Pryor expects ‘electric’ crowd at Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP)—Welcome home, Terrelle Pryor.

No. 15 Ohio State and its talented dual-threat quarterback visit No. 11 Penn State in a high-stakes Big Ten game. For Pryor, it will be his first game at Beaver Stadium since the western Pennsylvania native spurned Penn State last year to end one of the most publicized recruiting races in recent memory.

Nittany Lions fans haven’t forgotten, and Pryor knows it.

“It’s going to be a crazy atmosphere, but that’s what we come here for,” said Pryor, a sophomore. “We’re going (in) as a team, so if I get spit on, they spit on the whole team and stuff like that.”

As if the annual grudge match between the Buckeyes (7-2, 4-1 Big Ten) and Nittany Lions (8-1, 4-1) needed any subplots.

Both teams could use a signature win to solidify their credentials for a BCS bowl berth.

The game also will break their tie for second place in the conference, putting the victor in better position for at least a share of the Big Ten crown should unbeaten Iowa falter down the stretch.

“We definitely feel like we have something to prove. There’s a whole bunch of talk that we haven’t played anybody yet,” Penn State receiver Derek Moye said.

The Nittany Lions have won five straight by lopsided margins, though they lost their toughest game this season when they fell to the Hawkeyes in late September.

A loss could put the Buckeyes in more late-season trouble. Their goal to win at least a share of their fifth consecutive Big Ten title is already in jeopardy, and they host Iowa next week.

But there’s not a Buckeye that’s looking beyond the Nittany Lions, a team that leads the Big Ten in total offense (429 yards per game) and total defense (84 yards).

“It starts up front, very physical, very strong, aggressive style, not unlike ours,” Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said.

That sounds a lot like something his Penn State counterpart, Hall of Famer Joe Paterno, would say. Games between the Nittany Lions and Buckeyes usually hinge on field position and big defensive plays, whether in Happy Valley or the Horseshoe.

Tressel, like Paterno, often likes to play things close to his sweater vest. Their styles pay off given that the two big-name coaches have 616 victories between them—Paterno the leader among major college coaches with 391, Tressel with 225.

In fact, Saturday’s game will be the first time two FBS coaches with a combined 600 or more wins will have met in the regular season, according to Penn State’s sports information department. The other time it happened was in the 2006 Orange Bowl, when Penn State and Paterno beat Florida State and Bobby Bowden, who is five behind Paterno on the career victory chart.

But Paterno doesn’t like to talk about his career stats, or to compare himself to Tressel or any of his other colleagues, for that matter.

“No, I’m not going to compare myself, heck,” Paterno said when a reporter broached the topic this week. “I’ll compare your writing with somebody else’s writing if you want me to do that, or something like that, but that’s not— no.”

He’s had more immediate concerns on his mind, like containing Pryor.

If there’s any defense that’s up to the challenge, it’s a Penn State unit that is the stingiest in the nation in allowing just 9.3 points per game.

The Nittany Lions’ defense leads the league in sacks, while the athletic linebacking trio of Navorro Bowman, Josh Hull and Sean Lee is one of the best in the country.

Mobile Northwestern quarterback Mike Kafka lit up the Penn State defense early last week before getting hurt, though the Nittany Lions have done a good job this season in containing other running quarterbacks such as Illinois’ Juice Williams and Michigan’s Tate Forcier.

While Ohio State’s defense (11.7 points and 260 yards per game) can go toe-to-toe with the Nittany Lions, the offense has struggled at times, with much of the blame pinned on an inconsistent Pryor.

Pryor started out slow “but the last two games he’s been very, very overpowering, really. He’s running well, he’s throwing the ball well deep,” Paterno said.

Pryor would love to do the same against the Nittany Lions at Beaver Stadium, especially after his fourth-quarter fumble last year set up Penn State’s go-ahead score in a 13-6 loss in Columbus.

Penn State fans are ready to pounce on Pryor’s every move. Many blue-and-white backers still recall that during recruiting, Pryor called the Penn State campus in rural central Pennsylvania too “countryside” for his taste.

“I came here to Ohio State to play in this type of game. I have my teammates with me, all 70 guys,” Pryor said. “We’ll feed off of that, whether it’s our fans or their fans. It’s going to be exciting, electric.”

Gee atul s, if THE Ohio State would play teams like Troy and Coastal Carolina in our non-conference schedule each and every year, we would add more wins to our record every year.

Instead, in our non-conference schedule we play home and home against teams like Washington, Texas, and USC. I'd like to see a SEC team play teams like that in their non-conference schedule.

