Late TD lifts GT past Clemson for ACC championship

  • Print

TAMPA, Fla. (AP)—Two years into his rebuilding job at Georgia Tech, Paul Johnson has the Yellow Jackets exactly where he had hoped.

Atlantic Coast Conference champions and headed to a BCS bowl for the first time.

Jonathan Dwyer’s 15-yard touchdown run with 1:20 remaining capped a long winning drive and gave the 12th-ranked Yellow Jackets a 39-34 victory over No. 25 Clemson in Saturday night’s ACC championship game.

Josh Nesbitt threw a 70-yard TD pass to DeMaryius Thomas and Scott Blair kicked a title game-record four field goals to help the Yellow Jackets (11-2) win the crown—Tech’s first since sharing it with Florida State in 1998—in their second season under Johnson.

Next up is a trip to the Orange Bowl for the Yellow Jackets’ first major postseason appearance since the 1966 season, when they also made the trek to Miami.

“When we took the job, this is the reason we took it—to have a chance to compete and go to BCS bowl games,” said Johnson, who won two Division I-AA national titles at Georgia Southern and also had a successful stint at Navy before taking over at Tech.

ACC player of the year C.J. Spiller rushed for 233 yards and four touchdowns for Clemson (8-5), which has lost two straight following a six-game winning streak that revived its season after a slow start.

“A lot of people had us written off, but we stayed together,” Spiller said. “You never want to come up short, but those guys just made the extra play to win.”

The Tigers are eager to learn where their first full season under coach Dabo Swinney will end.

“We had the second-best record in the league. There is a (bowl) pecking order and I would hope we will be where we’ll supposed to be,” Swinney said.

Baker, the star of Georgia Tech’s three-point victory over Clemson during the regular season, kicked field goals of 48, 49, 28 and 40 yards. Dwyer ran for two TDs and Nesbitt ran for one for the Yellow Jackets, who rushed for 333 yards.

Spiller’s scoring plays covered 3, 41, 36 and 9 yards, the latter trimming a 13-point deficit to 33-27 with 12 minutes remaining. His longest run of the night, a 54-yarder to the Georgia Tech 9, put him over 200 yards and set up Andre Ellington’s 1-yard run that put the Tigers ahead 34-33 with 6:11 left.

Georgia Tech marched 86 yards in 13 plays to regain the lead. Dwyer finished with 110 yards on 24 carries. Nesbitt, a distant second to Spiller for conference player of the year, rushed for 103 yards on 22 attempts.

“There’s no way that we’re going to lay down and give up,” Dwyer said. “Everybody was boosting everybody up, telling each other we’re going to score.”

The teams combined for 883 yards of total offense, including 656 on the ground. Neither team punted.

“It was a shootout, but unfortunately we just couldn’t get the ball enough,” Swinney said.

“It’s a painful experience and I hope we’ll grow and learn from this. We’ve got a lot of juniors, sophomores and freshmen on this team and hopefully they will understand what it’s all about.”

Spiller, an all-purpose threat from Lake Butler, Fla., hiked his season rushing total to 1,145 yards. He’s scored a Clemson single-season record 20 touchdowns—11 rushing, four receiving and five on kick returns.

The Yellow Jackets and Tigers were among the hottest teams in the country before stumbling against instate rivals Georgia and South Carolina to close the regular season.

Johnson and Swinney, however, scoffed at the notion that the losses to a couple of middle of the pack SEC teams took some of the luster off a matchup between the ACC’s highest scoring teams.

The title game appearance was the second for Georgia Tech, which failed to score a touchdown in a 9-6 loss to Wake Forest in 2006, and now has its first outright ACC championship since 1990—the year before Clemson won the most recent of its league-record 13 crowns.

“We’ve come a long way in one year,” said Swinney, who replaced Tommy Bowden on Oct. 13, 2008 and guided the Tigers in the final seven games of last season.

“This is where Clemson is supposed to be. This is our standard. This is our expectation,” Swinney added. “So, hopefully we can grow from this.”

    22. Posted by rick z - And just what sports would all those ACC titles be in? Bowling, marble-shooting, knitting?! Certainly NOT football! Since Miami didn't join the ACC until 2004 you can't count all their Championships. FSU joined in 1991 and they do have two National championships (1993 & 1999) but that's all. The ACC has 5 National Championships in football since 1953. The SEC has 17 and soon to be 18!

rick z - people have asked you repeatedly just who do you root for in football? Or, do you just get on here to make derogatory remarks about people in the South? You are truly a moron!!

