No. 2 Alabama’s defense smothering opponents

  • Print

OXFORD, Miss. (AP)—Alabama’s plan for containing Mississippi quarterback Jevan Snead was pretty simple: Hit him and hit him hard.

“We hit their quarterback just about every time in the first half and I think it affected him,” coach Nick Saban said.

Did it ever.

The game was effectively over by halftime after the second-ranked Crimson Tide rocked the Rebels’ leader and Alabama (6-0, 4-0 Southeastern Conference) wiped away any lingering questions about performing against a top offense.

Snead was mentioned in the same sentence as guys like Tebow and McCoy by Heisman Trophy handicappers before the season started. A rough start washed away some of that luster, but Alabama took the junior seriously after watching him rally the Rebels from far behind last season in ‘Bama’s 24-20 win in Tuscaloosa.

“You could tell by some of the passes he was throwing” that Alabama’s defense rattled Snead, said Alabama linebacker Rolando McClain, one of four players to intercept a pass from Snead on Saturday. “We know what type of quarterback he is and what he is capable of. We were trying to get some hits on him and get him rattled. We could tell the difference in passing decision making.”

Alabama snapped Snead’s streak of 13 straight games with a touchdown pass and held the Rebels to the lowest point total in the series since a shutout in 1996.

The Rebels managed just 19 yards of total offense in the first half and one first down before finishing with 212 total yards.

“This is the fastest defense if you went from 1-11 (players),” Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt said. “From corners to safeties to linebackers to defensive linemen, this is the best I’ve seen.”

The Crimson Tide has forced nine turnovers in two weeks after taking just four from its first four opponents. Alabama has forced at least one turnover a game in 28 of 33 games under Saban, averaging 1.8 per contest in that span.

Alabama just plain roughed up Ole Miss at times, twice snatching interceptions out of the hands of receivers.

With top-ranked Florida knocking off then-No. 4 LSU and then-No. 17 Auburn losing to Arkansas, a once wide-open SEC West is now Alabama’s to take.

“Can we stay focused on doing the things that we need to do to improve, to be as good as we can be?” Saban asked. “We cannot get complacent because that is the key to the drill. The passion to want to do it, the passion to stay with it, the passion to continue to go through the grind, and there are numerous teams every week that have a difficult time with that and don’t play well.”

While the Crimson Tide was able to answer some questions, the Rebels were left with more to sort through.

Snead continued to struggle, tying his career high for interceptions a week after throwing three in a win over Vanderbilt.

He was badly out of sync against Alabama, missing dump passes, forgetting his footwork at times and throwing into coverage occasionally.

Yet Nutt was careful to point out that the junior is not responsible for all of his turnovers. Alabama defenders twice took apparent catches away from wide receivers for interceptions and the pressure was overwhelming at times. There was also a handful of drops.

“I think he knows and he’ll be the first to tell you that he can play better,” Nutt said. “You just don’t want to turn it over. That’s been our biggest problem.”

Nutt rebuffed reporters’ questions about an offensive regression starting with the 16-10 loss to South Carolina. He noted Saturday’s opponent is known for making offenses look inept.

“We ran into a real wall today,” he said.

Utah held down Alabama pretty well in the Sugar Bowl last year. And the Sun Belt team held down Alabama the year before that.

The NCAA held down Alabama a couple of times recently when it put Alabama on probation.

First of all, rick z, you are an idiot. You apparently have no knowledge of alabama football whatsoever. Second, i agree with delta. Mcelroy does often try to force double or triple teamed passes to julio, but i think that also has a lot to do with the first year starter playing on the road. Experience will help him to calm down and make better decisions. Finally, i agree with no1bamaldsmom@..., ole miss has an outstanding defense, especially in the red zone. You are a pretty spectacular team when you can hold alabama to one offensive touchdown.