Oh wait, if you did that, chances are you wouldn't be anywhere near the (mythical) national championship game. And you claim the SEC to be the better conference. Keep your delusions, I'll take the Big Ten every time.

Why does everyone insult "Tresselball"? More often than not, HE WINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't care how ugly a gameplan is, as long as they win, I am a very happy camper.

If you don't like the way Coach Tressel calls a gameplan, get a new team and root for them. Stop your @#$%ing and bellyaching, and GO AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Back inside, let's zip through the last 12 minutes of the game. Whoops, what's this I see, a TD? Wow! Second OSU possession, OSU's offensive line showed up today, look at them go. Ok, look, it's time for Tressel ball anytime now, OSU has a 7 point lead after all. Here we go, stopped at the 29 yard line. Yep, no FG attempt to get 3 more points on the board, that's a long shot with a new FG kicker - wait a minute, field position is more important, it wouldn't matter who's kicking for OSU, PUNT. Yeah, there you go, here comes some Tressel ball now. Ok, fast forward a little more, OSU's possession again. What's this? Oh, yeah, run Saine up the middle 2 times in a row, and short of a miracle third down, you can flush that set down the commode. PSU ball.

It's just about time for PSU to score, we'll be happy to let them back in the game.

Going away again. More entertaining things to do outside than watch this. I'll get the whole game in about 3 minutes of fast forwarding, it's easier.

Well, the 3:30 PM game between OSU and PSU is underway. First possession, it's so good to see that some things never change, first play Saine up the middle for 2 - 3 yards and PSU was so aware that it was coming that they were tripping over each other because of how tightly they were bunched up where Saine ran. Next play Pryor throws it so high that even rubber man with 20' arms couldnt' catch that pass. Third down, Pryor could run through a huge hole that opens up, and has a good chance to get very close to a first down if not make it, but OSU coaching wants him to pass, he does, and it's dropped. After about 25 - 30 seconds, it's PSU ball.

Over, and over, and over, and over. I'm going outside and enjoy a nice afternoon, the game's just started and I can't watch this mess anymore. I'll just check on the final score along with some other teams when this ugly thing is finished.

I live in the Midwest and without a doubt, the Big Ten is my favorite conference and I want it and it's teams to succeed as much as possible. However, there is absolutely no way that the Big Ten teams, the way that they are now, could ever seriously compete with the SEC. It pains me to say it but the SEC is just far superior at this time. I really hope that this changes, and SOON! But for now, the reality is clear as day. To you guys "challenging" an SEC team to come to a Big Ten stadium in the winter, be careful what you wish for. If it were to happen, it would be downright ugly and the Big Ten would be embarssed on a much larger scale.

Who cares?? Make your playing actions do the talking Pryor!

You're not ever going to be an NFL QB. Better play WR or TE next year. One of those positions may be better for you.

For all you SEC slappys who always bash the Big Ten, I have a question? Why won't any of your teams come up to Big Ten country in late October or November and play one of our teams? I will tell you why. FEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!

SEC teams couldn't handle the cold, the wind, the rain, or the fans in the stadium. Sure, it is nice to play in 70+ degree weather in November, but to really prove your mettle, you have to play in the cold to really know how good your team is.

Extra question for the University of Tebow. When was the last time the Tebows played in a game when the temperature was under 60 degrees???? Was it in my lifetime (I am 50).

Jimbo-who are the gators playing this week? UCF? I was a golden knight so I know your nonsense schedules. Always avoiding us up North teams when the temp gets cold. Afraid your players are going catcha cold and get a boo boo? Didn't you used to be a seminole fan before the gators became good? Again being a former UCF student I know the fair weather fans down there in Florida.

B-You still hanging out to a glimmer of hope that Pryor will ever amount to anything and you think Tressel is playing mind games with faking his injury? Wow. Not a smart move because Penn State's defense will now be foaming at their mouths to get to Pryor and take him out now that he is supposedly hurt. I do not think Tressel has much in his mind other then his lame tressel ball to come up with any mind games for that matter. Go bucks but it will be a bad next 3 weeks for us. This team and coach are way over rated. Not a top 40 team behind their supposed blue chip qb let alone top ten as they had us early in the year. Tressel needs to go and for once lets get a known coach and not some coach from timbukto. Throughout the years we could have had bobby knight but took eldon, glen mason but took cooper, and urban meyer but took tressel. I think we need a whole new philosophy in our OSU athletics department because every athletic director has been too scared to go with big time coaches. Maybe they are too irrogant or insecure in their abilities as an athletic director to go with a big time coach.
