Syracuse WR Williams quits team

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP)—Syracuse coach Doug Marrone said goodbye to his star receiver and defended his starting quarterback Monday.

Mike Williams, the Big East’s leading receiver, quit the team. He had 49 catches for 746 yards and six touchdowns.

But at his weekly news conference, Marrone focused first on quarterback Greg Paulus. The former Duke point guard returned home to play football this season, but was booed Saturday during a 28-7 loss to Cincinnati at the Carrier Dome.

“I’ve never seen an athlete at any level, including the NFL, work as hard mentally and physically as Greg has worked since he’s joined us here,” Marrone said. “Really, what he’s accomplished is extraordinary. Maybe he can’t be fully appreciated because most don’t know just how difficult it is to play quarterback at a Division I program.”

Marrone said he felt Paulus was a victim of his own success. Paulus, who’s only here for this one remaining year of athletic eligibility, nearly led Syracuse to an upset of Minnesota in the season-opener at home. He threw for 167 yards and one touchdown, but his lone turnover of the game, an interception in overtime, allowed the Gophers to escape with a victory.

Two weeks later, Paulus scored on a 10-yard run and threw for 346 yards (the sixth-highest total in school history) and two TDs in leading Syracuse to a comeback win over Northwestern. But in Syracuse’s first two Big East games, he threw six interceptions and had another in the second quarter against the Bearcats, in the end zone with the Orange trailing 14-7.

That prompted a cascade of boos from the fans, who cheered every time backup Ryan Nassib was inserted.

Marrone said he wasn’t aware of the negative reaction until he was told about it long after the game had ended. He said he had not yet discussed it with Paulus, though he tried to reach him by phone.

“We’ve seen him make great plays and great decisions, and we have come to expect that from him every time,” Marrone said. “But football is a team game. People don’t know when an offensive lineman misses a block or a receiver runs the wrong route. They only see the decisions that Greg makes.

“I understand that (booing) is a part of sports, but Greg is one of us. He grew up here. He came back to do something that’s never been done before and has poured every ounce of his body and soul into that task.”

Williams was Syracuse’s most talented player. He has all the physical traits coaches covet in a receiver—size (6-foot-2 and 210 pounds), speed, amazing leaping ability, sure hands.

Two years ago, Williams established a Syracuse record with touchdown receptions in nine straight games, then was suspended in June 2008 for violating the university’s academic integrity policy and missed all of last season.

Williams re-enrolled in January, returned to the team for spring practice, and picked up where he left off. He caught a scoring pass against Minnesota to extend his streak to 10 games before being kept off the board at Penn State.

His 20 career TD catches ties Marvin Harrison for second at Syracuse, two off Rob Moore’s school record. Williams also was named recently as one of 10 finalists for the Biletnikoff Award, presented to the nation’s top wide receiver.

Marrone said he had not yet made a formal announcement to the team about Williams but suspected many players had already heard the news.

“He walked up to me and voluntarily took himself off the team. That’s it,” Marrone said, declining to elaborate. “I’m not going to discuss the conversation from my end.”

In an interview last month, Williams, a senior, said he fully expected to return for his final year of eligibility in 2010.

“I’m really looking forward to coming back,” Williams said. “I’m not even going through that process right now of thinking about leaving (for the NFL). It’ll be good for me because I sat out a year. All the problems I went through and stuff when I sat out, I feel like I really have to come back.”

Penn State stopped Williams. Kept him "off the board." Seems PSU has a knack for doing that. Great "D". That's what it's all about.

I see everyone arguing going back and forth without knowing the reason why the young man quit. WILLIAMS never said he was quiting because of Paulus. The Author of this article attempted to link WILLIAMS quiting to Paulus but like I just stated Williams nor his coach said he was quiting because of Paulus. For all we know Williams could have some serious of the field problems.

