Collaros might keep starting job for Cincy

CINCINNATI (AP)—By keeping his team perfect, Zach Collaros has forced his coach to reconsider.

When senior quarterback Tony Pike hurt his non-passing arm, Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly said he’d get this job back when he was ready. In the meantime, his sophomore backup got to run one of the nation’s most potent offenses.

Collaros has made it even more dangerous.

He threw for 480 yards—the second-best passing total in school history— and set a school record for total offense in a 47-45 victory over Connecticut on Saturday night, a sensational performance that might have won him the starting job indefinitely.

“He just sees the field extremely well and made plays all over the place,” Kelly said.

For the second season in a row, fifth-ranked Cincinnati (9-0, 5-0 Big East) is flourishing behind a backup quarterback.

Pike took over last season when senior Dustin Grutza broke his leg. Pike then broke his non-passing forearm, got a plate inserted to help the injury heal, missed two games, and returned wearing a protective brace. Pike, who wasn’t even on the depth chart in summer camp, led the Bearcats to their first Big East title and an Orange Bowl appearance.

He was getting the attention of NFL scouts for his strong arm—and some mentions as a Heisman Trophy long shot—when he was hit during the first half of a win over South Florida on Oct. 15. The plate was damaged and had to be replaced. Cincinnati’s fate was in the hands of Pike’s backup, who was recruited as a baseball player out of high school even though his Steubenville, Ohio, football team went 30-0 his last two seasons.

Collaros has taken the offense to new levels, growing week by week. His performance against UConn was the best yet.

He went 29 of 37 for 480 yards and a touchdown, trailing only Greg Cook’s 554-yard passing game on the school record list. Collaros also ran for 75 yards and a pair of touchdowns, setting a school record with his combined 555 yards.

In so many ways, it was unprecedented.

“Zach went for, who knows? Five million yards or something like that?” said receiver Mardy Gilyard, who caught 12 passes for 172 yards. “Zach had an excellent day. When we’ve got a quarterback who can throw and run, we’ve got so many weapons that it’s hard to defend us.”

Collaros provided the final proof on the last drive, when Cincinnati needed to score to close it out. He completed all four of his passes, setting up Isaiah Pead’s clinching touchdown run.

Kelly wasn’t surprised. After watching Collaros grow so much in the last three weeks, he was confident he would handle the pressure like he has everything else thrown at him.

“He’s so wide-eyed and interactive in terms of his conversation all the time,” Kelly said. “He’s a really unique guy in that sense. He’s looking at you and he’s talking to you about things that are occurring, and it’s a pretty special conversation that you have. So I knew none of that stuff was going to bother him.”

In the most pressure-packed minutes of his brief college career, he was perfect.

“There was definitely a sense of urgency,” Collaros said. “There really was the whole second half. Everyone on offense was saying, ‘They can’t beat us if they can’t stop us.’ On that last drive, everybody just cowboyed up and we did it.”

Collaros has been the Bearcats’ cavalry. Now, the big question: Which quarterback gets to take Cincinnati the rest of the way?

Kelly had maintained since Pike got hurt that the senior would get his job back when he’s capable of playing. He got a custom-made splint last week and was able to practice more fully. Kelly had considered getting him into the game on Saturday night to try to get his passing touch back, but the chance never came.

“We thought about doing it if the circumstance were right,” Kelly said. “I would have preferred to get him in and throw a couple of balls around there and kind of get the butterflies out, but it never really presented itself.”

The Bearcats have a short practice week leading up to their home game on Friday night against West Virginia. Pike will practice, but he’ll have to do a lot to convince Kelly that he deserves his job back instead of Collaros, who is 79 of 89 for 1,100 yards with eight touchdown throws in the last three games.

The decision is no longer clear-cut.

“He’s made it hard,” Kelly said. “OK, I’ve changed my mind based on the way he’s played the last three games. I think I have to reconsider my decision.”

