3 SEC Heisman hopefuls meet in Tide-Vols showdown

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP)—The odds are pretty good that Tennessee’s Eric Berry will go one-on-one with the leading Heisman Trophy candidate for the second time this season.

The Volunteers dynamic defensive back, who took on Florida’s Tim Tebow earlier this season, is bracing for another high-impact collision—this time with No. 1 Alabama’s 212-pound tailback Mark Ingram.

“I’ll probably just take a few Advil before the game,” Berry said.

Berry and Ingram will be two of three players taking the field on Saturday who are on the Heisman watch list. They will be joined by Crimson Tide All-America linebacker Rolando McClain.

The trio is among several names being bandied about for the award, the others being mostly quarterbacks: Tebow, Jimmy Clausen and Colt McCoy. The field might be wide-open enough this season for a dominant defensive star to earn serious consideration for the Heisman, which hasn’t gone to a defender since Michigan defensive back/return man Charles Woodson won in 1997.

Berry is the only one from Alabama or Tennessee being actively promoted for the award, with music videos and berry4heisman.com. While McClain and Ingram publicly downplay the hoopla, Berry embraces it.

“I feel like with the videos, it’s really helping Tennessee get onto that radar again,” said Berry, a junior who is just 14 yards shy of Terrell Buckley’s NCAA career record of 501 interception return yards. “Soon we’ll be getting right back on the right track and everybody’s going to know who Tennessee is.”

Berry has the hype and the flamboyant style. But he only has one interception this season after picking off 12 passes his first two, and he plays for a .500 team. Still, Tide coach Nick Saban called him “maybe the best defensive player in our conference” and an “absolutely phenomenal football player.”

McClain is a mobile, 258-pound inside linebacker who is the leader of the nation’s No. 1 defense. He has a team-high 49 tackles, two sacks, two interceptions and a forced fumble.

Does he enjoy seeing a fellow defender getting pushed for the Heisman? “I mean, I don’t really care,” McClain said, shaking his head and quickly ending that line of questioning.

Both might have to take a back seat to Ingram, who jumped to the top of some pundits’ Heisman watch lists this week with a 246-yard rushing effort against South Carolina. He also shares the team lead with 19 catches and his 30 runs of 10-plus yards leads the nation.

He’d certainly be on Berry’s list.

“Yeah, that’s hands down,” he said. “He’s one of the best backs in this country. He’s a complete back. He runs, blocks and he can catch out of the backfield, and he breaks a lot of tackles. You could just go back and look at his tape, his film—that’s his resume, and I feel like his resume is pretty darn good.

Ingram isn’t quite as dismissive of the Heisman question as McClain. But the sophomore insisted it’s not something he’s going to get carried away with.

“It’s an honor to be considered as one of the top candidates for that award, but I’m not too worried about it,” he said. “I’m really just worried about helping this team win and get better everyday as a player. You know, if we just keep winning and I keep performing, everything else will take care of itself.”

It worked for Woodson. He led the Wolverines to a share of the national championship with Nebraska, collecting eight interceptions while also playing some receiver and returning punts.

The Green Bay Packers veteran follows the Heisman chase, because past winners have a vote. He likes Florida’s middle linebacker Brandon Spikes— though he knows Spikes was injured last weekend (groin)—but says “the numbers factor, that’s pretty overwhelming.”

Is it time for another defender to win the Heisman?

“I don’t see why not. But the guys, they’re just not going to get the (publicity),” Woodson said. “I tell people all the time, I was very fortunate to play offense and get some of that notoriety. It’s going to be hard for a guy that only plays defense to have any numbers that’s going to rival an offensive player. So that’s just a tough deal.”

Besides Berry and McClain, another potentially Heisman-worthy defensive player is Nebraska tackle Ndamukung Suh, who has racked up across-the-board stats including nine tackles for loss, three sacks, seven pass breakups, a forced fumble and an interception.

“You have to be a dominating factor in probably every game,” said former Auburn defensive tackle Tracy Rocker, the first SEC player to capture both the Outland Trophy and Lombardi Award. “(Suh) is doing probably everything possible you can do.”

