Miles embraces break from SEC play

  • Print

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP)—Les Miles figures there’s little use in trying to ignore the fact that No. 9 LSU’s game at Alabama on Nov. 7 is looming largest on the minds of just about everyone associated with the program.

He only hopes his players will see Saturday night’s home game against struggling Tulane as a much-needed opportunity to get better before LSU (6-1) returns to its Southeastern Conference schedule.

“We understand that our greatest ally at this point is time—to improve, do better and play strong and play dominant against our next opponent.” Miles said Monday. “Then we’ll look around and see where we are at.”

Tulane (2-5) is coming off a 43-6 loss at Southern Mississippi, its third straight loss, and Tulane hasn’t beaten LSU since 1982.

Miles nonetheless referred to the Green Wave as “dangerous,” and said his players must continue to build on the substantial improvement they showed in a 31-10 victory over Auburn.

Jordan Jefferson passed for a career-high 242 yards and threw a pair of touchdown passes against Auburn, going a long way toward putting his miserable performance against Florida (96 yards passing, five sacks) behind him.

It was only the ninth career start for the sophomore, and it was the first time this season he looked comfortable throwing deep and trusting his receivers to make plays, something he’d pledged to do during LSU’s recent bye week.

“What I think we’re finding is, each game he continues to improve, he understands, he learns, he sees the field well, and I’m not surprised,” Miles said. “There’s no ability for a coach to take you beyond experience. … You need as many snaps as you can get, and then, it helps him translate those plays in a game more effectively, especially for a guy that has the talent that he has.”

A pair of freshman also emerged on offense, with Russell Shepard scoring on a 69-yard run and Rueben Randle hauling in a tough 31-yard catch along the sideline.

Miles said a number of young players who had not seen much action until the Auburn game “will play key roles during the rest of the season.”

If the rest of the season goes as planned, LSU could re-emerge as a contender to win the SEC and compete for a national title. If LSU pulls out a victory at No. 2 Alabama, the Tigers would vault into first place in the SEC Western Division, setting up a potential rematch with Florida in the SEC title game.

“Our football team recognizes that if they do the things that they are capable of, we’ll get to a position where we’ll play for everything that we want,” Miles said.

The timing of the bye week appeared to work in LSU’s favor, giving the Tigers an opportunity to take a hard look at what went wrong in their 13-3 loss to the Gators on Oct. 10.

“The recognition of how we played against Florida and the comparisons of the two teams that were made by the (LSU) players who played really told them something,” Miles said. “I think it became a more urgent want to prepare, improve and be the team they are capable of being.”

Although LSU has only lost one game all season, there were few instances before the Auburn game in which the Tigers looked dominant.

LSU needed a late goal-line stand to escape Mississippi State with a win and a pair of late touchdowns to beat Georgia. The Tigers’ offense was thoroughly stifled by Florida, with the game remaining close only because of timely plays by LSU’s defense.

Even the defense was struggling in key areas, entering the Auburn game ranked last in the SEC in sacks with five. The unit nearly doubled that total against Auburn, sacking Chris Todd four times. One sack produced a turnover and LSU also had an interception.

“This defense seems to have a smile on its face when it goes out to play, and they are playing aggressive and downhill,” Miles said. “There is great effort. There is a sprit there that is allowing them to continue to get better.”

Southern Cal is a good team, not a great one, they were very lucky to beat Ohio State, they had all they could to beat Notre Dame, I keep telling everybody they have one, possibly 2 more losses in their conference before it's all over, they are slightly overrated. As far as the S.E.C., I believe Alabama or L.S.U. would take Florida in a rematch. I'm not sure Alabama will beat the Tigers!

Rick z., LSU beat USC in the 80's pretty handidly in the coliseum 23-3. USC did beat LSU in 1979 when USC was #1 and LSU was unranked but only escaped with a 17-12 win in the last minute of the game. As a matter of fact I believe LSU is like 15-2 against the PAC-10 in football. USC, UCLA, and some other PAC 10 teams have beaten SEC teams, sure,. But I am willing to bet that the overall win/loss record between the two conferences will favor the SEC.

Rick Z #158- Please don't blurt out such falcehoods that Pac-10 schools beat SEC teams everytime out!
Your lack of knowledge concerning college football is astouding and you embarrass the Pac-10. I am a
Pac-10 fan (USC). I think the SEC has the best college football conference this season! But, to my SEC
friends, the Pac-10 is not the worst, as some of you claim it to be!

