Beavers, Ducks try to balance holiday and hype

  • Print

EUGENE, Ore. (AP)—Oregon and Oregon State are trying to keep preparation for the Civil War completely normal, even though the game itself is anything but ordinary.

The No. 10 Ducks will host the No. 16 Beavers next Thursday, with the winner earning the Pac-10 title and a trip to the Rose Bowl. The long-standing rivalry has never before solely determined the conference’s representative in Pasadena.

The Ducks (9-2, 7-1) have not played in a Rose Bowl since 1995, when they lost to Penn State 38-20. Oregon State (8-3, 6-2) last played in the game in 1965, losing 34-7 to Michigan.

The anticipation for the 113th edition of the Civil War is palpable across the state.

Attorney General John Kroger issued a release warning citizens about counterfeit tickets, while one fan put a pair of authentic Autzen Stadium seats on Craigslist.com for $1,000. A couple of Oregon State fans paid to have Portland’s Morrison Bridge lit by orange lights.

Oregon State coach Mike Riley and Oregon coach Chip Kelly were giving their teams a bit of a break, similar to a bye week. Both teams got Thanksgiving off and will return to practice on Saturday.

In other words, business as usual—or as usual as possible.

“We always say during a regular week that we win the game on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. We have to stick with that recipe,” Riley said. “We can’t jump ahead in any of that stuff.”

Kelly said the game was as big as any other—and they’re all big.

“Every game is the Super Bowl for us,” he said. “If we didn’t treat it that way we wouldn’t be where we are.”

The winner next Thursday will face Ohio State in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day.

While they may pale in comparison to this season’s game, the past two Civil Wars have been also been emotionally charged.

In 2007, the Beavers snapped a decade-long winning streak for the home team with a 38-31 victory over the No. 18 Ducks. James Rodgers scored the winning touchdown on a fly sweep.

A year later, the Beavers were headed to the Rose Bowl with a victory, but the Ducks came up the road to Reser Stadium and romped to a 65-38 win.

Riley said part of the challenge this year is controlling his team’s emotions.

“You can’t jump ahead to the game without going through the day-to-day detail, preparation,” he said. “We have to have detailed preparation—that’s been the key to what we’ve done to get here. We can’t bypass any of that and get caught up in the emotion of the game too early.”

Kelly, who was offensive coordinator at Oregon for the past two seasons before taking over for Mike Bellotti as head coach, said he has no doubt his players will be able to keep their emotions in check given what they’ve already been though this season.

Oregon headed into its national televised opener with an offense that was considered one of the most potent in the nation, but the Ducks got humiliated 19-8 on the blue turf at Boise State. To make matters worse, running back LeGarrette Blount punched a Broncos defensive end, bringing him to his knees in an embarrassing incident for the school.

Blount, who ran for 1,002 yards last season, was at first suspended for the season, but Oregon recently brought him back after he met certain academic and behavior requirements.

However, he has not played in a game.

“Our players have done a great job at handling everything we’ve been a part of. It started with Week 1 for us,” Kelly said. “So I’m not worried about this team at all in terms of their focus and attention to detail.”

So between the holiday and all the hype, what’s a Duck—or a Beaver—to do with the downtime? Backup quarterback Nate Costa was going hunting.

“Me and (offensive lineman) Jordan Holmes are going to go hunting for some turkeys and some ducks and hopefully knock something down and eat something for Thanksgiving,” he said.

Huh? Ducks?

“I don’t feel bad,” he said. “They taste pretty good.”

    Metz-

I graduated with Niko in '78. My memory is a little vague but I think he was the only underclassman to play varsity the NEHS-Ainge OSAA Championship team in '76. As I said, I just spent the last few months of my high school career there, so I wasn't really closely tied in.

When you mentioned Rhonda Revelle it rang a bit of a bell with me. Nice to know she went on to success.

Actually, since winter sports were pretty much done when I moved there (my only sports were football and wrestling) the only thing I could get involved in at the time was the spring play. The Ainge brothers had a younger sister Laurie who was also in my class who stayed out of her brothers' limelight but was pretty talented in her own right on the stage.

    Kammeres,

I bet your nephew knows Jim Lockard then. His Sons played hoops at North and he also use to coach there. Great job getting a full ride.