to jroy... most bloggers in the sports section comment on journalistic buffoonery instead of adding some insight of their own that may somehow give credence to the article. you are guilty!!! I, on the other hand, gave graphic discription that may give the average reader insight. What the athletes in question may be going through, that may infuence their decision making. The WR, obviously has some academic problems that as in descride in my afforementioned commentary, will be in conflict. He is a senior, and any1 who has been to college knows these months are crucial. As someone has mentioned, SYR's season is essentially over. As for Greg P, he may not be a great QB(college backup at best), he does work hard. He also puts it all on the field. He's also a great kid off the field. So to the jroys out there, the clue is, this is the sports section with articles abuot athletes and there teams. commentary should have INSIGHT. if u have none, perhaps I can interest you in TMZ

Meh. I hate this "They booed him." I have had season tickets for 10 years. I never miss a game. No one. And I repeat, no one in the dome boos the PLAYERS! If we did, wouldn't we have heard at least 1 boo when the defense was on the field? (in all 10 years????) Nope.

So, what are we booing. We are booing Coach (Marrone/ Pasqualoni/ Robinson)'s choice to play a certain player over another. Or call a bonehead play like "Up the middle" on every 1st down.

the fact that the receiver quit says it all. the coach plays a 1 and gone former basketball player at QB instead of using this year to develop at young QB, why would anyone want to play for his team. THIS IS A JOKE AND A SHAME AND SPEAKS LOUDLY TO RECRUITS THAT THE COACH DOESN'T KNOW WHAT HE IS DOING.

This isn't even coherent. You don't name the article about one guy, mention him once, and then take the remainder of the article and talk about a different guy.

Well, this article is just a little confusing to say the least! The title of the article is "Syracuse WR Williams quits team" but the writer then goes into a defensive tirade about their QB! First of all, Paulus should have stayed at Duke and stuck with basketball! From the article and the fact that Williams says he will be back in 2010, I am assuming that the problem is between Williams and Paulus though the writer doesn't specify. Perhaps Williams felt that Paulus wasn't throwing him the ball enough? The fact is, Williams shows a lack of character by bailing out on his team. The Orange have 4 games left and he should ride out the rest of the season with his team mates. His Coach should have told him that if you quit now, don't bother coming back next year!!

Here's a "wild thought" KJ: why don't you go look on the roster listed for Syracuse on Yahoo! sports?
He's a senior, still listed on the roster. It's Cameron Dantley, btw.

What happened to Camron Dantley? Is he injuried are something? That guy looked great against Notre Dame last year.

What happen to Camron Dantley? Isn't he the QB that beat Notre Dame and almost beat West Virginia last year? I thought he was looking pretty good. He seems like the type that over achieves in game situations. But apparently Syracuse is doing so well this year that they don't need him. The forgotten one.

#31. What is your point? What is your comment in reference to? The article is about a guy quitting and about a basketball player trying to play QB. Somebody else referred to the eye gouging incident. I'm still trying to figure out how your comment fits in. It seems so random unless I am missing something.

Wow. This IS a sloppy article. Why not wait and write the article until you get all the information? So the WR quit the team. I learned that from the title. The article was more about the Paulus kid. You have the big title to draw the readers in, but there's no real 'scoop' or meat to this article. You either need to change the title next time or get your content to support your title. I'd rate this article a flimsy 1 star out of 5, and that's being generous.

I HOPE the NFL do not draft him - he is a LOSER - he cannot read or write - so he was going to fluck out again - this is just another ghetto punk who will carry a gun because he is weak - pretend he is hip hop but actually a flop - just a quiter - he will not make it in the NFL with that attitude...
LEARN TO RAED AND WRITE punk...

Was this article about the QB or the WR? Why did he quit and what does the QB have to do with him quitting. It was like two articles mashed together. Bad writing.

4 most of a football player's life, there's training, training, and more training your body to withstand constant pain, constant beatings, the body is going through the most unimaginable scrutiny the average man will never know. All this is only the training. Then on game day these footballers try to prove who's body(in an 11 man effort) will take the most pain for 60 mins. of stop and go rushes. Again the average man will never know. It's is brutal, barbaric, insane. All for the love of entertaining those who will never know. So, for you guys who will never know and yet judge on something you will never know. Enjoy that life, when these MEN, end this barbaric, and brutal career choice, most will live in unimaginable pain for the rest of their lives. Some won't even enjoy the fruits of this brutal labor(their wives will though). So judge on. Nice to be ignorant, isn't it?
