Hawkins gets another year despite 4 losing seasons

BOULDER, Colo. (AP)—What does University of Colorado athletic director Mike Bohn have to say to doubters and detractors who contend he’s sticking with football coach Dan Hawkins only because he couldn’t come up with the $3.1 million buyout and the millions more it would take to replace him?

Twelve seconds of silence.

“Yeah,” Bohn responds when asked if he’s still there. “I’m thinking about what I want to say.”

Another 18 seconds of silence.

“Our financial, uh … Can you ask me the question again so I can get a little excited? I slept in my clothes last night. I’m a little slow,” asks Bohn, who flew back into Denver early Thursday after accompanying the men’s basketball team to the Maui Invitational in Hawaii.

So, what does he have to say to those critics who will insist that money and not merit guided his decision to keep a coach who is 16-32 with a 2-20 road record and a 10-21 mark in the Big 12?

“Well, money is always a consideration in big-time college football,” Bohn said. “It wasn’t THE determining factor. The bottom line was Dan Hawkins is the right coach for CU at this time.”

Hawkins has cleaned up a program tarnished by scandal under Gary Barnett, but he’s been unable to find success on the field and has endured four straight losing seasons, which usually lead to moving trucks, not reiterations of support.

The Buffaloes (3-8, 2-5) wrap up their season Friday against Big 12 North champion Nebraska (8-3, 5-2) at Folsom Field in a game that many thought would be Hawkins’ farewell.

Chancellor Philip DiStefano and Bohn informed the team after its walkthrough on Thanksgiving Day of their coach’s status to quell doubts about his future.

“It was really important for me to look these kids in the eye and Dan in the eye rather than being out in Maui” and doing it by phone, Bohn said.

DiStefano said he supports Bohn’s decision to honor Hawkins’ contract, which runs through 2012.

“Dan represents the university’s values on and off the field, and his team has been competitive this year,” DiStefano said. “He has done all that we have asked him to do, and although we all desire more victories, we also recognize starting over with a new coach right now takes us away from, not closer to, our goals for CU football.”

Of the Buffs’ eight losses this season, three have been by a touchdown or less and two others, at West Virginia and Texas, were competitive before fourth-quarter flameouts.

Hawkins signed a five-year contract in 2006 after leaving Boise State, where he was 53-11, and was given an extension 13 months ago before injuries unraveled the Buffs, who finished 5-7 last year.

Hawkins declared “10 wins, no excuses” as his mantra for this season, but the Buffs quickly rendered that goal laughable, leading to widespread dissatisfaction with Hawkins, who became increasingly defensive.

Bohn asked that Buffs supporters now rally around the program and its players, if not Hawkins.

“The program is bigger than any one individual and the institution is bigger than any member of the leadership team or anybody associated with this outstanding university,” Bohn said. “And I recognize that there’s a schism among the fan base. We’re going to work hard to close that.”

Bohn said he expects some backlash.

“I’m certainly aware that people on both sides of this issue are passionate,” he said. “And that’s why I believe one of my biggest challenges will be trying to collectively put that passion together because when we are unified, Folsom Field and our football program can compete with anybody in the nation.”

Hawkins will almost certainly have to have a winning season next year to keep his boss’s trust and his job.

“Clearly, I believe the longer a coach or anyone is associated with a program that the scoreboard ultimately becomes an important barometer,” Bohn said.

Hawkins had more votes of confidence than wins this season, but as the losses piled up, more and more calls came for his ouster, and the din heightened when blue chipper Darrell Scott bolted the Buffs at midseason.

Hawkins acknowledged this week that he regretted recruiting his son, Cody, to Boulder to be his quarterback because his kid unfairly became a lightning rod for critics before his benching at midseason.

Some students took to wearing powder blue to games this season instead of gold and black to protest the program’s slide into mediocrity. It was the color the team wore from 1981-84 when they went 10-34 overall during one of the worst stretches in school history.

That stretch is now rivaled by Hawkins era, and the question now is about the color green: Will alumni and boosters open up their wallets with Hawkins given a fifth season instead of a pink slip?

Fire Bohn...and fire Hawkins! Why would any AD give a college coach that kind of contract?! There is a lot of sadness coming to CU fans, since Bohn handed him millions of dollars to suck until 2012! I don't know why anyone would root for CU. They have sucked for a long time, and the president and AD made a statement by keeping Hawkins...football just isn't important in Boulder. GO BIG RED!

Mike Bohn came back from Hawaii preaching the importance of relationships. Kum-flippin-bay-ah. If I want relationship advice I will go to a counselor, a preacher, or a mentor.

Can we have an athletic department who watches Rocky instead of Its a Wonderful Life? Those bells you heard should have been tolling for Hawkins job, not for Bohn earning his guardian angel wings.

