Ga. Tech adds a year to Johnson’s contract

  • Print

ATLANTA (AP)—Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson agreed Friday to a one-year extension of his contract, which now runs through 2016.

Johnson initially signed a seven-year contract worth about $11 million when he came from Navy before the 2008 season. The school gave him a new seven-year, $17.7 million deal after he led the Yellow Jackets to a surprising nine wins in his debut.

His second year has been even better. No. 7 Georgia Tech (10-1) has already clinched a spot in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game, and the extension keeps Johnson’s contract at the original length.

“It goes without saying how much we value what Paul Johnson continues to do for the Georgia Tech program and the energy he has created within the Yellow Jacket family,” athletic director Dan Radakovich said. “We remain committed to Paul in every way, and we foresee a long-term relationship with much continued success in the coming years.”

Johnson is 19-5 since taking over at Georgia Tech, the highest winning percentage (.792) in school history.

“We appreciate the confidence Dan Radakovich and the Georgia Tech administration have shown in our program,” Johnson said in a statement. “We look forward to the opportunity to continue to build the program at Georgia Tech.”

I'm a UGA fan.I'm a GT fan, except when they play UGA.I feel the SEC is the toughest conference in college football, and I feel the ACC is a close second. The addition of Miami and FSU pretty much raised the level of everyone in the conference and made it stronger. If you've got a little age on you, you'll remember GT used to be in the SEC.Congrats to GT on hiring Paul Johnson. We had him here at Georgia Southern and he won a National Championship.Navy got him and he made them a quality team (hard to build quality teams in the service academies because of that pesky requirement to serve your country after graduation, which is not so cool these days). Now, he's building (built?) a Championship-caliber team at Tech.Hate to say it,but I fear The Game this year.UGA doesn't have a quarterback.Oh well!!Like in life, sometimes you're up and sometimes you're down.On average, have to say--Up.Go Dawgs!!Go Jackets!!

Let's just hope whoever we play in the BCS bowl game this year loses their copy of the film from Chick-fil-a Bowl game with LSU last year!

    Go Jackets!

oh, and go DAWGS! RIP UGA VII

Swankman, I can tell you are a typical idiot SEC fan, so I'll try to explain this slowly. First of all, you can't just JOIN a conference, it isn't the local Son's of the Confederacy chapter. Secondly, do you know how many SEC teams rank in the top 15 strength of schedule as of this week?

    http://www.teamrankings.com/college-football/ranking/strength-of-schedule-by-team

Since I know you won't look, the top 6 teams are ACC teams, Tech is #12. There is only 1, yes 1 SEC team ahead of Tech and that is Miss. State, who Tech destroyed. If SEC teams were SO STRONG, wouldn't it stand to reason that the SEC teams schedules would be regarded as strong?

Tune in and watch us in the Orange Bowl.

if Ga Tech is all that, seeing how they are in the heart of the SEC, why not JOIN the SEC, play the kind of CONFERENCE schedule of a FLA, BAMA, or LSU or UGA on a weekly basis and see how they fare then. They probably will barely make bowl eligibility...and Im a Cane fan (remember us, tech fans) and I know the ACC is a joke right now. We were almost in December and they were saying DUKE of all the teams in the ACC, playing for a spot in the conference championship game??? WTF??

Also, Oprah... is a UGA fan, no bias there of course. I love when people post as if they have no stake in a game. I am a Tech alum, so I won't hide my loyalties. Nice work attempting to hide it. Yahoo allows you to view posts that your have made on other threads. I'm just glad we didn't hire a guy that coached at another ACC school, that is akin to incest. It's a sad day when you hire a retread.

@ Spin - You, unlike your less informed counterparts, actually use facts in your argument. If only politicians learned that skill... Posters like oprah... sit protectively behind their keyboard, ranting and instigating. They typically do not have any power in their personal lives, thus they vent their frustrations here. All that being said, I don't think GT would match up well with Bama, UF, or LSU. The rest of the SEC is a joke, down from their typical glory. We all saw the embarrassing Chick Fil A Bowl last year. I did not want to answer my phone for weeks.... Coach Johnson is exactly what they need, fire and determination. When he came out said he's learned one thing about being at GT and that's "to hell with Georgia" at Alexander Memorial he showed them his mettle. I nearly shed a tear in joy!

    Oprah,

Lets look at the common opponents from the best of SEC or better, the best two teams in the country:

GT scored 42 vs Miss St. while FL scored 29, LSU scored 30 and Bama scored 31
GT scored 56 vs Vandy while FL scored 27, LSU scored 23

Keep the personal insults aside and just look at the numbers.

Xenos you're right about the 2 SEC wins for Tech, Miss State and Vandy the SEC's two worst teams. Miss State was a nail bitter for Tech. This year is just a Cinderella season for a lot of nobody teams. The clock will eventually strike midnight and the ball will be over. I'm not an SEC fan, so you can put your attempt at insults in check. The reality is you are one of the ones that super sizes my fries, washes my vehicles or cuts my grass. And that's all the future holds for you. Sorry, but just deal with it. And by all means bet your last $2.00 on the UGA game and see what happens.

I hope Weiss does stay at ND. I hate 'em both, they are a great match. The ND program has jumped the shark...the glory days are over similar to Michigan State, Army, and Navy...all great programs of the 60s. Oh and oprahsfatbutt...you're ludicrous! I can see you don't really watch the games, you just look at the box score or the names on the helmet...obviously the type of guy that thinks ND is a good school to play football at! HAHAHA. Johnson's teams are very well coached as are TCU and Cincy. They are playing in so called easier conferences...but check this out...after Tech beats UGA 30-20...they will be 3-0 v. SEC teams...that's a mouthfull! SECRules!

Tech is just taking advantage of a weak conference. Enjoy it while you can this year and next. Then reality sets back in. The Ga game ought to be interesting both of your defenses suck! But I'll have to go with UGA since their mascot died and they will be playing for instate pride. And Tech is playing on luck and arrogance. If Ga tech is in the top 10 you know the NCAA is having a very bad year. Not to mention TCU, Cincinnati and Boise State. What a joke.

I wouldn't have been too upset if Bama would have hired Paul Johnson (3rd on the short list). I don't think he would have had the same success that Coach Saban is having at Bama. But nonetheless, Johnson is an excellent coach and the right fit for Ga. Tech. Looking forward to Bama spanking Ga. Tech's ass in a couple of years!

Hmm. Another A-list coaching candidate for Notre Dame extends his contract. Is Notre Dame putting out feelers, or are these coaches/schools being proactive?

    Georgia Tech. - this week

    Stanford - last week

    ESPN/Gruden - recently

Who's next? Cincinnati, TCU, Oklahoma, etc.?

Weis might keep his job simply by default.
