LSU coach Miles accepts blame for costly miscues

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP)—Les Miles said the past two days have been difficult for him and his football team.

The LSU coach said he understands the criticism and accepts the blame for a series of gaffes that resulted in the 17th-ranked Tigers’ 25-23 loss at Ole Miss.

“For 48 hours, I’ve gone through the pain of this,” Miles said Monday. “It was not something I enjoyed. I understand the criticism from the fans. I’m critical of myself.”

A series of questionable play calls and suspect clock management short-circuited a possible Tigers rally against Ole Miss last Saturday. The game ended with the ball at the Rebels’ 5 and LSU not getting off a play.

“As part of the process, I evaluate everything we do—players and coaches,” Miles continued. “I’m part of that process. I’m no different than anybody in this team room. I mismanaged the back end of the Ole Miss game.

“I’m responsible. I’m the head coach.”

Trailing 25-17, LSU scored on a 25-yard pass from Jordan Jefferson to Rueben Randle with 1:17 remaining.

LSU’s 2-point conversion attempt failed, but the Tigers still had a chance to win when Brandon LaFell recovered an onside kick, then took a screen pass from Jefferson to the Rebels’ 32.

Rather than running the ball, the Tigers called pass plays. The results were an incompletion and a sack for a 9-yard loss. Miles defended those two play calls.

“The first pass was a deep ball,” Miles said. “It was a throwaway. The second pass was very quick. It was able to go against any coverage. There’s a sack. We have to do better than that. I defend the calls. Those calls came with my name on it.

“We can never back up when we’re first-and-ten at the 32. We are in position to win the game. The quarterback should know to travel smartly. He should have been given that (instruction) before the play. We didn’t give it to him.”

On the next play, a screen pass to Stevan Ridley lost seven yards. Ridley was tackled with 26 seconds remaining. It took 17 seconds for LSU to use its final timeout.

“My mistake was I went on to the next play,” Miles said. “I was reviewing quickly what needs to take place. It was fourth-and-26. I let the clock get away from me. That was my fault, my mistake.”

In the timeout, it was determined that Jefferson would throw deep into the end zone. Miles didn’t expect there to be time for another snap if the pass was completed on the field.

Jefferson completed the pass to Toliver, who was tackled at Ole Miss’ 5 with one second on the clock. Then there was utter confusion on the LSU sidelines. Jefferson took the snap and spiked the ball. Officially, the ball wasn’t snapped before the one second elapsed.

“It was a nine-second game,” Miles said. “It was not likely we would get two snaps. If we’d get a first down, for us to run down there and snap it is not a likely scenario. We need 12 seconds to get the personnel on the field for a field goal.

“The other option is to have a play called. It would be very difficult to get a play off in one second with the clock starting after the official walks away. The thought process was that we had to score on that play. We had no second play called prior to the Hail Mary.”

The signal-caller on the sidelines (graduate assistant John Dunn) told Jefferson to spike the ball.

“To try to get the ball snapped with one second was certainly our greatest desire,” Miles said. “There was a possibility of Ole Miss having 12 men on defense. That came down from the press box.

“That’s the reason the (spike) call came from the press box to the signal-caller. … Ole Miss made a substitution. There weren’t 12 men on the field. At that point in time, I had lost the opportunity for the team to win by squandering seconds.”

LSU (8-3, 4-3) closes out its regular season at home against Arkansas (7-4, 3-4) on Saturday, then will move on to an undetermined bowl game.

Since winning the national title two seasons ago, the Tigers have lost eight of 15 Southeastern Conference games. The eighth defeat was the most difficult one.

“I have an opportunity to represent a great school and a great state,” Miles said. “I understand the mistake the head coach made. That will not happen again. I have to get it right. It was my fault.

“I hold the players accountable and I’m accountable to the players. I spoke honestly to the players about my mistake. The strength of a team is a group of men committed to each other. We have a great group of men. This is a difficult time.”

Did anyone on this board actually watch the game....The second to last play lpost the game for the Tigers...Not calling a timeout after the running back failed to get out of bounds let nearly 20 seconds run off....The hail mary with 9 seconds left was the EXPECTED last play of the game and was supposed to be thrown into the endzone...However...the pass was short and surprisingly caught and was down with 1 second left while they move the chains....Officially the time ran out BEFORE the snap so it would not have mattered whether they had another play called or the FG team out there or whatever so spiking the ball at that point is a moot point.....They were in FG range and the QB has to know to just throw the ball away and under no circumstances TAKE a SACK...then try the FG...It should have been the simplest way to do it...Everybody says running plays...On a run play you have the center to QB handoff and the QB to RB handoff and a higher risk of fumble or losing yardage. A passing play has one ball exchange then throw the ball away and you lose NO yardage....If that receiver had dropped the pass either the clock would have run out or they would have gotten a do over from the previous spot.....
With all this being said.....I loved it....Hotty Toddy...Be Rebels...Beat State

    raiders1.

I agree, a QB should know that by rule every play must take at least one second off the clock no matter what. So you cannot spike the ball with one second left.

