Roles reversed for Bedlam rivalry

  • Print

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP)—The Bedlam rivalry has been defined over the past decade by one Oklahoma team pursuing postseason greatness and another trying to stand in the way.

This year, it’s no different—except the teams will be swapping roles.

After years of trying to dethrone mighty Oklahoma, it’s No. 11 Oklahoma State (9-2, 6-1 Big 12) that will be playing for a potential berth in the lucrative Bowl Championship Series when the rivals meet Saturday in Norman. If the chips fall right, OSU could receive an at-large bid for its first BCS appearance.

It will be only the third time a ranked Cowboys team will play the Sooners when Oklahoma is unranked (1945, 1997). The opposite scenario has occurred 38 times.

“We’re not going to expect to be favored down there just because of what we’ve done this year,” Cowboys linebacker Andre Sexton said Monday. “We know that they’re going to get the respect just because of what they’ve done in the past and how well-known their program is. That’s why we need to put ourselves in a situation to take that next step toward gaining that respect by beating them this year.”

Oklahoma State has lost six straight Bedlam games since pulling off back-to-back upsets of top-5 Oklahoma teams at the end of the regular season in 2001 and 2002. The first one knocked the Sooners out of the national championship picture.

This season, Oklahoma (6-5, 4-3) has matched its biggest loss total since Bob Stoops took over as coach in 1999.

“No matter if one team seems like you’re overmatched, there’s always a chance just because of the fact that’s it’s just a huge rivalry and means a lot to everybody,” Cowboys guard Noah Franklin said. “At some point, it comes down to just who wants it more and talent or depth or whatever just kind of goes out the window.”

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said injured quarterback Zac Robinson resumed throwing over the weekend after having his streak of 34 consecutive starts snapped in Thursday’s 31-28 win against Colorado. Robinson had injured his shoulder and head in a violent collision near the end of OSU’s previous game against Texas Tech.

Gundy said Robinson should be at “full speed” in practice and play against the Sooners.

“Will he have some soreness? I would say he’d still be sore, but there’s not anything structural that can affect him,” Gundy said. “It’s just working through soreness.”

Sooners coach Bob Stoops said it wouldn’t affect Oklahoma’s preparation whether it’s Robinson or backup Brandon Weeden who starts because both run the same offensive system. He also downplayed the impact of his team lacking its usual motivation heading into the rivalry game coming off a 41-13 loss at Texas Tech.

“Of the 11 years that we’ve been here, eight or nine of them we’ve been still in a position working toward a Big 12 championship and still having that opportunity coming into this week, so this is different,” Stoops said. “But we still are in a position where we’re trying to improve our situation.

“That’s what our focus will be on is playing the best we can and trying to make our situation better.”

Oklahoma will be without center Ben Habern, who had surgery Saturday after he broke his left leg against Tech and is expected to be out for three months. He’s the third starting offensive lineman to suffer a season-ending injury for the Sooners, who already lost Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford to a shoulder injury and tight end Jermaine Gresham following knee surgery.

Stoops said middle linebacker Ryan Reynolds was also “doubtful” for Saturday’s game with a strained hamstring.

“I don’t think anything’s in the bag and I don’t think anybody really has a right to think that against a team that’s as talented as this that’s maybe gone through some tough things this year,” Franklin said. “They’re still a great team, and it’s going to be a great challenge for us.”

Since losing to Oklahoma State in 2001, the Sooners have won 49 of their last 50 home games and carry a 29-game winning streak on Owen Field.

“Playing Oklahoma, we haven’t beaten them since I’ve been here,” OSU tailback Keith Toston said. “It’s one of those things, since I’ve been here, they’ve kind of been the big brother. We may be the favorites in this game, but we still feel like we’re the little brother.”

bn_mcclung (post 28)------ I think you forgot about a few cowboys there. how can you forget about hunter, lemon and mosley. you guys can only blame your lack of coaching for your losses. we lost 2 of 3 all americans from the most dangerous offense last year. if you really wanna count it,we lost pettigrew because he graduated. don't be mad because our coaches know how to expect the worse and be able to prepare for it in time so if (or when) it comes,we're ready.

Hey! JohnB. I am glad the hate is gone from your heart and your minister has moved away. I am not a okie and I am not a sooner fan. I played college football so I am in touch on how much work these guys put into practicing and playing. To have someone like you slander and make fun their pain is a sign of the corner video store job you have is boring. So I would suggest stop the hate and learn to respect the effort they put forth everyday. One more thing your a idiot..........

