OSU wide receiver suspended for season

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP)—Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant will remain suspended for the remainder of the football season for lying to NCAA investigators.

The NCAA ruled Tuesday that the junior All-American will not be eligible to play until September 2010, possibly bringing his college career to an end if he enters the NFL draft.

Oklahoma State plans to appeal the decision, but athletic department spokesman Kevin Klintworth declined further comment. The university said it could receive a decision on the appeal as early as next week.

The university announced on Oct. 7 that Bryant was ineligible because he lied to the NCAA about his relationship with former NFL star Deion Sanders. He has sat out the last four games for the No. 13 Cowboys (6-1, 3-0 Big 12), who host No. 3 Texas on Saturday night in a game that will likely determine which team plays for the Big 12 championship.

The NCAA said in a news release that Bryant’s penalty actually constituted “relief” from even more severe penalties for breaking the agency’s rules for ethical conduct and preferential treatment. Bryant could have been forced to miss as few as six games or be permanently ineligible.

The NCAA said mitigating factors presented in Oklahoma State’s case resulted in a lighter penalty for Bryant. The decision was based on whether Bryant “actively and deliberately concealed, omitted or provided inaccurate or false information” to the NCAA and whether he had multiple chances to provide accurate information but did not do so.

E-mail exchanges between an Oklahoma State compliance official and the NCAA indicate that there was concern that Bryant’s meeting with Sanders was a way to connect him to an agent, something Sanders has denied. Bryant claimed in a letter of apology to the NCAA that he jogged briefly with Sanders at a Texas athletics center without breaking a sweat and then went to Sanders’ house for dinner, but did not eat.

Oklahoma State said in its reinstatement request that it would classify the meeting as a violation of NCAA rules prohibiting preferential treatment.

Bryant caught 87 passes for 1,480 yards and 19 touchdowns last season while also scoring twice on punt returns. This season, Bryant led the team with 17 catches for 323 yards and four touchdowns through OSU’s first three games.

While Bryant played in OSU’s first three games, OSU compliance officials were investigating an apparent meeting he had with former NFL players Sanders and Omar Stoutmire that he later lied about to the NCAA. Bryant sent a letter with his initial application for reinstatement, asking to play again this season and that his “punishment is not so bad that I do not get to play football again at OSU.”

Bryant has not commented publicly since the university ruled him ineligible because he “failed to openly disclose to the NCAA the full details of his interaction with a former NFL player not affiliated with OSU.” Sanders later identified himself as that player, and Bryant also referred to him in his letter to the NCAA.

After his initial suspension, the university released a statement from Bryant saying “I made a mistake by not entirely truthful when meeting with the NCAA.”

OU fan here and although OSU fans are insanely overzealous in regards to their team's "moral victories". That alone should not make them the NCAA'S whipping stick. Lying or not, anyone could plainly ascertain the mitigating circumstances surrounding the facts were clearly evident. What the suits should have really tried to establish is what the actual intent was of said player. People are notorious for gaining some power and then abusing it. This is without a doubt another such example of forgetting the big picture and what you are suppose to regulate in the first place.

I want to get this straight - Reggie Bush robs the bank and takes money from an agent at USC and no penalty from the NCAA. Bryant "lies" and loses his season. The NCAA continues to amaze me everyday.

    Mr. Common Sense,

Last I heard, the NCAA has yet to close the case on Reggie Bush. Their problem is that most of the people they want to talk to, they can't as they have no jurisdiction over agents, Bush's parents or even Reggie himself. They have no subpeona power.

In regards to Oklahoma, one our own (who happened to spend a lot of time in California) is quoted as saying that when the Okies left Oklahoma during the Dust Bowl, it raised the IQ of both states.

This "violation" has to get the TRIVIALITIES OF 2009 AWARD. I am not a fan of OSU but fair is fair. I can see this kid in a room with NCAA lawyers, with no counsel of his own, being grilled by the "suits", he lied, just as most anyone would. What ever happened to the right to not testify against yourself, was he advised of his constitutional rights? Who ever said the NCAA is fair, more like faux.

