No. 8 Iowa not looking past Northwestern

  • Print

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP)—Much of the buzz surrounding No. 8 Iowa has been about its resume, and whether the Hawkeyes can truly be considered national title contenders when they keep sneaking past everyone.

Throw in a showdown with No. 15 Ohio State in Columbus next week that could determine the Big Ten title and Saturday’s home date with Northwestern (5-4, 2-3 Big Ten) has all the makings of the classic trap game.

Let’s be honest, though. Every week’s a trap game for Iowa.

The Hawkeyes (9-0, 5-0) have survived them all so far, despite key injuries and fourth-quarter deficits in four of the nine games.

“I think we’re getting great leadership,” Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. “I think the team overall gets it. I’m not taking anything for granted. But I think they understand we’re going to be up against it week in and week out.”

This weekend should be no different, even if the Wildcats’ hopes for an upset rest on the tender left hamstring of quarterback Mike Kafka.

Kafka tweaked the hamstring last week against No. 11 Penn State with the Wildcats ahead 10-3. Sophomore backup Dan Persa led Northwestern to just a field goal after that as the Nittany Lions rolled to a 34-13 win.

Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald said he expects Kafka to play, though Persa was listed as the co-starter on a depth chart released this week.

Few players in the Big Ten are as important to their team as Kafka is to Northwestern. He leads all Big Ten quarterbacks in passing yardage, completions, completion percentage and total offense, and he leads the Wildcats in rushing with 248 yards and six touchdowns.

Despite Kafka’s heroics, Northwestern ranks just 74th in the nation with 25.7 points per game and will face a stout Iowa defense Saturday.

Iowa allowed Indiana to score just 10 points following six Hawkeyes turnovers in last week’s 42-24 win. The Hawkeyes have also forced 26 turnovers this season, including 18 interceptions.

“Iowa is one of those teams you can set your watch by what they’re going to do from a schematic standpoint,” Fitzgerald said. “They do what they do very well.”

The Hawkeyes offense has been all over the map this season, which in many ways is related to the performance of quarterback Ricky Stanzi.

Stanzi had one of the worst quarters an Iowa signal caller has ever had last week, throwing four picks in the third as Indiana jumped ahead 24-14 and seemed poised to end the Hawkeyes dream season.

But with the unwavering support of Ferentz, Stanzi bounced back with two quick TD throws and Iowa scored 28 points in the fourth quarter—more than they had scored in all but two games up to that point.

The Hawkeyes, who have scored exactly as many points as Northwestern this season, have battled through injuries all season. They are down to their last proven running back, true freshman Brandon Wegher—though he responded with a career-best 118 yards rushing and three TDs last week.

“I think Brandon’s pretty comfortable and has been,” Ferentz said. “You have to be patient. I think that’s offense in general. You have to have patience and a lot of people don’t.”

Anyone who believes that Iowa will simply cruise past Northwestern at home clearly hasn’t seen the Hawkeyes play this season or doesn’t know the series’ recent history.

Northwestern has won three of the last four in the series, stopping Iowa four times inside the Wildcats 10-yard line late in a 22-17 win in Iowa City in 2008.

“We’re doing a good job of focusing on who we’ve got the next week,” said Iowa wide receiver Trey Stross. “Close games definitely make you a little nervous.”

Something else to consider is that Northwestern needs 1 more win to be bowl-eligible. Illinois is playing great for the second week in a row and NU can't count on a victory next week. Therefore, they will be motivated to win today. Kafka isn't 100%, and Persa just doesn't have the same stuff (I doubt Kafka would have thrown that last INT), and Iowa may not have their starter for the 2nd half, so it could come down to the last possession.

Well, not necessarily. Like many fans you are limiting the definition of fanship to tribalism: "us" vs. "them." The school of choice is the primary "us" but the conference is part of the wider tribe.

A little tribalism is just fine and inevitable but my preferred type of fan is one who is a fan of the game rather than the tribe. I almost always root for the B10 football teams in the bowls, but I'm a bigger fan of basketball than football and I think B10 basketball conference games are not as much fun to watch as some other conferences (at least in recent years). By the end of the B10 season, I'm so sick of watching B10 play, that I hope most of them lose in the NCAA tournament.

