Weis sees BCS chance—if Notre Dame keeps winning
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP)—Charlie Weis likes his team’s chances of earning a Bowl Championship Series berth—if No. 19 Notre Dame keeps winning.
Gator Bowl president Rick Catlett does, too. Catlett said the Gator Bowl would love to have a Fighting Irish team that finishes 10-2, but can’t imagine it happening.
“I can tell you that four BCS bowl directors are hoping they finish 10-2 and in the top 14 in the BCS poll,” Catlett said.
That’s because Notre Dame, with its tradition of eight national championships, seven Heisman Trophy winners and a national fan base, brings TV ratings and strong ticket sales.
“Everyone involved in the bowl business is aware of Notre Dame, aware of their fan base, aware of the economic impact it would have on their bowl,” Rose Bowl executive director Mitch Dorger said.
But there has been plenty of speculation that the Irish could be left out at 10-2. With TCU or Boise State likely earning an automatic BCS berth, and the Southeastern Conference virtually a lock to grab an at-large bid along with its guaranteed spot, two berths likely would be left. The Irish could be competing for those spots with USC, a team that beat the Irish last month, the second-place Big Ten team and others.
Borger, Sugar Bowl CEO Paul Hoolahan and Orange Bowl CEO Eric Poms said Thursday that Notre Dame wouldn’t be a sure thing for a BCS berth at 10-2.
“Are they an attractive team? Undoubtedly,” Hoolahan said. “Will they be attractive enough? It’s hard to say at this point.”
The Irish have been left out at 10-2 before, in Tyrone Willingham’s first year as coach in 2002. But that team was embarrassed 44-13 by USC in the regular season-finale. In 1998, the Irish were left out at 9-2. Both seasons the Irish played in the Gator Bowl.
The Irish (6-2) must finish in the top 14 of the final BCS standings to be eligible to play in the Fiesta, Orange, Rose or Sugar bowls. A top eight finish guarantees a berth. Heading into Saturday’s game against Navy (6-3), the Irish are 22nd.
The Irish play one team ahead of them next week, No. 14 Pittsburgh (7-1), which is 13th in the BCS standings. Plenty of other teams ahead of the Irish still play one another, including this week’s games: No. 9 LSU at No. 3 Alabama; and No. 15 Ohio State at No. 11 Penn State.
“We’ve just got to take care of our business. We can’t worry about what everyone else is doing,” Weis said. “They’re going to knock each other off the way it happens every year.”
Notre Dame’s history wouldn’t give them an advantage, Poms said.
“There are a lot of teams out there that have a lot of rich history; Notre Dame is one of them,” Poms said. “But we have to look at a lot of factors, including what works best for that particular year and what other programs would be in play.”
Dorger said if somehow Iowa got into the BCS national championship game, it would be hard for the Rose Bowl to pass on Penn State if the Nittany Lions finished 11-1.
If not picked for the BCS, the Irish could go to the Gator or Cotton bowls— the last year in their contracts that either of those two bowls can invite the Irish.
“This is going to be our last shot,” Catlett said.
The Irish would need to be at least 8-4, Catlett said.
If the Irish don’t earn a BCS berth and aren’t invited to either the Gator or Cotton Bowl, they would have to wait and see which bowls are unable to fill their slots because Notre Dame isn’t part of any other bowl agreements, school spokesman John Heisler said.

Perhaps Weis has a longer leash as an alum, but he proved to be a mediocre bore in his 5 year stint, certainly no better than Davie or Willingham. If he really loves his school, Weis will do what's right... and announce his resignation after the UConn game!

How's that BCS approach working, Chuck? That's just bad coaching - setting up your players and looking past your next game with Navy. Way to go, Chuck. Whatever happen to, 'One game at a time' and earn what you deserve - not, 'we deserve a BCS bowl'. You're an all-star coach!

Secondly the biggest problem with the BCS and all the bowl games is the teams who face each other. No where in this article when describing the criteria of who gets in what bowl was there any mention of MATCHING BALANCED TEAMS! Its all contracts and availability. ND went through that horrible bowl streak because they were constantly put in bowl games against much better teams because of money. I was over joyed with the Hawaii game because it was there first real chance to win a bowl game in fifteen years. I love my Irish, Clausen is a good college QB and we will see what happens...

The question is also, will Golden Tate jump ship as well?
There is no history of Notre Dame players leaving early in football that I know of. If Claussen and Tate go, well, they might be the first. This would be bad, but not a total destruction of the program. Weis has had three very successful recruiting seasons in a row. They have 18 commitments so far and are ranked 10th in recruiting for 2010. So the future looks good.
Walk-on? I'm impressed. That's no joke either. Walk-ons usually have more heart for the game than most scholarship players. Blue collar guys win games because they do the hard work.
I'm also an offensive co-ordinator for semi-pro team. I know a little about the game from the sidelines as well as from the press box and living room sofa.

What will ND be like next year then their QB goes pro?

Charlie Weis (one S, not two) has a record of 35-23 in the 4-plus years he's been at Notre Dame. Only one losing season in that time. I know a lot of ND fans aren't satisfied with that and want Charlie gone. I don't agree with them because he had to start over in 2007. Let's see if you're shooting your mouth off this time next year. If the Irish are no better next year than this, I will be on the bandwagon to get a new coach.

