ND’s loss to Navy puts pressure on Weis again

  • Print

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP)—After his first season as Notre Dame coach, Charlie Weis hung a banner in the weight room that read: “9-3 is not good enough.”

Those words may prove prophetic.

That record is the best the Fighting Irish (6-3) can finish the regular season following their stunning 23-21 loss to Navy on Saturday, and critics of Weis, who has six years left on his 10-year contract, are out in full throat. Fan message boards are rife with those calling for his firing—with some saying he should be let go immediately.

South Bend Tribune columnist Al Lesar wrote the loss could be a “deal-breaker,” saying that the loss to Michigan had already faded and the loss to USC had been excused. But the loss to Navy is different, he wrote, it won’t go away.

“It’s one that will be on the top of the pile come review time,” Lesar wrote.

Irish players showed frustration, too. Jimmy Clausen, hobbled by toe turf toe most of the season and needing to be helped off the field in the third quarter when he was hit hard and fumbled at the goal line, was called for a late hit for pushing back a Navy lineman after Clausen’s pass bounced off receiver Michael Floyd’s back for an interception.

After the game, Notre Dame nose guard Ian Williams said that Navy “out-schemed us and I think they just played harder.”

That drew a response Sunday from Weis, who pointed out that safety Kyle McCarthy said after the game that Navy’s success had nothing to do with the scheme.

“There’s a reason why one guy’s a captain and one guy’s not,” Weis said.

But even McCarthy said the Irish defensively “just tried to do the same stuff as we did last year.” That’s what Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo said he was counting on.

The loss Saturday was reminiscent of last season when it seemed Weis had done just enough to get off the proverbial hot seat when the Irish inexplicably blew a double-digit lead in a loss to Syracuse, the first time in its storied history that Notre Dame was beaten by an eight-loss team.

Until the loss Saturday, the Irish were aiming for a Bowl Championship Series berth and the talk about Weis had generally subsided. That changed quickly.

Weis said he didn’t hear from any fans after the loss, saying the only two fans he had to deal with were his wife Maura and 16-year-old son, Charlie Jr.

“Trust me, they’re a lot worse than the rest of them,” he said.

Now the best the Irish appear capable of is going to either the Gator or Cotton bowls, and they still have games left at No. 8 Pittsburgh (8-1) and at No. 25 Stanford (6-3), sandwiched around a game at home against Connecticut (4-5).

Weis was asked how the Irish, who have a star quarterback and two standout receivers, can fail to make it to a BCS game.

“Is the glass half full or is the glass half empty?” Weis asked rhetorically. “We lost three games by 13 points. But there are a lot of close wins that could have gone the other ways for us, too. I think we have some dynamic players on our team, but it still comes down to situational football. You still have to excel in situational football.”

The situation for Weis is this: A loss at Pitt would leave Weis with a 35-25 record, the same record that got Bob Davie fired in 2001. It’s also the same .583 winning percentage that got Tyrone Willingham fired in 2004. A loss also would leave the Irish at 6-4, just a loss away from the record Willingham had in his last season when he was fired and Weis was brought in.

“Right now you’re a 6-5 football team, and guess what, that’s just not good enough,” Weis said when he was introduced in 2004. “That’s not good enough for you, and it’s certainly not going to be good enough for me.”

The question is: Will 9-3, 8-4 or 7-5 be good enough?

ND, has made the same mistake as NFL teams made, by hiring Bill Belichick assistants. The genius is and was Belichick. When I was a teenager in the 60's, college football was basically (8) TEAMS, OK, NB,TX, AL, ND, USC, MI and OH ST. The given was blue chippers, wanted to attend these Universities, guaranteed great programs and exposure. Since, ESPN and other sports networks that is no longer the case. Also, the NFL found out long ago that their biggest stars come from smaller programs, the kids know this and want and get immediate exposure at smaller schools. You need another coach, don't exceed a three year contract, until you become #1 or are consistenty in the top 10. IMO

WHY does ND continue to extend these absurdly long contracts to thier coaches and then have to buy them off? Charlie Weis has done an INEXCUSABLY poor job at a beautiful and exemplary university. He's already making over 4 million a year. If he had any integrity, which he obviously does not, he should leave of his own accord. I love ND, and it is disheartening to see this arrogant and obviously unskilled "coach" blame everyone but himself for this dismal record. Take a hike, Charlie. Brian Kelly may save the progam yet.

