Swarbrick: Clausen “victim of a sucker punch”

  • Print

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP)—Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen was sporting a black eye behind the tinted visor he wore to practice Tuesday.

According to a university official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the matter, Clausen was punched outside a South Bend bar early Sunday morning.

Athletic director Jack Swarbrick said Clausen was the “victim of a sucker punch.” He made the comments during a taping of his radio show for WLS Radio 890 in Chicago, which normally airs on Saturday.

“He was not engaged in a fight. He didn’t throw any punches. He didn’t directly engage the individual,” Swarbrick said. “He just got coldcocked by somebody, and we’re very disturbed by that.”

A message seeking comment was left Tuesday evening for Swarbrick on his cell phone.

Clausen was at C.J.’s Pub about 2 a.m. with his family and girlfriend after Notre Dame’s double overtime loss to Connecticut, according to the official.

The group decided to leave after words were exchanged with others at the bar, the official said. As they were leaving, Clausen’s girlfriend realized she left her purse behind. Clausen went back to retrieve the purse and someone followed him outside and punched him, the official said. Clausen did not fight back and left, the official said.

South Bend Police Capt. Phil Trent says police were called to the scene after receiving a report of a fight. He says police arrived within minutes and everyone was gone.

Coach Charlie Weis declined to talk about the dustup at his news conference Tuesday other than to say Clausen would practice would this week and start Saturday against Stanford (7-4). Clausen was not available to comment to the media on Tuesday and his usual Wednesday news conference along with other Notre Dame captains was canceled.

Weis called off all interviews for players and assistant coaches this week.

A message seeking comment was left on the cell phone of Clausen’s father, Jim Sr., by The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Weis poked fun at Clausen during practice on Tuesday, saying his new nickname was “Darth Vader.”

Weis announced in August that he would allow Notre Dame players to wear visors for the first time. He said at the time that they could only wear clear visors because he didn’t think dark visors would look right at Notre Dame because he didn’t want players to have “Darth Vader visors.”

“I thought were way too Hollywood for Notre Dame,” he said.

Hey OHdad (post #181): If I recall correctly from Psych 101 or 121 (i.e. college freshmen course), those with an IQ under 50 can't even feed themselves. Not that I'm defending TJ. I think it'd be tough to read more than fifty consecutive keystrokes around here that were typed by someone with an IQ under 80.

In a similar vein, how can someone be intelligent enough to lead a Division 1 team (with a winning record, no less), yet be dumb enough to let someone push his girlfriend and blacken his eye... and then wants that to be the end of the story? I.E. doesn't want to press charges, etc.

Now ask the same question, while inserting--where appropriate--the words "sober" or "without pot in his pocket."

I know that seems like I'm insisting Clausen is guilty before he's tried, which is an awful thing to do, but......

I think if this story has legs, he's gonna have to say something. If it were a restaurant that didn't serve alcohol, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be hanging around, still asking questions.

Funny how Clausen receives a black eye from a sucker punch and the media/fans can't stop talking about it.

In contrast, an Ohio State starting linebacker was sucker punched by a Florida Gator fan shortly before the start of fall training camp and spent several days in the IC unit and it barely was a blip on the radar.

    Wow, talk about selective reporting.

The real story is that twinkle toes Jimmy was in a fight and obviously didn't close that one out successfully either. Because Clausen would need to be suspended for violating team rules Weis and the AD, knowing the program couldn't absorb anymore negative publicity or pressure, and that without Clausen in the lineup a rout was certain! So, they put the marketing team into full force and put the "coldcock" spin on full press.

You have to ask yourself, why were no charges filed? Why is no investigation being conducted by the South Bend PD, the campus police or the athletic department. South Bend is a town of about 100,000 people. You mean to tell me that some guy at a local tavern/restaurant at 2 am isn't known by the owner, wait staff, etc.? It is obvious that this is a cover up to keep Clausen in the line up and to leave intact what little positive image ND football has left!

Clausen should be suspended for violating team rules. Now what does this tell you about the honor of this program, the AD and Chancellor. Desperate times under the Golden Dome!

What a bunch of crap! What's he doing there at a bar/resturant at 2:00 am anyway? He put himself in that position to begin with and then you want us to believe he was randomly sucker punched for absolutley no reason at all huh? yeah right.

Something tells me he had it coming, not saying it was right, just had it coming.

TJ, nice of you to show your IQ, somewhere around 30? (bet I am within 10 points). Nothing you said makes any sense, nor has any base on reality. You are a fool.
On Clausen, if the story is true he did the right thing by walking away, something a right wing moron like TJ would never do.

Why is Clauson wearing a shield in that picture? Is he trying to hide the tears he still sheds for getting popped? Or is it that he just can't wrap his brain around the fact that someone had the audacity to hit "Jimmy Football".

Nice to see good christian families hanging out at bar/resturants at 2am. He "thought" that was the only safe time to show his face in public....he was wrong. I bet he cried in his momma lap all the way home.

