Louisville fires coach Steve Kragthorpe

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP)—Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich needed less than 48 hours to hire Steve Kragthorpe nearly three years ago, confident the coach who turned around the moribund program at Tulsa could keep the surging Cardinals atop the Big East.

The honeymoon lasted until the fourth quarter of Kragthorpe’s first game.

Three seasons, zero bowl games, 21 losses and thousands of empty seats at Cardinal Stadium later, Jurich knew it was time to move on.

“It just didn’t seem like the right fit from Day One,” Jurich said Saturday, shortly after firing Kragthorpe following a 4-8 season, the program’s worst in over a decade.

Kragthorpe went 15-21 in three seasons after replacing the massively successful Bobby Petrino in January 2007. He had two years remaining on a contract that paid him about $1.1 annually, and Jurich said Kragthorpe will receive a $2.2 million buyout.

It’s an expensive parting gift, but one Jurich felt necessary after watching the Cardinals slip from national title contenders to Big East also-rans. The Cardinals went 5-16 in conference play under Kragthorpe and perhaps even worse, failed to beat rival Kentucky in three attempts.

“I was hoping we’d get over the hump this year,” Jurich said. “I thought we could get through the year and really build some momentum and obviously that didn’t happen.”

Kragthorpe declined comment on Saturday but is expected to speak publicly on Monday.

The search for his replacement will begin immediately. The list of candidates could include Houston coach Kevin Sumlin, Florida defensive coordinator Charlie Strong and former Tennessee coach Phil Fulmer.

“I want to get a great leader of men and somebody that will take us to the heights we want to be at,” Jurich said.

Finding someone who can sell tickets wouldn’t hurt either.

A crowd of 23,422 turned out for a 34-14 loss to Rutgers on Friday. Several fans brought homemade signs voicing their displeasure with the direction of the program while others wore paper bags over their heads.

Even worse were the number of fans who didn’t show up at all.

Louisville averaged just over 32,000 at the 42,000-seat stadium, down from more than 41,000 during Petrino’s last season. With Cardinal Stadium expanding to 55,000 seats in time for the 2010 opener against Kentucky, Kragthorpe’s inability to connect with the Louisville fan base became painfully obvious.

“For everything he did in his life, he got hammered for,” Jurich said. “I don’t think there was anything right he could do.”

Despite the outside pressure, Kragthorpe remained popular with his players. Nearly two dozen left or were asked to leave as part of a locker room purge during his first 18 months on the job, which led to better unity on the sidelines, if not between the lines.

“Even though we didn’t have the wins that we wanted, Coach K was a great coach,” said junior wide receiver Doug Beaumont. “He showed us more than just the life of football. He showed us the life outside of football (and) our character off the field.”

But he was unable to find any sustained success on it.

His stay began with a top-10 ranking and whispers of a national title shot after Kragthorpe helped persuade star quarterback Brian Brohm to return for his senior season.

By the fourth quarter of his first game against Murray State, fans were already restless. They booed when the Cardinals decided to settle for a field goal while up 70-10 rather than tack on another meaningless touchdown.

Louisville quickly tumbled from the rankings following a last-second loss to Kentucky in his third game on the job and finished 6-6 that season. The Cardinals started 5-2 last year before losing their last five games, including a nationally televised 63-14 loss to Rutgers.

Kragthorpe came forward the next day and pledged to turn the program around while acknowledging his window of opportunity was closing.

On Saturday, following the worst season since the Cardinals went 1-10 in 1997, the window shut for good. A program that was blossoming three years ago after going 12-1 and winning the Orange Bowl now is in full rebuilding mode.

And unlike Kragthorpe’s speedy hire, which came 44 hours after Petrino bolted for the NFL, Jurich is in no rush to hire his replacement.

“I’m not going to intrude on anybody that’s playing right now,” he said.

Besides, it may take him awhile to find the money. Paying Kragthorpe for his troubles will “strap” the athletic department, according to Jurich. That doesn’t mean he plans on settling.

“I’ve got to find a way to go out and get a great one,” Jurich said.

Contrary to what we believe, Louisville is not a hotbed of sports. We had to overpay Pitino to become a good team. Repeat GOOD! Our program did go do go down when John L. left. Petrino made a run with John L's players along with some atheletes of his own, but he left the team with thugs and little talent. Good coaches are going to bolt from here to a better job unless we overpay them. Then we have to get recruits and keep them. Louisville is a great city, but the fans here are a tad bit arrognant and ignorant. We need to build up and stick with whomever we bring in and keep our goals attainable!

I have no idea why Jurich is not going after the coaches from TCU or Boise St. These are two of the hottest coaches in the NCAA. The guy at Boise St. has went 2 of 3 seasons undefeated. This guy is the real deal. Just my two cents!

