USC, LSU, Miami alive for BCS at-large bids

  • Print

Southern California, LSU and Miami are among eight teams that cannot earn an automatic BCS bid, but are still in contention for an at-large invite to a marquee bowl game.

BCS officials announced Tuesday that a total of 20 teams are still in the running for spots in the national championship game and the Rose, Fiesta, Sugar and Orange bowls.

Ten teams, including No. 1 Florida, No. 2 Alabama and No. 3 Texas, are in position to earn an automatic BCS bid as a conference champion or an at-large pick.

Either Boise State or TCU could earn an automatic bid by winning its non-automatic qualifying conference and finishing in the top 12 on the final BCS standings. Both are eligible for an at-large selection if they don’t get an automatic bid.

Joining USC, LSU and Miami as teams still in the mix solely for BCS at-large bids are Brigham Young, Iowa, Oklahoma State, Penn State and Virginia Tech.

Among the teams playing for automatic bids as conference winners over the next two weeks are Oregon and Oregon State, which will meet Dec. 3 to decide the Pac-10 champion; Georgia Tech and Clemson, which will play in the ACC championship game on Dec. 5; Texas and Nebraska, which will play for the Big 12 title on Dec. 5; and Florida and Alabama, meeting in the SEC title game on Dec. 5.

...Sinner...sinner..do you even think for one minute NCAA would even consider taking action Against U.S.C...to have them forfeit 70 plus games and give up 50 scholarships and to fire their coach...come on now..they can only pick on Bobby Bowden...if you see Pete running back to the NFL then you will know something is coming forward..

Uh, Boise got blown out by Georgia in the 2005 season. They beat Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl after the 2006 season. Not saying your sentiment is inaccurate; rather, your reasoning is. It is worth noting, however, that so-called "BCS busters" have fared very well in their BCS games (only Hawaii has lost).

USC is DONE! And what ever happened to the NCAA's investigation of Reggie Bush, rememnber his parents were living in a big ole house from a section 8 apartment! They are like a bunch of rubbers in a geeks wallet, useless Trojans! Will the media ever accept the fact that the dynasty of old has fallen? Enough of the West coast bias, it is getting pretty transparent at this point guys. Hey Kirk Herbstreit, SUCK IT!

274 - damiensic - I am not going to disrespect Utah but Bama had just lost an opportunity to play for the NC. Utah had everything to gain and Bama had nothing to gain. You never heard a Bama coach or player complain about the lose. They congradulated Utah and got on with life.

To be honest, I am getting fed up with people rehatching that game. It is almost like it was the NC game for Utah. Bama went undefeated in the regular season, lost a close SEC Championship game to Florida and lost to an undefeated Utah team. Utah fans can take pride in the victory but it is time to let it go!

Who is the moron who posted this article, I just can't believe that this guy even mentioned USC. There are 5 teams in the PAC 10 with the same amount or fewer in-conference losses than USC, three of whom are ranked higher, including two who have blown USC out.

Writer: It is pointless to try to keep USC propped up.

Why not mention Stanford, California, or the looser of OSU - Oregon game. C'mon, that USC band wagon is done for the year.

Can someone tell me why Stanford dropped out of the rankings? They whipped two top 11 opponents in back-to-back weeks, then lossed to a now ranked Cal. How are they not ranked, but USC is?

    273. Posted by Brian P - Well, though it would be pretty much a miracle, under certain circumstances - LSU could get in; No more than two teams from any one conference may receive berths in BCS games unless two non-champions from a BCS conference finish as the top two teams in the final BCS standings in which case they will meet in the National Title Game while their conference champion will play in their conference's BCS bowl game. According to this BCS formula - Texas would have to lose to A&M and if Florida and Alabama remained undefeated until their SEC showdown, it would have to be a close game in order to keep them at #1 and #2 to play in the BCS title game. LSU would get the SEC spot in the Sugar Bowl! "If" is a mighty big word and this would be a lot of if'n but it could conceivably happen! USC - I don't know how they would have any chance at all to get a BCS bid?!

