Record, title, turmoil in Kansas vs. No. 3 Texas

  • Print

AUSTIN, Texas (AP)—When Colt McCoy started his first game at Texas in 2006, the second pass of his career was a sign of things to come: a 60-yard touchdown in a rout of North Texas.

He still calls it one of his fondest memories at Royal-Memorial Stadium.

On Saturday night, McCoy will trot onto the home-field turf for the last time with a chance to grab a record of a lifetime.

If the third-ranked Longhorns beat a Kansas team mired in a losing streak and a school investigation of coach Mark Mangino, McCoy will set the NCAA record for career victories by a starting quarterback with 43.

And he will get his first Big 12 South championship.

Over his four seasons as a starter, McCoy has built a resume that ranks among the best in college history in terms of wins, school records and name recognition—a Texas QB named Colt is pretty catchy.

McCoy credits some of that success to being in the right place at the right time.

“It’s rare for somebody to have the opportunity to play four years at a program that has the ability to win 10 or 11 games each year,” McCoy said. “This has been an awesome four years. We have a lot of goals still in front of us.”

What McCoy is missing is a championship. Texas hasn’t won a Big 12 or even a division title since the national championship season of 2005 when Vince Young was leading the Longhorns. A win over Kansas clinches a berth in the Big 12 title game at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington on Dec. 5.

If the Longhorns (10-0, 6-0 Big 12) remain undefeated, they’ll likely earn a shot at the Bowl Championship Series title game in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 7.

“It just feels good to get the program back in the direction of how it used to be when VY was here,” safety Earl Thomas said. “We’re just trying to get this win and see what happens after that.”

While Texas is aiming for records and titles, Kansas (5-5, 1-5) seems on the verge of imploding.

The Jayhawks have lost five in a row and the university confirmed this week that Mangino is being investigated on allegations of verbal and emotional abuse of his players. Mangino was the 2007 coach of the year.

Mangino defended himself Thursday night on his weekly radio program, saying there were “people who are embarrassing this program just for their 15 minutes of fame.” He also said some allegations are just wrong.

Mangino said he has not lost the support of his current players.

“I may have lost some people around here but it’s not players,” Mangino said.

Kansas senior quarterback Todd Reesing said Jayhawks players are trying to focus on the game, not the losing streak or the allegations about their coach.

“There’s no turmoil within the team. No one’s pointing fingers as anybody. All we can do is keep fighting,” Reesing said. “We’ve played hard for each other and you can never say anything against that.”

The trip to Austin was supposed to be a special one for Reesing, who grew up and played high school football in the area. He was one of the top high school players in Texas when he signed with Kansas.

He dreamed of playing for the Longhorns, but they didn’t offer a scholarship.

“All I want to do is spend the last (two weeks) that I have guaranteed as a football player at this university to be fun and to be enjoyed with my teammates and coaches,” Reesing said.

104 - Star Power - Good post - As I stated, Mac has never lost a game either in HS or college. I wish that they had left Ingram in a little longer in today's game. He played about 1 1/2 quarters.

One other QB that was similar to Mac - S Shealy - you guys remember what he did.

92 - MICK - Dude, thanks - don't know if I would have went out on a limb with Tony C. LOL

Wow, Just Wow. Not even a SEC blog and the haters are out. I don't care who wew play in the NC game. Just as long as we get there. As far as the SEC being better than the Big 12. I really don't think so. You guy honestly believe the Longhorns can't keep up with Florida or Bama? Bama is too 1 dimensial. Your QB has some things to learn yet. I also don't he is as mobile as he would need to be against the Texas defense. We always hear about the athletesisim from the SEC, I got news for you. Texas puts out more top recruits that Florida or Alabama. I'm not saying they don't have talent, they have plenty., but for someone to say Texas couldn't compete with either of those 2 is nuts. I think SEC fans believe in the media hype machine a little too much. I really don't think it would be a blow out either way in the NC game. All 3 teams are talented. I just love when TX doesn't score 50 points a game they think we are slipping, but when the SEC teams have a low scoring affair it's great defense. I mean really guys if you're gonna hate then at least give some facts.

