Players in title game like BCS system

  • Print

PASADENA, Calif. (AP)—Nick Saban became one of six active coaches to win two national titles when Alabama beat Texas 37-21 in the BCS championship game Thursday night.

He’s also the first to do it at different schools, winning the 2003 title with LSU.

“He’s just a coach that is driven, and he has a vision, and he tries to do his best to instill his characteristics in us,” Alabama tailback Mark Ingram said.

The other active coaches with two titles are Penn State’s Joe Paterno; Arizona State’s Dennis Erickson, who won them at Miami; Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops; Southern California’s Pete Carroll; and Florida’s Urban Meyer.

SEC RULES: With Alabama’s victory Thursday night, three Southeastern Conference teams have combined to win the past four BCS national championships.

The streak began after the 2006 season, when Florida beat Ohio State. LSU beat the Buckeyes the following year, and the Gators knocked off Oklahoma last year. The SEC has won half of the first 12 BCS titles, with the last winner from outside the league being Texas in 2005.

Crimson Tide players weren’t ready to claim that they’ve supplanted the Gators as the dominant team in the nation’s top conference, even after they whipped Tim Tebow and Florida 32-13 in the SEC title game.

“I don’t if we surpassed them, but we beat them,” Ingram said, “and we won the national championship, so now we’re on top.”

ANDERS’ FINALE: Senior linebacker Eryk Anders came to Alabama without much attention, but leaves in a far different situation.

His blindside hit on backup quarterback Garrett Gilbert knocked the ball loose near the Longhorns’ goal line, and Courtney Upshaw recovered to set up Ingram’s 1-yard run that made it a two-score game with 2:01 left.

Saban called the forced fumble “the difference in the game.”

Anders, a San Antonio native, was mostly overlooked in the recruiting process before then-Tide coach Mike Shula came in with a late scholarship offer. He had only 32 tackles in his first three seasons combined but started 10 games as a senior and more than doubled that total.

The final play was the capper on an unlikely success story. He considered transferring after the 2007 season but stuck it out at his father’s urging. Later that night, retired Air Force Capt. Gayle Anders died in his sleep of an apparent heart attack. He was 65.

GROUND HUGGERS: Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy completed 6 of 11 passes for 58 yards. The six completions are the fewest by a winning quarterback in a BCS title game.

The previous low had been seven, by Ohio State’s Craig Krenzel in the Buckeyes’ 31-24 double-overtime victory over Miami in the Fiesta Bowl after the 2002 season.

“You know, we could have thrown the ball more,” Saban said. “It was really in our plan to throw the ball more, but the entire third quarter, we had a lead, and we never had field position, ever, outside the 20-yard line.

“Greg did a good job of managing the game today, got us in the right place.”

GAMBLIN’ MAN: Alabama’s defense bailed Saban out after he took an uncharacteristic gamble on the game’s first possession.

The Longhorns had forced a fourth-and-23 from the Alabama when Saban called a fake. Punter P.J. Fitzgerald’s badly underthrown pass was picked off by Blake Gideon at the 37.

Texas quarterback Colt McCoy left the game with a shoulder injury a few players later, and the Crimson Tide stopped the Longhorns three times inside the 3. Texas ended up kicking a short field goal.

QUOTE, UNQUOTE: “I think they always enjoy dumping on the coach.”—Saban on the Gatorade bath he received at game’s end.

FOURTH AND INCHES: The game drew 94,906 to the Rose Bowl, pushing college football’s overall postseason attendance to 1,769,886, a drop of 708 from a year ago. … Texas fell to 7-1-1 against Alabama. … McCoy finished his career 45-7. He played only five snaps in his final college game. … The Longhorns averaged 40.7 points per game, third in the nation. But in their last two games, against Nebraska and Alabama, the Longhorns scored a total of 34 points.

Where in that article do players say they support the BCS system? What's with the headline?

The game was a snoozer, we really need a playoff.

And, the hit on Colt was not a hard hit, many harder hits occur every game, and it certainly did not warrant a penalty. That's the way things go in football sometimes.

"First of all, as for the hit on Colt, it was not even a hard hit. certainly not by SEC standards"

Really, let's see you go out there and take that hit. You're a knucklehead. That is one of the more moronic statements I've ever read.

I'm a huge Texas fan. But there is nothing more idiotic than the "If Colt McCoy hadn't been knocked out of the game" excuse. Injuries are part of the game. Would I have liked to have seen Colt McCoy finish out his senior year with a big time win in the National Championship game? Of course. Did it happen? Nope. End of story, on to next year. Those of you crying foul have too much ego wrapped up into whether your team wins or loses. You think that if Texas wins that makes you a winner and if Texas loses it makes you a loser. No, tying your identity to your team is what makes you a loser.

First of all, as for the hit on Colt, it was not even a hard hit. certainly not by SEC standards.

Also, as for Saban not showing class by running up the score, some of you who must not have actually been paying attention. During those final few second, Saban was getting a Gatorade shower & freezing his butt off. I'm not at all for running up the score, but I'll be the first to say that Saban, in my non-4 million dollar a year opinion, backs off & goes conservitive too early far too often.

    Roll Tide, Roll

I wish Colt hadn't got hurt, but he did. And his fressman replacement did a good job under the circumstances. UA just has a better defense that most teams have faced, and in the end, that was the difference. Saban didn't run up the score. 37-21 isn't exactly a riot. Strange things happen in sports with only a few seconds remaining in a game. He played it correctly in letting his boys go for another score!