WaWeb, Steve Lyons also went to North for a while. He grew up in that part of town then moved to Portland his junior year and played baseball at OSU and then in the Pro's for a while. He was a hell of a basketball player as well. Niko would of been in the class of 1978.
I have a cousin who was a all-american softball pitcher who played at North (class of 1979). She is now the Corn Huskers head coach (Rhonda Revelle). You might now her ?
    Go DUCKS !

Dennis Dixon did well in his first start against the Ravens. He ran 24 yards for a TD, passed for a 33-yard TD, and had a 31-yard run negated by a holding penalty. That's a dimension to the team the Steelers haven't seen in a long time. Unfortunately his sole turnover - a pick on a forced pass - came in the OT and the Ravens kicked a FG to win. Bloggers from both sides had good stuff to say about Dixon on the game threads.

WAWebfoot, sounds like we're about the same age. I graduated from South in June 79. My brother's kids went to North Eugene. His older son graduated this year and is a freshman at Idaho on a full-ride basketball scholarship. BTW, did you get a chance to sample any Sofrito?

METZ, the Eugene-based Pre movie is great. That scene with him handing out sneakers to girls in a coffee shop, kinda looks like the old Hoot's Restaurant.

I think you are right....I remember that it involved a car. Yeah, he was a couple of years behind, but he could hold his own. They had a pretty good sports tradition at North. I owe a lot to baseball coach Garry Selby...he got me into baseball umpiring my senior year. That was 1978, and I haven't missed a spring or summer since.

I thought he got hit by a car on hwy 99. But not 100% certain. He was a good guy and a great athlete.
He was D-1 material for hoops and football. He starting hanging out with the wrong crowd.
    Anyway, go DUCKS !

I actually only went to North the end of my senior year, so I didn't get to know too many too well. I did have a class with Greg Niko...great guy and a great athlete. Tragedy what happened to him...he died in a car wreck somewhere in his early 20's, I think.

    Waweb,

You must know Ron Jarrett then. Trying to stop him was like running into a train. Loved that guy.
How about Greg Niko, Steve Moulton or Rhonda Revelle ?

Yeah, I know all about Dawg. He and I go around good-natured, because we both get the deal. We have had some good ribbing over the past few weeks.

I graduated from North Eugene the year after Danny Ainge. What a lot of people forget is that he was every bit as good a baseball player as basketball. He had a .444 batting average his senior year and made it to the big squad for Toronto in the late 70s. He spent three with the Blue Jays before going back to basketball.

As you know South Eugene had some of the best high school runners in the country. Some of the American records set in the 70s and 80s still stand today. I am also a huge Pre fan. They made 2 movies about his life. One filmed in Seattle and the other in Eugene. I suppose I enjoyed the Eugene version the best because they were at the actual locations. In the past a lot of great Oregon high school athletes did go out of state. Until Phil Knight stepped in we just did not have the facilities to keep them at home. Phil Knight has had more of a impact for Oregon Athletics than anything else.
Thanks for all your work in the military. Go Ducks !

METZ, hey man, you're right about Chris, I realized about half an hour after I posted that I was mistaken. My mind is going. . . .I wonder how many people know Danny Ainge came out of North Eugene HS? Oregon had a hard time keeping in-state recruits in the 70's and 80's, many went to the bigger regional market in Seattle or south to the sun in California.

Have you seen that Prefontaine movie? Lots of footage of the Eugene area, Hayward Field, etc., with the understory of the injustice of the AAU. They were pretty accurate with how the Nike waffle sole was invented. I haven't lived in Oregon since I joined the military in 1982, just been back occasionally, seems like every time I went back another handful of landmarks from my youth had been bulldozed or covered with a shopping mall/housing development/expansion of Sacred Heart Hospital.

Chris Miller actually played at Sheldon. I played at Churchill and Oregon with Oregon's current head line coach Steve Greatwood. He is a couple of years ahead of me. I also know Pre's sister (Linda).
She still lives in Eugene. She played Tennis for the Ducks. She has some great stories about Steve and Nike.
Some of the greatest Oregon athlete's came out of small towns.

METZ, on that note I'll add that Pre grew up in the Coos Bay area, damn shame he had to die so young. BTW, there's a movie out on him, "Without Limits", pretty accurate portrayal of his life. Donald Sutherland plays Coach Bowerman. CT may be referring to descendants of the bad kids bullying a young Prefontaine in the movie. You went to Churchill? Cool. One of the few UO players to enjoy a modicum of success in the NFL was a Churchill grad - Chris Miller. I went to South Eugene myself - missed my 30th reunion this year because I'm in Iraq.