    Hook 'em

Neither the Pac 10 nor the Big Ten showed up this year. The media is trying to make a controversy out of the fact that Texas will play Florida/Alabama for the National Championship while Boise State and TCU should be in the running. Yeh, and monkeys fly.

Wait till next year my friends from the south. After Penn State destroys the Helen Keller School for the Blind and rolls into Palookaville for a duel with nobody number two, we'll be set to take on any high school team in the land.

Seriously - if the Big Ten is serious about football, it needs to play the SEC, Big 12 and the Boise States/TCUs in their non-conference games. There is no happiness in whoville when you have a winning record against non-contenders.

ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzz, Allen (no offense), but do you have anything ORIGINAL to say? You are saying the same "stuff" the Pac-10 fans were saying in 2005. It did not work out for them. I had a USC fan put his finger in my face at the beginning of the game and he asked me if I knew I had wasted my money. He came up to me at the end of the game and apologized. Will you be man enough to do that? It's almost 8pm here and you are going to put me to sleep with boring comments like that and I have a lot of CFB to watch tonight!
By the way, I hate to differ with my other UT comrades, but Alabama is going to beat Florida in the SEC Championship Game......a close game won by a field goal.
    GO HORNS!!!!!!!!

hammer.......just a quick note for you. Two of the finest liners on these threads are Tony C. and michael h. Both guys are well versed in the game, and are good sports. Others who are good bloggers are Casie C, iamme23andsumchange, Angry Dad, Dawgmeat........(left some out, apologies....) They always state their opinions and usually can back them up with stats. They are straight forward and respectful. Leave off the mother, family, and animal remarks. You seem to be a person with something to offer, intelligently. Don't lower your status with name-calling. Blog responsibly. Boomer Sooner.

One thing before I go, in defense of our QB. Mac has not lost a game in either HS or college. He may not be a Colt but Colt has lose a game - right?

82 - Star Power - 83 - Allen - Guys, just a warning. I just questioned TX's schedule and got called a Troll. No telling what you guys will get called. Two good posts!

Allen, how is pearl doing? Don't see many posts from her anymore.

By the way, I looked up Troll:

    1. Member of a race of fearsome giant creatures from Norse mythology. I like that.

    2. Posts controversial , irrelevant, or off topic messages in an on-line community. I don't like this one but I have a feeling this was what the guy was calling me.

Stay safe my friends - I am going to pick up some Dreamland BBQ and watch the game.

    Hey starpower....
Utah sure hung with Bama last year, didn't they?
How did you deal with that embarrassment?
Three #1 Recruiting classes, and you guys couldn't beat Utah!
I'm going to wait until after the National Championship game, and then I'll remind you that you said all that stuff about Texas "not being able to hang with Bama."
Have you guys won a national championship since Stallings left?
I will never knock Stallings or Bear Bryant because they were winners. In fact, I generally like Saban.
However, for the last couple of years Alabama, Florida, and Texas have ALL had kick ass recruiting classes. AND TO SAY..we don't match up well is ridiculous.
    HOOK EM!!!

star power are these the same voters that had bama ahead of TEXAS last year we know how that worked out for bama. utah beat them cmon utah. sec is overated week offenses make them look like good defenses. as far as players your qb had to leave TEXAS to get to play qb he could not start for any big 12 team so he went to bama. TEXAS gets 15 of the top 30 of TEXAS star high school players every year. i know that is not fair to the other teams but they all want to go to TEXAS to play for the nc. i think bama does deserve to be in the top 5 though.

It really doesn't matter if Texas plays Bama or Florida for the NC, they will lose either way. The Longhorns, I don't think, have played asny defense even close to the caliber of the Tide or Gators. I think Texas is very good this year. But the SEC-style, smash-mouth defense will be the difference. Just my opinion...don't mean any disrespect.
