La. Tech hopes to spoil more BCS dreams
Louisiana Tech has never played host to a team ranked as high as No. 5 Boise State.
But the Broncos (8-0, 3-0 WAC) should note the last time a ranked team strolled into Joe Aillet Stadium. Turn back the clock to 2004, when then-No. 17 Fresno State showed up, fresh off victories over Washington and Kansas State and dreaming of crashing the BCS party.
The Bulldogs shattered those hopes on the legs of Ryan Moats. Now of the NFL’s Houston Texans, Moats rolled for 236 yards and four touchdowns in a 28-21 victory.
For coach Derek Dooley, the chance for the Bulldogs (3-5, 2-3) to play spoiler again is just plain fun.
“We’ve been thinking about it all season,” said Dooley, whose team has lost seven straight to the Broncos. “It’s a big one for us and it would help a lot to shock the world.”
The world? Maybe not.
But the BCS rankings and Boise State’s postseason hopes? Undoubtedly.
Dooley also knows that for history to repeat itself, the Bulldogs will have to play their best game of the year, and maybe without some of their best players. Receiver and returner Phillip Livas injured an ankle last week, and running back Daniel Porter was knocked out with a concussion. Both are questionable for Friday night’s game.
“If we’re sitting here hoping Boise’s going to come in and have a letdown, we’re wishing in one hand and I’m not telling you what we’re doing in the other,” Dooley said. “At the end of the day, the wish ain’t going to come true. Boise’s going to come in and they’re going to be phenomenal in all phases, and the question is how do we play? That’s all we can control.”
The Broncos have put together their two most dominating games of the season. Led by quarterback Kellen Moore and a stingy defense, the Broncos have outscored their last two opponents 99-16.
Moore, the nation’s most efficient passer, has been terrific during that stretch, throwing for 501 yards and eight touchdowns in victories over Hawaii and San Jose State. Moore is second in the nation with 24 TDs on the season and has thrown just two picks.
The defense has forced turnovers early, helping the offense put games out of reach early.
The Broncos, among the nation’s best with a 1.25 turnover margin, had two takeaways last week, both during a seven minute span in which Boise State rolled up 24 points. The week before, the defense forced three fumbles and had three interceptions, opportunities the offense cashed in for 30 points.
“They don’t just beat you. They absolutely annihilate you, and we’re going to have to put forth our best effort in all phases and see what happens,” Dooley said.
For Boise State coach Chris Petersen, many things about the Bulldogs are deceiving, and potentially dangerous.
With a few more breaks and fewer mistakes, the Bulldogs could easily be 5-3 instead of 3-5, Petersen said. Last week, Idaho rallied late to edge the Bulldogs 35-34. And the week before, the Bulldogs lost another close one on the road, 23-21 at Utah State.
“If you pay attention to a record, that’s when you run into trouble,” Petersen said. “It seems like every time we go back there the game’s not decided until the fourth quarter.”

Boise State football player Michael Atkinson was arrested early Wednesday on a charge of driving under the influence, according to the Ada County Sheriff’s Office.
Atkinson, a 20-year-old freshman defensive tackle from Windsor, Ontario, also was charged with leaving the scene of an accident. Both charges are misdemeanors.
Atkinson was arrested by Boise City Police and booked at 4:19 a.m. He has been released from jail.
excellent point richard ..... you NEVER heard about Boise State football players getting arrested for DUI.

The big schools biggest fears are coming soon. When kids who are talented don't want to sit on the bench 4 years behind someone. The year will come when 4 or 5 top recuits will say lets go mid major and rip it up. Then win a national title and prove a point. That right even if a mid major would be ohio st. usc texas all in the same year the sos would be weak because of conf. play. so guess where they would end up. #4 because of that reason. they will never let a mid major have a pay day. Boise St. who has a great program do you hear of them getting expelled or picked up for drugs or DUI. I bet if you look at every one of the big school in the last 5 years they have had this issue or cheating to get players. The NCAA should pay to play and put a salary cap on all schools and see what happiens then.