Just last saturday before the game, most of your texas and OU fans were saying how OSU should move down in the polls and how OU was going to beat the sh*t out of Tech. HUH, OSU moved to 11 in the BCS and OU moved into obscurity. Now it's all on OSU to beat the Sooners in Norman. that's the season for OU . Used to be if OSU beat the sooners the season was a success. Things have changed, get used to it.
OSU now has the best facilities in the country, the recruiting is MUCH better and getting better with each season. Gundy is a decent coach that doesn't sacrifice his injured quarterback to get a win. The Poles have put up with all sorts of crap this season and yet they are 9-2 and 11th in the country. Cowboys, don't listen to these @#$%'s that always put you down. kick the Sooner ass and those polyps from Norman will go into remission ofr a year. GO POKES!!!!!!!!!!!

25 -jl - My original post questioned both TX and FL running up scores on lesser teams. Most people responded with trash talk and name calling. I don't respond very well to that. Tony C explained that this was not the norm for a Mack Brown team. Tony C pointed out games were Mack had pulled players early. I accepted Tony C's explanation and as is my norm, when wrong, I will apologize.

The second half of your post stated the same thing that my original post stated. It is OK to put your second team into a game after you have secured a big lead and let them score if they can. As Steve Spurrier once said " It is my job to score and your job to stop me. " My only concern was playing first teamers late into the second half.

I indicated in another post that I had received nasty replies to my original post. You asked, "What did you expect after calling TX classless?" I expected someone to come forward, like Tony C did, and point out where I was wrong and give me facts to back up their opinions. To be honest, all I received was trash talk and name calling. My high school coach used to tell us that "You earn respect, it is not handed to you on a silver platter." One reason that I accepted Tony C's explanation is that Tony C has , over time, earned my respect. I will respect anyone that proves their point without involving trash talk and name calling.

Two thoughts on pulling starters / "running up the score" debate. For those that watch the game, pulling the starters and/or running conservative plays to me could be considered more humiliating than whatever the final score might be. It also says to the losing team "You all are soooo bad you don't even match up to our starters so we're going to try and put in players you can handle". On the other side, if you leave your starters in in an admittingly backwards sort of way it could be considered a compliment....along the lines of "We're beating you now, but we know how dangerous of a team you are so we're going to keep playing like it's a tight score". Just because a team wins by 20-30 points doesn't mean they ran up the score. Scores can happen so quickly at the college level, and the emotional level can run really high, so games can get out of reach very quickly. FYI: I'm not defending Texas by any means. Just any team that gets labeled as running up the score.

i dont see how anyone can say that OSU has lost as much from injuries. Yeah losing bryant hurts, i'll give em that, but its not any worse than losing gresham. bradfords only been in for 1 and 1/2 games this year. OSU lost Robinson for 1 game, and it was against Colorado. Ou has lost three o-lineman(not an excuse for how bad they are, they looked horrible with all of the starters still in), broyles for around 2 games, murry for a game. we've basically been playin the 2nd string offense all year. im not one to make excuses(our backups shouldve been better prepared, just pick yourself up and keep on going) but thats just too many losses for an already thin offense.

jl post# 25---------Good post and I agree with you. But, I did explain to michael h that this not a practice of Texas or Mack Brown. I also explained to him why Colt was left in THAT game and he said he understood and even apologized for saying it was classless . He apologized to me and other people that night after I convinced him he was wrong and it took a big man to do that. He is a good poster and a freind of mine. I know you're not really bashing him, but thought maybe you didn't read where I straightened him out and he apologized..........take care and HOOK'EM!!!

Post 12....Jeff B....Not hate man....I just love bashing you Okies....I remember all the sh*t we endured for 5 years when you were riding high....so now that you've had a horrific year it's time to take your medicine....It's called "PAYBACK" little man....you guys suck and you're in total denial and I love it! You're worse than I could have possible hoped for at the beginning of the season...You are so full of sh*t with all the excuses in the world...but it doesn't change the fact that Big Game Bob hasn't won a bowl game in ...how long? You finally realize that you've been outrecruited for years now....It's also hilarious that even though the college rating I was looking at goes up to 50 I still couldn't find you guys....LOL...So like I said yesterday....shut up and take it like a man...you guys have it coming and more! Go Cowboys...let's make em 6-6....LOL

    michael h:

You called Texas classless, and then question why you got nasty replies? ... Come on, just what did you expect? I read that board, and made comments myself ... strictly about the practice of running up scores, and didn't get nasty or even reply directly to you. I think it's fair enough to disagree, but when you call a team classless on that team's board, you opened the door wide open for reprisals from Texas fans. Some got nasty, but every team has fans like that. And every team has some fans who keep it real too.

