Stanford hosts Notre Dame in Weis’ possible finale

  • Print

STANFORD, Calif. (AP)—Toby Gerhart plans to spend a few extra minutes soaking it all in before walking off the field in what could be his final game at Stanford Stadium on Saturday against Notre Dame.

“I don’t think it will really sink in until after the game is over,” Gerhart said. “Hopefully it’s a win, we’re happy and celebrating and it will be a sweet ending.”

Gerhart will be far from the only participant with those sorts of emotions Saturday when the Cardinal (7-4) host the Fighting Irish (6-5) in the regular season finale for both teams.

The game could well be the last at Notre Dame for Irish coach Charlie Weis and star quarterback Jimmy Clausen, too.

Though he’d presumably play in a bowl game, Clausen is widely expected to skip his senior seasons and enter the NFL draft. That’s a decision Gerhart is weighing as well, deciding whether to apply for a medical redshirt or head to the NFL.

Weis’ fate is out of his hands. He will fly back with the team to meet with athletic director Jack Swarbrick instead of going on a recruiting trip as originally planned.

Weis said Sunday that he “would have a tough time arguing” if the school decided to fire him after five seasons. Weis led the Irish to BCS bowls in his first two years but has struggled since then.

His 35-26 record gives him a .573 winning percentage, which is worse than the .583 winning percentage that got Notre Dame’s two previous coaches, Tyrone Willingham and Bob Davie, fired.

Weis refused to talk about his job status after Sunday, saying his focus was entirely on winning this week’s game.

“I’m ready to go,” he said. “I’m fired up. I really am. I’m fired up to go out and play Stanford. I’m really looking forward to it.”

It has been a tumultuous week at Notre Dame with talk about Weis’ job status and Clausen getting a black eye after being punched outside a bar early Sunday. The Notre Dame players were off limits to reporters this week. The Irish also will be without leading rusher Armando Allen, who is out with a cracked bone in his right hand.

The Stanford players are trying not to pay too much attention to all the hubbub around Notre Dame.

“We just don’t let it affect us at all,” Cardinal center Chase Beeler said. “No matter what the conditions are there, we will prepare like they are anyone else.”

Notre Dame has lost three straight heading into this game and is trying to avoid losing the final four regular season games for just the third time in school history. The Irish dropped the final four contests in 1999 under Bob Davie and in lost five in a row to end the 1963 season under Hugh Devore.

But the Irish have won seven straight games against Stanford, the only team the Cardinal seniors have played each year without beating. A win this week would take some of the sting out of last week’s 34-28 loss in the Big Game to California.

“This is a big one for us,” Gerhart said. “They’re a traditional power, the legacy, the history of Notre Dame. Thankfully last week wasn’t the last game of our season. We have a chance to go out and win this week and go out on a good note heading into the bowl game.”

Gerhart is the biggest reason why the Cardinal are headed to a bowl for the first time in eight years. He is wrapping up a splendid senior season for the Cardinal, having set school records for yards rushing (1,531) and touchdowns (23) while leading Stanford back to prominence.

“He’s special,” Weis said. “He’s a hard north-south runner. Not that he can’t bounce it outside, but you have to gang-tackle him, and we’ve had a few problems with tackling now.”

Gerhart still could decide to return for a fifth season, because he played only one game in 2007 because of a knee injury. After the bowl game, he will get an evaluation from the NFL about where he would be projected to be drafted and then make his decision.

“If it’s a pretty promising projection, I’ll get ready to train for the combine and devote myself to football,” said Gerhart, who also could be drafted in baseball. “Ideally, I have a couple more big games, go and do well at the combine and am a first-round pick.”

There also figures to be speculation in the coming weeks about whether Harbaugh will stick around for a fourth year at Stanford.

Even though Harbaugh is close to signing a contract extension, there is sure to be talk linking his name with job openings in the NFL and college football in the coming weeks, including at Notre Dame.

“I’m only interested in the one I have and I’m not going to talk about any job other than my own,” he said.

Does anyone really think that Clausen thinks that ND, with the defense it has, will really have a shot at a NC next year? They may get thru their cupcake schedule 8-4 or 9-3, but there wont be a serious shot at a NC. Jimmie is already gone.

Clausen will leave if Charlie is let go.

If Charlie stays Clausen will come back for his senior year because he wants a chance at the National Championship.

Notre Dame has a hard time recruiting because they are so strict. You have to almost be a genius to get in.

I hope this isn't the end for Charlie. He is the best coach EVER in the history of life. Let him finish his contract! ND needs him like Jimmy Clausen needs a punch in the face

I hope Harbaugh stays at Stanford as he says he will. He can be like Paterno at PSU, Bo at Michigan, Woody at OSU, etc. if he stays at Stanford another 20-25 years. Money isn't everything, and the Stanford job pays well enough. Jim could be one of the legends of College FB if he stays at Stanford. He has picked up Stanford's recruiting considerably. Many of the Top student-athletes are picking Stanford. (Top school in a top location with a great climate, etc). Please don't go to the NFL. Jim's personality is more suited to CFB--at Stanford!!

