No. 15 Clemson turns focus to Gamecocks

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP)—The Atlantic Coast Conference championship game can wait for Clemson.

It’s South Carolina week, and that’s too important for the 15th-ranked Tigers to overlook.

“For us, it’s just the next game, next goal,” coach Dabo Swinney said Tuesday.

The Tigers (8-3) have a done a good job so far in sticking to Swinney’s philosophy.

They’ve been locked onto the five team goals permanently put on the wall of Clemson’s main meeting room. The Tigers have already checked off the first two this season—“Win The Opener” and “Win The Atlantic Division”—and now they’re ready to move on to No. 3, “Win The State Championship.”

Still, wouldn’t it be easy for the Tigers to brush aside the nonconference rivalry with the Gamecocks (6-5) and let their minds wander to the ACC championship game in Tampa, Fla., against Georgia Tech on Dec. 5?

No, Clemson star C.J. Spiller said: “It’d mess up one of our team goals and that’s winning this game.”

The Tigers have done that quite well since the two schools about 150 miles apart first kicked it off in 1896. Clemson holds the overall edge, 65-37-4. The Tigers have been particularly dominant the past three decades or so, winning 24 of 33 since 1976.

Clemson’s won the past two, six of the last seven and 10 of 12.

Lou Holtz, South Carolina’s coach from 1999-2004, was 1-5 against Clemson. With Steve Spurrier as coach, the Gamecocks have won once in four tries.

Even if Clemson wanted to sneak a peak at the Yellow Jackets, the Tigers’ fans wouldn’t let them.

Just look at last Sunday. Less than 24 hours after Clemson wrapped up the ACC’s Atlantic and won its sixth straight game, 34-21, over Virginia, Tigers fans were reminding Swinney just how important it is to beat those Gamecocks.

“We quickly turned the page,” Swinney said.

Tigers quarterback Kyle Parker heard from some around campus that they didn’t care if Clemson won the ACC title game as long as it kept its winning ways against South Carolina.

“That just shows you how much they care,” said Parker, a freshman from Jacksonville, Fla.

A year ago, Clemson’s 31-14 victory over South Carolina helped Swinney go from interim coach to the permanent job. Former Clemson coach Tommy Bowden was 7-2 against the Gamecocks, a mark that helped him keep his job despite the fact he never won a conference title.

Swinney hasn’t changed preparation or increased emphasis this week. It’s just another game, albeit one that gives Tigers or Gamecocks fans the chance to stand a little taller the rest of the year.

“Of course, we want to go out there and win the game,” Spiller said. “That’s why we’re going to prepare the best way we can this week.”

It’s the way they’ve gone about things all year and particularly during the winning streak when questions mounted about when—not if—the Tigers would lose focus they had worked so hard to keep.

“South Carolina that’s the one game out of year we look forward to,” receiver Jacoby Ford said. “We know they’re going to be fired up to play us and we definitely know that we’re going to be fired up to play those guys.”

Spiller immediately shot down the chance he might rest his sore turf toe Saturday to be healthier for Georgia Tech. “It’s the last regular season game,” he said. “There’s no need for rest.”

Right now for Clemson, its all about the Gamecocks.

“Nobody cares about next week or last week or whatever,” Swinney said. “It’s about four quarters on Saturday when you play your rival.”

Last I checked the ACC has more teams in the top 25 then the SEC does.

Really outside of Alabama and Florida the SEC is nothing this year. That's not just a Clemson fans point of view either. If you read most of the editors and media from arround the country they all agree on this point. I'm not saying the SEC is not a great confrence, only a moron would say that. However what I will say is it is NOT some beast of a conference this year. You have 2 great teams, and the rest are mediocre.

Your guys will be beat up, and they will be even more beat up after Clemson comes to town. When the next 10 out of 12 games@#$% fans then run your mouth!

Hey CDK....First of all "the ACC is a joke"

The ACC has 2-2 record vs the untouchable SEC this regular season so far.

looking back at the 2008 regular season the ACC was 6-4 vs the SEC.

The ACC is fully expecting ...at least ...2 wins vs the SEC this weekend.

Maybe the 14 TD drive (6 plays as I recall) vs NC State has you feeling over confident this weekend but, reality comes calling at noon on saturday.

Care to check the Gamecock record vs the ACC since the boys from columbia left the league in 1971....I didn't think that you would want to.

I'm sick of watching the SEC teams lineup and play patsy to Alabama when the only time all year long that a team truly traded blows with Bama for the entire game was a third place in their division Virginia Tech.

I get so tired of hearing carolina fans say the ACC is a joke and that is why Clemson wins easily, but they play in the toughest, biggest conference, the SEC, and that is why they can't win. I will be the first to admit the SEC is the best there is and the ACC has been mostly awful for more than a handful of years [no newsflash there for any college football fan]. But I have NEVER heard another SEC team bemoan the fact that their conference is the reason they can't win... because it is too tough and the "boys" are too big.

Usually playing the top, toughest teams game in and game out makes a team better in itself. But not carolina. Sure, they get lucky sometimes and even deserve it sometimes-- times when I am the first to "text all my" carolina buddies and say, "way to go!" But most [and I say most] carolina fans are so typical [as the above post indicates]... "texting all" their Clemson buddies to "brag"... loud mouths always yelling about winning the SEC and the national title after one victory.

And if carolina does win this year against Clemson, "sigh," congrats and way to go. Obviously it won't be a big deal to you or other carolina fans since they are in the ACC and, by association, a joke.

Every decade or so, carolina deserves to win and does win this game. It keeps it interesting. And joke as it may be, I'll take the 2/3 of all wins since the beginning of the rivalry and classiness any day. Good luck on Saturday and enjoy sleeping in! :)

I'm just going to sleep through this game considering it's at 12 p.m. I remember last year watching the game and Smelly threw interception after interception, it was just to hard to watch. When I wake up and if Clemson won, sigh, I guess they have bragging rights for the next 365 days. If Carolina wins, the first thing I'm doing is texting all my Clemson buddies to brag and then restart the game and watch the whole thing.

Clemson (8-3 overall) (2-2 on the road) - South Carolina (6-5 overall) (4-1 at home) . Here's the thing Clemson may be in the conference title game, ranked 15 in the nation, and won six straight, but the ACC is a joke. We're 6-5, we played three top five teams this year, beating one (at home). Clemson fans can say I'm making excuses all they want, but the fact is, we're banged up before we play Clemson. Even with the week off, we're sore. The SEC boys are some big boys, but if we lose Saturday apparently Clemson came ready to play and clearly was the better team.

Defense game, but we're at home and Clemson isn't so good on the road:

    Clemson 10 - South Carolina 17 Final