Nah...never happen but thanks for the AWESOME laugh!! ROFL.

What was Weiss's record over the past 3 years?
I don't care what you made, go to another board for that.
You wrote about the game, I played the game for 3 years at the DI level.

I give up, you're a fountain of factual veracity. That USC was ranked 5th when we played them is "besides the point", I surrender to your superior intellect. Yes, we gave up 500 yards, and had 1st and goal to go with less than a minute to play, down 7. But, that's "besides the point", yeah?
That #2 ranked Texas gave up 420 yards to unranked Texas Tech shows exactly the opposite of vulnerable. Okay? Happy now?
BTW: N.D. is ranked 19th by other than nitwit yahoo! children with keyboards. If we get four more wins, we're going January bowling, maybe BCS.
Get over it.

"Where was Florida before Meyer came along?" Ever heard of The Ole Ball Coach]
Who are you replying to? I didn't ask you about Florida program and where is your question mark???
yes, I know Steve Spurrier VERY well: he was our first round draft choice, and I watched him, at Kezar Stadium, replace an injured John Brodie and lead my 49ers into the playoffs his rookie year.
[Every big time program can boast about their alums in the NFL.
And Ricky Waters really, Ricky Waters? How about TIm Brown? ] It's Watters, not Waters. And YOU'RE the one stating Notre Dame had no players since the "roaring 40's" you dimwit. So what do you do? Make my point for me by mentioning Tim Brown. Very good, continue on....
[ND along with the Big 10 have been stuck in the past and are just now finally catching up with the rest of college football.]
Bwahahaha....Ohio State has won or played in HOW many national Championship games this decade, struggler? You're a riot.
Now take your well-spanked backside and go home, sonny.

Some stats:
ND's WINS - opp combine record: 22 wins - 29 losses
ND's LOSSES - opp combine record: 11 wins - 6 losses
ND has only played one ranked opponent thus far - and LOST
Randomly picked University of Oregon, also in the BCS hunt who is mentioned below:
UO's WINS - opp combine record: 26 wins - 23 losses
UO's Loss - opp combine record: 8-0
UO only team to beat Utah this season
At the time, Oregon has played FIVE ranked opponents - winning four of those games and only dropping one to an undefeated team.
So, very few actual facts support the cause that ND is enroute to a BCS bid. You just can't ignore the fact that your losses came from a team ranked 9th in their conference and USC who is slightly better than average in their conference. The only currently ranked team you've played is USC - who rolled up over 500 yards on your soft D.
ND is soft, boys. Very, very soft. 27th per Yahoo football fans is about right - surprisingly, in predicting outcome of games and bowls, users are nearly as accurate as the "experts". 27th, about right....ND stinks. They will be exposed, once again, as the laughing stock of college football.
ND fans are such a sorry, angry and bitter group and just can't seem to come to terms with the fact that in 07 they won 2 games all season, or how pathetic and what a joke their decade long bowl results have meant. What have they meant? That one win, since 1994, Oh, my - 94(!) exposes that you don't belong to be on the field with these other teams.

Every fan believes his team is the "IT" program. And sportswriters and sportscasters have to play to the largest fan base in the country. Most of them don't like it, but they do it because it's part of the job. I wrote five books on the Packers. Am I Packer fan? No! I did it because Packer fans buy anything about their team and I made over 250 grand off them.
You are in way over your head here. Better that you quit before someone else embarrasses you more than I have already.

All true...but with the country's population growing year by year, the amount of talent grows while the amount of teams stay the same...eventually, there is so much talent, teams like Utah whip Alabama, and Boise St beats an Oklahoma. And, "oddly enough" those are the two teams you mentioned being allowed into the system....
You're correct, it is an unfair system as is. Anti-Trust is correct.
And yes, they weren't labeled the "Damn Yankees" because we all loved them. It was envy. Even the Atlanta Braves success had a lot to do with having their own TV station deal.
I grew up a Washington Senator fan...and when they just started getting decent, off to Minnesota they went...then we get another Senator team...they start to play decent ball...off to Texas they go. Hated the Yankees.....success. Always loved "The Mick" though.
Why am I an Irish fan? Because my mother was Armenian...ya know? I think she had a crush on Ara.....so, since that 1966 tie with Michigan St, I've watched every game I could. Through the ups and downs, and listening to the haters try to justify their envy.
The fact is, this season has turned very promising for the future of Notre Dame football.. I had my doubts about the direction Weis was moving us...now that has lessened. Some bad game management the first two games though. He's learning there is more than "X's and O's" to being a successful college coach.
Solid offense, good young talent, good recruiting....my hopes are high for the rest of this season, and next year. Be great if we go 10-2. BCS? Could happen, but a match against a 10-2 Wisconsin team in a January bowl would be grand too. Or if we go 9-3, matched up against Virginia Tech would be a good barometer of where we are.
Let's see, still some games to play....Navy is no pushover.

The reason why ND does not play D2 teams is because they are not in a conference. I know every team has their ups and downs, but when ND is down their fans and the media still believe they are the "IT" program.