Sorry for CW. ND's had some tough losses and will be dangerous to play against tonight. This game will be very interesting. 2 more hours to go.

been a notre dame fan a long time. they have had good times. but they have been few and far between for some years now. i would like to see coach weis have a couple of more years. it aint all his fault. its mostly the fault of the damn bcs. those idiots have ruined football. its all about money and thats all the players see. ncaa football needs to take a lesson from ncaa basketball. might not be perfect, but its a hell of a lot better than the crap we are force fed now by the bcs. the same teams might win, but they would do it in a way that we could respect. them for.

At this point if a player for the Farting Irish was lacking in his academic skills do you really think the staff wouldn't pull together and remidy the problem rather than let that player miss a chance of making his mark towards a win on the field. I don't think so. And I don't think this would be the case at other universities as long as the player met the NCAA requirements. If it was the education these players were there for I would think differently. If Pickle Boy was there for the education then why the for sale sign. He is using the university as a stepping stone and thats all. Frady Quinn cared nothing about education just the $$$$ from being a first round pick that Weis had him thinking he was, "He's the next Tom Brady" I believe was the quote which proved to be wrong so far. Don't hang your hopes on the past and don't think for a minute the players put that uniform on for academics. South Bend is a speck on the map and the world of college football isn't revolving around that speck on the map.

Chris S - your logic is flawed. Any team that ND has played that was or is in the top 10 wont end the season that way. In fact, PITT will be the only opponent ranked in the top 20 at the end regular season and they are over rated as was obvious in last night's game against WVU. The combined records of their opponents is 72-62. Hardly the thing to use for a good strength of schedule argument, or arguing that the close losses are an indication that the team is better than their record. ND has very little defense and you can't win in the big boy league without a defense. Clausen, Tate and Floyd aren't good enough to make up for that.

Misread the scores there...they have lossed by only a touchdown or field goal when they did lose.If i was an owner or the member of an alumni i wouldnt fire my coach by those numbers.Would be ridiculous to do so.Give Charlie some credit folks and dont be so easily to bash someone just because the media is pushing this.Guess now we wont see a whole lot of people here tomorrow. The media said go jump off a cliff to.

Not sure what all the hype is around Coach Weis this year..Have always liked Notre Dame but live in Texas so i am a Horn fan. From where i am sitting if the alumni fires him this year they are the ones that need to be fired.Look at the games they have played(sorry ESPN but know Notre Dames schedule before mouthing off)They played 2 teams not 1 in the top 25.Now take their schedule and add up the total number of points by margin of victory by the other team.Am looking at 10 points or less they have lossed by.That only means one thing. The Fighting Irish are at the top of their game.Next year looks to be even better. If Charlie is back next year expect the Irish to go nearly undefeated....Hook Em Horns!!

    #80 km

Stanford , Cal Berkeley, Northwestern, USC, University of Texas are all ahead of Notre Fame in the list of top universities in the US - yet they have much better records and some are even ranked in the top 25 or have beaten a team in the top 25 or top 10.. University of Texas is ranked # 1 in the country interchangeable with Florida and Alabama.

As with regards to time spent in class, Notre Dame lost to NAVY whose athletes not only spend time in the classroom but time learning avionics, on flight instuction, and time spent in incessant military drills. So, a Domers excuse that ND is losing because other athletes don't spend time in the classroom has no cfedibilty, mich less validity.

km - do you have a list of excuses? If so, go get another one because the grade/academic one is lame. You think Stanford's standards are less then ND's? Perhaps the players and coaching staff just aren't as good as the competition. Just saying......

If the Thunder Chickens don't blow the Farting Irish off the field, there is no God. Really. I'm serious. There is no higher power if Stanford does not emerge victorious tonight. Who in the world would want Neuter Shame to win this game? It would make the world a messy, uneven, unsettled place. Stanford needs to win to close out a very nice, resurgent season and generate some positive vibe heading into its bowl game. A Notre Dumb victory accomplishes nothing in the big picture. Weis is gone anyway, and a meaningless W just gives the psycho Subway Alum false hope.

Bottom line: This game needs to turn out the "right" way. Notre Lame needs to finish off a competitive (yes, competitive because every game HAS been close) but thoroughly disappointing season in losing style.

Mighty Thunder Chickens 41, The Ghosts of Ara Raoul Parseghian 20.

Besides, serves Clausen right for leaving Cali for that Midwest Hell Hole, South Bend Me Over. Karma is a bee-otch, Jimmy.

Notre Dame will end the season at 6-6 having faced only 4 teams that have a winning season and beating only 2 of them - Nevada and Boston College. How does a program with the recruiting classes they've had in the last 4 years (and more really) underachieve like they do? See below.

    2005 - 5th
    2006 - 5th
    2007 - 6th
    2008 - 9th

FACE IT DOMER HOMERS - YOUR PROGRAM IS IRRELEVANT. 2010 IS GOING TO BE EVEN WORSE.