However, Miles' clock management towards the end of the game was dispicable, like waiting to call a timeout until 9 seconds left in the game........

to rick z....just a little info from an "inbred"...let's discuss claimed National Championships in College Football...
    SEC: 27...Alabama-9, Tennessee-6, Mississippi-3, LSU-3, Florida-3, Georgia-2, Auburn-1
    since 2003: 4 with 1 of those split (LSU=BCS)
    Pac 10: 9...USC-7, UCLA-1, Washington-1
    since 2003: 2 with 1 of those spilt (USC=AP)
so you can clearly see rick z that the Pac 10 is good, but not DOMINANT like the SEC
also Mr. Miles...WOW...great clock management, incredible play calling, still attempting to ride the coattails of Mr. Saban...hope that works out for you...so far so good, huh

Miles you are garbage! Yea you looked good at first with Saban's recruits, but since they're gone it shows your true coaching skills. I wish they would pay your 13.6 million buyout so you can head to WESTERN KENTUCKY where you belong.

LSU hasn't returned to a top program since the last National Championship. It goes to show how important an offensive or a defensive coordinator is to the game.

#207 your an idiot. Your moronic rant had ONE fact. I love though how you blame Hamas utah loss on andre smith. Florida handed saban his ass though without percy harvin. Florida can pass, run, and kick sir. Those teams Bama squeeked by was all lacking at least one of those. Florida is again going to send Bama to the sugar bowl to be heated badly by another WAC team. Either Boise or TCU!! Tumble tide, tumble!

Ole Miss was the better team that day...and was last year too. That's what hurts LSU so bad....they thought they had a better team. They DID not and DO not have a better team than Ole Miss.

Ole Miss outgained them by 155 total yards. Ole Miss had TWO touchdowns called back (once again terrible SEC officials) on horrible calls by the ref (see the replays!!). LSU scored one of their TDs on a blocked field goal. they have a bad offense now and have had a bad offense for two years.

They got out-gained, out-scored, out-coached, turned the ball over, made costly play calls. They GOT BEAT. OLE MISS is a better team for the 2nd straight year and is going to a better bowl game for the second straight year. Dexter McCluster for Heisman!!!

I would like to see TCU, Boise State, Cinn, etc play the schedule of any SEC team and see if they can go undefeated. In 2010 Boise State you play lets say the Miss State schedule and Miss State plays your schedule and see what happens or TCU play the LSU schedule and LSU plays TCU schedule. I think you find that you will have at least 4 loses. When Boise State beat OU that year in the bowl game that was one time and on any given day this is going to happen but if OU played you ten times they would beat you at least 8 times if not 9. I am not a LSU fan nor a Miles fan but which one of you out there has not made a mistake? Les is human and the last time I checked we humans make mistakes..........

Les Miles is simply NOT a Championship-Caliber Head Coach. He is not smart enough, period. His teams are not well-disciplined and do not perform at a consistent level. They consistently play down to the level of their opponents. If you can compete with Florida, you should stomp LA Tech. Furthermore, he constantly puts the team in a position where they must make spectacular plays to win the game. That they can regularly do so reveals the level of talent that is squandered under Miles. The Onside recovery, the 4th and 26th, etc. He has no grasp of the basic fundamentals of the game, nor the ability to remain poised under pressure. Clock Management is such a fundamental that to say, "I've learned; it won't happen again" is something that shouldn't be heard above the Junior High level. He is paid for a level of excellence he simply will never attain. Last, but not least, the way he threw his QB under the bus for this latest debacle ("He shouldn't have taken a sack"... No, Les, YOU should have RUN) probably cost him a few blue-chip recruits; who wants to play for a guy who makes you lose and then blames you?

Rick Z - You are one dumb sum@#$% !!! ROLL TIDE!!! Rick, you know what a near loss is? A WIN !!!Bama nearly lost to Tennessee,but,.......THEY DID'NT!!! Florida nearly lost to Arkansas, but they WON !! USC nearly lost to Oreg...,.....oh wait, they DID lose, embarrassingly in fact! Let's see they nearly lost to Stanf...,oh hell, they DID lose did'nt they? Oh here's one...They also nearly lost to Washing......,wait,....DAMN ! They LOST to them too!!! See, a near win is a LOSS,a blow-out loss is a LOSS,a "feel good-we played hard" loss is still a LOSS !!! A WIN is a WIN is a WIN......Almost everyone on here hates you.You use the same old stats on every blog. The 7-1 stat, the Utah/Alabama game......You seem to always forget about the 20-something football NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS won by the SEC ??? How could you forget or omit that fact? I know why....Because your balls have'nt dropped down into your sack yet.....you don't have the courage to come to grips with the facts...It'll be okay....When they drop down and your "peachfuzz" gets hard and wirey you should be able to see things for what they are.....You know, like a grown man should???You always use the example of UT losing to UCLA....Is UCLA a better team than UT? I doubt it.Is Washington a better team than USC? I REALLY doubt that! However there is that pesky little,"On any given Saturday"thing that can, and does sneak up and bite every team on the ass eventually! Last year Bama lost to Utah(without Andre Smith) after they lost a hard fought game to Florida for the right to play for the Nat'l title.....Perhaps they were banged up or bummed out and not ready mentally? Could Utah beat their asses like that on a regular basis? I doubt it....But....,they DID that day. How about you start finding more fun filled facts than one game against Bama,or USC hanging 70 on a really bad Arkansas team......When your balls drop that is.......

rick z forgets that an SEC team won the last three national championship games and five of the last ten. His memory is short and selective.

The only things that he can remember are a few games that work with his misguided theory and to call people in the south "inbred, illiterate and retards". Forgive his name calling as he is just projecting his own problems on others in an attempt to feel better about himself.