Irish fans, don't get too high on Kelly. I'd love to have him on board too, but remember the last hiring process when Ty got fired. Chuck Weis was NOT the first, second, third, or fourth candidate for the job. I was beginning to think we'd never find a coach. If Kelly doesn't get the job, then what? If not Gruden, then what? No Meijer, than what? Weis is also recruiting another solid class. If he gets the boot (and he should), then what? We are a mess. ND better pitch Kelly one hell of a deal, just not for 10 years.

Weis should step down as the offensive coordinator, we should fire Tenuta without hesitation and bring in Brian Kelly as the head coach and we'd have another elite team by next year.

another thing about the nd job they make all students take calculus. that scares off a lot of kids plus RECRUITING HAS SHIFTED THE POWER IS NOW IN THE SOUTH ! the SEC is the number one legue in the country. Why would a top football prospect be stupid to waste 4 years in south bend playing in NO CONFERENCE ! against ARMY,NAVY(who ND can't beat) and air force when you can play, the best and that's in the sec.NOTRE DAME IS LIVING ON IT'S PAST REPUTATION !!! THEY ARE A HAS BEEN ! It's not the coaches it's the school.

look lets just call this season what it is from a ND fan perspective, underachievment. A great offense with a pathetic defense. We should have never lost to Michigan this year that was on our poor defense, Weiss still hasn't beaten USC that was also on our defense giving up a record day to a freshman QB. Now Navy? Cmon this is redicuolus. They gave up over 300 yards rushing again a bad defensive game plan any one seeing a trend here, now the offense sputtered Saturday but they arn't gonna kill it every week and those are the weeks defense has to play. This is coaching and studying game film and game day scheming. Its time for Charlie to go, with that much offensive talent if you can't get your D to help out to get 10 or 11 wins you don't deserve to be the ND coach. He is a good recruiter maybe he could stay on board in some sort of recruiting capacity. Go after Brian Kelly I live right next to GVSU where he started in DII every where he goes has become a success.

Who wants the lousy ND job ? the campus is nice but have you ever been to south bend? The notre dame coaching job is like being married to Elizabeth Taylor they look at her and she's awesome EVERY GUY THINKS IT'S GOING TO BE DIFFERENT WITH THEM ! what happens THEY GET THROWN OUT. They play in no league, The administration is ARROGANT AS THE DAY IS LONG ! Getting players admitted is very tough, monday thru friday they want to be harvard on saturday they want to be oklahoma. THE JOB AND THE SCHOOL AINT WHAT IT USED TO BE! A smart coach should not touch this job with a TEN FOOT POLE!

I'm a life long Notre Dame fan. Let's look at the season as a whole. Nevada had a "potent" offense coming back this season but they couldn't score at ND. Michigan took advantage of Notre Dame's inability to close out a "big" game. Defense couldn't make stops at the end of the game. Purdue and Michigan State showed a team without a lot of "fire" until the very end. You have to play all 60 minutes of the game. Washington couldn't stop Claussen and Tate. The USC game was all on the defense how do you let them score 34 points and not make stops before that on a consistent basis? The Irish didn't look awful in the first quarter of USC game but looked to take off the 2nd and 3rd quarters. BC was a lucky win as the team looked flat. Washington State, well come on now their defense is one of the worst in the country. Claussen, Tate, Rudolph, and Parris had all day to play pitch and catch. Navy played great game and Irish showed no determination until they we're behind late in the game. Common themes: lack of desire, average at best defense, inconsistent. Charlie Weis should step down to an offensive co-ordinator role next season and let someone else be the head coach. ND needs a coach who is willing to light a "fire" under his players throughout the whole 60 minutes of the game at hand. Urban Meyer won't come to Notre Dame unless they give him around $100 million for 3-4 yrs because he's got a great program down in Florida. Brian Kelly and Skip Holtz are two names that have merit if Weis was fired. Holtz because he has respect for the traditions, history and culture that is Notre Dame football. He will not accept this mediocrity we have seen the last 3 seasons. I would hope the Irish win out but they have to prove they have both the skill and desire to do so or they will have one or more losses. Whatever the decision be about Weis, hopefully the university can make the right choice to return this program to glory. Go Irish!

