At Pizza Bowl, Thomas 1st woman to officiate bowl

  • Print

DETROIT (AP)—Sarah Thomas made history at the Pizza Bowl on Saturday, becoming the first woman to officiate a bowl game when she worked the matchup between Ohio and Marshall.

Thomas is one of five women officiating in major college football, but Pizza Bowl spokesman Tim Moore said she was the first to draw an assignment for a Bowl Subdivision postseason game.

“It was an honor,” Thomas said while running off the field with her colleagues after Marshall’s 21-17 victory at Ford Field.

Thomas’ position as line judge meant that she spent most of the game in front of the Thundering Herd’s bench, but the Marshall players didn’t pay much attention.

“I noticed her before the game, but that was it,” said Marshall running back Martin Ward, the game’s MVP. “Once the game started, she was just doing the job that the line judge does in every game we play. It didn’t matter that she was a woman at all.”

Thomas became the first woman to be an official for a major college football game in 2007 and is on the NFL’s list of officiating prospects. The married mother of two young sons is from Brandon, Miss., and is a pharmaceutical representative.

“She did a good job,” Marshall coach Rick Minter said. “I didn’t know she was the first woman to work a bowl game, so what an honor to say I was on the same sideline as she was. And, it’s kind of neat that Pam Ward was doing this game on TV for ESPN.”

Terri Valenti is believed to be the first woman to officiate a professional game. She was the head linesman earlier this year in a United Football League game.

Never mind the women refs. We've had the first one so we likely will have more of them. Since someone reads these comments, I would like to remind the TV networks that I get so tired of trying to find out the score in other games that I am not watching, so I try to catch the score at the bottom of the TV screen. Usually they will report a game and then the meaningless "stats" appear at the bottom of the screen after that game and the meaningless stats go on and on. One stat after another. Then they go on commerical break and we never get the score we are waiting for cause they have taken up all of the air time with meaningless stats. It seems that to get the score I have to go to the computer and get it there. So giving the score of the games is useless unless you give the scores and forget about the meaningless stats that no one cares about.

    1) It's a gimmik. The college world is home base for liberals who eat this stuff up. Within 5 years we'll have the first all female officiating crew or some other stupid "first".

    2) I would be shocked if she didn't recieve some preferential treatment to get the job.

    3) I don't really care as long as she does a decent job. Of course it shouldn't be news worthy either.

    4) It's the reporters that need to go. Pretty much every male reporter got their job because they were a coach or player who has a full inside knowedgle of the game. With the exception of the chick (don't remember her name) who does a lot of the Big 10 games and sounds more like a man than most manly men, they all got their jobs because of how they look, not what they know (they may or may not know the game, but that isn't why they got the job).

    5) What is with the chick who sounds more like a guy than any guy I've ever met? I'll be watching the game not even realizing its a chick and all of the sudden they flash to the announcers and I get freaked out. Just make it stop!

    #85 Plutaris:
You write "I'm all for equal opportunity and all that other stuff", but complain when ONE woman is included in ONE bowl game officiating crew, while the other 230 OR MORE bowl game officials this year are men. You complain about men's sports being cut in order to make room for an EQUAL amount of women's sports. Men's sports programs wouldn't be cut if there were enough funds to cover adding more women's sports. Name one women-only sport that costs even 20% of the budget for a football team.
When things are adjusted in an effort to make things a little closer to EQUAL, you call it "reverse discrimination" or a devious left-wing plot.
Let's not forget that the purpose of college athletics is participation and physical activity in a college setting, not what kind of revenue or publicity it generates. The teams are a subsection of the college, not the other way around. TV deals and merchandising have distorted that, but it's still the truth.
And by the way, I believe Pam Ward IS one of the best college football broadcasters...and I've been a football fan since the late '60s...

I noticed her officiating the game before they even mentioned it on air. She did a good job at her position, as did the rest of the crew. I think that it is kind of cool. Better if she got there by working hard the same way that most who move up the ranks do. I am a high school official of 30 + years & have seen women move up the ladder far too quickly do solely to the fact that they are women. Much faster if she is a minority. That being said, I think that it is good to see them break in when they are good enough to be there. I wonder if she got the same pay as the rest of the crew did?

this is to 90. Posted by Fred I think that it is good that a woman can ref. What is the difference then men coaching in womens sports? Why a female coach hold the records for most wins in NCAA basketball over both. Now I don't think women should play in the same sports as men cause we all know men are more physical then women but why would it hurt to let them Ref or coach?

