Tebow, McCoy finalists for top scholar-athlete

  • Print

DALLAS (AP)—Florida quarterback Tim Tebow and Texas quarterback Colt McCoy are among 16 finalists for the Campbell Trophy, given to the nation’s top senior scholar-athlete in college football.

The Campbell Trophy is presented by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. The winner receives $25,000 in scholarship money. All the finalists receive an $18,000 scholarship toward postgraduate studies.

The other finalists announced Thursday were Illinois guard Jon Asamoah; BYU linebacker Matt Bauman; Minnesota receiver Eric Decker; Fresno State safety Moses Harris; Western Michigan quarterback Tim Hiller; Brown defensive tackle Paul Jasinowski; Morningside College receiver Beau Kildow; Northern Iowa linebacker Josh Mahoney; Tusculum tight end Jarrell NeSmith; Baylor linebacker Joe Pawelek; Kansas quarterback Todd Reesing; Hardin-Simmons receiver Zavious Robbins; Augustana College Blaine Westemeyer; and West Virginia linebacker Reed Williams.

The scholar-athlete award was called the Draddy Trophy until earlier this year, when it was renamed after William V. Campbell, the chairman of software company Intuit and a former player and coach at Columbia University.

The Draddy was first handed out in 1990. Last year’s Draddy Trophy winner was California center Alex Mack, and previous winners include Peyton Manning and Chad Pennington.

The Campbell Trophy will be handed out in New York in December at the NFF’s Hall of Fame induction banquet.

rickellis - simple, he went to the TX/OU game where OU dismantled UT 65 -13. He started the game with the horns up, ended with them down. He was quoted when asked why he chose OU and he stated...."I want to win national championship." Ironic huh, too bad he and VY couldn't have been teammates., would've been those two, Jamaal Charles and Selvin Young (potentially the greatest backfield in college football history)

    State 1
We have better players, its not that he is coming to UT, but rather, UT finally took one of theirs the way they (OU) steal our best sometimes i.e. Adrian Peterson, Tommie Harris, and the list goes on.

The William V. Campbell trophy, formerly the Vincent dePaul Draddy Trophy, is a trophy awarded by the National Football Foundation that is given to the American college football player with the best combination of academics, community service, and on-field performance. It is considered by many to be the "Academic Heisman."
The trophy is not just awarded for STATS! I think you are the joke!

iamme23andsumchange.......great post. Tebow, McCoy, Reesing, and Bradford are all great qb's and all are great kids. I know you to be a fair and just fan of the 'horns and college football. These young men have all worked very hard to get to this place in their lives, both as athletes, and representatives of of their universities. Boomer Sooner.

Post 38, the real problem is Florida's ranking as a school. It's not very high, even though it is one of the better ones in the backward, retarded SEC.