I am here in in Cincinnati and happen to be a Irish season ticket holder. The rumors are flying about Kelly to the Irish. The lack of respect the bearcats have gotten twice this year in the BCS will be the main reason he leaves. And it does not hurt that he will double his salary fulfilling his dream job in Southbend!! Coach Kelly us Irishmen are waiting for you to come save the day in Soutbend. Go Irish!!!

Brian Kelly of Cincinnati, please give the proverbial nod-and-wink through the grapevine-channels to ND's administration. Don't you want a 2-4x salary raise?

Kelly: An Irishman's Irishman; son of a cop; North Boston bred; 19-year head coaching track record eerily similar to the ascent of Urban Meyer.

To quote Florida Gators' athletic director about the ND administration's failure to act quickly to secure Urban Meyer: "You snooze, you LOSE."

    Ouch.

Where is Jay Jordan (Jordan Equity Partners; former Irish football player and board chair of ND's endowment)?

Mr. Jordan: get on your jet and pop over to southern Ohio already.

I still say give Charlie a chance! He may not have the record that is any better than the coaches before him, but he has what it takes to deal with these scholar athletes. He shows more energy than the other coaches and may need a few more years to build the team. When the change in the academic standards changed it is going to take a long time to adjust and I think he has made good changes thus far.

Bryce - you are the reason ND haters hate ND. Being a "graduate" and all, your post speak volumes about the comprehensive ignorance and arrogance of your school.

You post nothing but emotion filled rants. Its obvious you very insecure about your choices and place in life. Just accept that ND football is a mid tier FBS program and you will a little bit happier in life. You need to let go of the past because it has passed you by!

I just got off the phone with a very close friend who hates Notre Dame. First he said he hates Notre Dame, and when I asked him why he hates ND, he backtracked and said he only dislikes Notre Dame. So ask why he dislikes ND. His first statement was because they have their own TV deal, in so many words. Second statement, ND gets way too much press. Third statement, ND hasn't been a championship team for so long. He's from Iowa, so I said, "And neither has Iowa." When I mentioned the word jealousy to him, he went verbally ballistic on me. My friend is typical of people who hate ND. He also hates several other teams, including Wisconsin, Ohio State, and Michigan. He likes Miinnesota except when they play Iowa because Minnesota never wins anything.

I root for underdogs all the time just because I would like to see them enjoy a little success occasionally. I admit I get tired of the same teams winning all the time in any sport whether pro or college. However, I abhor teams, programs, and organizations that cheat in some way or another to get on top and stay there. I have no love for the Oakland Raiders because of their owner who hires gangsters instead of football players. I have no love for USC because they have broken the rules so many times over the last five decades and have often gotten away with only a gentle slap on the hand. Woody Hayes made me hate Ohio State the day he punched an opposing player. I don't like Michigan or Michigan State because far too often they have ruined Notre Dame's season on their own fields with Big Ten officials making very questionable calls. Oklahoma is in the same category as USC. I don't like the Yankees because they have always had more money than any other team in baseball and have been able to buy the best players. They were like that before the draft was being in 1965, and since Steinbrenner bought the team, they are like that again.

I don't hate any college football team because they get more press than Notre Dame or because they get some recruit Notre Dame didn't get or because they don't have the same tradition as Notre Dame has. I still have some psychological issues, but who doesn't?

atul s: You're close on the scheduling. Notre Dame has always played a varied schedule like they do now. Next year they will be playing Western Michigan, their first ever MAC opponent. Another Michigan team on the schedule to attract those viewers. That's business. You're right about them not scheduling Utah State or New Mexico State. But they do have Utah on the future schedule. Why? Whole state of Utah will view the game. They have Tulsa on a future schedule. Tulsa has had some very good teams in recent years, and Tulsa has a large viewer base. Ratings, ratings, ratings. If Notre Dame had been Tulsa's opponent Saturday night, how much greater would the viewership have been than with Houston on the schedule?
