Georgia QB Joe Cox keeps job after ‘reality check’

  • Print

ATHENS, Ga. (AP)—Joe Cox has only four games left to help Georgia salvage its season.

For one scary day this week, the quarterback feared he’d lost that chance.

After taking one day earlier this week to consider benching Cox, coach Mark Richt is sticking with the starter for Saturday’s game against Tennessee Tech.

Cox threw three interceptions in Georgia’s 41-17 loss to top-ranked Florida last Saturday. Quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo told Cox on Sunday the coaches were considering a change. Richt met with Cox on Monday and said the decision to stick with Cox was unanimous among the coaches.

The coaches’ vote was a confidence boost for Cox, but it didn’t totally erase the day he spent fearing he’d lost the starting job.

“It meant a lot, but at the same time I still had in the back of my mind that they were still considering making a change,” Cox said. “That’s a reality check.”

The wait for a verdict from Richt and Bobo took only one day, but it was a difficult day for Cox, who was Matthew Stafford’s backup the last three years.

“I didn’t feel very good,” Cox said. “I felt like I really let something slip away that I had really been working hard for. But at the end of the day, it’s a bottom-line business and if they felt a change would have helped, that’s not my call. I knew it was out of my hands and I just had to hope for the best.”

Cox knows he’s not the only reason Georgia won’t win the Southeastern Conference or play in a major bowl this season. Georgia (4-4, 3-3 SEC) has problems at more than one position.

The quarterback can’t be blamed for Georgia giving up more points or rushing for fewer yards per game than any team in the conference.

Cox says it made sense for the coach to consider a switch.

“That’s just part of football,” he said. “If things aren’t going well, sometimes you have to make changes to do something that can cause a spark.”

Cox has completed 131 of 229 passes for 1,746 yards with 15 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He ranks third in the conference with 218.2 passing yards per game—but he’s thrown at least one interception in every game.

“You’ve got to really look at yourself and how you’re performing and see what you can do to make it better the last four weeks of the season,” he said. “I was glad (Richt) told me what he told me and now it’s just a matter of working hard and just finishing up these last four weeks strong.”

Cox’s teammates were aware of the talk of a possible change at quarterback. The deliberation by Richt and his staff was accompanied by public speculation.

“It’s something that I’m sure hurt Joe a little bit hearing somebody say he shouldn’t be the starter, but Joe is a tremendous worker,” said tight end Aron White. “We know that the people that matter are out there on the practice field and we’re not going to let outside opinions affect the way we practice or the way we prepare.”

Linebacker Rennie Curran said the decision to stick with Cox was “huge.”

“This season has really tested our character, and it’s great to know that you have coaches that believe in you even if you make mistakes,” Curran said.

Richt plans to play sophomore Logan Gray behind Cox this week. There is no plan to play freshman Aaron Murray, who is headed for a redshirt year. Murray is listed ahead of another freshman, Zach Mettenberger.

“My feeling is this: If you’re going to put a freshman in there, you start him and you start him the rest of the way,” Richt said. “But did anybody really earn that? They didn’t. Do you think that one day they will be great players? I think yes.

“I think both those guys have got tremendous potential. We’ve got extremely high hopes for their careers, but to say one guy earned it over another, that didn’t happen.”

Gray was 0 for 3 passing against Florida and had an interception returned by Brandon Spikes for a touchdown.

Richt said he plans to play Gray “at least a series.”

“You hate to promise any more than that because sometimes things will make you decide not to do that,” Richt said. “We did want him to know that we do want him to play, that he will play, so prepare your mind and body for that.”

Richt really is too soft. It takes a bastard to win.

Richt wants to be the player's best friend and not their coach. They screw up and he is so nonchalant about it. How many years have they led in penalties. Uh, you tell your players to stop or they will be benched. But no, he doesn't want to hurt their feelings. Worst college coached football I've seen in many a year.

Mark Richt is the right coach for Ga. The real Bulldog nation stands behind him. If changes are needed, and I believe they are. He will make them. He is our coach, needs to be the coach, and needs the support of the fans and the alumni. I think he has that. This is about college football, not going to war. This is about student athletics and making good players better, and becoming productive members of society. Nobody wants to win as much as those young people on the field of play. Let the coach coach and he will turn this around. Have a little faith in the UGA. Applaud the effort and the resukts will happen for the good. GO DAWGS.

Agreed on Martinez, he can't control the players emotions and has no clear cut strategy. Players look lost constantly on D. I want Joe Kines back, he was underrated. Maybe we can steal VA Tech's DC or even ECU's - they looked pretty good last night.

Lol, you Georgians will get what you deserve if you fire Richt, who is a fantastic head coach....the defensive co-ordinator needs to go, but the rest of the problems with the team don't lie with the coaching staff....