The Auburn assistant had 100 tackles in 1988, but didn’t get any Heisman votes.

Suh isn’t counting his votes.

“It’s more an offensive predicated award,” he said. “It’s all good and gravy now, but I have to keep playing and stay focused on this team and helping this team win. If the time comes and I’m still in the race, I’m more than happy to have my name up there.”

Saban says stats are key, and that someone who is racking up sacks or interceptions or returning punts and/or kicks would have a shot. But the odds are definitely in favor of offensive players.

“There’s a lot of different awards for a lot of different players,” he said. “I think that offensive players because of fan interest and crowd appeal, probably … have a little bit of an advantage.”

star power: i like the thinking. those old offenses would confuse the defense and get lots of playmakers around the ball and in the game at once, plus, most of them are pretty basic to install and therfore wouldn't confuse your offensive players! mix it up with wildcat, wing t, single wing, and also throw in your basic pro set along with some shotgun with 4 receiver sets, man, a defense would be out to lunch.

If anyone needs any more evidence that the Heisman is a purely political award, they need only consier that Colt McCoy is still in the discussion.

Janzen Jackson the true freshman will more than likely have the assignment to cover Julio Jones which could help Alabama, however the coaches have nothing but praise for Jackson and think he will develop every bit as good as Berry.

One thing that has been said by the VOL’s coaches is Alabama is the type of program they want to be and no high compliment can be said in college football.

I think this game will renew the great rivalry and both teams will be a major force in the SEC for several years, the good thing about this rivalry it is based on respect from both teams.

This game like many games they have play against each other will be very physical.

robert: i agree, i like berry, and he is amazing. as i said, tennessee is best served by moving him around, using him to stop the opponent(this week Bama's run game)) strenghts! plus, Bama and jones, haven't showed they can beat you throwing the ball. i hope the Tide put in a few wrinkes in the offense this week to keep the tennessee defense and berry off balance!

    ROLL TIDE!!

Monte will continue to move him around and match him against the strength of the offence, this week he will move up to cover the best running back tandem in college. I had given make believed awards out earlier and here is what I posted on Berry.

I will start with an award I will call the most Unselfish Award, as everyone in the nation knows Eric Berry needs 15 interception yards to set the NCAA record and is a Heisman Trophy candidate. At the beginning of the season every game fans expected the record to fall but is still intact. Berry Unselfishly accepted a new role on defense which limited his chances for an interception and his Heisman Trophy chances; he did this to give the VOL’s the best chance to win games. It is not often you see this and he may not win the Heisman but has won the hearts of many fans and coaches across the nation.

Let's not call the Heisman "the best player in college " because like the mythical National Champion it really does not fill its definition when the highest percentage of winners are qbs running backs so lets dispense with the hype and not add to the hype by buying into it let create the fans best player trophy and let the fans decide who they think is the most deserving

robert: do you think monty kiffen will continue to move berry around, and use him as a "hybrid" type player, or do you think they will man him up more on julio jones than they have been doing vs other teams? i think they will continue to move him , because using him to cover one man on a regular basis takes him out of a lot of plays!

robert: i agree about the line as well. Alabama has a good, not great 0-line, but their d-line is very good. tennessee's 0-line is very under-sized and could be a factor!

Just to let you know I broke down the Offensive lines also but have trouble posting for some reason, but to let you know the Tide has a dramatic Edge in that department. The VOL’s have had the same line all year long because of injuries.

Crompton was 11 for 19 with two sacks and one interception and the running game was having some success. Tebow was 14 of 19 with three sacks and one interception but he ran for 76 yards and a TD. So it appears both teams had trouble passing.

On watching the game you are correct because I am currently overseas and had to hear it via the net because Armed Forces Network was out that night, however I got to see the fourth quarter the next day.

