Moore, Kaepernick fluster foes in different ways

  • Print

BOISE, Idaho (AP)—Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore flusters foes with his sniper-like arm, his knack for finding the open guy anywhere on the field and just plain outwitting defensive coordinators.

His Nevada counterpart gives defenses fits in different ways.

Colin Kaepernick is elusive, fast enough to beat linebackers around the edge and unafraid to use his legs to flee a collapsing pocket.

But Moore and Kaepernick also share some common ground.

They are the best quarterbacks in the Western Athletic Conference. Kaepernick was voted the WAC’s top offensive player last year, while Moore was named the league’s top freshman, and both will be vying for MVP honors at the end of this season.

They are also big reasons why the No. 6 Broncos and streaking Wolfpack (8-3, 7-0 WAC) will play for the conference title Friday night at Bronco Stadium.

“They’re so very different, but so very good,” said Bronco cornerback Kyle Wilson, who lines up against Moore every day in practice and faced Kaepernick each of the last two seasons. “I’m not sure who I’d rather play against. Pick your poison.”

Either way, both are lethal.

Moore has propelled the 11-0 Broncos to a second straight undefeated season thanks to his ability to carve up defensive secondaries. He is the nation’s most accurate passer (168.8), has 33 touchdowns and just three picks, his last coming three games and more than 70 throws ago. He orchestrates a Bronco offense that averages a national best 44 points per game and rolls up an average of 456 yards.

He also wins—a lot. Since taking over the Bronco offense at the start of last year, the lefty has compiled a 23-0 regular season record. His only loss was a 17-16 nailbiter against TCU in last year’s Poinsettia Bowl.

“Moore has tremendous, tremendous pocket presence,” said Nevada coach Chris Ault, who has presided over some of the best passing attacks in WAC history. “And he has excellent skill players at the receiver spots.”

But where Moore excels at throwing darts through holes in the defense, Kaepernick prefers to run through them.

Five times this season Kaepernick has rushed for more than 100 yards. He is one of three Wolfpack players to rush for more than 1,000 yards this season and his 2,738 career rushing yards place him 15th all time among NCAA quarterbacks.

He also knows how to frustrate the Broncos.

In fact, Kaepernick had his coming out party in Boise two years ago when the Broncos edged the Wolfpack in four overtimes 69-67, the most points scored in a game since record keeping began in 1937. As a redshirt freshman making his first start, Kaepernick was a one-man Bronco buster, throwing three TDs, running for two more and accounting for 420 total yards in the thriller.

The 6-foot, six-inch junior has been hard to stop ever since. Along with running backs Vai Taua and Luke Lippincott, Kaepernick leads the nation’s best rushing attack, a unit that has trampled opponents for an average of 455 yards on the ground during the Wolfpack’s eight-game winning streak.

Boise State’s stingy defense will be focused on stopping the run. But coach Chris Petersen says it’d be foolish to ignore Kaepernick’s ability to pass and make plays while scrambling.

“I think he’s just taken a step every year. And they’ve honed him in to exactly how they want to use him and play to his strengths,” Petersen said. “He can hurt you throwing it, there is no question about it. But even if you’ve got guys in position, he is fast, fast, fast.”

For Moore, there is a mutual respect, if not a little envy. While Moore can be effective dashing from the pocket, he’s not feared for his running ability and often takes a ribbing from teammates for his less than fleet feet.

“It’ll be fun,” Moore joked of the pre-game hype surrounding the high-profile quarterbacks. “Certainly I’m in no way similar to him. He’s going to run around and make some plays. It’ll be fun watching him. He’s one of those dual threat type of guys. It’ll be cool.”

ok, it has all been explained before, but here goes...first of all it's NOT the players, its the coaches AND the players. IF Boise St. were in the Pac-10 or SEC, they would be playing with the same talent as they would be recruiting and signing from the same pool, with that said, they are getting lesser talented players, (so you say) and just getting more out of them. Winning MORE games than ANY other team in ALL of football is not a fluke, they still play with the same players that other schools had a chance at or simply refused. Like it or not, you HAVE to play teams in your conference, and they are almost unbeatable in theirs. Remember, most schools play 12 or 13 games each year, so you can't really say which of the other 95 schools would beat them on the field, if that were the case we should just have a preseason ranking, let #'s 1 and 2 play for the National Championship, and let 3-10 play eachother in the remaining BCS games and then let all of the (other) bowls pick who they want. Everybody would be well rested and then you can say, well (this team) beat (that team). You see, there is never going to be a way to make everybody happy. There is (almost) always gonna be a cinderella team, and a team that gets ''left out''. The fairest way would for every conference plays a championship game, and they all play in BCS Bowls. Final standings are picked after ''these'' games, with the winners of those games 1-5. No conference gets left out, and maybe, just maybe, we might again see a NC from a small school. I live in Boise, but root for underdogs countrywide

I heard that! It would be great if the Mountain West would shuffle some teams out and bring the best area teams in. I was always under the impression that Boise was unwanted because of the small stadium, but last week I watched TCU, the most important opponent Wyoming will ever have, and there were maybe 500 people in the stands.
I for one could handle watching the Broncos lose a game once in a while under the circumstances that it would create for them. I wonder if Utah remembers the thrashing the Broncos put on them in their own yard in 2006. Was it 35-3?

