No. 15 Iowa loses Stanzi ahead of trip to Columbus

  • Print

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP)—Talk about a tough day for the Hawkeyes.

Iowa lost its quarterback, its unbeaten season and likely any shot to play for the national title in Saturday’s 17-10 defeat to Northwestern. Next up is a trip to Columbus to face No. 10 Ohio State, which knocked off Penn State in Happy Valley to pull into a tie with the 15th-ranked Hawkeyes for first place in the Big Ten.

Iowa (9-1, 5-1) still has its sights set on Pasadena, but not it’s for the Rose Bowl rather than the BCS title game. The Hawkeyes can clinch a share of the Big Ten championship with a win over the Buckeyes, but they may have to do it behind freshman quarterback James Vandenberg.

Ricky Stanzi sustained a severe ankle sprain in the second quarter against the Wildcats (6-4, 3-3). Coach Kirk Ferentz compared his injury to the sprain suffered by running back Adam Robinson, and Robinson isn’t expected back until Iowa’s bowl game.

Stanzi’s day ended when he was drilled in the end zone with the Hawkeyes leading 10-0. The Wildcats recovered Stanzi’s fumble for a touchdown, bringing them back into a game they would take control of with another touchdown before halftime.

“It’s a good play on their part, bad play on ours. Cost us a touchdown and a quarterback, unfortunately,” Ferentz said.

Though Stanzi often put Iowa in major holes, his absence is now the biggest hole for an offense that wasn’t all that great to begin with.

That was never more evident than against Northwestern. Vandenberg, seeing his first extended action, was 9 of 27 for 82 yards, and his first pass was an interception that set up what turned out to be the Wildcats’ winning touchdown.

Though Vandenberg had been listed as the co-backup all season with fellow freshman John Wienke, it appears Vandenberg will make his first career start in Columbus.

His lack of experience is due largely to Iowa’s remarkable string of close victories.

The Hawkeyes haven’t been able to play backups late in games, so Vandenberg had thrown just three passes before stepping in for Stanzi on Saturday. It looked that way, too, when he threw four straight incompletions to end Iowa’s final drive.

“He’s a quality football player. We’ve felt good about him all along. Just unfortunate he hasn’t had a chance to play more this year,” Ferentz said. “He’ll be a better player next week and he’ll be better the week after.”

For Northwestern, the win over Iowa was by far the biggest victory of a season that, up until Saturday, hadn’t gone quite the way the Wildcats expected.

They needed a 25-point rally to stun Indiana 29-28 on Oct. 24, and Penn State thumped them 34-13 last week after quarterback Mike Kafka went down with a hamstring injury.

The Wildcats went to a two-quarterback system to protect Kafka while still getting him on the field, and Dan Persa responded with 67 yards rushing and a touchdown pass.

Northwestern has reached bowl eligibility with two games left. The Wildcats travel to Illinois next week and host No. 21 Wisconsin in the season finale.

“We’re starting to play our best football of the year,” Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald said. “It has nothing to do with Iowa. It has everything to do with us.”

The irony of Iowa’s 13-game winning streak being snapped on Saturday was that it started in the 10th game of last season, when the Hawkeyes stunned then-unbeaten Penn State in Iowa City.

That defeat left the Nittany Lions out of the national title picture and hoping instead for a Rose Bowl bid—and Iowa now faces a similar situation.

Penn State swept its last two games to land a spot in Pasadena, and the banged-up Hawkeyes are hoping to do the same.

“Everything is out there,” Ferentz said. “Our guys know what’s going on. They can look at the scoreboard. They figure all that stuff out. If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be. We’re going to try to get back on our feet and see if we can’t win next weekend. That’s going to be a tough task. We know that already.”

Iowa goes down in flames Saturday. Cheer up there's always the Cap one or Outback bowl. People here in Ohio say Ohio State struggles on the national stage because we play in a weak conference. I will have to agree it has hurt Ohio State more then helped. Time for the Big Ten to man up and quit whining about the Buckeyes in the BCS or NC games all the time. You say we are arrogant , we say you are jealous. Big 12 fan, if your name isn't Texas quit embarrassing yourself.

and once again I'm left wondering if the Hawks will ever punch the Buckeyes in the face and actually win a football game against them....the only way this happens this weekend is if the Defense scores points and the running game produces dramatic gains and moves the ball because this QB just can't throw 2 times per set of downs. O'Keefe needs to start from scratch and figure out a way to run the offense to his QB's skill set.

Yes if vandenburg can get some timing with these recievers we deffinitly have a chance in this game. Though I do respect Ohio State and their D so it might be really hard, but there is always hope. Hopefully this will still be a good game and our offense will be able to get at least something going. Looking forward to it either way, it's been a great season so far.

In my opinion, this game is a no win situation for OSU. First off if they win, then you will hear the critics talk about how they backed into the championship due to Iowa being beat up and missing so many players.

