Cal RB Jahvid Best hurt on touchdown

  • Print

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP)—California tailback Jahvid Best sustained a concussion and was taken to the emergency room after he leapt high into the air, flipped over a defender and landed on the back of his head in the end zone.

Best briefly lost consciousness following the terrifying fall from at least 5 feet, coach Jeff Tedford said after No. 23 Cal’s 31-14 loss to Oregon State.

Tedford said initial tests had come back normal.

Best had movement in all of his extremities, Cal spokesman Herb Benenson said. Benenson also said that a preliminary evaluation showed Best sustained a concussion, but more tests were being done before a final diagnosis would be announced by the school. Tedford didn’t know whether Best would be kept in the hospital over night.

Best’s helmet came off on impact. He vaulted into the air over Oregon State safety Cameron Collins on the 7-yard touchdown run. Best’s jersey was removed and he was wearing an oxygen mask when carted out of the stadium. Benenson said Best was taken to an emergency room for observation and examination.

Best missed practice Tuesday and Wednesday with a slight concussion sustained in the team’s 23-21 win at Arizona State last Saturday, but participated in full during Thursday’s workout. The concussion wasn’t diagnosed right away.

Tedford said the fact Best has sustained two concussions in a week’s span would be taken seriously.

“I’m sure that will be talked about,” Tedford said. “He will be evaluated very closely, no question about it. There’s no way we’d take a chance with any of our players.”

The latest injury—with 6:07 before halftime—silenced Memorial Stadium, where fans chanted “Jahvid! Jahvid!” before everything went quiet. At least one family member was among those around the 20-year-old junior.

His teammates went down on their knees and waited, then moved to the end zone as trainers and doctors took him away on a stretcher. The game was delayed 13 minutes. Some of Oregon State’s players who were on the field at the time huddled together in support.

Before play resumed, Tedford told his players Best was moving and assured them he would be OK.

“That took the worry off us. We were holding our breath and able to exhale,” safety Sean Cattouse said. “It was a hard moment for us to see Jahvid go down like that. There was silence. When he was staying down there, it got scary.”

Best, one of the most dynamic running backs in the country and a preseason Heisman Trophy contender, has 16 touchdowns and 867 rushing yards this season for the Golden Bears, including 29 yards on nine carries Saturday. He also has 22 catches for 213 yards.

Cal quarterback Kevin Riley took a hard hit with 1:19 left in the first half and was helped to the sideline. He returned in the second half.

Stanford Fan said it right. We see a lot of these plays when the back jumps to get over the goal line and a defender also has to jump to stop him. The people who are acting like the hit was something after he had clearly scored know nothing about football. Any one who hits the ground with their helmet is putting their neck at risk, not much you can do about this, probably why the NCAA has the rule about not jumping into the end zone.

Anyway looks like Jahvid came out of this OK, although wouldn't be playing him again for a while.

He didn't "land on his head", Jane: he landed flat on his back and knocked himself out, and ANYONE that has ever watched a knock out in a boxing or MMA fight knew he was fine on replay. I worried until I saw the replay.

The stiffening arms: a sure sign of a concussion, I wasn't worried about him at all after that. Girl.

That was a scary play and I hope Best recovers fully and quickly...Kind of hard to blame anyone on this, though. Best was cleared to practice and to play. He got to the 2-yard line and instinctively made a choice. The OSU defender also responded instinctively; he's trying to keep Best from crossing the goal line, and it's hard to expect that, from where he stood, he should have "known" that Best had already crossed it while in the air. On defense, you react.

Still, it was a tough play to watch...Prayers go out to Best, his family, and Cal football.

Not sure why there is such venom for the Oregon State defenders by a couple of posters...sure, you can say it was "absolutely clear" that Best had crossed the goal line when you look at it from multiple camera angles in slow motion from the comfort of your living room. But when you are the guy whose job it is to keep the guy out of the end zone, you move in for the goal-line tackle, and the runner unexpectedly goes airborne, freaky and unintended things are going to happen. Nobody did anything wrong. Its football, and sometimes scary things happen when you turn large, fast, and strong young men loose to do regulated but violent things to each other. Thankfully, it looks like Best will be OK.

Niceguy, thanks for regurgitating everything we already knew yet with the added condescending tone: "We appreciate the accomplishments of all of OUR student athletes..." That was embarrassing!

I think niceguy very well be a pseudo name for wiseguy. Just trying to get a rise out of everyone. Sorry you did not make the PR ("public relations") payroll. Come clean Jeckyl-and-Hyde!

For people questioning Cal for plaing Best after he received a slight concussion, I have one thing to say about that get over yourselves. Comparing it to Tebow's concussion is strictly nonsense.

Tebow's concussion was much worse than what Best suffered against ASU. There are different types of concussions which are on a continuum.

Just like Autism is a continuum. You have high functioning Autism to low functioning. You would treat a high functioning autistic person differently then a low functioning autistic person.

So, you can also assume that in the case of concussions they are treated on that continuum scale. Obviously Cal doctors approved Best for the game otherwise he would not have been playing.

Jahvid Best is a well conditioned athlete and coach Tedford will carefully evaluate Jahvid's condition before allowing him to play in any future games. Of course, Jahvid's desire to return will play a major factor. He is old enough to understand the ramifications of returning too soon because there have been a lot of articles written about concussions lately.

We appreciate the accomplishments of all our student athletes and wish a speedy recovery to Jahvid, but as an alumni I would never want him to return to play until he and the staff feel it is safe. His future is more important than a game or two.

Anyone that wishes injury to any student athlete is an obvious moron and their comments should be removed as being abusive.

    So the question is this:

Will he play next weekend after sustaining consecutive concussions?

The PAC10 needs to step up and do the right thing.

Listen you people--I'm an avid beaver fan and that was a terrible thing that happened--don't blame the coaches, they could not know that would happen. And Jahvid probably insisted that he wanted to play. things like this "Just Happen" when you play the game.

    57. Posted by Hadenough - I agree with you. I didn't realize that Jahvid Best had sustained a slight concussion last week and had missed a couple days practice prior to yesterday's game! Wow! - That is truly negligent on Cal's coaching stafff. At least Florida had a bye week after Tebow received his concussion giving him two weeks to recover. After watching the video replay of that incident - I wasn't sure but was he not already across the goal line when he tried that high jump? I didn't see the game just the hilites but it appeared that he had already crossed the goal line. In any case - I wish Jahvid Best a speedy and full recovery.

One way to make football safer is to use a little common sense and not player a guy who missed two days of practice that week because of a concussion. Obviously it wouldn't have chnage that play but it's absurd to have him on the field taking that risk.

Best's landing and what followed were very frightening to watch. I'm sure the Cal fans felt the way we Gator fans did when Tebow went down - shock and extreme concern for the well-being of a young life. I wish Jahvid a speedy and complete recovery.

You better be careful wishing bad things on people - sometimes you get what you wish on others!!! I wish Jahvid Best a speedy recovery and hope his career has not come to an end.
