Tebow, McCoy finalists for Maxwell, O’Brien honors

  • Print

DALLAS (AP)—Tim Tebow and Colt McCoy are set for at least one showdown off the field.

The quarterbacks for No. 1 Florida and third-ranked Texas were chosen finalists Monday for two of the biggest postseason awards outside the Heisman Trophy.

Tebow, McCoy and Alabama running back Mark Ingram are the finalists for the Maxwell Award that goes to the best all-around player in college football. Tebow won the past two Maxwells.

Houston’s Case Keenum joins Tebow and McCoy as finalists for the Davey O’Brien Award given to the best quarterback.

The winners of the Maxwell, O’Brien and seven other awards will be announced at Walt Disney World in Florida on Dec. 10, two days before Tebow and McCoy figure to be in New York as Heisman finalists for the second year in a row.

Tebow won the Heisman in 2007 and finished third behind winner Sam Bradford and McCoy, the runner-up, last year.

If the Gators and Longhorns win twice more each to get to 13-0, Tebow and McCoy will probably face off on the field in the BCS championship game at the Rose Bowl.

One of Florida’s victories, though, will have to come against No. 2 Alabama in the Southeastern Conference championship. And Ingram figures to be a worthy opponent in Heisman balloting as well. The sophomore is fifth nationally in rushing at 127 yards per game with 12 touchdowns.

Tebow doesn’t measure up statistically among quarterbacks, but has led the Gators to BCS titles two of the past three years. McCoy set an NCAA record with his 43rd victory Saturday against Kansas.

Keenum is the statistical darling of the bunch. He leads the nation in passing by more than 1,000 yards and is the leader in total offense and completions as well.

Ingram is also a finalist for the Doak Walker Award. The others are Toby Gerhart of Stanford, the national leader with 23 touchdowns, and Clemson’s C.J. Spiller.

McCoy’s favorite target, receiver Jordan Shipley, is a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award. He is joined by Freddie Barnes of Bowling Green and Golden Tate of Notre Dame.

Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh is a finalist for the Outland Trophy (best interior lineman) and the Chuck Bednarik Award (best defensive player).

The other Outland finalists are Mike Iupati of Idaho and Russell Okung of Oklahoma State. The other Bednarik contenders are Alabama nose guard Terrence Cody and Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes.

The winner of the Jim Thorpe Award for best defensive back will come from the trio of Tennessee’s Eric Berry, Florida’s Joe Haden and Earl Thomas of Texas.

The Lou Groza finalists for best kicker are Kai Forbath of UCLA, Leigh Tiffin of Alabama and Blair Walsh of Georgia. The finalists for the Ray Guy Award (best punter) are Georgia’s Drew Butler, Michigan’s Zoltan Mesko and Florida’s Chas Henry.

Tidemachine.... sorry dude, but not even close! The Marque matchup of Tebow and the Gators versus McCoy ond the Longhorns would be a far better draw from any perspective.... except for ONLY that of a Bammy fan.

Florida v Bama will be a great game too, but Bama's year is not yet here... Both defenses are stout, but Bama won't be able to hang in the end. In close game, Gators by 7... (17-10) or (24-17)

I dont think you really beleve that. You are no better at QB than last year. JJ has looked so confused all year long. I think you should be worred about your game this week. Iron Bowl is a tuff game.
You just better hope that they are in better condition this year and dont run out of gas like last year.

RickZ - the internet's most well known immature, uneducated, ill informed child speaks yet again. Please leave your phone number so we can call Mommy & Daddy to restrict your internet access and to send you to bed without any ice cream. Maybe a good night's sleep will afford you the opportunity of actually making some sense.... Probably not - A child is child after all... and in your case, not a very bright one at that!

LEt's hope that Tebow & McCoy can square off in the BCS Championship game this year. I for one would love to see these two great QBs, outstanding programs, and raucous fan bases meet up in a title game. THAT WOULD BE A REALLY GOOD GAME TO WATCH!

    #61,

If you think you can predict what Bama will do in the SECCG you are sadly mistaken.
Your Gators are far more concerned with Bama than FSU. Trust me.
It will be a better game this time around, at least for the Tide.

    Bring on the next contestant!!!

    Roll Tide!!!

I think Tebow is going to have a bit of a struggle finding his identity in the NFL a la Vince Young...Like Young, he's a good college passer and runner but not exceptional enough at either one by NFL standards...What might put him over the hump is leadership...but again, he might actually be better suited as a tight end or even reciever a la Matt Jones a few years ago (albeit pre drug habit)....

Believe me guys...if I thought the media were reading these I would definitely be bashing them...I did not want to leave the impression that Tebow deserved to be bashed because of the constant media coverage of his every waking moment...He hasn't done anything wrong...It was merely to suggest that many bash him out of pure fatige of the coverage....again...not fair...it just is what it is...Secondly, he's a really good player on a really good team...but again, I think in many of these games he shouldn't have had to "will" his team to victory over a few unranked teams...However, I do understand and respect that when you're on top everyone, and I mean everyone gives you their best game...

McCoy will receive the O'Brien & Ingram will get the Maxwell (& the Heisman).
Tebow has won enough of these awards in the past.

