Alabama No. 1 in final AP poll for 7th time

  • Print

PASADENA, Calif. (AP)—It’s unanimous. Alabama is back on top in college football.

The Crimson Tide was voted No. 1 in The Associated Press poll early Friday to earn its seventh AP title after beating Texas 37-21 in the BCS championship game.

Only Notre Dame has more AP national championships, with eight. Oklahoma also has seven.

The Crimson Tide (14-0) hadn’t finished No. 1 since 1992, but in just three seasons under coach Nick Saban, the South’s most storied program has returned to greatness.

“Third year and we’re already national champions?” Alabama nose guard Terrence Cody said. “That’s hard to believe.”

Texas (13-1) is No. 2 in the Top 25 and Florida (13-1), last season’s champion, was third.

The only other unbeaten team in the nation, Boise State (14-0), wound up fourth. It was the Broncos’ best finish in the AP poll. Back in 2006, the last time Boise State busted the BCS and went undefeated, the Broncos ended up fifth in the final rankings.

Only four points separated Florida and Boise State.

The USA Today coaches’ poll had the same top five as the AP, but the gap between No. 3 Florida and No. 4 Boise State was 11 points.

The Tide is the fourth straight Southeastern Conference team to win the national title. No league had ever captured three straight before last season. Alabama is the first unanimous No. 1 in the final Top 25 since Texas in 2005.

Ohio State finished fifth followed by TCU, Iowa, Cincinnati, Penn State and Virginia Tech, giving the Big Ten three top 10 teams, the most of any league.

Poor postseason showings in recent years have hurt the Big Ten’s reputation nationally, but this season Ohio State and Iowa won BCS games as underdogs and Penn State beat LSU in the Capital One Bowl.

Pac-10 champion Oregon starts the second 10, followed by BYU, ACC champion Georgia Tech, Nebraska and Pittsburgh.

For the Cornhuskers, it’s the best final ranking since 2001, when they finished eighth.

No. 15 Pittsburgh, along with Wisconsin, Utah, LSU, Miami and Mississippi complete the top 20. The Hurricanes hadn’t finished a season ranked this high since they were No. 17 after the 2005 season.

The final five were Texas Tech, Southern California, Central Michigan, Clemson and West Virginia.

USC’s victory in the Emerald Bowl against Boston College helped the Trojans avoid ending a season unranked for the first time since 2001, coach Pete Carroll’s first year.

Alabama won five AP championships under Bear Bryant, three in the 1960s and back-to-back titles in 1978 and ’79.

After Bryant retired in 1982, Alabama couldn’t keep up with the high standards he set. Gene Stallings, one of Bear’s Boys, came the closest, winning a national title in 1992.

But in the late 1990s and earlier this decade there were some lean—and at times embarrassingly bad—seasons for Alabama.

The Tide lured Saban away from the NFL after the 2006 season. He had ‘Bama back in the national title hunt last season and completed the journey this season.

“I’ll tell you what I told the team,” Saban said, “that I’ve never been prouder of a group of guys for their resiliency, their buy-in, their hard work, the blood, sweat and tears that they put in to accomplish what they accomplished this season.”

Iowa's defense looked like a pro team's defense. They closed down that high powered triple option attack of Georgia Tech. Jimmy Johnson said Iowa had never faced such an attack in the big 10 and would GT would easily win. I'd love to hear what he had to say after the Hawkeyes shut them down. If Iowa's offense improves and it will as the new backs now have a full season to learn, they might mow down a lot of the other teams as well. Ohio State has to play in Iowa City this fall, and that will be interesting!
Ohio State fans thought Iowa would be a push over without their #1 QB but the back up proved he could play and if Iowa had gone for a field goal in overtime and not a running play, they might have won. They were fun to watch this year and most of the team returns in 2010. Go Hawks!!

Bama...legends in their own mind. They can only legitimately claim 6 national championships...and 4 of those were split decisions in the polls. Clearly some people feel better advocating a lot of bull that most of the country knows is bull anyway, so let them puff away...apparently it makes them feel "superior" ;-)

BAMA, enjoy your win. You are the best team I saw all year. You beat more of the great teams than anyone else. As to the what-if with Texas and Boise State.

From what I saw, when Bama settled in, they would have found a way to beat Texas even with McCoy. Bama just has too much talent in too many areas. Texas found out why it is called a team sport.

As to Boise State, what a great team too. But they were never challenged except by TCU. Would like to have seen them play Bama, but in the end it seems to me the ranking system worked well enough this year. There is no perfect system that would make everyone happy.

The SEC is obviously the best Conference of the BCS schools; the SEC as a conference has won 6 of the 12 BCS titles. Congratulations goes out to the Univerisity of Alabama Crimson Tide - for capture their 13th National Title.

Speaking of Boise State, the last time they faced an SEC School, they got blown off the field UGA beat Boise State - 48 - 13.