OSU I agree with you statement that they should play both QB's. I mean with that much talent on had you can only move in the positive direction. I know it happens more often than not that a secondary comes out guns a blazing & does some really good work but it doesnt happen that often in college so for it to happen for MY UC BEARCATS I gotta say it feels me with a lotta joy. NOW IF ONLY WE CAN KEEP THAT TALENT HERE IN OHIO & USE IT FOR THE CINCINNATI BENGALS THAT WOULD PHANTASMAGORICAL . Do you agree?

For all the naysayers Cincy has done what is asked to do and that is win every game on the schedule to this point. Talk abot a sleeping giant? Cincy has all of the pieces in place to become a major player on the national scene. Cincy may not get the blue chip recruits that the Ohio State University gets, but they probably do get a few recruits from the state of Ohio who know the game and are tough as they come. Mix that with some skill guys from elsewhere and you have Brian Kelly creating a BCS monster. Say what you want about the Big East and the non BCS (TCU), but outside of the SEC is there anyone anywhere who scare the daylights out of people? Good luck Cincy this coming from a Conecticut native.

Tony Pike has a great arm, good accuracy, and a ton of potential. Zach Collaros is a scrappy guy, pretty good passer, and adds the run option to the Cincinnati QB spot. What a great 'PROBLEM" to have.

It is a System like Texas Tech as long as the QB undestands the system it will run great. Brian kelly when he was at Grnad Valley State won a few NC's. One year he fell short only by a few points cant remember hte score. But, all through out the playoffs he was losing QB's. He was down to a WR playing QB and still almost won the NC game. He has developed a great offensive system. The common trend is though that his QB's take alot of shots. With UCONN scoring alot of points I actually blame that on the offense as well. The defense has played well all year. This is the only game they have given up alot of points. The problem is the offense scores so fast sometimes the defense just gets tired. They might want to slow the tempo way down when they have big leads sometimes just to let there D get a breather. Not saying run different plays just let play clock run down a little. Also Brian Kelly has said he will stay at Cincy as long as they are willing to upgrade there facilities. Which they are getting a practice facility now. As long as the University makes progress every year I dont see him jumping ship. Just wish my Wolverines could have snagged him before he left Central Michigan or when he left Grand Valley State.

    Die Hard college football fan.

I'm happy to see Cinci. doing well. I hope they can continue and go undefeated. It will be tough but they can do it. I am also very happy for Zach. Steubenville Big Red players get over looked because they play in D3 in Ohio but they have very talented players. I hope coaches will start to look at their team for the future.

As a RU fan, I don't feel so bad about our game one loss to Cincy. It's a damn good team and though I'd like to play 'em again, I still think the outcome would be the same--though much closer.

They've had a good run so far. Unfortunately their remaining schedule is pretty tough. Illinois should be an easy one, but it is sandwiched between two top 25 BCS teams. If West Virginia or Pittsburgh wins out they win the big east. I attend WVU and have watched their games. If Cincy's defense allows our offense to move the ball then they will lose. The stats won't show it, but WV has been winning primarily because of defense. If Cincy wins then they will meet pitt in a battle for the BCS slot.

As an OSU fan, have to say that Cincy looks really good this year, congrads and best wishes. There are folks here in Columbus that are wishing they could bring in someone like coach Kelly and put some additional spark into OSU's offense. Been a rough season. There are some nuts in the OSU camp saying Cincy couldn't beat them, I wouldn't say that for a second, you folks were one dropped pass in the end zone from beating OSU's squad in 2002.

I'm not a Cincinnati fan, but my hat's off to Brian Kelly and his staff. They've built the Bearcats into a formidable team, and Lord knows it can't be easy to recruit talent to that city. If they end up beating Florida I would be smiling till about April.

They should both play. Start one the first half then play the other the second half. However, do not tell who the starter is till game time and do not tell that the other will start the second. This way when the defense of the other team readjust before the second half this would throw the other team off. If Tony would have played the second they would have easily scored 30 instead of 17 and UCONN would have been forced to be one dimensional offensively and would not have scored 45.
