Georgia’s Ealey says Spikes shouldn’t be suspended

  • Print

ATHENS, Ga. (AP)—A most unlikely person came to the defense of Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes, who was suspended for half a game for apparently trying to gouge the eyes of Georgia running back Washaun Ealey

Ealey said Tuesday he doesn’t believe Spikes should have been suspended.

In fact, Ealey seemed surprised the play from Saturday’s game drew so much attention.

Florida coach Urban Meyer on Monday suspended Spikes for the first half of this week’s game against Vanderbilt after the defensive captain stuck his hand in Ealey’s helmet and appeared to try to stick his fingers in Ealey’s eyes.

Ealey says he doesn’t agree with those who have said the suspension was not stiff enough.

“That really didn’t matter to me,” Ealey said of the suspension. “That’s their decision. He shouldn’t, I think, get suspended at all. We were just out there playing football.”

Ealey said he had his eyes closed when Spikes stuck his hand in his helmet and he wasn’t hurt.

“He really didn’t gouge my eyes,” Ealey said. “He really didn’t get a chance to get close to my eyes.”

The freshman said he believes similar incidents happen all the time.

“I’m pretty sure it goes on back and forth,” he said. “We probably do it and other teams do too. It’s all football. We’re just out there trying to have fun.”

Top-ranked Florida beat Georgia 41-17. The Bulldogs play Tennessee Tech on Saturday.

On Monday, Spikes issued an apology.

“I accept responsibility for my actions and I accept the consequences of my actions,” Spikes said. “I would like to apologize to my team and the coaching staff and Washaun Ealey. Football is a very physical and emotional game, but there is no excuse for my actions.”

The Southeastern Conference issued a statement on Monday saying it reviewed and accepted the discipline handed down by Florida.

Meyer said he believed Spikes retaliated after getting his helmet ripped off and eye poked earlier in the game.

Georgia coach Mark Richt said Spikes’ “helmet went flying off … and there was one time he got hit with his helmet off.”

“It was totally unintentional,” Richt said. “They were totally just playing ball. That might have got him bent out of shape. I don’t know about all of that.”

Ealey carried 17 times for 70 yards against the Gators.

“It was just a lot of emotion in the game,” he said. “We were out there fighting. It was a big rivalry game. Everybody was just out there talking trash back and forth. … We were just out there playing football and having fun.”

Notes: Richt said Caleb King will start over Ealey at tailback in Saturday’s game against Tennessee Tech. Richt said King has the edge in pass-blocking but said Ealey “will continue to play.” Ealey has started the last two games. … Richt said he hopes top receiver A.J. Green, who will miss this week’s game with a pulmonary contusion, can return to play against Auburn on Nov. 14.

doesnt matter what team, division, conference, age group, etc....... this person deliberately attacked a defenseless person with intent. I believe that with modern day technology, all plays should be replayed and penalties, suspensions, fines, etc... should be handed out. Busy intersections, toll booths, and parking lots to name a few, have cameras to catch the individuals who dont play by the rules of life. Are we to assume that a football game is above the law just because it's a "rough sport"? Meyer should at the very least step up and kick the player off the team as should any coach who catches any player doing anything like this. This goon is a criminal. He has committed a crime against a fellow human being. what are we teaching these goons in college? Make no doubt about it this animal meant to hurt this player. He could have possibly blinded this player. This world has no checks and balances. At the end of this season, if UF wins the championship, the media will tell us all how great Meyer is. Step up Meyer and set an example and start ridding this sport of this kind of behavior. Is winning games that important? Whats next? Players carrying weapons on the field, and if so, whats the penalty? No desert.

...Lets see if you rip your helmet off in the field of play..that is unsportsman- like conduct...a personal foul..15 yard penalty and first down..when Mount Cody blocked the field goal against Tennessee..he immediately ripped his helmet off in the field of play..SEC game..SEC officials...no harm ..no foul..why reward Tennessee with a first down and 15 yard penalty and a chance to kick another field goal..i guess thats why we have rules of conduct and the discretion to overlook them when we feel like...why take away from a great play..we Know Tennessee deserved to lose anyway..right..