And this game will be on at 2 in the morning so will only get to watch the second half before work.

i would hate to predict this one. its a mush bigger rivalry than many people realize, and is usually very hard fought. if Alabama shoes up focused, executes the game plan and plays to their capability in all three phases, they should win by 20 points. but, if Bama plays the way they have the last couple weeks, and tennessee plays like they did against georgia, it could be very close. my instinct is to say Bama wins in 20-7 or 24-10 type game, but who knows, it could be 30-7 Bama, or 16-14 tennessee.
i hope its one of the former, not the latter!

robert: not a bad assesment! i do think Alabama's recievers and tight ends are a little better than advertised, and the offensive coordinator(mcelwain), and the QB mcelroy, have to do a better job getting them the ball. Alabama's special teams are very good, their fg kicker(tiffen) is solid, their punter(fitzgerald) is very solid, and javier arenas is the best kickoff/punt returner in the nation! that could be huge in this game!

Alabama are 7-0 and the VOL’s are 3-3 (Part 1A)

Win/Lose: Alabama wins in a very close game, the VOL’s can win if they stop the Alabama running game and put pressure on Alabama’s quarterback McElroy. The VOL’s offensive line will have to stop the Alabama’s pass rush and open holes for the running backs. So far this year no team has been able to run against Alabama’s defense so this will be a huge test for the VOL’s offensive line and running backs.

Reason: I broke down key positions/areas:

QB’s are even both have shown inconstancy in the passing game and both have shown lack of mobility, whichever one can pass accuracy in this game will be able to control the game and give their team the edge. (Even)

Running Backs: the Alabama backs of Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson have been unstoppable this year so far but so have the VOL’s tandem of Hardesty and Brown. Which ever team’s offensive line can open holes for the running backs will have the edge. Because of types of teams played so far by both teams this is even starting the game. (Even)

Wide Receivers: The VOL’s show that their receivers can run after the catch against Georgia, but in prior games dropped many passes that could have lead to scores and wins if the VOL receivers catch the ball the VOL’s have the edge. Alabama receivers dropped passes like the VOLs and not as good after the catch as the VOL’s but are dangerous if left uncovered and Alabama’s quarterback McElroy has time to throw. (Edge VOL’s)

Both Defensive’s: Other than the Offensive lines having a major impact on this game both defenses will determine the final outcome, Alabama’s front line is outstanding and has only allowed a average of 65.4 yards rushing per game which takes a lot of pressure off the Linebackers and Defensive backs which has only allowed a average of 163.3 yards passing per game. The VOL’s have had injuries at key positions and the replacements have played outstanding however are stronger than Alabama against the Pass only allowing a average of 161.8 yards passing per game, but allow a average of 110.2 yards rushing per game and Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson are much better backs than what the VOLs have faced so far this year. Both teams have only given up 7 touchdowns this year. (Edge Alabama)

Special teams: Facts are the VOL’s have a major problem on Special teams where as Alabama’s Special teams are outstanding. (Dramatic edge Alabama)

    Robert H.,
I am thrilled that you somewhat applauded Tebow as not only a player but a leader. It’s always sweet to have another team making a comment on a UF player. Why does it matter if he goes to the NFL? From that point of view, you are saying that if a college player does not play in the NFL then he is no good!!!! Nice rational!!! Give me a break. To be honest with you I am sure all Gator fans will wish Tebow well when/if he goes to the NFL, but when he is gone we move to the next QB. Like I really don’t care where Eric Berry goes when/if he does go to the NFL. I hope he makes it, but I won’t get up on Sunday to watch Tebow, Berry, Ingram, McCoy, or Bradford play. And as far as UF beating UT because of Tebow......I don't think you watched the game. Our defense completely dominated UT and had Crompton running scared. Although Tebow plays a factor in EVERY game, your coach couldn’t even run a passing play because of our defense. In other words he ‘LAID’ down like a kitten (substituting kitten for a not so nice word). Kiffin is being nice to Bama because he knows he is going to get waxed again!! Plus, I am not sure if kiffin realy knows what he is saying anyways. All I know is he has you and your fans drinking posion. Again, we UF fans do appreciate your kind words for Tebow!! Keep them coming.