CU needs Bobby Knight, oh, forgot, he's a BB coach. CU needs something besides what that it has, like a coach. Playing his kid killed the moral of the team.

So, looking forward, we can expect D-Hawk to land a top recruiting class and field a competitive team for next season... But wait a second, how exactly is that going to happen...

Hope, next year he would not do same mistakes allowing his son to start. Tyler Hansen looks promising. If Tyler Hansen mature enough fast during off season, next season looks not that bad. (just hoping)

here lies the problem, besides the 2 biggest ones in Bohn and Hawkins. The players being recruited into the program may be good kids and good students but cant play D-1 football. The school has cut out bringing in great players who are so-so students, they wont take a chance on them anymore for fear someone might get in trouble...If this is the direction the program is going we might as well join the IVY LEAGUE. All the good prospects are going elsewhere because they cant get in....

This is terrible news for Buffs nation. Its not necessarily Dan Hawkins' moral values or abilities to "clean up" the program which is the problem... rather, its the assistant coaches he brought with him from Boise St that are COMPLETELY incompetent of coaching their players. The talent is there but the coaching is not. Without proper assistant coaches at Special Teams, ESPECIALLY, its obvious that CU cannot win in the Big 12. Just look at the Texas game... CU would have won if their special teams could keep it together and there weren't 20 penalties called on the team. This is a result of POOR COACHING and Dan needs to learn that loyalties don't mean JACK when those loyal to you are incapable of producing results. CLEAN HOUSE DAN!!!!!!

Colorado obviously made the same mistake Nebraska did a couple years ago with semi-mediocre Bill Callahan, and the only reason Hawk is coming back is due to $$$. Why do Universities sign coaches to lengthy guaranteed extensions particularly when their body of work up to that point had been so-so. Example Bill Callahan, goes 5-6, 8-4, 9-5 (Big XII North Title) wins first game of 2007 then gets a FIVE year extension and a raise!? Sure looked like he was on the right path but why all the guaranteed money? Of course the 2007 Huskers fell apart and BC and his mediocre 27-22 record were frog marched out of town. Of course he got a lot of $$$ to take that walk and soon wound up back in the NFL. (To that guy that stated NFL coaches made good College Coaches, for the most part that is BS). Hawkins got a 3-year extension under similar circumstances last year. It's one thing to give extensions but all the guaranteed money is flat out irresponsible. Any of you guys have a job where if they fire you for doing a poor job you'll get a couple years salary? No provision to cease payoff if you find another job? It's just dumb and playing loose with the University and Booster's money. Look no further than Fats Weis who I hope goes out a loser tomorrow, 10 year deal on the heels of a close LOSS to USC??? What a joke. Anyway, I thought the Hawkins hire was a good one back in 2006, but I don't think he's panned out. 16-32 is flat out bad. Hopefully be 16-33 after today and realistically what is the expectation for next season with a lot of the same guys? Good Luck to Colorado, I'd rather see them be a solid team rather than a North Division Cellar dweller. Go BIg Red!

Look at Boise State now. Always at the top since Hawkins left. Best thing that ever happened to Boise State, thanks CU. Neuheisel has ruined every program he has ever been at. Has he learned his lesson? Lets see if UCLA will be on probation soon

Colorado won the Big 12 Championship two years after Neuheisel left. His tenure didn't hurt Colorado one bit. And when he was the HC at Colorado, they had some pretty darn good teams. Likewise at Washington - particularly 2000, when they should have played Oklahoma for the national championship (they gave it to Florida State. The Seminoles lost a game to Miami who also had one loss. Miami's one loss that season was to Neuheisel's Huskies). Now the Huskies have indeed been bad since Neuheisel left.

Colorado has been surprisingly competitive at the end of the season with several close games. After early season blowouts perhaps the AD and president are hoping that Hawkins finally has things moving is direction. If they don't win 6-7 games and go to a bowl then he definitely needs to go. Here's hoping they have a good season next year.

Sounds like Colorado needs a new AD first and then a new coach. What's he going to do next season with a bunch of young two and three star recruits that can't play college football? Another losing season. I wish they could build their team up to compete with Nebraska. I would hate to see Colorado Get as bad as OU was during the John Blake era. It kinda looks like OU may have hired John Blake back because they look like hammered crap!!! This is one of the worse OU teams that I can remember. Stoops needs to wake up and fire some coaches and get back to winning.

Johnny don't keep us hanging! What are the 10 programs that turn a profit? This is BS.. Provide the information that you have. College football not only supports most all of the other sport program's financing, but it also turns a profit for the school... You have to include doners too so don't get dumb. Give us your facts.

Dan Hawkins is not a bad guy, just a bad football coach. But Mike Bohn is an idiot and Phil DiStefano is a conniving little rat. They're the ones that need to go.