All other considerations aside - I have to wonder how much fight is in a person and team leader who when punched, doesn't automatically punch back as a reflex defensive reaction.

    The "fighting irish"?

    'Nuff said.

I'm always amazed at the stupidity of many of the posters. So since Clausen 1) didnt fight back, 2) didn't press charges, 3) came to practice like normal.....then we "need" to hear the "other side" (the idiot who sucker punched him) and find out what Clausen is "hiding". Spoken like a true liberal idiot who cant think coherently, you must be college age, Obama supporter who in 10 years will be some worthless middle manager crying about why the govt isnt giving you more money. First, explain WHY Clausen HAS to explain anything else or WHY he should press charges? I mean seriously. The United States could (and should) shut down all but one or two law schools for 10 years and we would STILL have a massive glut of unnecessary lawyers. Said idiot (the cowardly puncher) got his punch in...yes he is a stupid ignorant person who should not be allowed to reproduce...nuff said.. And please dont give me the idiotic statement how I'd suddenly LOVE lawyers when I get in trouble. Nope...lawyers are a necessary evil in this day and age when people have stopped being responsible and instead demand others make their lives easier..at their expense. I only wish that I could get a few lawyers with integrity (oxymorons I know--like democratic politicians and President Obama) to sue law schools and incompetent and corrupt judges and lawyers.

Anyone who is stupid enough to punch out defenseless people..well that shows their lack of character and integrity (probably a liberal democrat) , but to get upset over a COLLEGE football team for ANY REASON is the height of stupidity and foolishness. (Which only makes the fool more likely to have voted for Obama--see the earlier lack of integrity). Well I hope the idiot feels better now that he jumped a defenseless guy who only went back to get his girlfriend's purse. I'm sure the idiot is strutting around ...and eventually it will be reported and the fool will spend some time in jail (as he should..just for being born).

Who cares - Clausen, the university and football program have proven they are no longer irrelevant. It has been 15 years people - 15 YEARS since relevancy - The sole reason any of the 3 are getting this much media attention is because the American public can't get enough car wrecks to watch and enjoy. The alumni support the fallacy of righteousness, honor, and the "catholic code", none of which are truly observed.

ND no longer can attract exclusive recruits, there facilities are substandard to many programs, the academics are on level with many, the stadium is quaint, but substandard to many that hold and fill 90,000 each Saturday. And then there's South Bend itself.

Let's take a look at some college campuses and see where an 18 year old kid would rather spend their college career - Gainesville, FL, Austin, TX, Baton Rouge, LA, Tuscaloosa, AL, Oxford, MS, Knoxville, TN, Athens, GA, Chapel Hill, NC....the list goes on and on. Unless you grew up in the rust belt and enjoy cold dreary weather, there are many more college environments that can offer so much more than ND. Perhaps if the university spent more time polishing the dome than their knobs, perhaps the results would improve.

What many fail to acknowledge is that ND's "network" is not nearly as powerful as it was 20 years or so ago. Many of the state universities have far greater economic resources and "nation" networks than does the delusional Domer Homer network.

Here's to a stellar 6-6 season, getting to listen to Homer Holtz spew out the reasons ND failed to deliver on a NC this year, Bryce Hart and the throngs of Domer Homers attack anyone that post anything but unconditional love for ND. You reap what you sew!

    GO CARDINAL!

#168 I could not have said it better. As the world (and people) continue to drift away from what is right, it is going to take strong leaders, not only in politics, but more importantly in the Church, to take a stand and not bend.

#164: Clearly you don't have an understanding of the Catholic faith (ND doesn't follow the faith very well by the way) or faith in general.

If you in sin, you are not supposed to take communion. The church considers life to start at conception. As such, esposing abortion is esposing murder. Sin is not an action it is an intent (ie: if you intend to kill someone and fail, you still committed the sin.). If you aid murder by supporting abortion, you have sinned. You cannot be forgiven for the sin until you confess and commit to try and not sin again. So far as I know the polititian still openly supports abortion, so cannot be forgiven and thus should not take communion.

If the polititian wants to claim to be a Catholic, he is subject to the faith.

What concerns me is that more clergy (catholic and other faiths), don't have the guts to stand up and call out polititians who claim to be religious and then openly propose laws that violate their religion.

Notre Dame.. little gold helmets.. crappy teams .. worse coaches. The over-exposure and artificial build-up they receive in the press each year is equaled only by the Dallas Cowplops. It is always nice to watch as either team falls flat on their face, but this year Notre Dame has truly outdone themselves as they mire in the mud.

Don't let that Rhode Island Catholic Bishop find out who landed the punch on Twinkletoes, he'll issue a dictate denying him communion.

Don't other people find it scarey that a Catholic Bishop would attempt to control how an elected official votes by withholding the officials ability to communicate with his God? I'm amazed there is no national outrage... eucharistic blackmail.