I think we can all agree that Big 12 and Big 10 belongs with Mountain West and WAC and should rename the Big 6 to Big 4. Sounds like a good idea? Click thumbs up if you agree and thumbs donw if you disagree. Look.... it's obvious that these two conferences have very good teams but just not good enough to be crowned BCS Champs. Time and time again, the BCS system have given Big 12 and Big 10 ample opportunities to win a BCS title and yet have failed miserably. Those conferences are making the SEC look that much better than what it really is!!!!!!!!!!! I would have loved seeing last season's USC Trojans with Brian Cushing and Clay Matthews and soon to be a top 5 pick in Taylor Mays go up against Florida Gators of last season. I would have loved seeing Boise State beat the crap out of Alabama like what Utah did last season but we are living in a world where there is definitely an East Coast Bias. Anyway, I am not here to claim that West Coast teams deserve more respect. I am here to congratulate Alabama Crimson Tide and their fans for finishing the season as the best team and enjoy it until next season. It has been fun reading many posts from other yahoo memebers all season long and am looking forward to doing the same next season. USC fans took a lot of shots this year from rival teams, especially from Stanford and understandable since Stanford have been on the other end against USC for so long....and also from fans who never fails to brag, " SEC fans know more football than any fans in the country and the rest of you are just a bunch of idiots". And I must say, probably more than USC fans can handle. However, there is always next season, and personally, I can't wait to return the favor next year because USC will be in it next year. I hope.

First, congrats Tide nation. That last touchdown was classless however...totally unnecessary with a minute and a half left in a 10 point game.
Second, quit bashing Boise St. So they play in a weaker conference...they regularly beat supposedly "better" out of conference teams (Oregon, TCU, Oklahoma, etc.). The win/loss columns don't lie; BSU has put together one of the highest win/loss ratio's of the decade and that deserves some respect.
Finally, the whole polling thing is rediculous. How does a team lose and not go down in the polls? Cinci & TCU were exposed as frauds and somehow ranked above better Big 10 teams. It's a joke on all of us fans.

Congratulations to all the teams out there! I'm just glad I live in Boise where I can take my 9 year old to watch championship football. Best bang for the buck football in the country. I can park for free within a 10 minute walk from the stadium, get a pair of decent tickets for $30, and watch a great, entertaining game, with some amazing and fun fans. Then when it's over, be home in 30 minutes from when I leave my stadium seat. My car will be where I parked it, completely intact, and I don't have to worry about getting mugged on the way to it.

Let's also compare BSU's football budget to any of your favorite teams. In the last ten years since we went to Division 1A, we have more wins than any other team period. I'd say that the dollars spent per win is considerably lower here than anywhere. We also graduate more of our players (with more than a cobunicashuns degree) who go on to become productive, and valued members of society than any of your 'Power house' teams.

So, any day of the week, I'll take our fun, educated, winning team, and a #4 ranking with 14-0 record here, over any of your overpriced, overhyped, overpressured teams.

Garyb - You moron - are you still trying to stick Utah in the discussions. This is 2009. Guess what, Bama went 14-0 and beat the numbers #1, #2, #5 and #7 teams this year in the process. We played and defeated 11 bowl teams, had the Heisman winner, had 6 first team All Americans (Record), are now tied with ND for the most National Champioships, I could go on and on but hopefully you get where I am going with this.

Nicole - It doesn't matter if I am white, black or green. You were the first to down grade the South in your post. My response to you was "Love it or leave it." If you don't feel safe in the South, it ain't because you are black. Not sure what "My Kind" is unless you are referring to being a minority. For someone who claims to own a Masters in Law, you don't come across as being very smart. By the way, I have earned a Masters in Business and never heard of a Masters in Law. New form of Degree? You will get more respect if you show a little respect. Your post came across with a lot of hatred.

good time charlie - Yea but at least we are CHAMPIONS. Ain't that the name of the game.

Gary b - TCU could stay with BAMA? You need to stop licking those frogs - they will cause brain damage. By the way, what was that Boise - TCU score? What people of your ilk will learn is that the SEC plays a different brand of football than the Big 12. They was proven in this year's bowl games.

Agreed @ Andrew D....At the same time we had a hurt Quarterback too with 2 cracked ribs which hindered his play and the play calling greatly. Especially after we go up by 18 points. I'm not saying that he is a Colt McCoy but to say that there was not an effect is an injustice. The reason that it looks like Alabama is soooo awful is the love that everyone has for scoring 40 points before halftime. Alabama has never been that kind of team.
They play ball control.. no turnovers and then play defense hoping that the defense makes big plays setting up the ball control offense on the opponents end of the field..Does that sound a little like last night?

ok..i will play the stupid "what if" game! IF Colt had been there...Texas MIGHT have won, but, IF we had Ingram in for the majority of the 2nd half, we would have scored 3 more TD's! You couldn't stop any of our backs...(2 100+ yards for each of them)! So we would have beaten you guys worse.

    RTR!!!!

You just got ran over by a freight train!!!! DEAL WITH IT!!!!