This "dawgmeat" was over at the N.D. comment board, telling us how he "hates" Notre Dame...but is full of advise to fire our coach to get better. Figure that out. But even better? He said we should hire Stanford's coach, because "all he does is win, imagine that."

When I pointed out to him Notre Dame is 6-5 and Stanford is only one game better at 7-5, he accused me of "bragging on their 6 wins" , because two of their wins were against "weaklings" like Washington St and Washington.

Well guess what Alpo Breath? TWO of STANFORD'S wins were against Washington St and Washington too.

Idiot. So that guy can't spell: your train of logic has no locomotive or caboose.

USC????? USC???? 47-20 losers to Oregon and 55-21 losers to unranked Stanford, not to mention their first loss 13-16 to a team, Washington, that had gone 1-13 their previous 14 games???

    ARE YOU KIDDING ME??????

Three losses by a total of 64 points? While the Rival's and Yahoo's "experts" are deriding Notre Dame for losing 5 games by 12 points?? Never losing by more than 7??? never giving up more than 38???

USC deserves a bowl game, alright: the Tom Dienhart Shiny Skull Bowl.

    Unflippin'believable.

In case some of you guys forgot, let me refresh your memories on not so long ago events. Last year Alabama spent a good portion of the season as #1. Nobody would argue that alabama was a great team. Went undefeated during the regular season with a SEC schedule. Lost the SEC championship game to Florida. Then pissed and moaned about how they should of been in the title game and that they went undefeated with an SEC schedule. And they weren't incredibly happy with getting stuck with Utah in the "runner-up" bowl.

Utah also went undefeated last year. With close wins over a crappy michigan team, a decent Oregon state, and a last second field goal against TCU. The season was chock full of unimpressive wins over non-bcs teams. Utah got lucky when they got into the sugar bowl. So one team that should of been the national champions against a team that was just lucky to be there. Anyone recall what happened?

Thats right. The tide lost its ass. At no point in that game did they ever have a chance. A MWC team smoked alabama. No OT, no trick plays. The game was over halfway into the first quarter. Utah was too fast and too good. My point being is that nobody saw that coming and everyone was on the bama bandwagon with only theories based on tired old traditions. Teams like Texas,USC,Florida and alabama are good teams. But they aren't that much better (if at all) than teams like Boise, Utah, and TCU.

LSU has no shot at a BCS game. They are only allowed to take 2 teams from the same conference, and Florida and Alabama are locks for the 2 bids.

LSU is 8-3 and hopefully ........9-3 after this weekend but if it is a matter of honor. I would love for them to be in the BS game but my heart say no............but after they got raped by the SEC officiating this year..........does it matter in 2009 when Ala or FL may play for the natl' champ and don't deserve it. Can any one really say without the help of the SEC officials this year that either Ala or FL deserves to be in any hunt for the crown this year. Being the best is saying without a doubt you got there on your own......no questions asked...........The SEC officials @#$%ed that up .............this year.............xoxoxo...............so @#$% the SEC.............

I love my LSU Tigers .............

    Gaeaux Tigers...............@#$% the rest.....

264, They won't take Penn State over Iowa! If they did it would be a sham! Iowa gave them a smack down in there own back yard, so there for Penn State is off to the Capital One Bowl. Iowa will have just as many fans show up as Penn State, so don't worry yourself about that. Go because of Joe, lol. Why, your supposed to feel sorry for him because Iowa and Ohio State gave him a smack down? In his own house no less. Miami? Are you kidding me? No teams with a three lose record deserve a BSC bowl bid, unless everyone else is three losses, which there not! LSU and USC, not a chance, boys, you lost to many games (3) you should have won. USC, nice cheerleaders though! I don't know who wrote this article, but guess they were afraid to attach there name. The AP doesn't know crap about rankings anyway, so they should just go home. At least the BCS got it right and Rivals.com. It should be as follows. Teams with the best record are in! Tie breakers, strength of schedual, plane and simple.