The Gators didn't keep winning when they played Michigan in the Citrus Bowl. They got stomped. Tebow got exposed in that game, and good pro scouts will remember it.

just hand it to tebow, just because he's the fourth rated qb, and undeserving didn't stop the gifts in the past that he's been handed...let the coddling continue...what a queer bunch of writers here

kendallfiscus - Loved your statement about the character of Tebow and the fact that we as gator fans overall do not spend a lot of time bashing other players. Why Bash Tebow because he is mentioned so much in the media? Thats crazy. It isnt like HE is sending out press releases. Thats what I like about College football. Most of these kids play for love of the game. Why hate them

John B. Your right. tebow has not been setting the world on fire like in the past but I have a feeling that if almost any other quaterback had done what he has, they would definetly be getting some press. Has he made mistakes? Of course. Has he always found a way to win AND be intstrumental? Of course.

Will be be a great NFL QB? Time will tell, I can tell you one thing for certain. If he doesnt, his life and ours will go on and he will be successful in Life and thats what really matters.

Johh B - that's a good post and a lucid perspective. One that can be understood. With that said, then the aggravation should be directed towards the Media and certainly not Tebow! If there is any player out there that is selfless and humble - it's Tebow!

You should factor in one thing in your assessment though, even though Tebow is not having a year that is simialr in productive numbers as in his past, you can certainly still credit Tebow for a number of our victories that he managed to will our way... Yeah, having a pick returned from the end zone for a TD and couple other bad passes surely get press, but the press or negative perspectives don't translate the number of perfectly thrown TD passes that were droped by Cooper and Thompson this year either. Florida's offensive struggles are not solely based on Tebow's play by any means. One can also say that the play of the SEC's opposition has stepped up to compete with the No. 1 team in the country as well! So long as you end the day with the "W," the rest is noise after all... You can't argue the fact that in his Senior year thus far, Tim Tebow is at the helm of an undefeated team regardless of the press or commentary on his play...

    Go Gators

60 - While Mallett is probably the best specimen in college football as a Prototypical QB, he hasn't been able to beat anyone of substance, atleast not that I can think of. It might be unfair, but thats the way it goes. Also, alot of QB's have had numbers such as his at this early in their career. Im sure he'll be up for many awards over the next few seasons, dude has a mean canon.

ok i have nothing to say about texas or any team in college football besides the gators, because we are all fans and are going to root for our home team. im gonna sit back watch each one of these teams next 2 games and let the winners win, but here is my pic for the national title game and i know its gonna piss alot of u off lol oh well (FLORIDA VS TCU) watch what im telling you im good at these predictions.

predicitons for SEC & BIG12 champioship

    SEC
FLA VS BAMA ---- FLA 34 BAMA 14

    BIG 12
TEX VS NEB------- TEX 20 NEB 31

    NC
FLA VS TCU------- FLA 42 TCU 21

    GOOOOOOOOOOO GATORS!!!!

OH YEAH I AM MORE CONCERNED WITH THE NOLES THAN BAMA, THIS IS STILL A RIVALRY GAME SO ITS HARD TO PREDICT WHAT HAPPENS WITH THOSE.

Post 58....As a Texas fan I certainly do not hate Tebow (or any college player for the most part (although Spikes and Blount get a raised eyebrow)...Tebow is a fine player and from what I can tell, young man. I think what wears most of us (non-gators) out is that the media seems to use him over and over again with their praise to promote their own self interest with covering SEC games. Tebow while an excellent player has not be outstanding this year. He doesn't pass extremely well and as a runner he's not exactly setting the world on fire. I think if you had another QB on the same team you would still be beating the teams you've beaten. But to constantly hear over and over what a "God" Tebow is just doesn't match up with his actual performances...There's been several games this year that Florida (and Tebow) should be blowing out and end up barely winning....Call it Tebow fatige...people (outside of Gator land) have just sort of had enough....

herbert e, would you please stop and think before you run your mouth. As I recall, your Texas team lost to Texas Tech, who then lost to that same unranked team (Ole Miss) in the Cotton Bowl. If our lone loss came to the winner of the Cotton Bowl, I wouldn't say that the press put us in the National Championship game.
Now I am not going to be ignorant like you, and bash a good team that I know nothing about. Yes, Texas has a good team. Correction, a very good team. I hope that Florida plays them in the Rose Bowl for the title, just think what kind of match-up that would be! But to say their second team would beat TCU is ignorant and stupid.

Also, why would everyone of you non-Gator fans hate Tebow? Honestly, he is not a thug like some (Brandon Spikes has still disappointed me with that display against Georgia) and he has never done anything to create all this hate except win. His character alone on and off the field should earn the respect of all fans, if you like him or not. Have you ever heard a UF person go off on McCoy or Bradford? No, we respect them because we all respect the game and the players that partake in it. On the off chance that a UF fan does bash a great player, then they are just as ignorant as the others that bash Tebow.

If Tebow never plays a down of pro ball he still better than 99% of your Q.B.s. that has played college ball. Most of the jealous morons on this thread knows that Fla. would beat their team .That what makes this nonsence they post so stupid.I know when the team I support is not very good and I accept that. Why can't these morons do the same?McCoy is a very good QB but theres a change he might suck as a pro.It happens to many good College QBs.IMO Mallett has the best pro looking game.B.T.W. Rick Z is a Bitter loser.

BGator, from a Texas fan, I feel the same way about Tebow. He'll be a success in the pros, I just don't know at what position. Hopefully he can disprove everyone and succeed at QB. And I would love to play UF as well, USC in 05 and UF this year would be a wonderful 2nd half of this decade for us Longhorn's. Good luck against FSU.