CT, you're welcome for the sheepnapper news link. It made it onto fark.com's site, too.

WAWebfoot, you know Dawg posts that stuff just to get folks stirred up, nothing more. That 77-4 score would be hard to duplicate unless the 4 was from a combination of safeties and botched PAT's run back the other way.

    CT,

It is amazing to me that you would knock any of your fellow Ducks regardless of the home towns. I hope you feel better for doing so. I was born and raised in Eugene (Churchill High) and played many games at Autzen and your attitude makes me sick. One of the greatest runners of all time and founders of Nike is from the Oregon coast (PRE).
Your not a true DUCK. Your just a DICK !

Is somebody in here representing Coos Bay? Get that man a mullet and a cold Weinhards Blitz.

I can not believe anyone would defend that youtube garbage. Is it that "I get knocked out" song that they rip off? I can't really tell, I think that's it but the hook is a little off.

Thanks for the post on the OSU sheepnapping, that was the conversation ender for so many years in conversations with Beavs.

The only time the Beavs ever got me out of a jam was tailgating outside Seahawks Stadium the day after a Civil War loss by the Ducks maybe 5 or 6 years ago. We basically got caught with open containers, which we didnt technically know were illegal. Don't red Solo cups negate all culpability in those situations? The cop gets out to talk to us all and our buddy is still dressed head to toe in Beavs gear from the night before. And of course he's loud and mouthy. The cop asks us if we are all Beavs fans and we of course answer that we're all Ducks except for our obnoxious buddy. The cop just laughs and says if you have to hang out with this guy all day that's punishment enough and sent us on our way. True story.

I went to Oregon and while I love the players I only trust their judgement on a couple of things: How to get into college without learning to read, directions to Kowloon Restaurant, how to escape all responsibility for fights outside bars like the Mill Camp, and the best apartment in Chase or Duck Village.

Two things you can count on as regular as clockwork: Dawgmeat predicting Oregon on the receiving end of a blowout and Anne Petersen making a gratuitous reference to LGB at Boise State. For gawd sake Anne give it a freaking REST!!! At least Dawg knows how to make his shtick fresh every week!

And by the way, Dawg, about that TCU score...I love my Ducks but in order for them to score 4 points the defense would have to ring up two safeties, and I don't see that happening. I couldn't wait for the punchline on the PAC-10 vs. Texas scores...223-0 indeed! lol

    CT,

From the interviews in the paper the Oregon athletic department, Chip Kelly, Masoli and the rest team love the song.
That is fine if you don't like the tribute. But not cool beating up on your fellow Ducks and dissing anyones home towns.

That Duck tribute on Youtube is juvenile and embarrassing at best. Those idiots look like a bunch of Coos Bay graduates. I love the U of O but damn, when you drive more than 10 miles off I-5 in Oregon and it is redneck meth country. Any visit to Curtain or Drain will show you that.

Please, self respecting Duck fans, do not reference that Youtube clip, it is RoboDuck-esque in its absurdity.

Also, can somebody find that article from a couple years back when the OSU players kidnapped that sheep from the Animal Husbandry lab next to their stadium only to find out it was a male? Seriously, this really happened. What was that, 2005, 2006?

If you are a Duck fan you need to go to You Tube and check out a song some of the U of O students put together. The song is called-----I love my Ducks.
I understand they used the Duck without the schools permission and there is some controversy over the whole thing.

42-28 Ducks over Beavs, but man this seems like a long time to wait for Civil War. If the game was in Salsa Stadium or the "Burrito" as they call it I might give OSU a better chance.

Mike Hass isn't walking through that door.

You do have to give it up to the Beavs a little bit, every year they have these early mind boggling losses but they always finish the season incredibly strong.

2 things to worry about fellow Duck fans, OSU has the Pac's best run D and also the best passing offense and efficiency. The Ducks do have twice as many sacks however. Looks like if the Ducks can get to the QB then all will be ok this game.

2 TDs for Blount, they will give him some goal line carries this game I think to boost his confidence and James already broke the freshman rushing record.

    Vive les Canards!