Boise State needs to apply to play in the Mountain West Conference until that happens they will never get the respect they think they deserve,Play better competition like BYU,Utah ,TCU and also bring Nevada,Fresno State and maybe Hawaii with you from the weak azz WAC.that would make the MWC to be taken seriously by the BCS

Isn't that the same thing they said just before Boise State beat Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl?

I agree 100% that college needs a playoff system, but those of you who believe Boise should be in the National title game, need to change the channel to ESPN2 and watch the Nevada/Boise game. Could you honestly see Boise playing a Florida, Alabama, or Texas team. The only chance they would have winning is the coin toss....Go Nevada!!!!!! Texas 125 Boise 10 (The 10 comes when Colt McCoy and the first string are in the locker room celebrating...

Darwin, I think it is more or less the economy, people are broke and out of work. So they figure they will just watch it on the tube. It is better on T.V. as far I am concerned.

KTVB in Boise just reported on 6:30 pm News 7 that the game with Nevada for the WAC Championshipis not SOLD OUT. This makes the 4th game on the Blue that HAS NOT SOLD OUT this year. The # 6 BSU can't SELL OUT a 30,000 stadium for the WAC CHAMPIONSHIP. WOW!!!
That must by why BSU had to hire a PR Firm because even the fans are tired of there BS.
That won't look good to the BCS when they find out that BSU fans are not supporting them.
Other top ranked teams will fill a 60,000 to 80,000 and even 100,000 seat stadiums. That and BSU's record of 1-4 in Bowl games since 2004 and there #97 SOS the poorest in the top 25.
All these things raise the QUESTION does the BCS want them???? NO

Boise State will get SMASHED by a real team in a bowl game, just like Georgia did to the amazing Hawaii and Colt Brennan. That is exactly who they remind me of. I like em but just don't think they can match up with the big boys. Imagine what Florida would do to the Boise defense, he could probably run 5 td's in on his own and as a sucky passer, he could pass for 300 plus yards! Cheers all, love to hear your comments. BYW, anyone thing tonights game is going over or under 70, I am betting on it????

Munster is the rational commenter about lowly teams like Boise State. He should patrol these sections daily to rebuke simpletons like Imposter H who claimed "Boise has little control over its SOS".

Every team in Boise State's conference scheduled at least one difficult team. Many of them played ranked teams. Boise State's being the only one who can not schedule strong opponents indicates that its athletic director is cowardly. UCLA has an open date next season. That would be a start, even though UCLA has a losing record.

Imposter H..your view is a tad simplistic...you make it sound like programs are afraid of boise..and now the rest of the story...boise's AD first tries to schedule a "home and home"...when there is no takers..he trys a "one and done"..BUT with a almost unrealistic payday for boise...he wants $900k to a cool $1 mil...why would a big program pay that kind of money when a 1AA or lesser FBS team will take far less?...sorry but with the flawed BCS..SOS DOES matter...when boise has the LOWEST SOS of all of the top 25..it speaks loudly.....sorry

I don't think that strenght of schedule should be a factor. Does the NCAA make any attempt to make sure strong programs schedule up and coming programs? No. Florida could have scheduled Boise St...who did they schedule? Florida International... Boise State makes every effort to schedule a tough non-conferene schedule...it's hardly their fault if there are few takers. Does the NCAA for conferences to realign to make sure the most competitive programs are in biggest conferences? No. Is there a playoff to allow them to sort it out on the field? No.

My point is...it's BS to use something against a program that they do not control. It doesn't work that way in NCAA basketball. Gonzaga is a major program in a minor conference (WCC). Does anyone argue that Gonzaga couldn't beat any team in the nation on any given day? No. Boise has little control over its SOS...since the NCAA refuses to correct this obvious problem with the system, it should be ignored.

    A couple of other things...

If there are 10 slots for BCS games, they should go to the top 10 ranked teams period.

Dawgmeat should know that what happened in the past doesn't always have a lot to do with what happens in the future. Huskies go from Nat'l Champ to 0-12 and is now on the upswing again....

Finally...I hope that all my above points are irrelevant after tonight. Go Pack!!! Bring that WAC Championship to Reno! :)

    Dawgmeat....

Yeah...the Huskies would have a chance against Boise State. It would probably be a close hard faught game but I still think Boise would win by at least 10. When teams don't play against each other the only way to "predict" what the outcome would be is to compare how they did against the same opponent. Boise State beat Oregon by 11 and Oregon beat Wasington by 24. We will never know since they don't play each other.

Do I think BSU would be undefeated in the Pac 10 or SEC? No I do not! Right now, they would not have the depth to win every week in a stronger conference. With that being said, why should they be penalized and bad mouthed just because they go undefeated in a weaker conference? Boise has tried to move to a better conference but no one will take them...hmm...I wonder why? They have also issued an invitation for any team to play them without having to come back to Boise. Still no takers.

So I do not understand why people bash Boise for playing a weak schedule when they have tried everything they can to play up. Maybe it is because they like to have "excuses" when the Boise's, Utah's, TCU's, etc. go undefeated.

Any way, this will be a mute point if they lose to Nevada tonight. Boise better come ready for a dogfight!

norm ...... speaking of facts .... Oregon is the ONLY team Boise State had to beat this season to be undefeated. if Boise State played an SEC or Pac 10 conference schedule this season ..... they would have AT LEAST 3 losses, probably more. seriously dude .... they struggled against a BAD 1AA school. thats pathetic.
    -----------------------------
If they played in the SEC they would be some tired fools on the road with the distances - and the travel costs wouldn't make the BSU president very happy.
