BCS hires Fleischer’s public relations firm

  • Print

Ari Fleischer Communications, a sports public relations firm headed by the former press secretary for President George W. Bush, has been hired by BCS officials to help remodel the tattered image of college football’s postseason system.

BCS executive director Bill Hancock, promoted to the newly recreated position early this week, announced the hiring of Fleischer’s company Saturday.

Hancock said in a statement the goal of the hiring was to help highlight the positive aspects of the BCS, which he called the best way to match college football’s top two teams, while preserving the bowl system.

Fleischer, whose company also works with NFL teams, Major League Baseball and the USOC, says he is honored to be able to help the BCS.

The BCS does have flaws because of the tens of millions of dollars that sponsors put up. Look at it from their point of view. Would you put up that kind of money to watch a Boise St game. Bankruptcy, for sure. No one wants to watch that . The public wants a Big 12, SEC, or Pac 10. The truth hurts. A 16 team playoff is a joke. If you are not in the top 5, what makes you think you have the right to play in the NC. I know, you want the money from the playoff games. And there ius always a small chance you might win. Not be better, just win on that day. You have everything to win and nothing to lose. Last year the NC champs lost one game, should that team deserve to play for the NC. UTEP beat #15 Houston, are they a top 10 team? Appalachian St. beat Michigan. Get my point? The big powerful schools have everything to lose, the smaller weaker schools have nothing to lose. In my opinion, if we ever have a playoff, they will add one more bowl . Use the BCS rankings and pit #1 against #4 and #2 against #4. There will never be a month of playoffs in December. December is finals month. College is about education, not just sports. I do not like the current BCS. It does need tweeked a little, but not to the point you have weak undefeated teams or a #16 ranked team in a NC conversation

So this is how they're fixing the problem? It's like dressing a pig in a negligee and calling it Heidi Klum.

The Bull Crap System is exactly that! How you can pay seemingly competent individuals to develop and maintain a rediculous system is beyond me. Everybody knows its about $$$ and self-preservation, yet nobody in the BCS system will say it. The fact is, more teams have felt screwed since the BCS has begun since the previous polling system was in place. Every year I hope and pray for controversy in the BCS system and every year I get it. This year will be sweetest yet.

Here is 1 solution to the whole mess you divide the country into 4 sections down the middle and across the middle evenly keep the conferences play 1 warm up {patsy game and only 1} play 3 games out of conference and in 1of each of the other sections{ ie Florida@ say Ohio State, Oregon,Texas} then 5 conference games rotating teams every year. Then rank each section by wins and strength of schedule pick the top 4 from each section coming up with 16, shuffle the sections {ie Northeast and southwest or southeast or northwest} seed them and have a playoff to come up with final 2 .1 east 1 west for the National Champion. Non playoff teams will fill the bowls and everyone will play from 10 to 14 games

This is not going to do any good for College football, this is going to only help the bowl sponsors. You do not have to hire someone to fix the BCS, it is unfixable, it is BS that should have been flushed down the john along time ago. How stupid of the new BCS director to go and hire somebody (a firm) to do his job, why not just cut the new director lose and just pay one or the other. This just shows how wrong the BCS is when you have to hire a person and a firm to try to sell this BS. You are ruining college football for the sake of the bowls. You can have a playoff ststem so easy, and still have the bowl system in place, and the bowl sponsors would make more money from their bowls than they do now. Come on Wake up NEW DIRECTOR, do not hire a firm to do your job, unless this firm, is willing to do away with the BCS, then you have done your job.

It's time to scrap the BCS and this only proves it adding anything thats has any ties past or present to George Bush really makes me think it will be on the up and up but then again maybe this will help them see how flawed the system is even being connected with the name of Bush should make everyone realize how stupid the BCS is and that it is doomed to fail.Wonder how long it will be before they try to scare people into praising the BCS.

There is so much tradition with the big bowls getting to pick the winner of the big ten, or the Pac Ten etc.. Its going to be very tough to breakdown these institutions. One way to change it is to boycott and protest all the big bowl games don't watch them if TV ratings drop because people don't care because the best true match-ups are not in the big games then they will have to change. I also think with the narrowing of ratings expectations due to people having so many more channels to watch it will be hard to get this message across. I wish Obama had made this issue first over health care that would have sent his rating through the roof. I like Ari Fleischer and I am sure his firm can use the work this will provide but this system is so broken and wrong I don't see what argument they can make in favor of the BCS. Why not make up extra games after its all over offer the schools more money if they will play TCU or Bosie in a post bowl game. That would draw huge ratings.

F the B*S! Check out collegefootballplayoff.org -- a social network designed to bring down the BCS. They've got foam middle fingers emblazoned with "F the B*S" and hilarious ads starring Ron Jeremy (yes, THE Ron Jeremy).

Wow, brilliant hire! Just look what Ari did for Dubya's public image.
For the love of all that is holy, please tear down this absurd and archaic system. Don't give me the "student athlete" or the regular season "is the playoffs" argument. The system excludes potentially deserving institutions and is at its core, unfair. There has to be a better way!