DAMNIT!!!! Never thought I would evolve into a Clemson fan that expects to lose....but after 10-15 years of losing close games, I'm used to it. I'm proud of the players for fighting and especially feel priviledged to watch CJ SPILLER for 4 years. Dabo was out-coached but Johnson does that to many coaches. The SEC has been and will remain the dominate conferencewhich is fine....true football fans have to love the style of ball they play. I just hope Clemson can get back to being competitive like in the 80-early 90's. SPILLER SHOULD BE ON STAGE FOR THE HEISMAN PRESENTATION.

    Also,
Clemson's coach is not a rookie...maybe a rookie Head coach....but he is not a Rookie...He is from Alabama...and he was the Assistant Coach @ Clemson before taking over as Head Coach. The SEC is not the top conference and neither is the ACC....in fact no conference is...as stated...it is the teams that makes the conference what it is, and each team has its own strengths and weaknesses. I agree that the Conference stuff is a buch of bull, but we have to have the conferences to separate all the teams in divisions, etc. I also agree that we should have some kind of playoff system, because the BCS does not make since and is not been fair in its choices top teams....we have undeafeated teams who end up winning their bowl games, but they were not playing for the championship game because they were not ranked #1 or #2.

If the SEC was the top conference, then why did they only have 3 teams in the AP Poll (ACC 4-now probably 3 after Clemsons lost to GT), 3 teams in USA today Poll (same for SEC), and 3 Teams standing in the BCS Poll (same as ACC). this does not prove either Conference is a top conference.

By the way, the ACC was not the only conference who did not have a champioship game between the conference divisions....there are still conferences who have shared titles...it was not until the ACC conference gained more teams and they separated into Divisions that they had a championship game......I still hear about teams sharing conference titles and I thought that had faded away...apparently not.

To say that the SEC is the top conference contradicts one believing that one should pick a team and cheer for them....and also means that you are a fan of a conference, not a team. The conferences exist to create the rivalry between teams and other conferences.....so this will always bne there.

As stated...Good luck to all the teams out there in their bowls games, etc.

Some people are forgetting that Georgia Tech also owns 5 SEC championships for when they were a part of the SEC (of course that was back in the days, but still). Every conference has their ups and downs, for goodness sake....App State beat Michigan (2005) and App state is a FCS (1-AA) school and part of the Southern Conference.

I remember the days of Notre Dame and the Hurricanes...i also remember when Michigan was up there also, but all these teams are having their ups and downs, but yet no one is really talking about those teams. This is football and it does not matter which conference you are...in some cases it does, but in all reality....this is college football and anything can happen. there will always be the conference rivals and rivals against conference and do not forget the in state rivals (I remember when Florida State and Florida were neck to neck with each other).

Also, Paul Johnson is a 2nd year head coach (by the way)for Georgia Tech, and he was once under a wing of a great football coach Erk Russell (Coach of Georgia Southern (1981-1989) of 1-AA football. Erk was the defensive coordinator for UGA, won a National Championship in 1980 with Vince Dooley, and then move on to Georgia Southern where he won 3 National 1-AA Championships (to which Paul Johnson served as Defensive Linebacker Coordinator and then later Offensive Coach). Paul Johnson has also won several Coaches of the year awards and has turned around several colleges football programs.

As stated, it does not matter which conference you are in, but it matters what kind of team you are. Rivalries are what fire up the teams (some more than others), but it can also bring down a team, especially when they become too full of themselves causing a change in the outcome of the game...most of the time a lost. sometimes coaches make mistakes on which play (this goes for any conference, including the ACC and SEC) and that causes problems also.

I saw th game last night, and saw the penalty that gave Clemson the points they need to eventually take the lead, if that had not been a penalty....if would have been a turnover....GT also did not make the 4 down conversion, therefore a turnover for them, and another touchdown for Clemson, but GT turned around and answered wiith a drive and made the touchdown, then turned around and held Clemson off. this was a good game between both teams and both teams played very well.