I live in Ohio too, but at our neighborhood Block Parties (attended by a few Wolverine and many Buckeye fans alike) it's really more about mutual respect...that and good-natured smack!

But it will make life a lot nicer if we can get past NW and take care of OSU.

I'm glad Iowa beat Penn State last year, but took no solace in derailing their splendid run at the NC...when it's out of conf..it's a reflection on all of us...Go Big Ten!!!

    Travis,

My prayers are with you, the great state of texas, and all of my brothers and sisters in uniform around the world (OIF 3 vet here, 2004-2005). Thank you for bringing this back to Earth, we can sit here and talk about who will beat who, but what happened in Ft. Hood trumps all of this. God bless you.

i am an Iowa Hawkeyes fan that lives in Ohio currently. I always take criticism from Buckeye fans where every I go because I wear the Hawkeye colors. that is ok, I am a true big ten fan. The Iowa Hawkeyes many be having a cinderella type season, but I give them credit for always playing hard football every game. Kirk Ferentz has turned Iowa into contenders year after year. Iowa still has a tough road ahead of them, but again they are looking like the 2002 Buckeye title run. Go Hawkeyes! I hope the big ten makes a statement in the bowl season and stop the critics from slamming the big ten.

I think what most people are missing is that this is how Iowa always plays. Since Ferentz has been coach the game plan is to play disciplined and straight forward. Keep the game close and have your guys make a play at the end to win. Last year Iowa lost the close games this year they are winning. Maybe Iowa blows teams out if they had more experienced rb's but even with Shonn Greene Iowa's games were always close

    Champ--

"we will beat Iowa pretty bad next weekend"

Well then, Mr. McFly with your Delorian and sports almanac, why even play the game. If you say OSU will win... it is already done then, right?

Secondly, please stop saying "we". You are not on the team. You are a fan. Even if you are a OSU grad, which I doubt, "we" is still not acceptable. Sitting your fat ass on the couch and hoping Pryor will live up to expectations, and then beating your wife after a loss to Purdue, does not make you a member of the team.

"We" is reserved for the Buckeye players who actually have a say in the outcome of the game.

And, Buckeye fan, I hope you cheer for the Hawks in the bowl season. Lord knows OSU can't win a bowl game. Scoreboard.

good post fat man. i'm a die hard buckeye fan but I would like to see Iowa go undefeated. I've come to realize with all the Big 10 underperforming talk, i'm not just rooting the Buckeyes anymore. I still believe that no team in the nation will ever be able to go undefeated i the Big 10.

Go Hawks! The Iowa Hawkeyes deserve an undefeated season!

It's been stressful watching some games this season, but we keep catching them when we can. We have seen them play hundreds of times over the years and this season is fun!

My kids go to UF and are Florida Gators, so must say Go Gators!

"da fat man" I sincerely wish more of the posters on these boards had the class you just displayed. I've been an Iowa fan for 50 years, and when they are not in the mix, always root for the big ten team who is representing the conference no matter where the venue or what it is. There is plenty to talk about regarding the vagaries of football from week to week, without resorting to the downright idiotic garbage so often displayed in posts. Any "big ten fan" who roots against another team playing outside the conference in the post season (once the conference positions have been settled) is no big ten fan, just an envious hater.

We Iowa fans have learned that we should never take any team for granted, and this year, that has been in spades, given the heart stopping victories they keep pulling out. I only wish for a fairly played game with no injuries to anyone on either team that lets the outcome determine who is "best" on that given day.

Good luck to your Buckeyes this weekend too, they have a real test in Happy Valley.

As an OSU fan, I still hope the Hawkeyes win out this season. It's been a dream season for them and I'd like to see it continue. They've shown a ton of heart and it's a great story! Perhaps beating the Bucks in the Shoe will convince Tressel to scrap Pryor and start over at QB??? Anyway, best of luck Hawkeyes!

If Iowa plays like they did last week they might be in for a battle against the wildcats.