They not only hurt him, but they hurt the whole team when they did this. The NCAA is a joke. They take a kid, throw him in a room with a double sided mirror, and start questioning him. What did they think this kid was going to do? They scared the hell out of him. Ok to tell a lie was not the right thing to do, but neither is what they are doing. Its not like he got a car, a house, or money. He just knows Deion, so what.

    Go Vols!!!!

This is such a petty piece of crap by the NCAA! Who gave these clowns the authortiy to tell football players who they can hang out with or be friends with? If I understand this idiotic rule; If Dieon Sanders had been a graduate of OK State then it would be alright for Bryant to hang out with him. However, since he was a FSU graduate then it is not okay for Bryant to hang out with him??!! Maybe Bryant didn't think it was a big enough deal to inform the NCAA, or just didn't know he was doing anything wrong - I don't know but it does seem like a petty charge and at the most, Bryant should have maybe gotten a 1 game suspension. To take a whole year out of his life just because some NCAA moron says so is a little ridiculous! At least he didn't accept thousands of dollars like Reggie Bush did while at USC, or maybe he should have!! It seems to be okay to do that since the NCAA has done nothing about it! So- to get over on the NCAA morons, make a major mistake and you're okay! But if you slip up and do something petty like not telling them who your friends are then you get buried!

This is indeed a travesty! I am a Longhorn and would honestly take any edge over our opponents to win, but this is just crap! Deon is the plague. Please kids, beware of him and the rest of the Dallas Cowboy thugs of the 90's. They gold plated the whole drug running (seriously), gun wielding, strip bar fighting fad for NFL players!!!

This is an outrage! Lying about a non violation? Why are the sports writers not outraged! And all the while Reggie Bush and USC go untouched! There is an outrage! Reggie Bush should stripped of the Heisman, USC should have to forfeit every game in 2004 and 2005, and their 2004 National Championship be taken away. And if you are an SMU fan, you would have to wonder where is the DEATH PENALTY for USC??? Once again, the NCAA is seen for who they really are!

@ Brian s you cant blame deon for trying to help this young man get physically ready for the NFL you just can say he nor Bryant really understood the rules on that and also Bryant lied because he thought he was in trouble.

I can't believe the NCAA suspended Dez Bryant. What a load of crap! He didn't do anything wrong. The NCAA is playing God. What right does the NCAA have to ask Dez about a friendly relationship with Neon Deion. Dez didn't take money, didn't eat a meal, wasn't contacting an agent. So what if he lied. He was probably scared to say he had met with Deion. With all of the thugs allowed to play with various problems, how can the NCAA justify suspending Dez?

    Rolltide!!!

i think its messed up that the ncaa would suspend him for the season over that,it's not like he gained anything. i can see 4 games, but the season its way to much. the schools and coaches get paid so much off of these kids talent, and they get nothing. i played college ball foe alabama on the 92 championship team, so i know what it's like to get suspended, i was suspended for 2 games for the samething. how do you think coahes like saban. miles ,mack brown making over $4mil a year, top recruits who keep the fans faithful and coming back, the kids. if you dont really know about football ,or havent played ,you shouldnt make crazy comments about any team or anyone. the thing is. did you ,or do you play. and goodluck to bama this year rolltide.

A play off would be great but I don't think the money hungry @ssholes in charge are going to let it happen. Bama fans are wanting the same thing. I think it would be awesome to see the best 2 go at it. The money tied up in all the bowl games are what they are worried about not fan satisfaction. Hell use the bowl sites as the play off sites if they're worried about losing money the shouldn't be, the fans are going to go and see the games no matter where they are anyway.

Buford, Im with you, I absolutely hate college football. The system is definitely flawed. But, my love for Texas outweighs my hate for the system. College football has the chance to be the most exciting American sporting event, extremely loyal and passionate fans, decades of tradition, the bands, and the fact many of us are completely connected to our team due to the fact we're alumni. But because we're so loyal and the system we have is what we have, we watch all the games and all the bowls. Its a catch 22 thats going to be hard to break.
