Bowden says he’ll choose new defensive coordinator

  • Print

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP)—Bobby Bowden sounds like he plans to coach next year at Florida State and says he’ll choose the successor to longtime defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews.

In response to a question on Wednesday’s Atlantic Coast Conference football coaches teleconference, Bowden said he would give his designated successor, offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher, a lot of input in the selection, but that he would make the final decision.

Andrews announced his intention Tuesday to retire after 26 seasons at Florida State.

Bowden, who turns 80 Sunday, is on a year-to-year deal at Florida State with a final option for the 2010 season since the school has promised $5 million to Fisher if he is not the head coach by January 2011.

Gator fan here. Bobby Bowdens contribution to FSU, The Athletic Program(s), and to his players is worth twice as much as what he has been paid. He brought FSU from obscurity to a viable team. Bowden will retire at the end of next year and Jimbo will be the Head coach. I think it is a shame the people bash him and equate his performance as a coach to that of a senile old fart with nothing else to contribute. suffice it to say that people treat our war vets this way as well and it is shameful. I used to look for the UF FSU rivalry with two titans Spurrier and Bowden dukin it out on the gridiron. Oh..They have a statue of Bobby on campus don't they? You can't fire a legend or make him quit just like he taught his players to never quit. Go Bobby and make these your finest days yet!!!

FSU owes Bowden nothing at this point. He was paid for each season he coached and cut some slack over the past several years. I should point out that Miami has won 4 national titles, UF three and FSU 2. FSU had access to the talent in Florida for a long time and the NC count has FSU behind the other - and now it is losing ground to USF.
Bowden is showing no honor for his role and no respect for FSU and its players - its an ego thing between him and Paterno. I say his reputation is being badly damaged. Lets face it - they could easily end up with a losing record this year.

Bowden should just step down and turn the Coaching regime over to his successor. Bobby has done all he can at FSU and his hanging around will not improve FSU's playing. His coaching staff is in turmoil and it is just time for him to retire and move on. The FSU athletic director should just bring in a new coach and let that coach hire his own staff.

Hey Bobby, You can leave when you want, you built that program. Just don't pick any DC's by the names of Jeff, Terry or Tommy.

Bowden should retire; He walks the sidelines making $2-3 mill/year watching Jumbo call plays/runs team. That is a joke! What do they tell recruits.

Bowden should make the decision! Its his team not Jimbo's.
Chuck Amato should be given the defensive job.
    Jimbo should be kicked out.
Lets look very closely for a new head coach before Bobby's resignation.!
    In Bobby's do time.
Joe Paterno please quit. You will never be as good as Bobby is!!!

#32....How are those Bucs doing this year? A typical toothless Gator fan.."growns"?...its "moans and groans", you moron. Why do idiots post worthless opinions if you don't care about the team? Anyone with real respect or maybe even a real life isn't logging onto the website of your bandwagon team or some team that you think is great because your dad liked them and posting some dumb opinion. If you are not doing that, then why click on the link about the story???...uhhh...(a scenario for the vast amount of confused is about to ensue) "I have nothing better to do, so I'll head over to the LSU webpage or click on this link about Les Miles and post about how I don't like tigers and then I'll end it with some dumb comment about the team I think is great, but really sucks"...GET A LIFE & LEARN TO DRIVE!!!!! Now that that's out of the way...oh happy day!!!!

    Valhalla - TRUE! TRUE!

I guess my father was wrong when he told us that on pay day everything is easy and it's time to prove yourself again. NOT REALLY! I wonder how long the people that say he's owed would be working for their current employer if their production dropped as low as Bobby's has.

#13 - If BB was in the top 5 he would be a successful coach doing what he gets paid the big bucks to do. Of course everyone would be happy.

The problem is he isn't doing what he's paid to do, so people get upset.

Let's look at the "he deserves to go out when he wants to argument." If your doctor was a genius who pionered new lifesaving procedures, but has since become senile and has a shaky hand, do you want him doing surgery on you. His procedures have saved countless lives so doesn't he deserve to go out when he chooses to do so.

Obviously it would be better for him to leave gracefully, but that window is closing.

Why on earth is Bowden insisting on naming the next DC?

And the winner is JEFF BOWDEN. Look at it this way....there is no way he can screw it up.

Just another pitiful chapter in Bowden's legacy......

Sean, I like Bobby Bowden as well but I don't think that anyone in Alabama would be willing to trade Nick Saban for him at this point. Bobby was one of the best in his day but Saban is going to be one of the best for a long time to come.

Paul Hammond, I don't understand why people like you are calling for Bowden to be fired and calling him incompetent. I understand the the program isn't where Florida State fans are used to it being but the only reason that you all are so used to success is Bobby Bowden. The man is a coaching legend and from everything that I have heard about him a class act as well. He has certainly earned the right to coach at Florida State as long as he wants and is physically able, which given his age probably won't be much longer anyway. And the church and state comment is just plain ignorant, I am not aware of a football team anywhere in America that doesn't have a group prayer before the game, it's a tradition and should be left alone.

All you maroons that think jimbo should get the choice of who the new def coordinator is are idiots, it should be bowden, although jimbo should have some input. Bowden knows to many people to not get the pick. Jimbo has proved nothing at all and should not have the choice.

Supposedly, the new DC has already been picked , but they're not saying until the season is done. This is the rumor going around Tally. It is also rumored this person has already bought a house in Tally. And if the rumor of who it is is correct, then this defense will show remarkable improvement next season. Then again, it is just a rumor....