Where are the hermaphrodite referees? Where is the justice? What happens when a ref needs to deliver a baby during a game? Or their cell phone goes off because their kitty cat is sick and needs a ride home from Sunday School? What about the Lombardi Power Sweep/Miscarriage? The NFL needs a firm policy promoting robot and animal refs. Also.

Women should not be a back judge ref in the NFL...........she would be FLATTENED by Ray Lewis.

Ray Lewis would hit her so hard - even her momma would feel it.

They will outlaw women refs the moment one gets mowed down and dies.

    Football is for men only........

Ladies please - these men that still live in the middle ages are correct - we need to stop buying tickets and going to football games - watching football games - buying team gear - and most importantly raising our sons to play football since we are personna-non-gratta with football in any way shape or form. What we need to do instead is kick men completely out of women's sports and only got to women's sports events. Take the time and money spent to make women's teams and sports profitable - while the men's sports lose about 50% of their revenue. After all if we aren't welcome then our money isn't any good either is it? So please I emplore you let's show them how little influence we really have!!!!!

There's a good video on her on YouTube. She'll probably go to the NFL around the same time Brian Kelly does, after he wins 4 championships at Notre Dame. Actually she'll get there sooner. Now I'm waiting for a female head coach. Hmm. Maybe Notre Dame . . .

Big deal. Our society cannot be more perfect. The Airline Pilots Association had the the "First All Black Female Crew" 3 months ago... but I would prefer them to be all left handed, Asian and gay...How much more divisive can we be?

How about Native Americans? They should get a break; absolutely... Does the Black Coaches Assn worry about them?

And hey, Lisa Navarrette of N.C Laraza: an "undocumented" status means one is here ILLEGALLY!!

Wake up America and quit buying this devisive crap!! America is the most inclusive country in the world. We are a MELTING POT, Right?????

To all you wimps out there who support a woman refeering college football games, you have your brains up your rear, this is being done by a bunch of ncaa officials who are really women masquaading as men. this is nothing but political correctness crap. i for one will not watch a game being officiated by some woman who never played the game. when i hear that woman doing broadcasting of the college game, i turn it off. and i hope everyone does since she doesn't have the voice for a football game, she sounds horrible and it really shows that she doesn't really know the game. there are a lot of men out there who can do a much better job than any woman. let's stop this political correctness now by letting the powers to that we are tired of there crap pc.

#85 your argument for the flip side of this coin is not valid either citing women putting men out of jobs. While statistics show a gain (if that's what you want to call it) for women, in a the broader picture it's still a loss. Women currently and historically have been and are still being paid less than men in all professions.

From a business perspective, doesn't it make more sense to hire the person with the same capabilities at a lesser rate of pay if you're able to? That's why women are making those so called "gains". Also is it really a "gain" if at the end of the day you're paid less than someone of the opposite sex doing the same job?

That being said, congrats Sarah on going a step higher in your chosen profession.

However, EVERYBODY needs something to be held "sacred." Better yet how about we stop making a big deal about the first this and that and just say good job on doing your job.

I am sure she had to work her way to get there and I am sure there is going to be other women now starting to come into the game.In time I can see trouble in the long run here with sexual harrasment.I am not saying a woman cant do a good job being a ref.It is just the way it goes in such things.Men playing football watch what you say and what you do.It could ruin your career.

#81 Ryan, your argument loses all creditability when you can't even spell correctly.
It's ridiculous, not whatever you put. And I'll tell you why it's wrong having women infringe upon another man thing. Women have been putting far too many men out of jobs. Do you realize that during this deep recession, that of all the people losing their jobs, over 66% are men. Gains for one group(in this case women) means someone from another group (in this case men) loses. I'm all for equal opportunity and all that other stuff, however it should not be at the expense of someone else or some other group. I'm tired of these liberal groups and feminists using sports as a way to achieve so-called 'equality'. When colleges jettison male sports like lacrosse and wrestling, that they've had for decades, because they have to have an equal number of women's sports that is just plain wrong. And it's actually reverse discrimination against men to achieve an agenda. Aren't this country's family structures(or lack thereof) and morality(or lack thereof) screwed up enough already with all this role reversal nonsense. Enough is Enough !

Women should officiate sports that have been invented for women.

Why is it that women rarely invent their own sports for themselves ?
