Marshall football coach Mark Snyder resigns

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP)—Marshall football coach Mark Snyder resigned Sunday, a day after the Thundering Herd lost 52-21 to UTEP to finish the regular season at 6-6.

Snyder, who went 21-37 in five seasons, said in a news release that he made the decision after meeting earlier in the day with athletic director Mike Hamrick.

Snyder, a 1988 Marshall graduate, said the two men agreed his resignation was in the best interests of the program.

“It has been an honor to be the coach here and I will always be appreciative of the opportunity my university gave me,” Snyder said in the statement. “I want to thank all of the fans for their support and all of my players and assistant coaches for their hard work and dedication. I wish the program nothing but the best.”

Marshall athletic spokesman Randy Burnside said assistant coach Rick Minter would serve as interim coach if Marshall plays in a bowl game and the other assistant coaches would be retained for a bowl.

Hamrick said a search for a permanent head coach will begin immediately.

When Hamrick was hired on July 20, he said he would take a wait-and-see approach on Snyder’s handling of the team.

“I want to thank Mark for his five years of service to Marshall University,” Hamrick said. “He is a Marshall guy and we wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

Marshall lost three of its last four games, becoming bowl eligible on its third attempt two weeks ago in a 34-31 win over SMU.

Attendance at Marshall home games fell steadily under Snyder and fans became increasingly agitated over the team’s performances.

Marshall’s stadium was half empty for its final three home games and the team averaged 22,236 in attendance this season, the lowest under Snyder and 2,000 fewer per game than a year ago.

Snyder came to Marshall just before the start of spring practice in 2005 after four seasons as an assistant at Ohio State. His hiring coincided with Marshall’s move from the Mid-American Conference to Conference USA. But Snyder never produced a winning season and Marshall hasn’t been to a bowl since 2004.

Snyder had more than three years left on his contract but hadn’t received a contract extension since 2006.

Mark Snyder is a mediocre coach . His recruiting is narrowly focused on a few states, and he can draw only third tier athletes. He lost many games with stupid decisions and a lack of creativity. He needs to go to another program and recognize that he is no more than an assistant coach at best. Probably a nice guy, but certainly not a football genius .
Marshall's AD needs to find a true football coach who is adept at recruiting . They need to open the purses up for the program if they expect to compete with some of the big boys. There is too much history at stake to get this wrong again. Find someone with name recognition that kids want to play for.
And for the jackass ( Mesa Tx) who did not know who Marshall is , I knew they grew them stupid in Texas, but this guy lives under a rock !

Mike Hamrick ruined the football programs at ECU (which has only recently recovered) and UNLV (which hasn't) and he will do the same to Marshall. Good luck to Coach Snyder and to the next fool who agrees to work for Hamrick.

Mark Snyder can look in the mirror and be proud of the person he sees.
I wish him the very best in all his future endeavors.

Marshall will never succeed until they have the proper backing of the school Snyder and his staff are the lowest paid in conference USA and the facilities are below par for a conference of that size.
And Snyder came in with no right before spring drills and no recruting class of his own and to help him out Marshall got put on scholarship limits due to past violations
Good luck coach Snyder and prove them all wrong by releasing you I have no doubt you have what it takes to succeed.
From a Ironton grad class of 1986

I think that Mark Snyder is a descent coach, but I also believe that he was set up to fail being put in the situation he was put in as a 1st time head coach. These circumstances would have been hard for an expierenced head coach. Marshall really needs to look at some successful 1-AA Head Coaches or Successful Head Coaches in small conferences. Marshall needs to open up the purse and go after someone with a proven track record as a head coach. The Fans as well as the University deserves that. This program can not go backwards. To much had been sacrificed for Marshall to come as far as it has. Do not settle for less than what you deserve. Good Luck and Go Herd!!