If Iowa wins, well then I think everyone can figure out what would be said about OSU.

Myself, I say no excuses for Iowa, next man in.

    Go Hawks!

well put ChadB........that guys a complete d-bag.......But I personally think Clark sucked on Saturday.......then had a bunch of lame excuses.........boy did he blow it..........Ohio State will certainly win out...........Usc - vs - Ohio State would be a great rose bowl............perfect setting for some payback..........Sorry Iowa, you had your chance.....but you can't lose late in the season..........OSU has learned that the hard way as well.......

    See ya Saturday Iowa.........Go Bucks!

    Hey post#43

What do you smoke these days? The reason PSU played like crap Saturday is because the BEST defense in the Big Ten kicked their butts all over the football field. NOBODY in OSU territory thinks Penn State sucks. Well coached and they have talented football players. You better have lots of tissues for Saturday's game because THE Ohio State Buckeyes are going to bury the Hawkeyes!!

#31 - We care about Stanzi not because he was an unbelievable QB, but because we'd like to have someone who has played more than a half going into the biggest game of the season! But basically, if Stanzi can accomplish that much without being a superstar, at least we can hope Vandenburg can pull off a win!

Well the OSU game is still the one that will determine their season, if Iowa can beat OSU at the Horseshoe with a QB making his first start and the conference championship on the line, I don't care where they wind up ranked that would be THE most incredible victory of the season. Their D still gives them a chance, even in the loss NW only got 1 TD from their offense on a 40 yard drive, and they've held Wisconsin, PSU, and MSU to one TD each.
They can win this game if their offense does not give easy TDs to OSU and their D plays like it has all season.

Good question, "E". As far as the Big Ten's automatic birth in the BCS is concerned, the tiebreaker is head-to-head competition. What this means is that the winner of this week's game between Ohio State and Iowa will not only clinch a Big Ten co-championship, but also the BCS automatic bowl bid (presumably the Rose Bowl).

Overall record (which at this point would favor Iowa) would be a 3rd tie-breaker if Ohio State and Iowa didn't play one another, but obviously that's a moot point this season. So this Saturday's game is the defacto Big Ten Championship, irrespective of what happens to OSU and Iowa the following weeks.

    Hope that clarifies matters:-)

What is the tiebreaker for college football? Head to head or overall records?

Just thinking (could be dangerous) - Iowa loses to OSU - OSU then loses the next week to Michigan - Iowa beats the Gophers

Is OSU still going to the Rose? They would have 3 overall loses and Iowa would have only 2.

Should be a good game this weekend. Go Hawks!

Well IOWA took a big hit when Stanzi got hurt. That opens up the door fopr OSU to win this weekend and move on to the Rose Bowl. Northwestern picks up a win and the next 2 games for IOWA look doubtful. Too win against OSU IOWA's Defense needs to have a great game, Vandenberg needs to play effective and not make mistakes (no over-reaching) and Proyor needs to have a so-so game. Quite a stretch but possible. But I suspect OSU will collect a win and then IOWA has to rebound and deal with Minnesota at home. '

It will be interesting to see what Bowl game IOWA gets when Stanzi returns. Still...........the way IOWA finds ways to win I won't count them out of either game or the Rose Bowl.

Schmuckeye fans always make me laugh. They always say Penn Ptate sucks, but then they make a big deal out of it if they beat PSU. so which is it, schmuckeyes? Either Penn State is an important game that means a lot to your season if you win, or a worthless game you should always win because you're so arrogant? Er, I mean, superior? By the way, PSU didn't even show up Sat. Nobody who loves the Blue and White knows what the hell happened, except PSU played like crap.

All you folks talking about the Big 10 and PAC-10 and your championships need to wake up and see what's going on, man. I'm talking about the mightly Temple Owls of the MAC. We're starting a new tradition here. The Owls are no one's bit$#@'s anymore. We're gonna win the MAC, then the Motor City Bowl and then the world, baby, the world is our oyster. The next decade belongs to the Cherry and White.

    Fellow Buckeye fan,

Let's not be too confident. If our team can focus like against PSU, then I like to think we'll get the job done. We didn't have Herron against Purdue. Could that have made a difference? Who knows, but Iowa is at a slight disadvantage. I wish they had a healthy team.

    In response to post 23...
About the ONLY "what if" or "If only" ISU has ever had is "what if we were in a smaller conference" or "If only we got to play in Drake's Conference instead of getting hammered by EVERY Big 12 team out there on a regular basis..." Every dog has its day, and occassionally ISU will rise to the challenge, but theres a reason 4/5ths of the population of Iowa, and 11/12ths of the Big 12 call you guys the cyCLOWNs. I helped build that stadium, and rarely if ever point that out to my friends. (hangs head in shame)