I was thinking it ... just as I was reading (I think it's #253)'s comment: One of the BEST bowl games ... that probably SHOULD take place, but won't is ...Oregon VS Boise rematch! Obviously a) was the PAC 10 as strong as it appeared (some really good teams won and lost ,as PAC 10 teams, once again, totally throttled each other!), b) everyone appears to be questioning that "fluke" win that Boise St. had over the Ducks of Oregon. - Translation: If Boise can do it again (and I seriously doubt it), then some sort of creedence is given to the "not so respected" conferences -- even if Oregon doesn't really "show up" ... but I'm certain that they will (a) because they're Oregon and b) = the "revenge factor"!
The only way this can possibly happen is if Oregon St. beats Oregon ... probably not gonna happen).
    - Lots of questions are solved if "The Rematch" occurs.
ps. I'm a BIG TIME USC fan ... but it's a rebuilding year, so no BCS for us ... unless our defense limits UCLA and Arizona to no more than 10 points each ... and we score - minimum- 30 points per game = not gonna happen! Fight On!! ... but let's be BCS bound in 2011!

Gary b. #262----i know, i know---at first glance, it seems to be a stupid thing to say! but then examine
these two teams more closely, especially the schedules they both play, and you will come to the
realization that what i say has some merit! for example, can boise state play ohio state in columbus and win? usc did! don't worry, my friend, boise state will probably get the berth based on an undefeated record---but my contention is "of course they are undefeated. they have not played anybody woth mentioning! when they beat oregon----well, let's just say boise state could not defeat oregon now!!!"

What idiot wrote this story.... Alabama and Florida will be in the BCS therefore LSU cannot be. No more than two schools from one conference. There is no way the PAC 10 gets two BCS entries this year---USC will not make it back to #14 (must have 9 wins and be ranked 14 or better) and no one will be willing to take Oregon if they lose to Oregon State.
At large contenders not mentioned: Texas a given if they were to get upset by Nebraska, Cincinnati at 11-1 if Pitt were to win the Big East, or an outside chance to a 10-2 Georgia Tech if they lost the ACC championship game. Oklahoma State, Iowa, Virginia Tech and Penn State are qualified under current rules but those rankings all change this weekend. If all the favorites win their conferences---my bet is Penn State---Joe Pa sells tickets.

If there is a single undefeated not in a BCS bowl game, it will show just how terrible the BCS is. Boise State proved that these teams can win against Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl a couple years back. Utah proved it again last season. Of course, Hawaii got killed by Georgia, but West Virginia killed Oklahoma too. There are some blowouts, even big-name teams like Oklahoma get dominated sometimes in BCS bowls. TCU, Boise State, and Cincinatti need their chances to shine.

    Here are the facts:

Boise State, TCU, Cincinatti, Florida/Alabama (one will have to lose), and Texas may finish undefeated. Miami, USC, and LSU may not even finish with 2 losses each.

richard s. Are you just totally ignorant! I'm assuming you must be to even suggest an over-rated USC team should get into a BCS Bowl ahead of an undefeated Boise State. Suggest you review the season, i.e. Boise State humbles Oregon and Oregon demolishes USC followed by Stanford doing the same. Oh, also the mighty Washington Huskies dropped the Trojans. Boy, isn't that a sign of a deserving BCS team. I just can't believe how people like you who are so far separated from the facts even post on these sites. Oh, that's right, it's a free country.

I'm a big LSU/SEC fan..but LSU isnt bowl material plain and simple. USC...no real offense and their defense is spotty at best. So no BCS bowl for them. Right now the Pac 10 has more stronger teams than the SEC , but realistically LSU, USC, Tennessee, Oregon State, Miss State could do very well in the minor bowls and should take them. Right now the top teams in no particular order are Texas, Alabama, Florida, Oregon, Cal, Stanford, TCU and Boise State.
