SEC stiffens penalties for complaining coaches

  • Print

NEW YORK (AP)—Publicly griping about officials in the Southeastern Conference just got a lot more costly for Lane Kiffin and the rest of the league’s coaches.

After three SEC coaches in two weeks, including Tennessee’s Kiffin, received reprimands for ripping officials, the conference has decided that future punishment for similar antics will be fines and suspensions.

A memorandum was sent by the league office on Friday to every school making them aware of the change, which is effective immediately.

Commissioner Mike Slive, in his eighth season with the conference, was given full discretion by the league’s athletic directors and presidents to hand out the punishment. He will determine the amount of fines and lengths of suspensions on a case-by-case basis.

“On rare occasions over the last seven years there were several private reprimands and that took care of the matter,” Slive told the AP in a telephone interview. “On occasion there were public reprimands and that took care of it. It became clear to me after last week that I was no longer interested in reprimands.

“We will go right to suspensions and fines.”

The Big 12, Big Ten, ACC, Pac-10 and Mountain West conferences also use public reprimands, fines and suspensions as penalties for coaches who are publicly critical of officiating.

The SEC’s officiating, and public complaints by a few coaches about it, has drawn plenty of unwanted attention to Slive’s conference.

Last week, an officiating crew was suspended after it called penalties the league said were not supported by video evidence in the LSU-Georgia game Oct. 3 and the Arkansas-Florida game Oct. 17. The SEC publicly announced the suspensions, an unprecedented move by the conference.

Slive said that while he believes the SEC officiating has been good this season, the unusual circumstances with that one crew convinced him to go public with the punishment.

“It had to do with a very unusual confluence of events that we have not seen before and I doubt we will see again, in that we had two calls by a crew over a relatively short period of time that the video evidence did not support,” Slive said. “And one of the rules in play was the excessive celebration rule that has long been a subject of public debate.

“Given all that, we felt it was important to say publicly the discipline we had imposed. That is not something we expect to have to do again.”

The day after the crew was suspended, Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino was reprimanded by Slive for making critical statements about officiating in the Razorbacks’ 23-20 loss at Florida.

Then on Sunday, Kiffin and Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen each went off on the officiating in their Saturday games. Kiffin’s Volunteers lost 12-10 at Alabama and Mullen’s Bulldogs lost 29-19 to Florida in Starkville, Miss.

The SEC responded Monday by reprimanding both coaches for violating league ethics rules. The league made no public admonishment of the calls that Kiffin and Mullen complained about.

Kiffin made it clear Sunday that he was not worried about getting a reprimand for his comments: “I’m sure we’ll get one of those letters that really means nothing as Bobby got last week, but Florida and Alabama live on.”

Tennessee spokeswoman Tiffany Carpenter said Friday that Kiffin and athletic director Mike Hamilton would not comment on the SEC’s stiffer penalties.

“We fully expect and anticipate that we will have the full cooperation of our coaches from this day forward,” Slive said.

Kiffin received his first reprimand in February for accusing Florida coach Urban Meyer of violating recruiting rules.

Kiffin and Meyer tossed a few verbal jabs at each other in the following months and South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier even weighed in about Kiffin at one point. Slive twice this year has talked to Meyer and Kiffin about all the chatter.

Slive said he is always available to speak to coaches about concerns about officiating, but he does not feel the need to speak to any coaches individually on the subject.

“I think the memo is crystal clear,” Slive said. “It needs no embellishment.”

slive you're an idiot. your name should be slime. This is the UNITED STATES of AMERICA. Maybe you you did your job you imcompetent ass then there would be no reason for coached to complain. I hope all this eventually goes to court & that you will be reprimanded for violating coaches civil right. If you did your job & get after officials for blowing calls then we would not be in this mess. Only thing you have proved is that the position of SEC commisioner is way too big for you. You are a total idiot

Everyone whinning about the lack of Freedom of Speech is insane. I don't know your and you don't know me, but I am willing to bet that none of you have critized your boss or customers to their face. That would be career suicide. I ask all of you this: If you have a sales rep that is pushing your products and he/she complains to a customer about why something wasn't devlivered on time are you going to just chalk it up to Freedom of Speech or would you reprimand that salesperson and take more drastic measures the next time it occurs. I would bet you chose the latter. Think about it in everyday occurances rather than on Saturday afternoons. I know these coaches are not employees of the SEC fut rather the schools they coach, but guess what, they are governed by the SEC when it comes to professional conduct and sportsmanship. That is why Kiffin has been called out in this article.

I hear that they are considering throwback jerseys for the SEC refs next year. They will keep the stripes, but add a 6 digit number for their inmate number and a helmet. Perhaps Warden Slive will like the attention given for something like that...protect those refs at all cost Mike!!

Or perhaps, they should wear their favorite team jerseys during the game...after all, aren't they supposed to "blend in?"

in other words s.c.r.e.w. you, our refs feelings are way too fragile to subject them to higher standards, and we dont care if the calls cost your team or not...

