Spurrier says he took Tebow omission too seriously

  • Print

BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. (AP)—Steve Spurrier has more regrets over his all-Southeastern Conference ballot: That he took his omission of Florida’s Tim Tebow from the first team so seriously and that he involved one of his most trusted staffers.

The South Carolina coach said Thursday he made way too big a deal of not voting for the Heisman Trophy winning quarterback at the Southeastern Conference’s annual media gathering. Spurrier also made it clear he took responsibility for the incident and that his director of football operations, Jamie Speronis, was not to blame.

“We got into too much detail,” Spurrier said after his annual summer golf outing. “We should not have gotten Jamie Speronis involved at all because he does a heck of a job as director of football operations. He’s an important, key guy.”

Spurrier’s admission was perhaps the denouement to the biggest whodunit at SEC gathering in Hoover, Ala. The media had asked each league coach if they were the one who failed to place Tebow, who led the Gators to a national championship last fall, on the preseason first team.

Finally, Spurrier admitted the oversight, offering how sick he was when he realized he hadn’t put his fellow Gator Heisman Trophy winner as his No. 1 choice. Spurrier then detailed what happened, including why Speronis had gone with Mississippi quarterback Jevan Snead over Tebow.

Spurrier called Tebow to apologize and had the SEC redo his ballot to include the Florida star as his choice.

“Sometimes, you look back and say, ‘Why did we give them too much detail?”’ Spurrier said. “It was an oversight, first list we sent in, it was my fault, and then we corrected it. That’s all we needed to say.”

Speronis has been Spurrier’s director of football operations at South Carolina, with the Washington Redskins and at Florida. The two have been together 18 seasons.

Spurrier’s SEC explanation put the affable right-hand-man in the spotlight. “I hope he didn’t get too much grief,” Spurrier said.

South Carolina’s cross country coach, Stan Rosenthal, said when he returned from Serbia a person at the airport saw his Gamecock shirt and mentioned how Spurrier “was in the news again” over Tebow.

South Carolina has lost its past three games to Florida since Tebow was there. The Gamecocks get one last chance against him at Williams-Brice Stadium on Nov. 14.

Spurrier said he wishes he hadn’t made his goof bigger than it was. “We made way too big a deal out of it,” he said. “I wish I could handle it over, but can’t so just say that and move on. Don’t need to talk about that anymore.”

Spurrier has always made gaffs like this. This one is not something new. As a Gator he will always be loved and respected for what he did for the UF program in the 90s. However, we have a new Coach that will take us even farther! It's great playing the Game@#$% every year with ol SOS on the sidelines. You know for damn sure that he will give us all that he's got every year. MAkes for a great matchup year in and out. Just another reason why the SEC rules in college football!

Say what you want about Tebow. Regardless, ANY College Football Coach would want him on their Team! That's a given. His integrity and leadership qualities alone make him outstanding. Throw in the bonus of being 6'5", 235 lbs with the attitude of a lineman and an arm and you've got the perfect recipe for success! Who knows if Tim will succeed in the NFL... Many don't. I hope he does, we'll see...

Angry Dad.....I agree with you on Tebow. I am a gator hater but I will give him his dues. If I were the person in charge of drafting for a pro team, there is no question I would take him in the first round. He is a winner! His character is unquestionable. He is coachible! He is smart! He never gives up and he hates to loose. The only thing that can stop him is himself. Or possibly a coach that doesn't give him a chance. But, he may forgo pro ball and go strait to heaven.

Dawg, Thanks. Huck Fynn, there are some people on this earth that think the world of Tebow and have never met him. there are some who dislike him with so much intensity that they cannot see the person behind the TV personna, and the athletics he displays on the field. Personally, I don't know wether he would be a good NFL QB or not. At this point, hes is a very good QB in the system he is in, and with the coaching he is receiving. I was watching some high school players at the Florida Elite lineman camp in mid July, and one of the things that I heard coming out of most of the coaches there was the term "coachability" is a player coachable? Tebow is, and is humble enough to remain that way should he choose to enter the NFL. I have spoken with Tim on a couple of occasions, and his father. Both are very humble men. I like Tebow on a personal level as someone that I would allow my son to hang out with. I hope everyone has a great day, even Joseph.

