Notre Dame AD denies contacting potential coaches

  • Print

STANFORD, Calif. (AP)—Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said he has not contacted any coaches about a potential vacancy if Charlie Weis is fired after the season.

“We haven’t talked to anybody,” Swarbrick said before the Fighting Irish played their regular season finale at Stanford on Saturday night.

He was asked about a report that Notre Dame would be meeting with candidates as soon as Sunday.

“We haven’t authorized anybody to talk to anybody. It’s simply not true. Any version of it.”

Weis’ job status is on shaky ground near the end of a third straight disappointing season for Notre Dame (6-5). Instead of remaining on the West Coast to recruit after the game as originally planned, Weis will fly back with the team to Indiana.

Weis said earlier in the week that he would have a hard time arguing if Swarbrick decided to fire him. The two will meet sometime after the team returns to campus.

“We’ll engage in the evaluation in earnest following this game and we’ll go from there,” Swarbrick said.

Among the people considered possible candidates are Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops, Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly, TCU coach Gary Patterson and Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh.

Weis, who has six years left on a 10-year contract signed midway through his first season, took a 35-26 record into the game against Stanford in five years as Irish head coach. His .573 winning percentage is worse than the .583 marks that got his two predecessors, Tyrone Willingham and Bob Davie, fired.

After making it to Bowl Championship Series games his first two seasons, Weis has a losing record over his final three years. He is 16-20 heading into game against the Cardinal since the start of the 2007 season—the most losses ever by the Irish in a three-year span.

His only victory against a team that finished a season ranked in the Top 25 was a 41-17 win over Penn State squad, which finished the 2006 season ranked No. 24.

The reason it's taking so long to get going on Charlie's replacement is the economy. They can't drum up enough money from the faithful to buy out his contract. Those with enough scratch to pony up aren't willing to buy another pig in a poke.

Damn dude, did a soldier pee in your cheerios or sleep with your wife or something? A lot of hate directed at the Military for no apparent reason. Your soldier bashing was pretty intense. I never thought I would see the day when my service of 8 years and 2 trips to Iraq to fight for you and people like you would be bashed by someone that I do not know, does not know me and has no idea what he is talking about.

There are a lot of ways to say things and Swarbrick may not have officially authorized anyone to talk with prospects but somebody is and everybody knows it, including Swarbrick. I don't care who ND gets but the whole scenario is getting old. The sports media keeps ND on a damn pedestal as if there is no other school on the planet and every body's lives depends on knowing the most trivial latest.

What those of you defending the folks attacking his weight have missed is the last 5 years of arrogance, excuses and throwing his players under the bus. No it could never be Charlie's fault that ND lost never. Look at his first year in the Fiesta bowl against OSU. His style of offense was to throw the same pass 5 times in a row till the cb came up in press coverage then try to run a slago that got picked because the safety rolled to that side to prevent it. He was never a good head coach only an arrogant fat fool for that people across the country dislike him.

As for the other names not on the list I would think that Urban was only telling people he was not interested because he is in the middle of an undefeated season with a SEC title game next week and a potental National Championship game after. Why would he not consider the job? He will be losing over half his starting lineup after this season (not counting the underclassmen who will leave early) and have to groom a new QB seems about the right time to switch if you ask me.

Finally ND will not join a conference until they lose the Notre dame Broadcasting Company they make way too much money on their own to have to share revenue with 10 or 11 other schools. That is the reason they have refused the Big Ten on 3 seperate occasions when asked to join. Yes the 6 BCS conferences AND ND are quarenteed spots in the bowl games. Notre Dame needs to finish in the top 16 in the BCS rankings and then gets an automatic selection kind of like the conference champion from one of the 6 conferences.

Notre Dame is a dangerous program one good coach and the national recruiting they enjoy and you have a winning program. The new AD is different then the usual ones ND has had in the past.It will be interesting who they bring to the program no one listed above is on the list.A school that starts with a T and ends with an H is on the list.

I can't believe that local television station in Oklahoma City is reporting that Bob Stoops is interviewing this week for the ND job. I don't know why he would leave OU to go to ND. Of course, he has had a rough year and next year doesn't look much better.

    Hey, icantmakeyouthink .

I admire your passionate opinions, and these forums are meant to be fun. Just lay off all Military bashing.

I know he started it, by throwing his own experiences and opinions out there. But you need not lump all military personnelle into your insults or sarcasm

Wrong about the weight issue. As a man trying to coach athletes, he should take more pride in himself. I am in the Army, and am a leader."

You mean, you couldn't find a job, had low academic scores out of high school, so joined a organization that tells you what to do 24/7? Wow, Impressive.

"I know that if I let myself get even in the littlest bit out of shape, I lose credibility with my Soldiers." Can't lose what you never had, ya dig?
You're 53 years old, and almost died from surgery? Not likely.

"The same thing has to go with football." No, it does not.
I guess Joe Paterno should just check himself into the old age home, right ? He is 80 and can't keep up, better sh!tcan him.

"Who would I want coaching me if all other factors were equal,...."
They're not, you couldn't coach elementary school girl's touch football.

".....someone who takes care of themselves or someone like charlie, who tells me I have to stay in shape but looks like a walrus even after a gastric bypass."

I don't know: do your soldiers like following a double-digit IQ a$$clown? Walrus that, army clown.

Notre Dame players want him back: does that answer your moronic question?

Any head coach with an ounce of sense will demand that ND join the Big East for football as a pre-condition for accepting the job. No BCS Conf = No BCS Champ. Even if the NCAA moves to a 16 team playoff, the BCS schools will get first crack at the brackets."

I guess you neglected to read the article above? The part where it states Weis took Notre Dame to BCS bowls his first two years??? Here struggler, let me help you:

"After making it to Bowl Championship Series games his first two seasons....."

The BCS goes by, W-L, SOS and other criteria: if Notre Dame meets the proper criteria, they go to the national championship BCS game. Period, end of discussion.

Which the BCS would LOVE, since Notre Dame draws HUGE audiences. And going to a BCS bowl PAYS huge amounts to BCS bowl participants, which is why Weis got such a huge contract: he EARNED it in BCS revenue.

Now that your entire premise is shown to be worthless, and lacking any validity, care to make additional statements, or will this single demonstration of making an a$$ of yourself suffice?

maybe we are all need to look at the defense side of the ball, they have a good offense but no defense. that is where it needs to start by firing the defense coaching staff and starting out fresh for next season. they put up a enough points to win but they can not stop anybody on the defense side of the ball, that's where it needs to be addressed at , if that does not work then its time to find a new coach.

Whether Weis is a good coach or not is a debatable issue. However, all the comments related to his weight reflect more on the authors than the coach. Shame on you idiots for making fun of the man's appearance.

Let's see....Mike Golic, Lou Holtz, that old guy on ESPN radio, and what other losers will have nothing to say Monday about their "Sistine Chapel of Football" being beat down again. Wonder if they all stand
and sing the alma mater in their living rooms after these losses. Sickening. What joy to see them
handed another loss by a school with higher academic standards (also Navy for instance) as that is
one of their big excuses why they don't recruit the better players. You're history Domers. Give up.

A shot at a title 4-5x a DECADE??? What are you smoking?????? ND lost it's luster as a sports power years ago, and this had as much to do with shifting demographics and high academic standards (although this last claim is specious at best - ND like all so-called high quality academic schools will bend the rules substantially if it means national recognition, i.e., $$$!!!) as it did with attracting a quality coach and great athletes to an armpit of the Midwest and over-rated academic institution.
