Cincy QB Pike expected to practice

  • Print

CINCINNATI (AP)—Tony Pike will practice with fourth-ranked Cincinnati this week, his status still uncertain because of an injury to his non-passing arm.

Coach Brian Kelly said Monday that the senior quarterback will participate in more practice drills. Then Kelly will decide whether he has a chance to play on Saturday night against Connecticut (4-4).

Pike broke his left forearm last season, had a plate and six screws inserted, and returned after missing two games. With a cast on the arm, he led Cincinnati to its first Big East title.

The plate was damaged in a win over South Florida on Oct. 15, and Pike had to have the plate replaced. Sophomore Zach Collaros has led the Bearcats (7-0) to wins over Louisville and Syracuse, throwing seven touchdown passes in those two games. He also ran for a pair of touchdowns after replacing Pike in the win at South Florida.

The Bearcats are confident Collaros can run the offense, so there’s no urgency to rush Pike back into the lineup before he’s comfortable playing with the surgically repaired forearm. Pike has been limited to individual work in practice so far.

“This will be the first week that he actually takes some team reps and 7-on-7 reps,” Kelly said. “I don’t know what to expect until I see him in that form. He’ll do that Wednesday and we’ll see how he looks.”

Pike was one of the nation’s leading passers when he got hurt, running Cincinnati’s spread, no-huddle offense with a deft passing touch. Pike ranks eighth nationally in yards passing per game with 299 and has gotten the attention of NFL scouts.

Kelly said it’s unclear when Pike might play again.

“He’s a lot closer than he was,” Kelly said. “It’s hard to say. He’s obviously got to feel comfortable in his own mind that he can be out there. We probably won’t know for a couple of days.”

While Pike recovers, Collaros has kept the offense going. Cincinnati ranks fifth nationally in scoring with 39 points per game and eighth in total offense with 454 yards.

Collaros has completed 75 percent of his passes for 749 yards with nine touchdowns and one interception this season. He also has run for 213 yards and two touchdowns.

The sophomore showed his strengths as a quarterback at Syracuse. Three of his four touchdown passes came off broken plays, when he was able to scramble for time and find an open receiver. The 28-7 win kept Cincinnati off to its best start since 1951.

Collaros was third on the depth chart last spring, behind Pike and fellow sophomore Chazz Anderson. Kelly didn’t like the way he improvised instead of running the offense, a habit that Collaros has gotten under control.

“You want to extend plays, but you don’t want to make plays up,” Kelly said. “There needs to be discipline in the approach to any position, but moreso at quarterback. That’s what Zach has done a much better job at.”

Post 37 - If only all Buckeye fans were as reasonable as you!

Post 41 - I agree with you except USC. Their out of confernce was San Diego State, Ohio State and Notre Dame. To the best of my knowledge USC has not ever played a D-1AA school. I am a Notre Dame Fan so you know I hate USC, but lets face it they play a real schedule.

To post 30... teams need to strenghten their schedules...how many cupcakes do bama and fla play each and every year? Just look at their non-conf. scheduling and ask yourself, why, dont they schedule tougher matchups? The Utahs, TCU's, Boise's, and Cincinnati's try to schedule with the so-called elite conferences, and for some reason, they dont want anything to do with them: could it be: Why take a chance on getting Beat? So, instead of the Bama's, Fla's , USC's {you know, the good ol boys pets} playing cupcakes, why dont they pursue the Tougher Teams???

With the Buckeyes out of nc chase , i hope the Bearcats can win out and get a shot , but i think there will need to be a few losses to the teams ranked in front of them first . At least three of the four teams if not all four will need to loose at leat one game before anyone would consider them . I dont see any lower ranked team leap frogging them . If it should play out that way .
I think it would force the ncaa into considering a playoff system , only because Cincinnati going to a championship game vrs TCU would not be very popular with alot of college football fans .
I can see Cincinnati beating a Texas team though ........ (and i would love to see a bunch of ohio kids in the nc game , if the buckeyes cant go . )
Good luck Bearcats , i hope the Buckeyes can knock off Iowa for ya

Forget about strength of schedule. Get 8 sections with 8 teams in each section and let the 8 section winners have a playoff with whoever wins the section. Sure some sections are toughter, but didn't the Giants get into to playoff 2 years ago after losing 6 games???? Besides this would get rid of these personal, prejudice and good friend selections of who gets in.

The Bearcats and any other team not seen as a BCS sweetheart (FL, TX, AL) will always get overlooked. The teams don't pick who they want to play every year; if they did, they would most likely choose higher rated teams. But, as long as Cincy is winning, and winning by large margins, that will probably be the only way people will take notice. Don't forget, they weren't even ranked when the season began, all because they lost 10 of their starters. Oh, ye BCS and analysts of little faith!! I won't put too much into these rankings anymore...I've see what the 'Cats can do and I wish them all the best for another awesome season!! Go 'Cats!!

Ok...Cincy beat up the projected Big East champion Rutgers, the first game of the season and from then on have beaten teams: Oregon State and USF, who were both in the top 25 when they played them. Cincy has made it through just about half of their Big East schedule (3 of the first 4 Big East games were on the road)=more hostile crowds. They still have two big games against WV and Pitt, both of which could be in the top 25 when they play those teams. How can you say that Cincy doesn't deserve where they are at? Also, this is WITH losing all defensive starters, but ONE from last season. And they aren't playing scrubs every week. Many are top 25 teams. If Cincy wins out, they should get a chance at the national championship.

A playoff would be fair for all teams, but that would reduce the fatcats payday!!

I wish ALL Division 1 schools would not play any creampuffs. It is great for the little schools because they get a nice payday, even though their team gets the crap beat out of them.

With all due respect, the second tier schools like Boise State, Cincinnati, TCU & Iowa need to strengthen their schedules so they will be taken seriously by the powers that make the bowl decisions.

    Roll Tide!!!

We need a playoff instead of the BCS appointing a champion! How can you honestly argue against it? Is the system fair? No. Would a playoff fix it? Yes.

well 2 where bad play calling. the one ran back for a td was one of the most idiotic calls ive seen here, and thats saying something.

you dont throw middle screens to a 5 7 back when hes standing around 6 4 + lineman

havent seen that play since so guess they got the point.

wvu has top 5 talent. but will never be back in the top 5 with the way they are being coached

but if you look at it, 6 turnovers it shouldve never been that close.

    I remember the score.
We get beat by a 11 and 0 team once and we have to deal with it for the next decade..And teams like Boise st. was to lose and it's like ...Well we wasnt suppose to win anyways. we're way out here.

Look at Utah's schedule last year and tell me it's the same kind of strenth schedule that boise st. and TCU and has this year!
    Not even close!!!
But, I will say cincy has the rough of the 3
and I will also say their playing great football.
But, still who have they beat other than So. Florida. that can really be defined as having somewhat of a good team?
and to throw teams in that had a weak schedule in. and give them free shots @ a championship is just wrong!!!

besides wvu is irrelevant, since they are not in the discusion of being in the BSC Champ game. and I dont think they should be.

But Cinci are and so is Boise St. So if you want to talk about strength of schedule, the top 3 teams dont have any more leverage than Cinci or Boise State.

so back to the orgional point here. only way to really get a true champion is a playoff.

I mean look at happend to Bama against Utah .

not so much. at least boise st, cinci and wvu schedules ooc games with teams that are in a BSC confrence.

Yeah I would agree that the SEC is the toughest conf with out a doubt. but bama and floridas occ is very weak compared to those teams. fact.

and after watching bama play tenn last week id say good for the fans they dont play a wining team outside the confrence.