My goodness! Slive must have called up the Redskins for advise on how to get people to stop talking. I want to hear what the coaches really have to say about a game. If Slive doesn't like the negative attention, then have a talk with the refs and have them get it straight. We can't even criticise people any more in this country. Its a job. If you don't like people complaining about the work that you produced, then don't produce awful work. If someone in your office is producing horrible work that affects what you do and what you produce, then I think you have room to complain. If consumers are fed up with what a company puts out, and it can be directly associated with a specific person, the Boss is going to either fire the person responsible and hire someone who can do the job right, or they will make sure that the person gets back on the right track. The Boss is going to tell everyone to stop criticising his product and to just buy it anyway. Oh wait, that's what the Redskins are doing...and in essence, what Slive and the SEC are doing. They can't punish us, the consumers, but they can tell the coaches to stop pointing it out to us, like we needed them to point out something blatantly obvious like poor officiating. Just ridiculous.

anred, that's the wisest, most mature statement I've seen around here in a long time :)

It's one thing to appeal (it's done weekly). It's another thing to throw a fit. The point still is that these guys are working hard, doing their job. Until you guys officiate, and are perfect, don't spend so much time complaining. Yes, they are expected to do quite well given the higher level. Do NFL qbs never throw bad picks, or stock brokers never buy the wrong stock???

Officiating is a difficult task. All the officials go through extensive training and they know the rules/regulations better than 99.9 perecnt of us. Granted, mistakes happen, but there is a proper way to address issues and solve the problems. Public disrespect and acusations made by a football coach is unprofessional and should be dealt with severely. This is the only way to show coaches like "Generation X" Kiffin that this type of inappropriate action will not be tolerated.

I can't actually believe that Silva " believes the SEC officiating has been good this season" The more I watch it seems the worse they get. It is very sad to know that the officials have determined the outcome of several games with missed calls and no calls. Florida/Arkansas was the worst. They took that game from Arkansas. They did all they could to do the same to Miss St last week when they played Florida. Silva needs to be fining the refs not the coaches. And he needs to put two or three officials up in a booth t
    to review every call.

The SEC has the worst officals in the NCAA. I've seen them in bowl games make calls that were so absurd. If I didn't know better, I would think there is wagering on the game done by the officials. It's been done before (NBA). We must control the rants and raves of the coaches and discipline them when they step over the line. If the NCAA did not, then the players and fans would soon follow suit and the game would be destroyed. However, since we put so much emphasis on good sportsmanship by players and coaches we need to come up with a better deterrant for poor officiating. These guys don't get paid jack to do these games. Why do they do them? Mmmmmmmm. Why would a politician ( a school board member) spend thousands of dollars to run for an office that pays nothing? See where I'm going. Power, prestigue and maybe a little "payback" are reasons I can think. We should not have SEC officails doing SEC games, Big 12 doing Big 12 etc etc. Have independant judges. These officials all know the players, coaches and faculty of the schools where they are working. Maybe too good as well. Pull them away from home, pay them better and fine the heck out of them when they err.

Gary Danielson, ESPN GAME play-by-play for the Tennessee-Alabama game immediately brought to the attention of the fans watching the game that the ball was not dead, had been blocked into Tennessee's backfield and was a live ball to be advanced by either Tennessee or Alabama. The fact that the side official was pointing to the ball on the field after the block in fact means that the play is continuing for either team. Bama was celebratilng and Tennessee picked-up the ball and could not advance. The penalty for excessive celebration on Bama would have moved the ball 15 yards closer to the Bama goal for a re-kick. The game cannot end on a defensive penalty! Say what you want about Kiffen, but the Vols outplayed the Tide, lost by 2 and missed 3 field goals. Congratulations Bama, you won the game . . . but, you lost the war. The Vols are back! Florida found that out in the Swamp when they couldn't put an ass-kickin' on Tennessee. Yes, the Vols lost to UCLA earlier in the season, but UCLA lost their quarterback in the final minutes, and Tennessee has come together as a team. The SEC officials have missed too many calls in too many games this season for the SEC Commisioner to say anything to the coaches for raising some HELL about the situation!

Slive needs to straighten out the officials. They are pathetic and part of the blame is with Slive who wants to sweep the problem under the rug, silence his critics. He should recognize that the SEC has a problem and work to solve it.

TJ, you're just wrong, as SEC fans often are. Georgia already lost to Oklahoma State. UCLA beat Tennessee in Knoxville. Alabama was thrashed by Utah in the Sugar Bowl.

Next time, get all the facts before you post. Then you won't sound like the rooting homer you are.

@ Bossmoss, learn the rules before you spout off your mouth. Yes there would have been a 15 yard penalty against Bama but it would not negate the recovery by Alabama so?? no re-kick and no time left on the clock....game over

NCAA needs to step up to the plate and investigate the SEC. It is far too coincidental that all of the bad calls (or lack of calls) lean toward Florida and Alabama (the higher ranked teams). Slive and Redding must go down for this -- this stuff did not go on when Kramer was SEC Commish. Engineering a team into the NC is not acceptable on any level by any league.
