With Floyd back, competition with Tate resumes

  • Print

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP)—Notre Dame receivers Golden Tate and Michael Floyd are friendly rivals again.

“We both want to be the No. 1 receiver, so we compete every day,” Tate said.

Tate took over the role as 19th-ranked Notre Dame’s top receiver when Floyd went down with a broken left collarbone against Michigan State six weeks ago. With Floyd returning Saturday against Navy (6-3), the receivers say the competition to be the No. 1 receiver is on again.

“We just have high expectations for each other.” Floyd said. “How well he does, just makes me want to work harder. When I have a good game, it makes him work a little harder. It doesn’t really matter as long as we win.”

Heading into the season, most observers probably would have agreed that Floyd was the more polished receiver while the speedy Tate was more of a work in progress, since he came out of high school as a tailback and spent the past two seasons learning the position.

But after carrying much of the load for Notre Dame (6-2) the past five games, Tate has developed into a more complete receiver. He’s developed so much that some are talking about Tate having an outside chance of winning the Heisman Trophy.

In the five games Floyd was out, Tate averaged 7.4 catches and 125.2 receiving yards a game and three carries and 29.6 yards a game rushing. The 5-11, 195-pound junior from Hendersonville, Tenn., said the key to his development is he understands the game better.

“I know that I can run, I know that I can catch. But at some time I knew that you have to have a little football IQ,” Tate said. “You have to understand why this play goes this way. I think once I understood that, my game elevated a lot more.”

Even coach Charlie Weis, who usually says he’s not surprised by much, concedes he didn’t see Tate being as productive as he has been because he knew teams would be focusing on him with Floyd out.

Last season when Floyd missed two games with an injury, Tate’s production went down. Not this year.

“The advantage has been to Golden,” Weis said. “I give a lot of the credit to Golden for mentally being able to handle all of the nuances that we’ve asked him to do while Michael’s gone.”

Weis said with Floyd out the Irish coaches had to “draw ‘em up in the dirt” to find ways to get Tate the ball, having him play every receiver position, tailback, fullback and quarterback in the wildcat.

The question now is: What happens with Floyd back?

The Irish plan to ease Floyd back into the game plan while still drawing up plays in the dirt for Tate. Having Floyd back, Weis said, balances the offense and takes pressure off of Tate.

Floyd, a sophomore from St. Paul, Minn., was averaging 27.5 yards a catch when he was injured. His 320 yards receiving in the first two games of the season marks the second best start to a season by an Irish receiver.

Receivers coach Rob Ianello said it was easy to see how excited Floyd is to be back at practice.

“He’s a big-time competitor and he’s getting another chance to compete when he thought he wasn’t going to be able to help the team,” Ianello said. “I think he’s excited to get that chance to do that. Not that many people get another chance after you think maybe your season was done.”

Floyd, who has been taking part on a limited basis in practice since Oct. 13, said being on the sideline gave him more time to study film so he could work more on technique.

Tate is eager to see what opponents do now that Floyd is back.

“I’m curious to see how the defense is going to react, what coverages they’re going to throw at us to try to beat us,” he said.

OMG, leave it to a disgruntled Michigan fan to come to a ND board and try and blow off some steam. Facts point that ND and UM are two of the most successful programs to take the field. But the fact is that UM is hurting because "RichRod" isn't pulling his weight. This season's game between ND and UM was a coin flip from going our way. So you really have no reason to boast about that victory. What UM has to worry about is that you just got spanked by Illinois like a 4 yr old in K-Mart and Purdue is looking to rip thru you too!

You might as well lost to one in 2007. UM beat your ass and they got beat by Appy state. Therefore you were worse off than getting beat bye them yourself. As far as the outcome on Sat goes. You will see afterwards that I was right. to much speed for ND. And I do believe Warren is a pretty good corner. Robinson will have the def ready for the three stooges. You just better hope NDdef is ready for the speed.

Shawn, yeah you can post your comments any where thats one of the great things about a game like this one, but as far as "They can stay independent and keep making there cupcake schedules, cause they cant compete in a confrence." Hers some facts for you. ND Football does not join a confernce becuase their football program alone pays for thier eniter athletic budget. They mony made by other teams goes to different programs outside of athletics. Why should ND join a conference and be forced to share that kind of money with their opppnets? All other ND sports are in a Conferance.
Heres the simple truths of it Both teams have been down the last couple of years and No ND has not won a major Bowl in the last few years but the Irish have never lost to a IIAA school that they paid to get on their schedule either, in fact ND has never lost to a II AA school becuase they dont schedule them.
All that really matters is that which is said on the feild and at the end the story closes this year ND34 UM 21. Sorry but your freshman QB and weak corners just wont pack the punch to knock out the Fighting Irish

Shawn, I'm not going to call you names or disrespect you cause Mighigan is a good program in general, but they are down right now. If you don't see that then that's your fault, I see 6 to 8 wins depending on your QB, whichever RR goes with. If you claim our schedule is bad just look at the facts, not to mention your on our schedule so you are only downplaying your team and other in the Big 10 we play. Not only USC, but BC, Pitt and Mich St. are usually always good. Take a look at SOS over the last 20 years and look at who is on the schedule in the future. Not just Oklahoma, but others in the works too. Furthermore if ND does win, will you own up to your comments and kiss our asses...or better yet just don't come to our team page and post on our boards anymore?????
I doubt it, but just shut up till after the game is played.

Yea they got beat by Appy state. But I recall them shutting out ND two games after that. So whats that make them then smart guy. Hmmmm? They can stay independent and keep making there cupcake schedules, cause they cant compete in a confrence. The only true test they got every year is UM and USC. And another thing pecker head. I also think UM beat Flordia that year in a bowl game huh. Thats right. Havent heard about ND doing that in a while. Better get your facts straight, cause you made yourself and your team look like fools.

I agree with every word you said Sherbert. da fat man obviously dont know @#$% about football or any other sport as far as that goes. Just to walk on to a field like UM or ND or any div 1 powerhouse says that you are a hell of an athlete. My guess is da fat man was abused as a child and became very FAT and LAZY. He is jealous that he could never be in the shoes of these fine athletes at this fine school. Here is a lesson for ya fat @#$%. U of M, most wins of any football program anywhere. Most bowl appearances back to back. Oh yea, and most televised games out of all NCAA football programs. Seems that if you knew anything and did'nt have (dog@#$%) for brains, you might feel a little different about these athletes and who they play for. My guess is your a Notre Dame fan and are just pissed off cause UM owns you. I think if Im correct that UM is up by like 5 games. Could be even more. Next time do your homework before you run your mouth you piece of DOG@#$%!!

I guess you wouldn't know what it is to put in extra work would you? To have a drive to be the best at what you do? Exercise and practice for five hours in the July heat. Just to do it again three hours later on your two-a-days? To go above and beyond what is required and give everything you have? Then after it is all over. Instead of hitching a ride with a friend because you are so worn out, ride your bike as hard as you can the ten miles home, just to make sure that you didn't leave anything out there. You don't know the satisfaction of feeling that accomplishment do you? You spent so long accepting mediocre that you eventually accepted the result to the point of embracing it as your name... What a shame that all of that emotion and passion you show against Michigan was wasted on words. My Sympathy to you.

Warren had better keep getting that EXTRA practice time. It won't help though; you can refine dogsh*t all you want but in the end it's still dogtsh*t. That's why the Wolverqueens are screwed, they have dogsh*t recruits and a piece of dogsh*t for a coach. That's weird since they come from a chickensh*t state.