which BCS conference would Boise State join ???? certainly not the Pac 10, Boise State doesnt even come CLOSE to meeting the academic standards required to be a part of the Pac 10. that really only leaves the Big 12 as an option, and they already have 12 teams for christs sakes. on top of that, they could run into the same issues with academics in the Big 12, but i cant speak for that because i dont know the academic standards of the Big 12. the Pac 10 is out of the question, and the Big 12 is an extreme longshot at best. so lets forget about Fantasyland and deal with reality .... and the reality is BCS teams have pretty much fed Boise State their lunch. hell ..... Washington State is 4-0 against Boise State, thats embarrassing.
as for your point about the BCS ..... im not even going to waste my time with that. i have long believed the BCS is the biggest crock of sh*t in the history of college football. i am so disgusted by the BCS that i dont even waste my time watching the bowl games anymore. i am proud to say i did not watch one minute of ANY bowl game last year .... including Florida vs. Oklahoma.

1. mid majors record against big six 18-85
2. no one wants to go to bsu to play fl makes over $500,000 for a home game why go play on blue grass for $100,000
3. bsu ooc games oregon, bowling green, cal-davis, and miami-ohio
4. why does all the mid major fans want to point out a game here and there to tell the world how great they are when the games they point out have nothing to do with the team they are talking about. ie all these bsu fans bringing up the utah vs alabama game.
5. why hire a pr firm when what you need to do is hire an ad that can schedule games
6. school size does not matter commitment does miami is a small school but have how many nat. titles ( go canes )
7. all you playoff fans a football season is 12 games + a bowl a 16 team playoff means adding 4 games 33% to a season
8. football is one of the only sports that bring in money for schools because of the way it is set up why would the schools want to change that?
9 prehaps the best answer to all this is to break div i schools into two div one for the big six and one for the mid majors then let the bcs champ beat the hockey out of the mid major champ on feb 1st it would make for a good winter break lol

You can yammer all you want about who is better, but it's still all talk. Let the games be played and let the players settle it on the field.
By the way, if the BCS conferences are so great, why won't they let two undefeated non-BCS teams into their little post-season club? Gee, are they afraid of being embarrassed twice in one year?

Florida and all the BCS schools have an unfair advantage over the non-BCS schools. Will you admit that?

If Boise State was in a BCS conference, they would be getting the same quality of athletes as any school with a similar won-lost record over the last 10 years. Dozens of kids would love to play for a winner like BSU over a mediocre Washington or Arizona State or Mississippi State or Colorado, and a few would rather play for BSU than a runnerup like Wisconsin or Kansas or Georgia. Most recruits stay in their own geographic are to play. The real winners go where the real winners are, which is why the best programs have kids from all parts of the country. It's why USC, Texas, Alabama, Florida, Ohio State, and Notre Dame can recruit anywhere and everywhere.
Boise State is a class school with a class coach and a class team. Oh, yeah, and I live in Wisconsin and went to school in Arizona.

Boise took wood shop, metal shop, gym, study hall, and then took 1 tough course (Oregon).
They could cry to Harvard that those were the only courses available, and it's just not fair but guess what? It doesn't even matter how smart you are.... you're going to get rejected.
It's Boise's problem, and it's probably too bad.
But there are only so many slots, and just like the guys who take wood shop, they're not worthy.

No way!!!
They weren't half the team Boise was, but that's NOT the point!
Part of getting there is the test of the games that you have to play.
Boise state is taking fundamentals of math while most of the other teams are taking calculus.
Both might get an A, but one of them is a real A, and one of them is a joke.
The Boise schedule IS a joke.

But no way do I think playing Hawaii, LA Tech, etc. should be allowed if they want in to a BCS bowl.
I guess it stinks if they REALLY couldn't travel and play decent teams, but only a handful of people REALLY know the truth on that?

If they played 4 teams on the road from a Pac, ACC, Big 10, big 12, they would have the SAME schedule as every other top 25 team.
They won't do it, so the heck with them.