Angry ..... i really havent seen him play so i dont know that much about him other than the hype. that being said though .... it is INSANE to throw that kind of guaranteed money at a guy who has never taken a single snap in the NFL ..... i dont give a crap if its a Joe Montana clone. absolutely insane. what if Stafford tears his knee apart in preseason and ends up never playing in a single game ? what was it ..... something like 42 mil guaranteed ? 42 million, and never takes a snap. this is the NFL ..... there have been more #1 overall pick busts than there have been hits .... especially at QB. not even just #1 ... look at other "cant miss" QBs taken VERY early in the draft that were complete failures. Leaf, Harrington, Akili Smith, Young is heading that direction, Shuler, Vick (even before prison), Couch, McNown, Ware, Mirer, Klingler, Thompson, Carr ........... INSANE to give an unproven player that kind of guaranteed money when you could throw that money and get a PROVEN QB ..... pretty much any damned QB they want.

i dont like or dislike the Lions or Stafford ..... but i hope he is a complete bust ...... something has to stop this madness ..... and when teams start to flush 40 million on unproven players .... the money will stop flowing.

oh ..... how could i forget JaMarcus Russell ???? what a pile of crap that guy is ...... Al Davis needs to be committed. why he is so in love with Russell is beyond me .... it is clear as day he cant handle NFL defenses .... and it was clear as day to me when he was at LSU. i was stunned when they were talking about him as a high draft choice. thought i was hearing wrong.

So, Dawg, based on your last post, what is your assessment of Stafford? Did Detroit waste their money, or will they try to get a line to help Stafford out? I guess all in all, as long as most college QBs enjoy the game, then that is all that is really important. Obviously it a lot more fun if you are winning. All of the huge contracts that rookies are getting in the NFL have the potential to ruin the athlete.

#183 .... i disagree ....... if Tebow wanted my wife and was a billionaire ..... i guarantee you he would fail. some women have this thing .... its called "class". what you shouldve typed was .... Tebow could have any skank that goes around having sex with famous and rich people. THAT .... i agree with. unless of course the skank is already having sex with somebody more famous or richer.

178 Are you delusional you and DAWGBREATH are the experts in attacking people. You referenced me and DAWGBREATH is a psycho giving everyone a convoluted and irrelevant quiz (you are both blogging bullies). Now to the subject at hand. Tebow is a complete player. It is his running game that makes him a unique quarterback. His athleticism and ability to think on the fly is unparalleled (i.e LSU-2007, Alabama-2008). The other quarterbacks do not have the running ability..(i.e. Snead, Bradshaw, and McCoy). They are not strong enough or sharp enough. Oh, they can pass but when there are good defensive lineman coming at them they throw the ball away or do not execute. They don't get out of the pocket fast enough.

Angry ..... i disagree. i know you like Tebow a lot .... but i dont think he is that good of a passer. yes, i know he threw a ton of TDs last season .... but what Florida QB hasnt ? i watched Florida play in three games last season, including against Oklahoma ..... and most of his passes were not well thrown. i understand the announcers of that game were rubbing jizz into their chest talking about what a great passer he was .... and how could people question his passing ability .... YAWN .... they said the same thing about Vince Young against USC. i pay no attention what these broadcasters have to say .... when is the last time you heard one of them say ... my god ... this kid has no chance in the NFL. Tebow is a good running QB and an average at best passer .... a recipe for failure in the NFL. i will gladly eat my words if he succeeds .... but ive been pretty damned good at predicting failures at QB in the NFL. i have had huge arguments with people over whether a QB will succeed or fail in the NFL, and i cant remember the last time i was wrong. i think i would have to go back to Mark Brunell for the last time i thought a good college QB would fail in the NFL and didnt.

Righttospeak, Thank your father and wife for their service, for me. It takes a lot to sacrifice for people they do not even know. You seem to be a very bitter person, I would hope that you can find happiness somewhere soon so that you can stop atacking people in an anonymous and PUBLIC forum. Also, when was your last post that was remotely close to the subject of the article. To those of you that have so many negative things to say about Tim Tebow, you are entitled to your opinion. I will now speak mine. Tebow is a fine young man, a good athelete, a good football player and a superb leader. IF he goes on to the next level, he has the ability to be as successful as any other player in the NFL. What will determine his success is his attitude, and the team that will be around him. How successful does anyone think that Stafford will be in Detroit with no offensive line?

#176 ...... AC Green was a virgin for his entire NBA playing career with the Lakers ..... and has three championship rings. what the hell does being a virgin have to do with anything ????? at least Florida doesnt have to worry about their QB being accused of rape ..... like USC had to deal with in Mark Sanchez. it just blows me away how so many people are concerned about the sex lives of people they dont even know.

oh ..... and these Big 12 QBS you speak so highly of .... how have THEY done in the NFL ????? failures. Bradford will be no different. Big 12 QBs get to the NFL and say ..... whoaaaaaa whoaaaaaaaaa whoaaaaaa .... what the hell is this ?????? see .... in the NFL, unlike the Big 12 ...... they actually play defense. seriously ...... of all these impressive numbers Big 12 QBs have put up in college .... please tell me the last one that was successful in the NFL. Big 12 produces good college QBS, and horrible NFL QBs.

Steve Spurrier is a coward. He is apoligizing to a QB that will never be successful in the NFL. He has no pride in himself. What a beeeyatch!!! Tim Tebow is not the best QB in the SEC and definetly is not the best college football player in the Nation. I can name two QB's from the Big12 that are extremely better football players than VIRGIN Tebow.
