Weis will help Tate decide whether to return to ND

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP)—The much-anticipated talk between coach Charlie Weis and athletic director Jack Swarbrick won’t be the only conversation next week that will have a big impact on Notre Dame’s future.

Weis also plans to sit down with Jimmy Clausen and Golden Tate to talk with them about whether they should stay in school or enter the NFL draft. There probably won’t be much Weis can tell Clausen, who is already projected to be a first-round draft pick, that he doesn’t already know.

Tate is a different story. He started the season as Notre Dame’s No. 2 receiver, behind Michael Floyd, but has been one of the brightest spots in what has become a disappointing season for the Irish (6-5), who have lost three straight. After setting school records for receptions and receiving yards this season, he is one of three finalists for the Biletnikoff Award.

Still, there are questions about how the 5-foot-11 Tate will do in the NFL because of his height and whether his relative inexperience as a receiver will hurt him in the draft. Tate was a high school running back and struggled to learn how to run pass routes as a freshman.

He can still get a lot better, Weis said.

“Maybe not necessarily numbers-wise, but he can get better from where he is now,” Weis said.

Tate’s speed, though, should make up for any other shortcomings, saying NFL scouts will be impressed once they watch how Tate plays, Weis said.

“Because anyone who is watching the tape, they’re not worrying about the height. I think that more importantly, they want to let him go to the combine and see what number he runs,” he said. “Because when all of a sudden it’s a 4.4 flat or something along those lines, that height will be thrown right out the window.”

Weis called Tate a “clone” of Carolina Panthers receiver Steve Smith, who is 5-9.

“A little trash-talker just like Golden. But their personalities are alike. They’re fiery guys. They make big plays. They’re tough. They don’t back down from anyone,” he said. “I would imagine, I don’t know exactly Steve’s size, but I would imagine it’s probably pretty close, and he’s done pretty well, last time I checked.”

Tate wasn’t available to talk to the media this week after Weis announced Tuesday that no players or assistant coaches would be allowed to talk to reporters. Tate said last week he still hadn’t thought about what he will do next year.

He’s also talked this season about how plenty of others have been willing to give him advice. He said people he doesn’t know walk up to him and tell him what he should do.

“It’s weird,” he said “They’re like ‘You should leave.’ ‘You shouldn’t leave.’ I just say, ‘OK, thanks,’ and keep on rolling. When the time comes, the important people in my life will help me make that decision, not someone walking down the street.”

Tate said he will put a lot of faith in what Weis has to say.

“He’s always been honest with me. That’s one thing I like about him. He hasn’t told me what’s best for the program or what’s best for Notre Dame he tells me what’s best for me and what’s going to help my situation out,” Tate said. “I almost feel like he talks to me like I’m Charlie Jr. I really do appreciate it.”

Could have, would have or should have doesn't count. Notre Dame lost all those games. And clausen is not the #1 rated QB check your facts

tate said he'd leave (or would want to) if clausen leaves

clausens family just sold its south bend home (yes, the home the family bought to be close to jimmy while at nd)

so,,,it is highly likely the clausens have good reason to believe more than a couple nfl teams will want to draft him in first round, probably high (this decision was probably made in summer)

the above is independent of whether weis stays as coach; it's about $$, and rookie salary caps that will likely be imposed for 2011 draft; players who can leave, will leave 2010 (not just at nd)

So all you people are talking about a notre dame defense? Hm im sorry I didnt even realize they had a defense. We could so easily be undefeated right now, and very well should be. Im getting tired watching the offense score 30-34 points a game just to have it come down to the last second. If we had this thing the other teams have called a pass defense we'd be murdering teams. Our offense is the best in the nation, jimmy clausen IS the best qb in the nation. Experts saying barkley should be in the heisman talk after having a strong game against notre dame is bull, so he had a decent day against our defense, so has every other qb weve played this season! But besides the point, we will beat boston college and washington state ( which I have tickets for and cant wait haha ) and then we'll get floyd back and will show the experts what a true offense looks like. Screw tebow, screw mccoy and screw lockner.

They are not going to a BCS bowl, they are good but their defense sucks. They win the Michigan game if their defense can hold them. They win the SC game if their defense doesn't give up over 30 points. Everyone knows the offense is great but you can't keep overlooking the D and expect it to get better. If they win the BC game I think they can run the table but BC has owned them the last 6 years.

Here's a doozy: Tom Dienhart, the "rival's senior writer" and an "expert in his own mind" tells us not to "be fooled" by the closeness of the score in the USC Notre dame game...why????

Because Notre Dame was down and had to come back in it.....

Let that *gem* sink in, will ya? So, I guess Brett Favre, with 41 fourth quarter comebacks, is just "foolin' us", because the other team had his team down......the loser.....

In Tom Dienhart's mind, if you are ahead in the first quarter, YOU WIN!!!

Shoot, why even play 4 quarters Tom: the first one to score WINS!!!!!!

Sheesh, what a genius......and another boob with Fighting Irish envy......

I find it interesting that the majority of articles being written about the Irish concern the offense. The offense is not the problem, it's the DEFENSE or lack of. ]

And yet for two terrible calls and a last second comeback by the Wolverines against N.D. in the Michigan (5-2) game, and a missed extra point and a slip on the last play against #6 USC (6-1) last Saturday, Notre Dame (4-2) could be undefeated at 6-0.

Perhaps the O is talked about, because Clausen was the number one rated QB (176 rating) in the nation until the USC game (where he threw two TD passes, the first the USC offense has given up this year, despite the "critics and experts" labeling the Washington QB better than Jimmy), and is now the #2 rated QB in the nation. One one leg.

Golden Tate is the second best receiver in the nation: number one is Michael Floyd of Notre Dame: we have the best receiving squad in the nation, or did you miss Robby Parris making like Fred Biletnikoff against the USC Condoms DBs?

Our running game is also averaging 137 yards game.

So, "I find it interesting" (you HAVE to be a Rush Limbaugh fan) why anyone would "find it interesting" that an article about perhaps the best offense in the nation gets written.

If N.D. was in the Big Ten, we'd be 2-1, and ready to whip Iowa and their so-so offense, and take the top spot. Or are you saying Iowa has a better defense than USC? Let's see how the Hawkeyes do against Michigan......and compare the offense of Iowa and N.D. against a common opponent.

Yeah, we do have some tough games ahead with B.C., Pitt, Stanford and Navy (who btw, almost beat Ohio St at home their first game, and is 5-2 now, and USC could only win by 3 against Ohio St at OSU). And yeah, we *could* lose all three: they are tough teams, despite the Rival's "senior sports writer expert" Tom Dienhart labeling Notre Dame's remaining opponents no better than "barber shop teams." The USC lover, Dienhart, I might add...oh, but now, today, he writes an article about how wonderful Pitt is, the jackass nitwit. Nothing like contradicting your own logic week to week....

But, that's why they play'em, TJW: get back to me at the end of the season, and let's see if the N.D. offense, with Floyd coming back soon, doesn't end up playing, deservedly so, in a BSC bowl game, and beating one of the top 10 rated teams....I wouldn't bet against them after the way they played USC, injured and all.

Whether the "experts" like Dienhart have them rated, or not, matter little to me: where they finish, how they compete, and who they play in a bowl, if they do, is what matters.

I would lay money Notre Dame could beat 5 or 6 of the top 15 teams in the nation, easily...and if completely healthy, 10 of them.

ND still has Pitt, BC and Stanford. They could lose all 3. ND doesn't have a very good run defense and 5 of the 6 teams have a top rusher.