My only criticism of Alabama is at the QB position. McElroy tends to stare his receivers down without eye faking the defense off. Safeties will sit back, watch his eyes, and pick the ball off. Other than this Alabama is strong on offense and defense. I don't see any team in SEC or the nation that can go toe-to-toe with Alabama in 60 minutes. Alabama is like a boxer in a ring. They body punch the entire 60 minutes.

I agree with you Delta. He's got these other good runners that he could throw the ball to but he wants to throw it to Julio even if he is covered up. Richardson does a great job when he gets a chance to run the ball. The others can be wide open but he throws it to Julio like he is the only one out there. RTR!!!!!

Alabama might have history, but the recent history includes getting demolished by Utah and losing to a Sun Belt team.

rick z, you are a spaz.

History hasn't been kind to you my man because you have been unable to learn any.

Okay so Alabama lost to 6 teams two years ago, not just a sunbelt team. Yes Alabama lost to a fine Utah team last year after a paper thin OL depth chart got thinner when the 2nd rated OL in the draft couldn't go and then his replacement got injured. Utah took Bama to the woodshed. Maybe Utah should have been playing Florida for the National Championship instead of Oklahoma. They were a very fine football team.

    That was last year.

Step up and tell us who your team is. Let's hope the SEC's best team can meet your team in a bowl, or maybe your team can hope to do no better than to face the SEC's 6th or 7th best team in the Poulan Weedeater Bowl.

BTW, google the University of Alabama, they've made more history than all but 2 or 3 programs since college football has been a sport.

Alabama was stomped by Utah in the Sugar Bowl last season. The year before, Alabama lost to a Sun Belt team.

SEC fans are retards. They choose to ignore these facts, likely because history has not been kind to them.

I played at ALABAMA mid to late 80's and i've seen some good defensive football teams. This team has to be ranked right there with the 92' team. i enjoy watching them play.

McElroy really needs to stop forcing the ball to Julio! Let him eat up double and triple teams and spread the ball around a little more. Julio is a fierce blocker in the running game, something he doesn't get enough credit for. Bama needs to get better in the red zone or they're gonna get beat. Bama still has some kinks to work out, but this team gets better every week! South Carolina is gonna bring their A-game this Saturday. Let's hope Bama doesn't relax this week. RTR!

who cares? Alabama is very good, but at this point rankings do not matter and 6 wins only means you are bowl elligible, nothing more. Alabama has to beat a ranked s. carolina team this week, thats all i am worried about, and i bet all that saban and the team are worried about!

Say what you will about how good Alabama is all around, but I was not that impressed. They rattled Snead to force those bad throws - some of them maybe, but not all. Personally I didn't think Snead was that good last year and this year it really shows, but thats just me. I also will refuse to watch them on TV or listen to them on the radio as long as #4 is playing.

As far as Alabama is concerned though - this last part of the season will show what they really have to offer. Personally I see them losing 2 games for sure - maybe 3. If they can make it through unscathed - then they deserve to play for the Championship.

Well as usual Bama comes on strong and could be a contender for the top spot, glad to see Texas drop, so hopefully no bad omens hit the tide and the finish on a good year and possible top spot. Well thanks again.

A very good defensive performance. The offense has to do a better job in the redzone, and special teams wasn't all that special (see kickoff coverage). This team has to continue to strive to get better each week, if it can stay focused then good things can happen.....Bama is 1/2 way through the season and the meat of their schedule is yet to come, lets hope they continue to get better and don't get caught looking ahead.

I recall back in '92 one of the Tide's players was asked to comment on a Miami player's statement that Alabama couldn't compete with them because Alabama is 'one dimensional', referring to the outstanding defense with just enough offense to win all their regular season games. The Tide player replied 'sometimes one dimension is all you need'. The result was a great win over Miami (with a Heisman Trophy winner at QB) for the National Championship.

This year's defense may be as good as the 92' team. I think the offense is better. Will they win out and play the Gators in Atanta? Gonna be intersting to watch.