I just saw a report at AL.com that McElroy played the game with cracked ribs suffered in the 3rd Qtr of the Florida game. He was in severe pain and had the ribs extra padded for the Texas game. This would explain why he threw so poorly and the Bama play calling. Also, important to note that the safety for Bama, Mark Barron, was playing up to put pressure on Gilbert. I kept yelling at the TV that Bama should defend the pass and quit trying to pressure the kid on almost every play. He was offered a scholly to Texas as a QB because he could throw. Turns out the kid caught the mismatches with Shipley and the Texas O line gave him time to get open. I think Bama should have kept Barron at safety and defended him just like we did Tebow. I think Bama's defensive calls did not take the kids throwing ability as seriously as they should have based on that obsevation. Oh well, glad to win. I think everyone needs to remember that every season and every game has its own ebb and flow with 3 or 4 plays in many games making the difference. Bama, Texas and every eventual winner experiences this. You just can make yourself go crazy thinking about what could have been. I noticed on replays what appeared to me to be grabbing the jersey of Bama receivers on 2 plays that held them up as they got open but not before the Texas pressure caused McElroy to have to move and by then the receivers who had been open were caught up with and covered up again. Both teams could gripe about missed calls. Fans tend to only see those that were against their team that should have been called.

There are some real idiots on this post. This is my first and last post. As any TRUE Bama & Football fan would say...I sincerely hope Colt is ok and has a great career in NFL. Playing QB, you are going to get dinged, it was a legal hit and an odd occurance. I wish he could have played so we would know for sure but, nonetheless UT D could not stop Bama. Scored 30pts on them (missed 4pts with kicks). UT was not going to score 40+ on Bama D. With Colt in its obviously a better game but hey UT, if Bradford doesn't go down for OU what the Big 12 look like...are you in Pasadena? Guys, dont stress out over whatifs.

On running score up, you are still football idiots. 10pts, 1:30...we run the ball and that is all. Why didn't the #1 rushing Defense stop us if they knew what we were doing? If you kneel, they call timouts, they get the ball back, a score and onside kick and a score...jeeez, the press is rippin Saban for not "putting it away".

I listen to a lot of sports radio and ESPN and I have heard noone make the idiotic comments that are being made here.

UA is unanimous #1......deal with it. And, I can think of no classier program, coaching staff or kids than Texas, Brown (and staff that coached with Saban) and McCoy/Shipley. I wish we could guarantee another game between the the two schools next year.

Nothing against the Alabama players, but Saban appears to have very little class and his prior behavior reinforces this reality. I wish he would just go away or back to the NFL.

Brian: Scoring from the 3 to make it 31-21 with under 3 minutes to go was a must for Sabin & Bama. However, scoring again after intercepting at the 25 or so, when 3 kneel downs would end it, was NO CLASS PERIOD.

What a big letdown/bore. Time for a college football playoff so that you can weed out bad coaches. The shovel pass before half had to be the worst call of the game. I can think of several other teams that would have provided a better game. All this hype, colt gets hurt(perhaps he was injured going into the game???), several poor offensive calls(1st and goal from 3 and can't score, shovel pass). come on, that was the best the number 2 college team had to offer? Can't wait to see the cupcake out of conference schedule of some of these schools next year....At least alabama played va tech and USC played Ohio St.

Hey Bill! Saban was not running up the score. If you were watching the same game as I was then you should have realized that Texas was enjoying a tremendous momentum shift and had the ball with 3 minutes left and had it not been for the blind side hit, could possibly have tied or scored to win! Saban wasn't tanking any chances on losing that game and I don't blame him! Alabama did not look that good but made the plays when they had to and despiste McCoy not playing, Texas was able to move the ball in the second half and Saban realized that.

Bill. Can't agree with you more. Bama intercepts (at what the 25 or 30) with a minute and a half to go and leading 31-21. Three kneel downs and the game is over - but NO he has to score again and run up the score. Poor Poor sportsmanship to rub it in. SABAN HAS NO CLASS. PERIOD.

Nick Saban showed how much class he really has by running up the scoring after leading by 10, ball on the opp 3 yrd line, with 1:00 left. Words can't describe how much of a douche bag this guy is. I hope all you alabama faithful don't eat crow when you try to defend this d-bag, b/c he's just going to lie and tell you he's going to stay forever and then leave you for something better/different. He's already done it 3 times!!!!!!

Randy - HOMER - The hit was just a hard clean hit. You need to learn to be a good loser. Don't make excuses, I didn't hear any coming from the TX team.

jl - As I stated, when Colt went down, Bama had no game plan to defense the new QB. Did it hurt TX more? Sure it did. But that my friend is football. Remember when TX knocked OKL QB Bradford out of their game in the first quarter? Okl only lost that game by a few points, Would Okl have beaten TX if Bradford had not gotton hurt? Again, that is the nature of the game.

Bottom line - Alabama only had 13 more yards total offense than Texas! If they had not tackled McCoy with an illegal lead with the helmet hit.....they could not have even remotely stayed with Texas!!!

Oh, and yeah, Harry, Colt McCoy would fake being injured so he wouldn't have to play in the biggest game of his college career so:

    1) Alabama could win because everybody in the BCS wants Alabama to win

    and

    2) he didn't want to hurt his NFL chances

What an idiot. As far as "he didn't get hit that hard..." if you get hit by a 300+ pound defensive end who is running and diving at you, I'm fairly certain you'll feel that.

As far as you being from Missouri so you have to be shown, apparently you need to be shown with picture books since you can't spell "a" without some help.
