Cal’s Best hopes to return to field this season

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP)—Star tailback Jahvid Best is eager to return to the football field after being sidelined by a frightening fall and concussion and has targeted California’s season finale as a possible return date.

Best gave his first extensive comments Wednesday following the injury that knocked him out and put a scare into his Golden Bears teammates. He said that the symptoms from the concussion have cleared but he still has a sore back.

“I’m just trying to take it day by day and hoping for the best,” he said. “Every day I’m feeling a little better. I’m hoping it keeps progressing that way and hopefully I’ll be out here pretty soon.”

Best missed last week’s game against Arizona and has been ruled out of the Big Game on Saturday against No. 14 Stanford. Best hopes to be able to return to the field Dec. 5 against Washington.

Best was injured Nov. 7 when he hurdled an Oregon State defender at the end of a 7-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Best vaulted into the air over safety Cameron Collins and then was bumped even higher by another defender before falling on his back and head from about 8 feet in the air.

Best’s helmet came off on impact and he briefly lost consciousness. He spent one night in the hospital with the concussion and sore back.

“Any time somebody is taken off the field on a stretcher, it always gets taken pretty seriously,” Best said. “But I’m a blessed person. Thank god it wasn’t as bad as it could have been.”

The last memory Best has of the play was jumping in the air. The next thing he remembered was waking up in the hospital. His mother filled him in on the details of what happened. Best has seen the play twice since then and said “it still doesn’t look that bad to me.”

Best said if the chance came up again he would still choose to try to jump over the defender—a move that used to be illegal in college football.

“From my vantage point, there was a guy coming to tackle me low,” he said. “I didn’t see the other guy who actually hit me and pushed me and knocked me off-balance. I didn’t see him. So if it ever happened again, I would jump over the corner.”

This was the second concussion Best sustained in an eight-day period. He was diagnosed with a minor concussion after the game the previous week against Arizona State.

Cal players all get baseline testing before the season that measure balance, memory, reaction and recognition. Players are tested again after a concussion to compare the post-concussion results to the healthy ones. Best said his tests returned to normal in the past couple of days.

“It doesn’t make me rethink football at all,” he said. “Football is a violent game and stuff like this happens all the time.”

Cal fullback Brian Holley is writing a senior thesis on concussions and has talked to Best about the dangers. The main message Holley gave his teammate was to be smart and that “you can’t play with your brain,” Best said.

Best returned to the team last Saturday as an honorary captain for the game against Arizona. He has been at practice the past two days, supporting his teammates as they get ready for the game against the Cardinal.

He said it will be difficult to watch Saturday’s game, but his presence is serving as an inspiration to the rest of the team.

“He’s a part of this team,” coach Jeff Tedford said. “Everybody loves Jahvid and Jahvid loves the team. That’s why he’s so well respected. He is a team guy. Even though we know he’s not going to play this week, he’s here to support his teammates. That’s Jahvid all the way. He’s a first-class guy.”

Best, one of the most dynamic running backs in the country and a preseason Heisman Trophy contender, has 16 touchdowns and 867 yards rushing this season. He also has 22 catches for 213 yards.

John M - totally agree with you that the jump was unnecessary. I was a couple rows up in that corner of the stadium and wondered at the time why he disregarded advice they give you in Pop Warner when he had enough momentum for a TD. As far as playing him, that was his SECOND concussion in two weeks. He probably shouldn't have been playing in the first place. He was out, and I mean not even twitching, for a VERY long time. Absolutely should be done for the season.

They have certain tests give for concussions and if you don't pass them all, medicla willnot release yu. Its best for player and good reuirement. On matter of illegal hit, hell,he /best/ is the one that jump, left his feet off ground, puting him self at mercy of defense who were coming fast and hard. They just kept coming when HE presented a jumping, floating target to hit, good clean hits, chance kyou take when jumping...... plus what I hate, is football fields played on cement with liner and green rug........fields look pretty for color tv, but extremely dangerous for players........

How does "dirty" come into play on this?!? If you watched the game, the play, the endless replays of it, it's clear the OSU defenders were both heading for a shoulder-level hit until Best did something unexpected and jumped -- way up. The defenders continued their motion to hit the player -- airborne or not. That's not dirty play. You want everyone to suddenly pull up whenever a player decides to go airborne? Let's see how many torn ACLs come out of that. Are they supposed to instantly calculate the required inertia in order to generate the proper spin rate to cause the player to land on his feet? People hit airborne players all the time, especially in college FB where sideline catches aren't catches if the player is pushed out before he lands. No one calls that "dirty." Get your knowledge right, and quit cheap-shotting players who made an honest, clean play on a defender, that just ended up very scary. I admire Jahvid Best; I hope to watch him play a lot of NFL football. The fact is, he made a questionable (looking at the play, it was really unnecessary -- he would almost certainly have scored staying on his feet) decision to jump. He will probably scale that back now, to his future benefit.

Jahvid is a real credit to the sport and i hope he gets well soon. I think if he returns next year he should be moved to slot where he will not take such a beating. Also Cal does not have very good wide outs.
Cal's offensive line has gone way down hill since Big Jim left for UDUB. Too many Coaching changes. They miss Delgado's recruiting as well he did very well at LB Poly and Crenshaw and in the islands
No more Cameron Jordan's or Tyson Alualu's in the pipeline.

In the 33 years I've attended CAL football, I've never seen the home sideline move over to be near their team injured mate, literally, clearing out the area to be near him, but not get in the way of the paramedics and support staff. Javid, we will miss you on the field this Saturday, but we know you'll be there supporting the team and giving them all of your love. Take good care of yourself.

    GO!! BEARS!!!

My best wishes to Jahvid Best. I hate to see an awesome back like that get hurt especially the way he did (textbook definition of Selfless Service). Stay strong, Jahvid. Some of us In USC land love ya!

One piece of advice though. Next time, don't risk your own personal safety to get your team the win. Take a lesson from Florida and Bama and let the referees get you the win! :-)

Beautiful comments as always from Shane Vereen tonight: "I hold Jahvid in my heart."

People love Jahvid Best because of his selflessness and modesty. We all hope he will return to the field as soon as it is safe, because he is amazing to watch. Good luck Jahvid!

Football is a contact sport and people love awesome type hits. It is unfortunate that people get hurt but does anyone want to change the game or rules? I doubt it or they will go watch something else like the pros only where it comes down to performance and money.

Get well Jahvid, you hopefully know what is best for you.

Comment #1, by John S., actually shows us very appropriately how boxing and what happened to Jahvid Best are similar: brain damage. It is very safe for John S. to continue posting here, as long as he's not driving while posting LOL. However, I must ask you, John, to discontinue any hopes you have in the ring. You've had your bell rung too many times already!

All sports are dirty in some way, shape or form. When money is involved, so is dirt, greed and corruption. If you don;t know that then perhaps you should spend less time watching sports and more time reading books.

So do yourself a favour and stop watching, and do us all a favour and stop whining.