The media always gives the crown to USC before every season. Thats all you ever hear is how great USC is and when they lose you start to hear the excuses. You put any Pac-10 team in the SEC and watch the beating they'll take. I would love to see USC take on Florida or Bama in the title game. They'll get it handed to them just like Florida and LSU has done the last few years. Just ask Ohio State.

Casie C - 163 - I think that his Great Granddaddy would have been OK if he had just left the pig a long. He could have hid in the woods and waited until the war was over. Instead he just had to make love to the Southern women's pig. When they caught him, he ratted out the other Yankee's hideout. By the way, I think the zister is a 12 year old girl. You know, I thought that she was a Pac 10 fan but now that you mention it, she has never really rooted for any conference.

Casie C - 121 - I got a feeling that the zister is a coward just like her Great Granddaddy. And to honest I don't think that she can read very well either. With all the stats that she has received stating figures that prove that over the years the SEC is better than the Pac10 and still not accept it.

zister - casie c and I have presented you with facts showing the SEC is better than the pac10. I will do a few more because you stated "win the games first, inbreds. Then you can talk trash." I really think that your top teams like USC can be beat by teams like Washington, oh yea, they did beat them.

Overall wins: SEC vs Pac 10
    SEC - 60
    Pac 10 38

    There were 7 ties.

Can I trash talk now - please can I?

rick z's great great granfather was a saddleboy for the north. he was out getting water for the real soldiers and was captured, he gave up his units location and they were all captured as well, his family has hated the south ever since because of his cowardly act.

rick z is just as cowardly as his forefather, he won't name his team, he only attacks the south and the sec then retreats because he can't win

Look forward to receiving your information. Please get your Mother's OK before accepting. As you know we rednecks down South really like 12 year old girls.

Rick Z. i'm not trying to be rude or anything but why do you care what's said on an sec forum if your a Pac-10 fan? I go to other forums and read the news and comments as well for other conferences but i don't take offense to what is said. Just let the "retards" have their moment in the sun. I have nothing against a Pac-10 fan believing their conference is the best and have no problem with fans of other conferences coming onto SEC forums and leaving comments as long as what they say is not meant to completely bash someone who did not deserve it just as i would like it if other SEC fans didn't go to other conference forums and bash their conference. 14 ...... way to completely miss my point. its COMMON SENSE you dumbass. people care about games in their region much more than they care about games across the country. SEC fans care about SEC games the most, Pac 10 fans care about Pac 10 games the most, Big 12 fans care about Big 12 games the most, Big 10 fans care about Big 10 games the most ..... and so on ..... COMMON SENSE. do you honestly believe the entire country sits on pins and needles waiting for big SEC match ups ?????? seriously kiddo ..... contrary to your extremely narrow minded belief, college football does not revolve around the SEC.

you also cant be serious that the SEC is the best conference in the country "top to bottom". Vanderbilt and South Carolina have NEVER IN THEIR HISTORY finished the season ranked in the top 10, Mississippi St has not finished a season in the top 10 since 1940, Mississippi has not finished a season in the top 10 since 1961, its been since 1977 for Kentucky and 1982 for Arkansas. where exactly does this "tough bottom" of the SEC come into play ???? thats a lovely OPINION you have .... too bad FACTS blow it to sh*t. the SEC is plain and simply a conference with 6 good teams and 6 garbage teams. for comparison purposes ..... every single team in the Pac 10 has finished in the top 10 in the past 17 seasons, and every single team in the Pac 10 has been Pac 10 Champions in the past 17 seasons. when is the last time Vanderbilt or South Carolina won the SEC ???? (crickets chirping).

it looks as if Southern Cal wins the most Outdoor track and field championships by an overwhelming number but Arkansas wins the most indoor track championships by an overwhelming number winning 12 straight and 16 out of 17 from 1984-2000 and the Big Ten looks to be the favorite in Cross Country

i would like to tweak my post a little bit. I cannot find records of past NCAA track and field championships so I am going to withdraw the statement of Arkansas having most however I did see that John McDonnell has the most national titles of any single coach as well as the most triple crowns with 5.

i noticed there was some discussion about track and of course the battle between pac-10 and sec. I realize that Arkansas didn't become a member of the SEC until the early 90's but i believe they have the most national titles in track(i could be wrong because i haven't necessarily researched it but they are definitely somewhere up there). They also had in my personal opinion the greatest track/cross country coach of all time in John McDonnell. I don't believe that any one conference is superior to another in any sport because every team has bad years therefore every conference has bad years. Sorry if i offended anyone or if my statement isn't quite true.