I have said this before that Georgia is a train wreck waiting to happen. The reason is because Georgia has been on a steady decline for a few years. I have previously put most of the blame on Mark Richt and his coaching staff. After watching Georgia play Florida yesterday it confirmed my initial belief that Georgia is mediocre because of the coaching staff. According to rival.com, "the Bulldogs ranked 90th in the nation in offense and 70th in defense before the game with Florida." This is a clear indication that Georgia had serious problems on both sides of the ball before the game with Florida. The offense couldn't run the ball and the defense couldn't stop the run. Another clear indicator that Georgia's coaching staff is to blame for the team's inefficiencies is the decision to start Joe Cox. Every fan, booster, and trustee who follows the game could tell 3 or 4 games ago that Cox was not the QB to lead Georgia out of its 2nd tier ranking in the SEC. Cox should have been benched 3 or 4 games ago. Now we hear Mark Richt talk about the possibility of changing QB.

Mark Richt as head coach has failed in his efforts to hire the best candidates for the OC and DC positions. Bobo and Martinez should not come back next season. If Mark Richt continues in his quest to be Mr. Cool instead of an assertive head coach on the sideline then we need to say good bye to him and wish him well. I know Joe Cox was trying to rally the troops when he got the whole team together to celebrate a touchdown. The problem I have with this celebration is that it wasn't coach initiated. I didn't think the team had much to celebrate about or deserved to celebrate after the touchdown because of their poor performance throughout the game. Besides they were still trailing in the game. If I was Mark Richt I would have told Cox and the team that this is not the time for team celebration while still trailing in the game. This is another subtled sign that Richt and his staff is not mentally in control of the team. I believe that he and his staff have lost the players locker room.

If Mark Richt wants to save his job, he really does need to seperate it from other aspects of his life. Im proud that we "Ga. Bulldogs" have a christian man as our head football coach and a man who is loyal as well but when your 4 million dollar a year livelyhood is to produce a championship calibur football program, there comes a time when you have to seperate things. Martinez just isnt cut out to be a defensive coordinator and Bobo isnt as good of an offensive coordinator as he was a quarterback (and that was just average at best). Richt is drafting strong talent and good kids but the coaching staff isnt getting the job done. Im watching the rest of the SEC teams try to upscale their staffs while Georgia's hire from within attempt is sending us in a downward spiral. If Mark Richt wants to keep his elite job he needs to begin to make the needed changes or people are going to want his head instead of the no count coordinators that need to go ASAP

When your defense cannot stop the quarterback from scoring more rushing touch downs than Hershel Walker, YOU HAVE A COACHING PROBLEM! Willie Martinez sucked last year and even worse this year. Mark Richt cannot separate FOOTBALL SATURDAY from CHURCH SUNDAY.
The coaches that are winners in the SEC are FLA

What would Georgia be if it were a dinosaur?

    Choke-a-potamus.

What would Georgia be if it had a serious addition?

    Choke-a-holic.

What would Georgia be if it were a small engine part?

    The Choke.

What would Georgia be if it were an alcoholic drink?

    Choke and Rum.

I'm about ready to start a petition asking all the Bulldawg nation to start boycotting the games and stop buying the UGA gear until Mark Richt gives a crap about what we (the fans) think, and fires his non-producing church buddy assistant coaches. Maybe we even need to get him out. He can't get us to the next level. 2002-so close with the SEC championship, but we lost to UF, so no BCS Title. 2003-choke in the SEC Title Game to LSU. 2004-Finally beat UF, and choke to UT and Auburn. 2005-lose to UF (again!) lose to Auburn (otherwise victory over LSU in SEC title game gives us BCS title game), and choke in Sugar Bowl to WVU? 2006-4 out of 5 games losses (enough said). 2007-Choke to UT and USC, don't even get into SEC game. 2008-Preseason #1 (by hype only) and choke to crap head GT, which will now start getting the Georgia recruits. 2009- A freaking train wreck, and Mark Richt sitting on the sideline as calm as a Sunday morning in a field of daisies. Bulldog faithful, RICHT IS NOT THE MAN TO GET US THERE!!!! He will just keep breaking our hearts, choking on the games that really matter, and keep cashing those FAT paychecks, while us lowly fans ( who by the way don't matter), keep putting money up for him to ride around in the nice Lincoln truck! If any bulldog out there supports what I am saying, let me know. I want to get a website dedicated to doing something about this if I think others will stand up with me!

It is sad that Tebow believes he has to be 95% of the offense to win. We'll see how great the Gators are next year without him if he is all you have in order to win. And if he Tebow goes Pro, boy does he have a lot to learn. There is no I in team.