As for a large score run up ... that's football. Win with grace. Lose with grace. Also, putting up about a 30 point lead early, and then turning loose the 2nd string to play is wise. You know, when a highly rank team plays a weak team, it's expected they win by a large margin. Else they take heat for being weak. If they get ahead by two TDs and pull the starters, they leave the door wide open for a comeback and close game. Why should a team jeopardize themselves to console folks like you? Also, often times when the backup players are put in, they continue to score. What do you expect? ... are they not supposed to try or play well? ... just to suit you and the losing team's egos? That's their chance to play in a real game and show the coaches what they can do. So maybe they add another TD or two to the score. The only lack of class I see is if a sore loser whines about losing or by how many points they lost by. They are better served by closely examining their failures and using them to improve. You know, they are adult's in college, not a group of kindergarteners. Man up.

I pull for both the Sooners and Pokes, so I can live with whichever team wins. I think some people are getting it wrong that the game doesn't mean as much to OU and they'll roll over. They have the longest home winning streak of any team in the nation riding on the game, as well as a chance to redeem how they played against Tech last week. OSU has the most to lose (possible BCS bowl), but they still seem to me to not be as good as their record indicates.

Not sure why the Texas posters are so interested in the game, unless it's to dog-pile on OU and to help out "little brother" OSU with their trash talkin'.

I haven't seen many OU fans complain about the injuries that have hit. OSU has lost one pro prospect, but that is what happens when you aren't smart enough to hang out with the right people. Bryant will be a horse in the pro's. No one has lost the amount of talent as the Sooners this year. You can't tell me that Zac is the calibar of QB as Bradford and Gresham's lose is about like losing Bryant. What has really hurt the Sooners is the line. First of all being very inexperienced and then you lose three of those starters, no one has gone through that type of loses. Stoops didn't have the backups ready to step in after last year and that is his and the coaches fault. This should still be a great game and it wouldn't suprise me if OU wins by 14, but it also wouldn't suprise me if the lost by 14. Enjoy this season OSU, because your big brother will be back next season ready to kick your A$$!!!!!!!!!!!!

michael h.......Tony C.......Don't worry about "poor old Mick", he'll be just fine, as will his Sooners. You know OU will reload and rebound next year, and Texas will be nervous as hell, again, just like OSU has been throughout history of college football. Amazing to me that 'pokes fans can talk smack to Sooner fans, with the record they have against OU(76-16-7). Wonder what it feels like to be victorious in only 20% of the games they've played against the Sooners. But, like most fans, they'll keep talking. I think it'll be a good game, and have no idea how it will turn out, but I don't think it'll be a TxTech type game. I look for it to be a typical rivalry game. The only things in Texas more nervous than their football team is their sheep herds, huh Tony C?.....LOL, buddy. Don't worry about "poor old Mick", guys he'll be just fine. Happy Thanksgiving to you, my good friends, michael h. and Tony C. May all be safe and happy during this wonderful season. Boomer Sooner.

sorry CC (post 18) but okla st has had more adversity this season than ou has.we lost 4 starters in the first few weeks and even had big zak hurt this last game.ou has only had 3 or 4 real players they counted on go down this season.but you are right about ou just using that as an excuse.we still took control of our own destiny and won games without our starting wide reciever, tailback and quarterback.lets not forget about the injuries on defense too.poor orie. weeden is the man for next year.it just seems like no matter what has happened this year,we've always had an answer.

smooth (post 16) you nailed it right on the head about gundy.its really nice to have a coach now that keeps his word. les miles is a great fit for the sec.just ask the refs over there. says he's not leaving and then 2 weeks later is already gone to another school (LSU). gundy should be the coach of the year only because of what he's done with what he's had. he alone was the main point to most of the wins this season and being able to keep his team's heads on straight and keep them from getting discouraged. this could have easily been a 6-6 team(like ou will be) and blame it on the injuries and suspensions and everything else.

For Big 12 fans that root for their conference (in addition to their alma mater), OSU in a BCS bowl (which a win over OU would help accomplish) is good for the conference - but more importantly - great for OSU. By the way - OSU has had just as many injuries/setbacks as OU but Gundy has not thrown it out there like others. Press On, Go Pokes!!!
