Cincy QB Pike expected to start against Illinois

CINCINNATI (AP)—Barring a problem in practice, quarterback Tony Pike will start for fifth-ranked Cincinnati against Illinois on Friday.

Coach Brian Kelly said Monday that the Bearcats’ bye week helped Pike get ready to start his first game since damaging a plate in his non-throwing arm during a win at South Florida on Oct. 15. Pike needed to have the plate replaced and doctors made a foot-long incision for the surgery.

Sophomore backup Zach Collaros started the next four games and helped the Bearcats (10-0) remain unbeaten. Pike played briefly in a 24-21 win over West Virginia on Nov. 13, taking four snaps and throwing two touchdown passes while wearing a protective brace on the left forearm.

Kelly let Pike run the offense as the starter in practice last week so he could get up to speed and be ready to start.

“It’s going to be Tony Pike, unless something happens during practice unexpected,” Kelly said. “The six weeks since the injury has allowed the bone to heal properly to the point that we’ve minimized the risk of putting him out there. He’s excited by the chance to play on Friday.”

If he comes through the game without incident, Pike is expected to start on Dec. 5 in Pittsburgh, a game that could determine the Big East champion.

Kelly said Pike has gained confidence as the arm has healed—but it won’t get its biggest test until Pike is hit for the first time against Illinois.

“Obviously he understands the game’s not played in a vacuum,” Kelly said. “It’s not flag football. He’s going to get hit.

“I’m sure he’s going to have some moments on Friday where he goes, ‘Oh, OK, here it comes,’ and he’s got to take care of himself.”

Pike broke the same forearm last season and had a plate and six screws installed. He returned after missing two games but experienced numbness in his left hand a few games later, forcing Kelly to turn to a backup.

Cincy has a good team. But their true test will come against Pitt. If they handle Pitt and throw on some style points, and one of the big 3, (or 4 if you bring in TCU which is also a good team) go down, then why not consider them? But, in the same respect, if they lose to Pitt, can we all agree they are out of the NC picture??? How is their recruiting looking for next year? Will they be back or is this lightning in a bottle for them this year? I think it will be FL vs. TX for the NC the way things are looking. Alabama boasts so much, but I seem to remember a small school put up 31 points to their 17 in their bowl game last year; this after they got beat by FL. I would love to see Cincy do the same thing Utah did to them last year. Those bama boys just love that humble pie, and crow, (I'm not kiddin' dude, they really eat crows - hey it's alabama).

We will have to endure only 1 more week of the Cincy hype as they will probably beat Illinois. However all this will be put to rest the following week when the first loss is finally handed to them by PITT. Their game against WVU game means absolutely nothing in regards to the Big East championship. The winner on Dec 5 gets the crown and a BCS bid. I will finally be glad to have all the media eat crow who have been handing this league to the Bearcats since day 1. Cincy could have easily lost to UCONN and/or WVU. They just squeaked by. Their luck runs out in the last regular season contest. Oh, as for the other debate that constantly rages, OSU definitely wins a head to head meeting also.

Cincinnati is No.2 in the state of Ohio. If they were in a real conference they would be 7-4 or 6-5, and scrambling to get a bowl game. I know we live in a "look out for the the little guy", touchy feely world now, but Cincinnati in a big money game? Give us all a break.

Post 163, I agree we should have a playoff system but saying who is overrated and who's not is an opinion. A play-off would settle everything though so, I'm all for a play-off system because the bowl system is just a money maker for big businesses.

Cincinnati is the 2nd overrated team in the BCS ton 10. Who have they played? TCU would wipe them off the place of the planet yet alone Florida. Texas is the most overrated team in the BCS and would still wipe the floor with Cincinnati. The whole system is flawed, have a playoff and settle this BS on the field.

150 - Chad B - Why are you so mad? I come on these boards for nice calm football conversations and everybody is mad here lately. This conference hates this other conference. When someone posts something that you don't agree with, post them back and give facts to back up your opinions. Your blood pressure will stay down and you may win the point.

The computers have UC ranked 3 with a score of 0.92 Fl is 0.93 and BAMA is 1.0 UC is very likely to finish at worst second by the computers if the win out. The 2 human polls have them at 5 so if TX loses UC should finish 2 in the human polls as 1 SEC team will lose Dec 5 and TCU has 1 game left against a non BCS school that has not won a game all year. UC has 2 BCS teams left PITT which has a chance to win the Big East in the final. So, if UC wins out and TX loses just one game UC goes to the National Championship game. I know this bothers a lot of college football fans as they all root against UC except UC fans. So much for tradition just look at ND and USC this year not in the BCS picture.

Look I'm tired of people saying Cincy shouldn't be ranked or Cincy suck or Cincy that! They are by far the best team in college football. You Florida fans and Texas fans and you stupid Alabama fans are all scared and jealous of the Bearcats. They can beat you guys with there eyes closed. There that good. And people saying that Tim Teabow is the best there is....LAUGH. That guys plain sucks. All he does is run the stupid ball and everybody thinks hes the best. Tony Pike and Zach Collaros are WAY better than Teabow. BCS are scared to rank Cincinnati number one because they know they will humiliate Texas or Gators. So next before you say anything about the Bearcats, remember this message.

Yes, Cincy beating Oregon State by more than USC did does matter! Simply put, the Bearcats are a superior team to USC. I watched both games. The Beavers should have defeated USC. They certainly outplayed them except on the scoreboard. Cincy, however, outplayed the Beavers in all categories. I do think the PAC 10 is the strongest conference in the Nation. USC should not be rated above Oregon as already mentioned. Makes no sense at all. Will they still be after Stanford takes care of them this weekend?

Hey Matt Screw you. Im so tired of hearing about Refs. Are you scared of the Bearcats? You SEC fans think your the best. As you should you have Forida and Alabama. LOL They both just keep getting bye. We will see what happens come bowl time. Texas is gonna clean up the pieces after y'all get done with your little tea party. Take your skirt off and put your big boy pants on for that game! You are gonna need the refs so dont cry about them to much!

That TD that Cincy just scored was bs. He clearly didn't have possession of the ball and the ball never even crossed. To all you b!tches saying that the SEC refs are corrupt, screw you. Looks like the Big East refs are trying to keep Cincy undefeated.

    Roll Tide!!!!!

Cincy is a good team and their coach has a system that works for both QB's. Their defense could be better but their offense is one of the best in the nation. I wish all the people posting on this thread would stick to the subject. This is not about USC, Texas, Oregon, thePAC ten or any of the dumb comments that have been offered up. This is about should Cincy start Pike or Collaros. Pike will get a shot in the NFL but Collaros may not because of his size (5'11 maybe). This is college football so I say start Collaros because he provides more options in the offense.