    Go Cards.

you havent got a clue. RESEARCH UL athletics. U of L better hope they dont lose Mr. Jurich. He has most definitely had the midas touch all across the board there,(there IS more than mens B-ball and football here). Everyones allowed a strikes out once in a while, Coach K just didnt fit. He inherited a team full of promise and potential, for whatever reason didnt deliveer that 1st year. EXTREME no-no with this fickle fanbase in Louisville.and BTW....the last FB coach fired here was LOOONNNGG ago....Ron Cooper.... honestly daniel you sound to me like the typically DIS-LOYAL UL fan, I heard those rumblins round town last year bout MR. Jurich.

from a loyal UK #"1a", and UL #"1b" fan livin in Lou....and PROUD of everything but MOST of our"fickle"fans

A few points from Louisville, :
    1. Mr Jurich is GOLDEN for the University of Louisville. Do some research on the Athletic depts.amny achievements since his arrival.Which began with the very ugly task, driven by fans...(more on that later) of pushing Denny off the bench.

    2. Jurich WONT make a mistake twice here on this hire, watch n see.The man does his homework. Guarantee he already has in mind who he wants and he'll get his 1st or 2nd choice, contrary to what the fans, blogs or detractors may have to say.

    3. Yes dearies, you can both recruit for AND compete for a National Title in both the big east conference and at the University of Louisville. .... in football...AND w/o Cars, ho's, $$$, etc. spread on recruting trail too, I might add... PARITY IS real these days, just look around. It's about gettin your name out there to the kids, remember, MR. Jurich is a genious, U of L's name will be seen.

    4. Final point. Louisville is NOT a bad sports town, folks are'nt arrogant here. BUT there's a big problem. If a team, ANY team, be it H.S., college, Pro, semi-pro, etc. wins here, then everyones a rabid fan. Let em lose and theyre yesterdays news. No loyalty to the program.... I'm a UL fan, I'm a UK fan, I'm a fan!!! I've seen UK be 1-10 and facing Tenn for it's home finale with NO hope of winning, but theres still 70,000+ crammed into Commonwealth supporting the team. I'm sure a lot of other teams have the same loyalty. It was sickening to hear the fans anxious for Coach Crum to be gone when he did'nt make final 4 after a few yrs. That man was very loyal, and to his credit, still is. He could have bolted very quickly back HOME to california after only being here a couple yrs. And dont think that was the only time the wooer's came calling either.
Best wishes to Coack K and his family, but unfortunately it really just wasn't ever a very good fit. There WAS continuity all around in 1st year and it crumbled, for whatever reason. The fans here are correct to be upset with that, and it made it near impossible to recover from. BUT their loyalty in BOOing you & their team then WAS wrong. Epmty seats unless your undefeated IS wrong.

This program CAN & WILL be on the map. The fans were upset with an issue of "loyalty" when Petrino was here and they have absolutely NO room to talk. Support your team win orlose Louisville. The sports fans of this city are why NO pro team could ever sustain any existence here...so you see there's not enough loyalty here for 98% folks to feel theyre any better than you for their teams success's round here.... 'cept for me and my grandson Noah's PRP youth FB team that is, they rock, even when they lose!!!

If they really are looking to contend for a national title, which is possible at any BCS school, especially the weak Big East, the they should hire a defensive coach. Louisville is just "soft." They need someone who can instill a mean streak into the players. The best defensive coach out there is Bud Foster from Va. Tech. Forget Charlie Strong. Foster has taken mediocre players and produced the nastiest, meanest defense in the nation over the last five years. Bottom line - select Foster who'll teach U of L to play mean, he'll hire a good offensive coordinator and Louisville will be in the top 10 every year.

this makes no sense to me, WHY do they pay people AFTER firing them? How many times have you been fired from a job and they say "well we feel bad for you so we'll pay your next 3 years wages" Then consider they will have to pay the new coach as well. So basically they are paying for 2 head coaches????? WTF.

Fulmer would be the perfect choice in the short term, less than 10 years. He is an excellent recruiter, can coach a little football, can bring in good assistants, and will have a system which will prepare players for the NFL. He believes in good fundamental football, a strong running game, great special teams play, and of course a solid defense. Also remember this guy won a national championship at Tennessee, and more than 150 games over his career. He will put the program on solid footing, then turn it over to a younger coach. Fulmer will be an excellent choice.

Louisville should go after a hot offensive coordinator; proven mid-major coach; or an excellent recruiter that has ties to the South East or West Coast. Although it is not a destination job like Florida, Florida St, Ohio St, Texas, Alabama, Michigan, ND, USC, etc, still there is an excellent opportunity for a prospering head coach to coach at a BCS school.

Rick Bozick or however you spell his name, the writer for the Louisville newspaper, whatever that is. I remember reading an article he wrote about Louisville, he was madder than hell that Louisville was not named one of the biggest sports town in the US. He really dissed Memphis, I have lived in both cities Louisville and Memphis, sorry but Memphis is a better sports town and well really all around better town. It is this kind of thinking that is in the mindset of Louisville in general, we are better than everyone when really your not. I sure saw lots of empty seats at every Louisville game I watched this year., not exactly the support that a self proclaimed super sports town should have since the Cardinals are the only game in town. Oh, well, done wasting time on this subject, you have your opinion and I have mine. As a side note, you do not want Tommy Tubberville, he is a smug idiot. When Auburn, whom I hate, let him go, his mom was talking to the local media about how Auburn had fired little Tommy. Now come on Louisville, do you really want that as a coach?
