Ole Miss, Cal, UNC back in AP Top 25

NEW YORK (AP)—Mississippi, California and North Carolina, teams that started the season with lofty expectations before stumbling, have surged back into the AP Top 25 college football poll.

There was little change, however, at the top of The Associated Press rankings Sunday after a weekend when most of the highly ranked teams had easy victories or time off.

No. 1 Florida was followed by fellow unbeatens Alabama, Texas, TCU, Cincinnati and Boise State. Also holding their places were No. 7 Georgia Tech, No. 8 Pittsburgh and No. 9 Ohio State.

The Gators received 36 first-place votes, Alabama had 13 and Texas 11.

The only change in the top 10 came at No. 10. Oregon moved up a spot after LSU slipped seven places to No. 17 following a 25-23 loss at Ole Miss.

The top seven in the BCS standings released Sunday were the same as the AP Top 25.

The Rebels (8-3) started the season ranked in the top 10, touted as a threat to Alabama in the Southeastern Conference’s West Division. Ole Miss reached as high as No. 4 in September before stumbling all the way out of the rankings with three losses.

But the Rebels extended their winning streak to three games by edging LSU in a wild finish and they moved back into the media rankings at No. 20.

Cal was also a top-10 team in September, considered a Pac-10 title contender. Consecutive blowout losses to Oregon and Southern California sent the Golden Bears tumbling, but they have won five of six since, including Saturday’s 34-28 victory at archrival Stanford.

Cal was No. 21 in the latest poll.

North Carolina was expected to challenge Virginia Tech in the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Coastal Division and was ranked in the first four polls this season. The Tar Heels reached as high as No. 19, but they lost their first three ACC games and fell out of the rankings.

North Carolina moved back into the Top 25 at No. 23 after winning its fourth straight game, 31-13 at Boston College. UNC’s reappearance in the poll gives the ACC five ranked team, the most of any conference.

Dropping out of the rankings after losses this week were Stanford, Wisconsin and Rutgers.

Oklahoma State was No. 11, followed by Penn State, Iowa, Virginia Tech and Clemson.

Oregon State moved up four spot to No. 16. The Beavers and Ducks meet in the Civil War rivalry on Thursday, Dec. 3, to decide the Pac-10 title and Rose Bowl berth.

The last time Oregon and Oregon State played with such high rankings was 2000, when the No. 5 Ducks lost to No. 8 Oregon State.

No. 17 LSU, along with BYU, Miami and Ole Miss round out the top 20.

Joining Cal and North Carolina in the last five are No. 22 Utah, No. 24 Southern California, which slipped two spots during an off week, and No. 25 Houston.

The Pacifist 10 couldn't even place a top tier team in the SEC this year. The mighty Trojans are a laughing stock...The SEC year end and year out are by far the best conference.

And I'll acquiesce to the fact that I wouldn't want Cal to play you guys, again. SC would be ranked higher, if they hadn't been playing in the Pac-10, but rather were playing in the SEC. Most of the Pac-10 teams, playing against each other, have worn each other down and, at the same, shown just how good all of them are, this year.

If the SEC and Pac-10 were in the same conference, this year, you'd see a whole lot of southeast teams at the bottom of the Pac. Same would be true of any other conference lined up against the Pac-10, this year.

Left to writer's speculation, a money machine is covering up how the rankings should really look. Even the yahoo voter's pool is left to being a popularity contest - how many cycles can you spend voting for your favorite teams and energy do you want to spend doing so. There is only one way to settle it - set up a short term playoffs. It would take an act of Congress to make it happen. The BCS's contract with ESPN would be irrelevant to new laws, as enforced.

Marxman - interesting stats. But, your percentages are based on distribution of teams, not rankings within.

The top ten are almost always south and east coast-biased. That's the real issue. You are giving percent distribution of conference presence in the BCS rankings - an opinion-based poll. There's a lot more to the story than writer's opinions. The top teams really should be settled on the field.

anyways, according to the current BCS rankings, this is how the "Big Six" stack up:

ACC - Clemson, Georgia Tech, Miami, North Carolina, Virginia Tech (42% of conference ranked)

PAC 10* - California, Oregon, Oregon State, USC (40%)..

SEC** - Florida, Alabama, LSU, Mississippi (33%)

BIG 10 - Iowa, Ohio State, Penn State (27%)

BIG EAST - Cincinnati, Pittsburgh (25%)

    BIG 12 - Texas, Oklahoma State (16%)...

*PAC 10 was at 50% (Stanford was dropped)

**SEC was at 25% (Mississippi was added)

    ...and another side note...

MWC - BYU, Utah, TCU (33%)... this conference should have an automatic bid..

    Interesting proposition.

When we are done with that, let's post production at the next level of the new players of late whose teams were incorrectly ranked in this flawed system.

Please be sure to leave the proper place at the table for folks like: Aaron Rodgers (uggh Texas what political finesse, that year), DeSean Jackson, Marshawn Lynch, Carson Palmer, Mark Sanchez, Reggie Bush, and list goes on, even for the O-line and D-line - sportswriters are obsessed with calling out SEC's near impenetrable defenses. There is something really, really wrong with the popularity contest taking place, right now.

want rational perspective ???? ... go to nfl page and look at games played today...notice there are no 1-20 numbers listed next to teams , that are a gift from the sports media bias in the ncaa... the nfl teams actually have to get it done on the field....these are a popularity contest is all, fuled all to often by weak schedules and 'name'....its a joke

wow, are you guys serious. " The SEC is weak". You guys are smoking crack. Here is my gripe. Stanford- why are they not ranked yet. These voters dont watch football I guess.
Arkansas at 7-4 not recieving any AP votes, if three plays are differnt they are easily 9-2
if the official crew is different at the Florida Game, Florida has a loss.
You WAC 10 guys always down the SEC then one of our teams goes on to win the National title. This is because we have in most years 6-8 teams that can challenge if not beat 97% of the other teams in the land. WAC10 and BiG 10 are always complaining. The Big 12 and SEC are the Top conf. in the land.OK when Ohio State gets in the BCS what happens an SEC team beats them.

Big 10- OState, Penn State, Iowa, Wisc

Pac 10- Oregon USC Stanford Arizona OSU

Big 12 Texas, OSU, Nebraska, Kansas TTech, OKLAHOMA- If OK-u were in the Big 10 they would probably be in the rose bowl, same goes for LSU

SEC- where the best athletes play- Alabama-Florida-LSU-ARK-OLE MISS-GEORGIA-AUBURN-USC-MISS STATE PUT ARK in the Big 12 and give them second place.