..Lets see you pull a 38 and fire at someone and miss...oh well..no harm ..no foul...the question is what was the intent...what is the consequence of missing..would it not be the same as connecting with the intended target...Florida..Florida...its a Thug Life..Its a Thug life......Urban Meyer...Shame on you..Shame on you...Are you proud to be a part of Gator Nation....Its a Thug Life...

It's a sad day for Florida football and college football in general when this sort of action is treated as if it's "no big deal". I view it much more henious than the Blount incident. Blount was charged up after a big loss and was honestly grabbed first by the player he eventiallly hit. His action was reaction. Now this isn't to say Blount didn't deserve suspension, rather it suggest that Spikes candidly deserves a lot worse. He did his "gouging" thing intentionally and with no purpose other than to "hurt" this defensless opposing player. Hey, this isn't the NFL....This spikes kid is a punk and thug and his actions confirm both. Worse yet, the whimpy gesture of a whole "half" suspension for an intentional act that had the potential to seriously hurt a defensless player is embarassing to the entire Univeristy of Florida if not the SEC as a whole. Think Meyer would of suspended him for even a half if he were player alabama this week? Meyer should be ashamed. What's worse is.... Meyer thinks this is all that this kind of adhorrent behavior justifies...losing a hlaf a game against Vandy...woooo...the horror...just what sort of scumbag program is he running.....another Miami?

Thanks Ricky. People can find conspiracies anywhere when they don't want to face the truth. Florida's been on a roll the past few years and people don't like it. Will it last forever? No. Things go in cycles. I'm enjoying it while it lasts. When the next team hits their high spot all the people attacking Fl will change their focus and take aim in that direction. The fans of that team will be the next group of "classless and hypocritical" fans. I'm comfortable wearing the bullsyeye right now. Will they be?

Susan B. that's the most sense anyone has made all day.

The conspiracy theories abound. Seems that people believe that UF owns all of college football from the refs all the way to the top of the NCAA. Oh, and the media too. I guess that makes UF the most powerful and elite school in the nation.

People love conspiracy theories so I'll make up another one. There are fans of other schools who are hoping beyond hope that their team will get a shot at FL in the NC yet they're worried that they won't be able to quite pull off a win if they get there. That FL defense can be intimitading to say the least. So, low and behold, a Gator finally makes a big mistake. Not just any Gator, but Spikes. The mistake gets caught on tape and posted to You Tube for all to see. Fans see their chance. Let's play shock and dismay, horror and disgust at what we see. Let's claim it's impossible that anything like this is done by any other player and they get away with it. Let's create a firestorm so big that we force the #1 defensive player on the #1 team to be benched for the rest of the season. Maybe, just maybe, if we get a shot at the Gators we can beat them if we get Spikes off the field. While we're at it, let's take the opportunity to drag Meyer and Tebow through the mud with him.

There, how's that? Makes just about as much sense as believing that all the refs, the media, the SEC, the BCS and the NCAA are in FL's back pocket.

Mike - you are either clueless or completely ill informed. Blount wasn't suspended for ONE punch. He was suspended for the rampage that ensued. He not only went at it with his own players, he went after fans and got in a scuffle with Security.... Hardly the ONE PUNCH scenerio you are making it out to be. Spikes was suspended for ATTEMPTING to do wrong to a platyer that was unaware of what happened. OBVIOUSLY both penalties fit the crime. Get over it whiny boy!

23andsumchange, you been talking a lot of smack lately, and you do have that right, but let me remind you of a kid that once graced these pages, with that same smack talking, he suddenly disappeared after Oregon gave USC their jock straps, so just a friendly reminder, you know, a lot of people come on these threads blasting off about the SEC aint this and the SEC aint that, now, i have been watching that lil trap of yours doing a lot of boasting about what Texas is going to do to Bama or Florida and just going on and on, you be a little more carefull with that talking now, its easy to do that, ya know ?, i understand you're excited about your team getting a chance at the crown, but i suggest you keep your feet on the grown for now, ok ? i'll be watching you now.
