AP source: Michigan regents discuss NCAA probe

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP)—The University of Michigan Board of Regents discussed the NCAA investigation into the football program on Wednesday, The Associated Press has learned.

A person familiar with the session confirmed the probe was part of the discussion. The person spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because the school is not disclosing any details of what it calls an informal meeting.

The person did not discuss any details with the AP.

The school and the NCAA are looking into allegations raised last fall that players practiced or spent time on football-related activities beyond what is allowed by the NCAA.

The Detroit Free Press, citing a person it did not name, said the regents expect the university to announce the results of its probe in a couple weeks.

Coach Rich Rodriguez said he did not know details of the regents’ meeting.

“I’m sure I’ll know in due time,” Rodriguez said Wednesday after announcing 27 high school football players had signed letters of intent. “They won’t leave me in the dark.”

A few weeks ago, University of Michigan President Mary Sue Coleman said she didn’t know the NCAA’s timetable for notifying the school what alleged violations, if any, were uncovered in the investigation and that she wasn’t anxious about the process.

“I want to see what the issues are and we’ll deal with the issues,” Coleman said while attending a basketball game.

Rodriguez’s team is coming off a 5-7 season that started 4-0. Near the end of the second consecutive disappointing season for the Wolverines, the school released embarrassing details of an internal audit that discovered Rodriguez’s team failed to file forms tracking how much time players spent on football during his first season and the following offseason.

The NCAA sent Coleman a notice of inquiry in October, saying it planned to complete its investigation by Dec. 31.

Incoming athletic director David Brandon, who will begin his job next month, has said he’s not bracing for bad news.

RR is bad period. After Lloyd Carr I thought Michigan would do the program proud. I was wrong, they will never be anything until Harbaugh shows up. Don't wait until 2011, DO IT NOW.

#1 I am a die hard wolverine fan. But, how can people be suprised at the fact that after only 2 painful years of RicRod the program is underinvestigation.... Look how he departs from West Virginia? Under a cloud of skeptisism! Accused of cheating, shredding records, player profiles, why would he need to do that? Now, he loses track of how long his players are practicing and doesn't log this information? Duh..RichRod this all new info to you?? Maybe U of M's board ought to open their eyes at what they are hiring. Quit going for UWV's coaches. Let them rot in the Big East.. If you would like to improve your program, MAKE A LIGITAMATE OFFER AND RUN AT LES MILES OR JIM HARBAUGH. Get real BIG BLUE your football & basketball programs ARE LAUGHING JOKES!!! It's almost time to become an MSU fan. NEVER thought I would say that one, but at least they are CLEAN, LIGITMATE & WINNING PROGRAMS NOT UNDER INVESTIGATIONS!!!

David, I really don't care what happens to USC. All I stated was that IF they are not punished, the NCAA is done.

Earnest - About showing your face - Dude, bad move. When you state that "we" dominated in the 70s. Hmmmmmm, seems to me that Bama won National Titles in 78 & 79 and had great seasons in 77 & 80. In fact, except for the media they should have won the title in 77. If ND and Mich are so great, when did they last win a NC? Listen Gobber, ND's and Mich's glory days are over, they can't depend on having NCs voted to them by the Northern voters anymore. Are you sure that you are not from TN? That haircut sure looks like a TN hair style - just saying.

I've been a Wolverine fan for 22 years. These last 2 years have been hard to watch. I believe RR is not the right man for the job. I understand that it may take a coach a few years to come a round, but this is just unacceptable. Michigan has lost its pride. I still love the team, the colors, everything they stand for. I believe we've only beaten OSU once in the last 9 years, come on, get real, we've lost or edge, or hearts. Let's get a real coach in charge and lets make some noise for the greatest team in college football. RR may fit in somewhere else, just not @ the Big House............

The story is not completely accurate. The story about the tracking forms actually broke prior to the season, not near the end.

Just curios as to why OSU fans think MeatChicken is an insult? I mean, chickens are killed for their meat, is there another kind of chicken? For instance a pasta chicken? I understand, "meatchicken" is a play on words for Bob Euferts' pronunciation of the word Michigan, thats fine, but its still stupid....

How do you get an OSU grad off your porch? Pay them for the pizza.

I'm not a RR fan, but heres the facts: Some signees will work out, some won't. Happens every time for every team. What you think of any team after signing day is irrelevant to their record next fall. Making predictions about the arc of a program after a coach's first year reveals how little you know about the college game.
Haters go somewhere else. I wanna talk football with someone who has something intelligent to say.

I believe that collectively we need to stop the bashing of each other's teams and appreciate the game for what it is. I'm a Michigan fan and always will be, but I appreciate and enjoy a good college football game no matter who is playing. I thought the Texas/Alabama game was a great match up and represented the best that college ball has to offer. I'm not saying that we shouldn't be passionate about our favorite teams, but it's just plain dumb to trash other people for supporting a different team. That's showing poor sportsmanship.....whatever happened to "honorable competition"? Sports isn't a "live or die" proposition people. We should all root hard for our teams, but tip our caps to the competitor when we lose. Be as honorable in defeat as we are glorious in our victory. That's being a good sport.

By the way all you Alabama fans. I seen them in a game against Notre Dame they played them in South Bend. I seen em when Ozzie Newsome was there, I sat with the guy that recruited Johnny Davis that day. I liked him, but not you current fans, you guys suck. He was cool, I thought you were suppose to be southern gentlemen. Yea right, you idiots are uncouth and you need to hear it from someone, so I'll tell ya. Everything goes in cycles you don't wanna say too much right now we will be back on top just like always. Enjoy your time now because everybody knows your way over rated. Why do we always either split with them in wins or beet them so shut up. If your so much better why do we have a winning record against you ?

Michigan and ND football is not even worth arguing about they both are way past their heyday. Like a old model that now needs plastic surgery bc her face is sagging... Michigan football has fallen on hard time.

I noticed I'm the only one with enough intestinal fortitude to show his face lol. Southern frig-gin hillbillies anyway it just killed em in the 70's how we dominated football, just ask the swc. lol So you get scholarships limited to keep the big two from getting the best recruits away from the racist south. Well we will be back on top I'm not even worried about it. I don't really think your degrees can compare to an Ivy league or a Big Ten school. Get a grip you fakes. We are college football wake the hell up and quit the crap. We will dominate again if Rich Rod doesn't get it done we'll get someone who can duh, we may come get some of our coaches back . lol Like all your best ones idiots. lol We can take them too we have more money, lol and a hell of a lot better school. lol Remember Gettysburg ha ha Do you think Saban left Michigan State because of money or fear of Big Blue?Darn it, I forgot you a hilljacks aren't real smart are you? See Ya! Your games are boring too. I've tried to watch them, but can't they are boring.

MICHAEL H - Quit holding your breath. You keep predicting all these sanctions are going to come down on USC football for what two sports agents may have done with two individual players they wanted to sign as clients once they left USC. There are not going to be any significant penalties because there has been no significant wrong doing by USC.

Michigan stands a better chance of sanctions than USC does.