Everyone need to stop this conference stuff, and look at the teams. I know people who are questioning why Alabama and Florida were in the top positions (because they consider the SEC a powderpuff conference just like they do the ACC). It is funny how back in the days before Miami Hurricanes came to the ACC, that they always seemed to be in the top 5 teams at the end of the year (of course this was before the BCS) in the ranking whether they had an awesome season or a mediocre season, and the same for Notre Dame. These 2 teams were always in the top 5 during the 80's (AP poll). Do not get me wrong....Miami had a very good team and so did Notre Dame, but I have always had questions on how fare the Polls were. you would think a team that was undefeated would rank above a team that had 1 lost...in many cases...no that is not the answer and the team with one lost is ranked higher than a team with no losses.

I wish the best of luck to Alabama and to all the teams from the SEC and ACC who will be representing the South in the bowl games whether it be BCS or just a regular bowl game.....GOOD luck to all!!!!!! May the best teams win!!!!!!

CJ Spiller almost singlehandedly won it. Overall, Ga. Tech had more dependable offensive execution, even though they had slightly less athletic ability, overall. All in all, it was a great game, and Ga. Tech avoided turnovers. Seriously, I would put those two teams against any team in the SEC, in a meaningful game, and it would be a toss up.
    CJ for Heisman.

a diploma has nothing to do with why a person should/shouldnt root for a conference. ultimately when the cream of the conference does well the conference benefits. the success of bama and florida has earned them extra media attention, extra prime time national televised kickoffs, and the inside track to the big time bowls. the extra media attention is free recruiting. now they hardly have to recruit them bc many of them what to b a part of those programs. bama and fla can now afford to pass on a 3 star bc they have 4 and 5 star recruits. now those 3 stars will commit to surrounding schools, i.e. other SEC schools and strengthen their program so now u would have a conference with 4 or 5 of its teams in the top 10....wait i think the SEC has done that already. therefore those 2 teams help attract better quality players to the other schools as well. this in turn would of course give conference games more competition and elevate the level of play. these teams r gd bc the conference is strong. lastly, if the conference does well then the teams playing in the conference championship will probably b guaranteed a bcs bowl which means more money for everybody

All this conference talks is BS. Who really Cares? Clemson was a team en route to a horrible season, they turned it around. Rookie QB, Rookie Head Coach, Rookie Off. Coor. To Get 8 wins so far was a lot more than what folks thought after the Maryland game.

In-state games are funny, to watch that is. Clemson has Owned Carolina since the teams started to play football. That win was only Carolina's 12th in 40 years against Clemson, and only the third at Williams-Brice since 1980. But no one talks about those facts. Carolina, and their fans have no goals above beating Clemson, because they can not hang in with the SEC teams. Ga Tech has not done as well against GA. but gives them a good game.

SEC is the top conference. This ACC Championship game has meaning. It's funny just a few years ago SEC Fans (funny to pull for an entire conference) said the ACC is crap because there was no championship game. College football as a whole is out of control. TOO MANY BOWL GAMES. It's like giving a the fat kids a trophy even though they did not play.

Find a team, be a fan of the team, not some d.a.m.n conference. I have never seem a Diploma from a Conference.

I love it when the SEC fans come in bragging about out of conference schedule wins. To all the SEC fans who actually think playing Division II or as i should say high school teams for OOC games means anything to the true fans of college football get real. At least the other conferences had teams that had balls and were willing to play real football games instead of games they were guaranteed to be able to run the score up and then brag about having the "best defenses" in the country.

Only way anyone will ever be able to say that their conference is the best is to actually have a real playoff system. This bowl game stuff and the National Championship is all a joke and means nothing anymore due to computers actually picking teams who play patsies outside of conference then having patsies for half the conference in itself.

ok nebraska DID lose to Virginia Tech and theyre playing in their conference championship. Pitt is playing for their conference championship too and they lost to NC state. However, WHO are they playing? Texas and Cincy, respectively. 2 UNDEFEATED teams. The huskers and panthers are playing teams that could possibly hoist they bcs championship trophy. Georgia Tech and Clemson are in an awful conference. Just bc some of ur teams have beat teams from other bcs conferences doesnt mean anything when measured up against the agonizingly mediocre (at best) conference that is the ACC. They should feel as good about playing for a conf. championship and bcs berth as a .500 team should b for playing in a bowl period. now they still have the right to savor the moment but dont try to defend a crappy conference, especially by trying to bring down other conference teams. whichever team wins the ACC championship and goes bcs bowling betta pray that they r matched up against another bcs school bc it would REALLY look bad on the ACC when their conf. champ gets steamrolled by a boise state or a TCU.
