Bowl needs to be the better team. Because to be totally honest, our Big-10 conference is in dire need of a big win against a formidable foe. Oregon,USC,Cinci (That might be pushing it, Our D would shut them up pretty quickly), Boise st.,TCU, I dont care who it is...The Big-10 needs a Big-Win. Iowa, My hat is off to you this year. You have shown the Big-10 you deserve to be a **Big-10** title contender this year. Did I believe you would make it past that? H*ell no. There are way better teams than you and you made it by almost undefeated by the skin of your teeth. The Hawkeyes have alot of proving to do before they can justify "Their right to be National Championship contenders" Sh*it. I'll be damned if your win-loss record over the past few years doesn't warrant ESPN to critisize you. Im sorry, but play like winners consistantly, and you will be treated like winners consistantly. Not trying to toot my own horn, but look at OSU's win loss record over the past 4 years. Sure, I know go ahead and throw this in my face, "OSU cant finish and win big games" Whatever. Winning is winning. And until they initiate some sort of playoff system it will stay this way. So bite down and get the right dentist on that one skeptics. On any given saturday any team can lose to any team, right hawkeyes? So ill end with this, as I only meant to say like one thing anyway. Hawkeyes, Bring your game. With or without your QB, bring your game. Because the team that wins this game will be once again representing the Big-10 in another BCS bowl game. And ill be damn*ed if I have to hear a whole nother years' worth of b*itching and moaning from SEC and PAC-10 fans complaining about how the Big-10 should be no more. Let me ask you one question (I swear ill stop after this) What conference has more Heisman Winning and National Championship Winning teams? The Big-10 or SEC or Pac-10?
    Go Buckeyes!
    Signed,
    An OSU faithful.

The Big 10 (They have won 24 Championships)

    1. Notre Dame - 13
    2. Alabama - 10
    3. USC - 9
    3. Michigan - 9
    4.. Ohio State - 7
    4. Oklahoma - 7

Big 10 has 16 Heismen, (With Ohio State tied with Notre Dame and USC for first place in all teams.)
*counting former member Chicago and current member Penn State dating to before joining the Big 10
    Ohio State:
    1) 1944 - Les Horvath, QB
    2) 1950 - Vic Janowicz, RB
    3) 1955 - Howard Cassady, RB
    4) 1974 - Archie Griffin, RB
    5) 1975 - Archie Griffin, RB
    6) 1995 - Eddie George, RB

Nice comment #30!! Ohio State will probably win next week against a very wounded Iowa team. So what! Then they will go out and lose AGAIN in their bowl game like the rest of the Big Ten! Why is it that ONLY IOWA seems to be the one that can contend with teams in other conferences! Remember they have beaten Florida, LSU and South Carolina over the past 5 years. Look what they have done this year with mostly FRESHMEN on offense. It took their qb getting hurt for them to finally lose. Would have liked to seen the matchup nextweek with Stanzi and Pryor. Now just hoping Iowa stays in the game and puts up more of a fight than crappy PSU.
Im sorry PSU losing 2 big games in your HOME STADIUM!!! No wonder the Big Ten gets ripped on all the time. OSU is good every year. The other two supposed powerhouses in Michigan and Penn State are terrible. Michigan just sucks this year and Penn State is soo overrated its crazy.
