FSU’s Andrews to leave coaching at season’s end

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP)—Veteran Florida State defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews is hanging up his whistle after 47 years coaching, including 26 years with the Seminoles.

The architect of some of the nation’s best defenses that helped Florida State win a pair of national titles in the 1990s, Andrews announced his decision Tuesday in a handwritten statement.

“Because of a lot of speculation and questioning from friends, family and media, we decided to go ahead and do it now,” Andrews said. “It’s time to be about us my family.”

A football star at Alabama under the coach Paul “Bear” Bryant, Andrews developed 18 first round NFL draft picks during 26 seasons at Florida State beginning with cornerback Deion Sanders in 1989.

“Not a single day goes by when I am coaching, mentoring or teaching somebody that I don’t use things coach Andrews taught me,” Sanders said Tuesday.

Since 1985, NFL teams have picked 73 defensive players developed by Andrews at Florida State. That list includes Peter Boulware, Derrick Brooks, Terrell Buckley, LeRoy Butler, Sam Cowart and Marvin Jones, who like Sanders all went on to star in the NFL.

But this year there were no players of the caliber Andrews had coached for so many years and a young Seminole defense has struggled all season.

Andrews will direct the defense through the remainder of this season and remain on the payroll until Feb. 10, 2010, the anniversary date of his hiring by coach Bobby Bowden, who like Andrews is an Alabama native.

“He’s a guy that has never slowed down,” said Bowden, who had hoped he could persaude Andrews to stay for one more season. “He’s just as enthusiastic now as he was when he came here.”

Andrews, 68, and his wife Diane will remain in Tallahassee where they are helping raise three grandchildren after the sudden, unexpected death of their son Ronnie two years ago.

Coach Andrews has always been as tough as nails on his players, hammering us when we needed hammering, sharpening our skills to win the big games, and showing love and compassion when we needed it. I had the honor of playing for Coach Andrews when he was Head Coach at Livingston University and we won the NAIA National Championship in 1971. He is one of the best coaches around and a great friend to all of his players, past and present.

See Ya Mickey! You've been one hell of a Def-Coordinator in your time! As a Gator fan, you've been a worthy adversary and will be remembered as a great Coach for your team! Would have to say that the "Choke at Doak" was probably your greatest game adjustment against the Gators that resulted in a game that all Gators would love to forget! Enjoy your retirement Mickey - you've earned it!

Simply, The Best! Thank you Coach Andrews for all you have done for Florida State and the Seminole Nation. You will be missed, but never forgotten by the real fans who remember FSU before you and Bobby came on the scene. It's been one helluva ride to watch you outcoach so many over the years and I for one have noticed the amazing adjustments you have made at the half to completely control the second half many games. We can all see something is missing this year, but those of us who know better, don't blame you! Finally, there are many of us who believe you should have been "the coach in waiting", but it's even more testament to you that you handled that with such dignity. Best of luck, Sir!

When the old mans motivation is to hold the record for no. of wins, it tells you how his twisted egotistical self serving mind works. chicken lips and bobby are two peas in a pod. I can just imagine how many times a day they sit back and admire themselves.

    Coach Andrews,

I don't want to see you leave nor do I want Bobbby Bowden to leave. I understand your reason to step down but leave with Bobby not without him. You both have earned the right to coach until you feel ready to leave. I am a true noles fan and not some spoiled by wins fan. I do my seminole chop win or lose, the rest of you all jump from team to team. Go Noles!!!

Good riddance ...... he makes brandon spikes look like a baby. His practice of teaching the kids to tackle thru to the end of the whistle had been a very dangerous practice and who knows how many kids have gotten hurt needlessly. I'm all for hitting someone as hard as you can but when they are out of bounds out of play, play over, cheap shot ......totally against that. Disgusting approach to football.

give this man his due respect as a builder of young men. you young punks think great football is watching cincinatti and rutgers play with 20,000 fans watching. you have to be older and wiser to remember the power house days of college football including florida state.

Alex your an ungrateful prick. How soon you forget all the great years that these men have given FSU. If it wasn't for mickey and bobby you would be nothing. These two men built this program, before them you were nothing. Sure both of them are past their prime, and yes it's time for both of them to retire, but if you think this is going to fix your problems your mistaken. Everyone know that Jimbo has been running the progran for years, so i don't see how your blaming Bobby for all FSU's problems. You can use him as a scape goat all you want to, FSU's problems are just starting. ROLL TIDE!!
